A plasma expansion model is developed. It is used to compute flash-over propagation upon spacecraft solar panels. In order to take into consideration the plasma extinction, a cathode spot model is developed and coupled to a plasma expansion model. A minimum on the sheath potential has been found, and it explains the end of plasma emission by the cathode and, therefore, the end of the plasma expansion. Numerical results are compared with experimental measurements and are in good agreement with them. The model can be later used to prevent arcing on spacecrafts solar panels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Calcified aortic stenosis is a common cardiovascular disease whose prevalence increases with age (10% in people over 70). To date, there is no drug treatment and the only option available to patients is surgical aortic valve replacement, which usually involves implantation of a bioprosthesis (BP). The Achilles heel of this valve substrate is the irreversible structural degeneration of the aortic valve bioprosthesis (SVD), which limits its durability. The aim of this work is to develop a model that allows the SVD to be studied in a physiological context as close as possible to that of humans. Orthotopic implantation of a BP was performed in the Yucatan minipig, a model with good phenotypic control and metabolic properties close to those of humans. Avalus 19 BP is implanted in 18-month-old male Yucatan minipigs. The surgery was refined pre-, intra- and postoperatively before the animals were enrolled in the SVD study protocol (3-month postoperative follow-up). Echocardiography was performed during the follow-up. Explantation of the bioprostheses in the victims and analysis by histology and electron microscopy. Eleven Yucatan minipigs (average 65.4 ± 8.8 kg) were operated on: 5 for model validation and 6 as part of the SVD study protocol. The first animals were used to refine the anaesthesia, surgical methods and resuscitation of the pig. Animals were sacrificed after 2 days and up to 3 months after surgery. Three animals died prematurely during the 3-month follow-up protocol. The ETT and histological data confirmed the relevance of the model (Fig. 1). Paraffin crystallization in crude oils and in gas condensates is a major problem for petroleum exploitation. Thermodynamic models are used to evaluate the risk. With them, one calculates the Wax Appearance Temperature (WAT) as well as the crystallized fraction as a function of temperature, for temperatures below the WAT. During development, these models are tested against experimental data. Although different methods for measuring the WAT are available in the literature and at petroleum companies, such methods unfortunately do not exist for measuring the crystallized fraction as a function of temperature. In this work, we have developed a low resolution NMR method for measuring the crystallized fraction as a function of temperature. The method was first evaluated using pure samples and was then applied to crude oils. The results were compared to those obtained both from differential calorimetry and from the model. La cristallisation des paraffines dans les pétroles bruts et même dans les gaz à condensat est un problème majeur dans le domaine de l'exploitation pétrolière. Afin d'évaluer ce risque, on utilise des modèles thermodynamiques. Ils permettent de calculer la température de cristallisation commençante (TCC) ou Wax Appearance Temperature (WAT) ainsi que la fraction cristallisée en fonction de la température (pour des températures inférieures à la TCC). Lors de leur développement, ces modèles doivent être évalués sur des données expérimentales. Il existe dans la littérature et chez les pétroliers différentes méthodes pour mesurer la TCC, malheureusement il n'en est pas de même pour la fraction cristallisée en fonction de la température. Dans cet article, nous avons développé une méthode de RMN basse résolution afin de mesurer la fraction cristallisée en fonction de la température. Elle a d'abord été évaluée sur des mélanges de corps purs puis elle a été appliquée à des pétroles bruts. Les résultats ont été comparés à ceux obtenus par analyse calorimétrique différentielle ainsi qu'aux résultats du modèle.

