Abstract

Partitioning soil organic carbon (SOC) in fractions with different biogeochemical stability is useful to better understand and predict SOC dynamics, and provide information related to soil health. Multiple SOC partition schemes exist but few of them can be implemented on large sample sets and therefore be considered as relevant options for soil monitoring. The well-established particulate- (POC) vs. mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) physical fractionation scheme is one of them. Introduced more recently, Rock-Eval® thermal analysis coupled with the PARTYSOC machine-learning model can also fractionate SOC into active (Ca) and stable SOC (Cs). A debate is emerging as to which of these methods should be recommended for soil monitoring. To investigate the complementarity or redundancy of these two fractionation schemes, we compared the quantity and environmental drivers of SOC fractions obtained on an unprecedented dataset from mainland France. About 2,000 topsoil samples were recovered all over the country, presenting contrasting land covers and pedoclimatic characteristics, and analysed. We found that the environmental drivers of the fractions were clearly different, the more stable MAOC and Cs fractions being mainly driven by soil characteristics, whereas land cover and climate had a greater influence on more labile POC and Ca fractions. The stable and labile SOC fractions provided by the two methods strongly differed in quantity (MAOC/Cs = 1.88 ± 0.46 and POC/Ca = 0.36 ± 0.17; n = 843) and drivers, suggesting that they correspond to fractions with different biogeochemical stability. We argue that, at this stage, both methods can be seen as complementary and potentially relevant for soil monitoring. As future developments, we recommend comparing how they relate to indicators of soil health such as nutrient availability or soil structural stability, and how their measurements can improve the accuracy of SOC dynamics models. Abstract

Digital maps of soil properties are now widely available. End-users now can access several digital soil mapping (DSM) products of soil properties, produced using different models, calibration/training data, and covariates at various spatial scales from global to local. Therefore, there is an urgent need to provide easy-to-understand tools to communicate map uncertainty and help end-users assess the reliability of DSM products for use at local scales. In this study, we used a large amount of hand-feel soil texture (HFST) data to assess the performance of various published DSM products on the prediction of soil particle size distribution in Central France. We tested four DSM products for soil texture prediction developed at various scales (global, continental, national, and regional) by comparing their predictions with approximately 3 200 HFST observations realized on a 1:50 000 soil survey conducted after release of these DSM products. We used both visual comparisons and quantitative indicators to match the DSM predictions and HFST observations. The comparison between the low-cost HFST observations and DSM predictions clearly showed the applicability of various DSM products, with the prediction accuracy increasing from global to regional predictions. This simple evaluation can determine which products can be used at the local scale and if more accurate DSM products are required.

Abstract

Nutrient loss in surface runoff from hill country catchments is typically generated from small areas and over short time periods. This study compared nutrient and sediment losses in surface runoff when cattle were fed winter hay supplement on two hill country sub-catchments (∼0.3 ha) with contrasting soil types (imperfectly-drained and well-drained soils). Runoff samples were collected during seven events (June-August). During this period, two herds of 16 pregnant, mixed aged Angus cows were supplemented with 2 kg DM. cow day−1 of hay in a defined feeding area within each sub-catchment. The imperfectly-drained soil measured 4.8 times the volume of surface runoff compared to the well-drained soil. As a result, the imperfectly-drained soil lost 2.5 times the amount of sediment, 6.3 and 5.1 times the amount of total phosphorus (TP) and dissolved reactive phosphorus respectively and 4.5 times the amount of total nitrogen (TN). Surface runoff losses of nitrate-N from the well-drained soil were undetectable over the study period. Whilst overall nutrient losses were low over the short study period (0.22 kg TP ha−1 and 0.68 kg TN ha−1), the results highlight the potential benefit of strategically placing cattle feed supplements on soils less prone to surface runoff to improve freshwater outcomes. This isespecially true for soil organic carbon (SOC) in the framework of food security and climate change. TheGlobalSoilMap consortium was established in response to such a soaring demand for up-to-date andrelevant soil information. The majority of the data needed to produce GlobalSoilMap soil property mapswill, at least for the first generation, come mainly from archived soil legacy data, which could includepolygon soil maps and point pedon data, and from available co-variates such as climatic data, remotesensing information, geological data, and other forms of environmental information.Several countries have already released products according to the GlobalSoilMap specifications and theproject is rejuvenating soil survey and mapping in many parts of the world. Functional soil property mapshave been produced using digital soil mapping techniques and existing legacy information and madeavailable to the user community for application. In addition, uncertainty has been provided as a 90%prediction interval based on estimated upper and lower class limits. We believe that GlobalSoilMapconstitutes the best available framework and methodology to address global issues about SOC mapping.Main scientific challenges include time related and uncertainties issues.

National audience; GlobalSoilMap was established in 2010 in response to the increasing demand for soil information (GlobalSoilMap Science Committee, 2014) with the aim of tackling a very ambitious challenge: producing a consistent soil property information system at 100 m resolution for the whole world (Sanchez et al., 2009; Arrouays et al., 2014a&b). Great progress has been made since the establishment of the GlobalSoilMap: a major achievement for the consortium is the development of the GlobalSoilMap Technical Specifications. These specifications are unique in the sense that they provide guidance for the production of a global soil information system. Additionally, these specifications have been developed by multiple parties, in a collaborative and inclusive fashion. In order to populate its soil information grid, GlobalSoilMap relies on Digital Soil Mapping, and uses state-of-the-art and emerging technologies such as proximal and remote sensing, data mining, and spatial databases. Additionally, all the attribute layers produced within GlobalSoilMap have an estimate of uncertainty. Following these specifications, several countries have actually started producing and delivering the first generation of their GlobalSoilMap products. Such countries include Australia (http://www.clw.csiro.au/aclep/soilandlandscapegrid/index.html) and the USA (http://157.182.4.221/arcgis/rest/services/globalSoilMap). Other countries have made significant progress towards the delivery of these products (e.g., France, Denmark, Scotland), and many others have indicated their willingness to contribute to the GlobalSoilMap products (e.g., Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Russian Federation, China, Nigeria, Indonesia, India, Japan, New Zealand, Belgium, The Netherlands, Romania, Greece, Portugal, Morocco). As GlobalSoilMap produces essential soil attributes for soil functions it is strongly related to soil capacity. It also aims to constitute a base-line for the future assessment of soil condition which in turn may be related to soil codification, for instance for carbon storage accounting and verification A dedicated Working Group has been recently established under the International Union of Soil Science (IUSS). The successful generation and delivery of high resolution soil property maps would require coordinated efforts from all nations, institutions and individuals alike. This IUSS Working Group would provide a forum to encourage the participation and contribution of all nations, institutions and individuals in an open and democratic fashion warranted by such undertaking.
