5. Reidentification of the Holotype Specimen of Trilophosaurus buettneri Case, 1928 (Archosauromorpha, Trilophosauridae) from the Upper Triassic of Crosby County, Texas, U.S.A.

Abstract

The Late Triassic archosauromorph Trilophosaurus buettneri is known from many sites in the Dockum Group and Chinle Formation of Texas and Arizona, spanning nearly 10 Ma from the Otischalkian to the Adamanian estimated holochrons. The holotype specimen, UMMP 2338, was described as a small fragment of a lower jaw in 1928 by E.C. Case. However, at the time no other specimens of the taxon were known. The present availability of several nearly complete skulls, mandibles, and postcranial skeletons referred to T. buettneri allows for reexamination of the anatomical context of the holotype. Here, we provide high-resolution photographs and 3D models of UMMP 2338 to justify our reidentification of the holotypic specimen of T. buettneri as an incomplete maxilla, which may have important implications for future work on trilophosaurid archosauromorphs. Abstract

Equations estimating body mass were used to depict a near 5-million-year history of size change in pocket gophers and cotton rats from the Meade Basin of southwestern Kansas. Although phyletic size decrease was noted in Sigmodon minor and Geomys minor and size increase in Geomys quinni, no long-term intra-basin size trends were observed. Immediately following the Huckleberry Ridge ash-fall at 2.11 Ma, the small Pliocene cotton rat S. minor became extinct, a large cotton rat entered the basin, two gophers became extinct, and two new ones entered the basin. Assuming the same rodent contingent at the Short Haul locality as at the Aries A site, between deposition of the Borchers and Short Haul assemblages, minimally about 0.12 million years, 40% of the Meade Basin rodent fauna turned over and Microtus dispersed into North America across Beringia. Geochemical environmental proxy data did not identify significant climatic events in the Borchers Badlands Pleistocene sequence; consequently it is possible that a super-eruption from the Yellowstone caldera was at least partly responsible for size shifts in cotton rats and pocket gophers and significant modifications to the Meade Basin rodent community. Rick (2017. “Were Hominins in California ∼130,000 Years Ago?” PaleoAmerica3 (3): 200–202) takes issue with our argument [Holen, S. R., T. A. Deméré, D. C. Fisher, R. Fullagar, J. B. Paces, G. T. Jefferson, J. M. Beeton, et al. (2017. “A 130,000-Year-Old Archaeological Site in Southern California, USA.” Nature544 (7651): 479–483) that the assemblage of bones and stones at the Cerutti Mastodon (CM) site implicates hominin activity in site formation 130,000 years ago. Braje et al. propose instead that features of the CM site can be better explained by geological or other causes unrelated to ancient human activity. However, we contend that their conclusion reflects an incomplete assessment of our evidence. They further propose a standard of evidence at odds with current practice in the philosophy of science, and misuse a commonly quoted aphorism that “extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.”

Abstract

ABSTRACTHaynes [2017 “The Cerutti Mastodon.” PaleoAmerica3 (3): 196–199] criticizes numerous aspects of our analysis of the Cerutti Mastodon (CM) site, but central among his points is the claim that heavy equipment broke the bones and stones that we interpret as evidence of ancient human activity. This notion can be discounted primarily because most of the relevant CM fragments were found coated in thick crusts of pedogenic carbonate clearly showing that breakage occurred thousands of years ago. Haynes also raises questions about site stratigraphy, radiometric dating, and absence of other artifactual evidence. The stratigraphic context of CM bones and rocks is well-defined, and the Pleistocene site stratigraphy remained intact before excavation. Knapped stone tools are not a requirement in bone processing archaeological sites. In the absence of other plausible explanations for the multiple lines of evidence, we maintain that hominins broke the CM bones using stone hammers and anvils.