Depuis sa création, la RMN n'a cessé de progresser. Plus récemment, de nouvelles techniques lui ont permis d'une part d'étendre encore son champ d'application et d'autre part de fournir des informations plus précises sur les échantillons analysés. Il s'agit principalement de la RMN à haute résolution du solide, qui permet d'obtenir des spectres à bandes fines d'échantillons solides, de la RMN à haute pression et de la RMN à deux dimensions. Les applications de ces techniques sont d'un grand intérêt pratique. Elles permettent en effet l'étude des zéolites, catalyseurs très utilisés dans l'industrie, du comportement et de la structure des polymères à l'état solide, des combustibles fossiles solides pour la première de ces nouvelles techniques, l'étude des mécanismes de catalyse homogène et du comportement des fluides supercritiques pour la seconde et de déterminer relativement simplement la structure chimique des grosses molécules complexes pour la troisième. Nous évoquerons également la contribution de la RMN à l'analyse des clusters moléculaires. Constant progress has been made in the leading applications of NMR. Recently, new techniques have extended applications of NMR and have provided more precise data on the samples analyzed. This is mainly the case of the high-resolution NMR analysis of solids where spectra with fine bands of solid samples can be obtained. It is also the case of high-pressure NMR analysis and two-dimensional NMR analysis. The use of such techniques is of great practical interest, for example in analyzing zeolites which are catalysts that are widely used in industry. They can also be used to analyze the behavior and structure of polymers in a solid state and of solid fossil fuels for the first of such new techniques, of homogeneous-catalysis mechanisms, and of the behavior of supercritical fluids for the second. They are used for relatively simply determining the chemical structure of large complex molecules for the third technique. This article also reviews the contribution of NMR to the analysis of molecular clusters.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have been used in recent years in many fields, including the chemical and petroleum industries, and medicine. Following a review of the basic principles of these two techniques, their applications concerning the study of fluids in porous media are presented. The use of NMR in petrophysics is limited to the study of porosity, permeability, wettability, and the determination of the pore size distribution and saturation in a sample. MRI is an extremely useful technique, not only as a tomographic approach but, above all, because, it helps today to identify certain properties, such as velocity images. This article also presents the results obtained at Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP) concerning the study of wettability by NMR and the use of a high magnetic field to visualize fluids in porous media. In the future, a major potential use of NMR for the study of fluids in porous media resides in the extrapolation of the results obtained by spectroscopy to wireline logs, and to imaging. L'évaluation du taux de récupération optimale d'un gisement d'hydrocarbures repose sur l'utilisation des lois d'écoulements polyphasiques en milieu poreux : les lois de Darcy généralisées. Celles-ci permettent d'interpréter des mesures de laboratoire sur des échantillons de gisement, afin de les introduire dans les modèles numériques de simulation à l'échelle du réservoir. Pour envisager une étude approfondie de ce qui se passe en matière d'écoulement à l'intérieur des milieux poreux, il faut évaluer de manière très précise la distribution des fluides. Pour cette raison, les études tomographiques apportent une contribution importante à la connaissance des écoulements en milieu poreux. Dans cet article la méthode tomographique envisagée est l'imagerie par résonance magnétique (IRM) qui est une extension de la résonance magnétique nucléaire (RMN). Les principes de ces deux méthodes sont tout d'abord rappelés. Dans l'industrie pétrolière, la RMN est une technique d'analyse utilisée en particulier pour la détermination des structures moyennes des composés hydrocarbonés. En pétrophysique son emploi est essentiellement limitée à quatre types d'applications. L'étude des caractéristiques pétrophysiques globales conduit à déterminer la porosité d'un échantillon de manière aussi précise que par une méthode standard ; la perméabilité est également évaluée au moyen d'une relation empirique entre la perméabilité, la porosité et les données RMN. La distribution des tailles de pores est possible mais nécessite des hypothèses sur les échantillons étudiés. Enfin la détermination des saturations a été essentiellement étendue à l'imagerie. L'étude de la mouillabilité est à notre avis une des applications les plus intéressantes de la RMN, car elle est un paramètre difficilement mesurable. Cette étude nécessite de savoir découpler les influences simultanées de la distribution des tailles de pores et de la mouillabilité sur les temps de relaxation. C'est en ce sens que sont orientées actuellement les recherches à l'Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP). La figure 6 montre une évolution linéaire de l'inverse du temps de relaxation T1 en fonction de l'inverse de la taille de particules pour des échantillons composés de poudre de carbure de silicium de différentes granulométries. Les poudres utilisées sont soit mouillables à l'eau soit mouillables à l'huile. L'influence de la mouillabilité est plus importante pour les petites granulométries que pour les grandes. Ces résultats sont en accord avec les modèles d'interprétation proposés jusqu'à présent. Depuis la première application présentée, l'utilisation de l'IRM Pour visualiser les fluides en milieu poreux a fait l'objet d'une importante bibliographie. Au cours de ces dix dernières années, l'augmentation de la performance des imageurs IRM a permis d'améliorer la reconstruction des images et la résolution spatiale. Différentes techniques sont utilisées pour différencier dans les images les protons de l'eau des protons de l'huile. A I'IFP, nous utilisons un champ magnétique élevé de 9,4 T qui permet de différencier les protons de l'huile (fig. 7) de ceux de l'eau (fig. 8) et d'obtenir des coupes d'épaisseur 50 µm. L'obtention de profils de saturation (fig. 10) a permis de comparer les profils obtenus par IRM à ceux obtenus par simulation numérique de l'expérience de déplacement étudiée (fig. 11). Cette comparaison valide les profils de saturation expérimentaux et définit une possible utilisation de l'IRM comme méthode de détermination des courbes de perméabilités relatives et de pression capillaire représentatives d'une expérience de déplacement. Cependant un intérêt majeur de l'IRM par rapport à d'autres techniques tomographiques est d'apporter une meilleure résolution, une possibilité d'obtenir une information tridimensionnelle ainsi que des paramètres non accessibles jusqu'à présent (images de vitesse). De plus, l'extrapolation des résultats obtenus en spectroscopie à l'imagerie ou aux diagraphies constitue une potentialité importante de la RMN pour l'avenir et est l'enjeu de recherches actives dans de nombreux laboratoires ou compagnies pétrolières dans le monde.

