1. Simple and Efficient LoRa Receiver Scheme for Multi-Path Channel

Abstract

This paper presents a novel LoRa (Long Range) receiver operating in frequency selective Multi-Path Channel (MPC). The dechirped received LoRa wave-forms under MPC allows us to derive a simple and efficient LoRa receiver scheme by using a MF (Matched Filter) approach that aims to maximize the SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) at the symbol index frequency of the DFT output. We show that the MF receiver can be seen as RAKE structure where interference peaks related to multipath, exhibited at DFT output, are recombined in a constructive way. Detection performance is driven by channel energy and the benefit of this novel MF/RAKE receiver over original coherent and non-coherent receiver appears only for MPC that exhibits significant paths energy. These two MF and RAKE receivers have however different implementation complexities that are studied in details. We provide in that sense recommendations on which receiver variant to use for real operations, depending on complexity constraints. Finally, the proposed MF/RAKE receiver outperforms previous results on TDEL (Time Delay Estimation LoRa) receiver over MPC, especially at low SNR and higher LoRa Spreading Factor (SF) parameter, at the cost of higher but reasonable complexity.

Abstract

This paper presents a semi-analytical approximation of Symbol Error Rate (SER) for the well known LoRa Internet of Things (IoT) modulation scheme in the following two scenarios: 1) in multi-path frequency selective fading channel with Additive White Gaussian Noise (AW GN) and 2) in the presence of a second interfering LoRa user in flat-fading AW GN channel. Performances for both coherent and non-coherent cases are derived by considering the common Discrete Fourier transform (DF T) based detector on the received LoRa waveform. By considering these two scenarios, the detector exhibits parasitic peaks that severely degrade the performance of the LoRa receiver. We propose in that sense a theoretical expression for this result, from which a unified framework based on peak detection probabilities allows us to derive SER, which is validated by Monte Carlo simulations. Fast computation of the derived closedform SER allows to carry out deep performance analysis for these two scenarios.

Abstract

A LoRa self‐jamming scheme that enables secure and covert communications by adding jamming symbols when transmitting is proposed. The scheme has been validated in simulations. The work is continued by evaluating the scheme on real‐world software defined radio (SDR) equipment. Experiments immediately showed that a demodulation is impossible as the received signal is highly distorted. This comes from the fact that adding symbols at transmission actually generates high peak‐to‐average power ratio (PAPR) preventing proper waveform generation by the equipment's hardware. This paper presents a PAPR correction scheme that modifies the waveform. The properties of this modified waveform are analysed and the performances are assessed in simulations with realistic time and frequency synchronization assumption. For the ideal 0 dB PAPR corrected output, the SER performances are close to that of a legacy LoRa communication, while preserving the physical layer security capabilities of the self‐jamming scheme. It is finally shown that our PAPR correction scheme effectively recovers the self‐jamming properties on SDR devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Otoferlin, a predicted C2-domain transmembrane protein, which is defective in a recessive form of human deafness, is studied. It shows that otoferlin expression in the hair cells correlates with afferent synaptogenesis and otoferlin localizes to ribbon-associated synaptic vesicles.

Abstract

A new precoder based on optimization of the minimum Euclidean distance d(sub min) between signal points at the receiver side and for use in multiple-input multiple-output spatial multiplexing systems, is described. Comparisons with maximum signal-to-noise ratio strategy and other criteria-based precoders, such as water-filling, minimum mean square error, and maximization of the minimum singular value of the global channel, are performed to illustrate the significant bit-error-rate improvement of the proposed precoder.

Abstract

The paper deals with the analytical evaluation of the asymptotic detection and false-alarm probabilities of multicycle and single-cycle detectors operating in additive white Gaussian noise with unknown and nonrandom spectral level, which are based on the cyclostationarity properties of the signal to be intercepted. The receiver operating characteristics are derived by using the asymptotic complex normality and the covariance expression of the sample average estimator of the cyclic covariance in an observed discrete-time series. A numerical example for interception of a binary phase-shift keying signal is considered.

Abstract

Precise quantitative information about the molecular architecture of synapses is essential to understanding the functional specificity and downstream signaling processes at specific populations of synapses. Glycine receptors (GlyRs) are the primary fast inhibitory neurotransmitter receptors in the spinal cord and brainstem. These inhibitory glycinergic networks crucially regulate motor and sensory processes. Thus far, the nanoscale organization of GlyRs underlying the different network specificities has not been defined. Here, we have quantitatively characterized the molecular arrangement and ultra-structure of glycinergic synapses in spinal cord tissue using quantitative super-resolution correlative light and electron microscopy. We show that endogenous GlyRs exhibit equal receptor-scaffold occupancy and constant packing densities of about 2000 GlyRs µm-2 at synapses across the spinal cord and throughout adulthood, even though ventral horn synapses have twice the total copy numbers, larger postsynaptic domains, and more convoluted morphologies than dorsal horn synapses. We demonstrate that this stereotypic molecular arrangement is maintained at glycinergic synapses in the oscillator mouse model of the neuromotor disease hyperekplexia despite a decrease in synapse size, indicating that the molecular organization of GlyRs is preserved in this hypomorph. We thus conclude that the morphology and size of inhibitory postsynaptic specializations rather than differences in GlyR packing determine the postsynaptic strength of glycinergic neurotransmission in motor and sensory spinal cord networks. Abstract

