Abstract

A study was conducted to evaluate a parallel route building algorithm. The study considers an application of the algorithm to the vehicle routing and scheduling problem with time windows (VRSPTW). Results show that the parallel approach exhibits much better solutions compared to the sequential approach for pure random and mix random problems. However, the sequential approach outperforms the parallel approach in solving pure clustered problems.

Abstract

This article focuses on GeoRoute, a graphical software package for the management of information associated with street networks. GeoRoute is unique in several ways because it is based on a street network structure specifically designed to store and manipulate large networks and runs on personal and minicomputers. It can handle both node-routing and arc-routing problems. It has an automated cartography facility that generates maps from the database of streets and intersections. Maps can be customized and they can be edited using the interactive map editor. It has a very flexible route optimization system, generating routes that can also be graphically modified by the interactive route editor. The street network is made up of the following four elements, nodes locations where a link begins or ends, links connections between two nodes, streets sets of ordered links sharing a common identification and link plottings sequences of intermediate points describing the shape of the link.

Abstract

The fixed cost linear programming problem (FCLP) refers to a linear programming problem in which each variable incurs a fixed cost or charge, in addition to its linear cost, whenever the variable takes a strictly positive value. The study is devoted to the development of a cutting plane method and its role in the perspective of a general framework (essentially a branch-and-bound) for FCLP algorithms. Analysis of the structure and properties of the problem reveals that algorithms which seek local minimum points (minimum with respect to neighborhood) are almost certain to be non-effective because of the proliferation of these local minima. The cutting plane method developed here (the FCLP cut) comes as the generalization, for the non-convex case, of outer linearization methods used for convex problems. The FCLP cut is developed from a linear under approximation of the FCLP objective function. Convergence properties of the method are studied in depth and sufficient conditions for convergence to a global optimal solution are identified. The most interesting fact is the constructive similarity demonstrated between the Benders and FCLP cuts; they differ only by the space in which they are derived.