International audience; The concatenation of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) linear precoder with an outer forward error correction (FEC) encoder is investigated at the transmitter. Turbo detection is applied at the receiver for the decoding. The bit-interleaved codeword is considered to be grouped and mapped directly onto the received constellation thanks to a MIMO symbol mapper. We exploit the optimal maximum squared Euclidean weight (MSEW) mappings for two forms of max-dmin precoder to propose a novel precoder referred to as max-lmin. The switching threshold between both forms is optimized by considering all received sequences whose binary mappings differ by exactly one bit and by first maximizing the minimum Euclidean distance within this set and then minimizing the number of pairs achieving it. Extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart is also used to validate the analysis. Simulation results show significant improvement, in terms of system error-rate performance, of the max-lmin compared to the conventional max-dmin.

Abstract

International audience; A novel decoding algorith for non-binary low density parity check (NB-LDPC) codes is proposed. The algorithm builds on the recently designed parallel symbol-flipping decoding (PSFD) algorithm and combines a technique of error estimation and a method of multiple voting levels from each unsatisfied check-sum to the corresponding variable nodes. Simulations results, performed on a number of NB-LDPC codes of various lengths and column weights constructed using several methods, show that the new algorithm not only avoids using code-dependent voting threshold but also improves the error rate performance of the PSFD algorithm, particularly for low column weight parity-check matrices.

Abstract

International audience; We study inter-channel interferences in VHF transmissions for the maritime automatic identification system and propose solutions to avoid them. The inter-channel interference is caused by the brevity of SOTDMA frames used by ships to transmit their position.In order to avoid the spreading of the spectrum, two solutions are considered. A Tukey window is first used to avoid a too hard transition between consecutive temporal slots. The second solution consists in using a Chebyshev lowpass filter. We compare these two solutions in term of interference and show that their association can be envisaged with reasonable complexity.

International audience; Cet article présente les performances,en terme de probabilité d'erreur symbole (PES) dans un canal de Rayleigh, des systèmes multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) à 2 dimensions (2D) utilisant un précodage. On s'intéresse aux précodeurs et décodeurs basés sur les critères de l'erreur quadratique moyenne minimum, la qualité de service et l'erreur égale. Ces solutions ont pour propriété intéressante de transformer le système MIMO en un ensemble de sous-canaux parallèles SISO, indépendants où l'allocation de puissance se répartit suivant les sous-canaux correspondant aux modes propres de la matrice du canal. L'exploitation de cette représentation équivalente ainsi que la connaissance de la loi conjointe des valeurs singulières de la matrice du canal permet de déterminer facilement dans le cas 2D les PES de ces systèmes par intégration numérique dans un canal de Rayleigh. Les comparaisons en terme de PES sont ensuite présentées illustrant l'intérêt pratique de cette étude.

Abstract

We propose a new precoder based on optimization of the minimum euclidean distance dmin between signal points at the receiver side and for use in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) spatial multiplexing systems. Assuming that channel state information (CSI) can be made available at the transmitter, an optimal dmin precoder (max_dmin) is derived in the case of two different transmitted data streams. For QPSK modulation, a numerical approach shows that the precoder design depends on the channel characteristics. Comparisons to other precoders are performed to illustrate the significant bit-error-rate improvement of the proposed precoder., Nous proposons un nouveau précodeur pour les systèmes multi-antennes basé sur l’optimisation au récepteur de la distance euclidienne minimale (max_dmin). En faisant l’hypothèse que l’information sur l’état du canal (CSI) est disponible à l’émetteur, la structure du précodeur max_dmin est obtenue pour des systèmes émettant sur deux voies de données. Pour la modulation QPSK, une recherche numérique montre que le précodeur peut prendre deux formes, en fonction des caractéristiques du canal. Des comparaisons avec des précodeurs de la littérature illustrent le gain en taux d’erreur binaire (TEB) apporté par le précodeur max_dmin.

International audience; We derive a fast maximum likelihood based (MLB) decoder for a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) Rician fading channel with additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). The basic idea is to take profit of the Rician channel structure to significantly reduce the search of the optimum vector of symbols by the ML criterion. When channel diversity is low, we obtain bit error rates (BER) which are very close to the BER of the maximum likelihood (ML) optimum decoder. Comparisons in terms of BER for Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) are performed for the MLB, ML and OSIC (Ordered Successive Interference Cancellation) decoders via simulations. Finally, the ratio of computational complexities (depending of the number of transmitters and on the constellation), between the ML and the MLB is presented to show the interest of the proposed approach.