Conventional Frozen elephant trunk (FET) repair for acute type A dissection (ATAD) with zone 3 delivery promotes false lumen (FL) thrombosis. Simplified delivery FET (SD-FET) technique is characterised by proximalization in zone 0 and a stent length of 100 mm. The aim of the study was to assess the effects of the proximalization on mid-term aortic remodelling. Retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database of 30 consecutive patients treated with SD-FET in a single centre between September 2018 and January 2023. Maximum aortic diameters of residual dissection (true lumen [TL], FL and total aortic diameter, and FL status) were assessed in 4 zones using centerline reconstructions (Aquarius) in each imaging (CTA) performed during follow-up (FU). Demographic, aortic and non-aortic events were recorded. Mixed models were used to analyse repeated diameters measurement over time. Mean FU was 15.8 months (1-38), early survival was 87%. During FU, 2 patients required aortic reintervention (TEVAR) and 1 patient died after 4 months due to a rupture of the coeliac trunk during follow-up. Over a 12-month period, we observed positive remodelling of the proximal descending aorta with a significant decrease in FL diameter by 10.2 mm, which was associated with enlargement of the TL and promotion of FL thrombosis, no significant remodelling at the level of the distal thoracic aorta and negative remodelling at the level of the coeliac [GG1] trunk with a trend towards an increase in FL diameter of 3 mm. The infra-renal aorta was stable over time (Fig. 1). Proximalization and its advanced benefits must not undermine the long-term strength of FET procedure. Our results suggest similar aortic remodeling of the residual dissection compared to the literature, with sustained diameter reduction and FL thrombosis in the proximal and median descending aorta. Few studies have evaluated the utility of quantifying myocardial work (MW) in degenerative mitral regurgitation (DMR) We aimed to investigate MW alteration in a large population of patients with DMR. Patients with none to severe DMR were prospectively enrolled and underwent a complete transthoracic echocardiography. Global left ventricular (LV) longitudinal strain (GLS) was assessed. Myocardial work was measured retrospectively. Patients were divided into two groups according to the severity of DMR at baseline (grade 0–2, n = 331; grade 3–4, n = 394). Major cardiovascular events were recorded and censored at the time of mitral valve surgery. A total of 725 patients (≥ 16 years, 55 ± 16 years, males 69%) were included. Patients with grade 3-4 DMR were older (61 ± 14 vs. 48 ± 17 years, P < 0.0001), more often men (73 vs. 43%, P < 0.0001), had more cardiovascular risk factors, were more symptomatic, and had higher levels of NT-pro-BNP (495 ± 972 vs. 196 ± 366, P < 0.0001). Heart rate (71 ± 12 vs. 68 ± 12, P = 0.003) and systolic BP (135 ± 18 vs. 129 ± 18, P < 0.0001) were slightly higher. Left ventricular and atrial remodeling was worse, PASP was higher (39 ± 15 vs. 27 ± 7 mmHg, P < 0.0001), LV EF (69 ± 7 vs. 66 ± 7%, P < 0.0001) and GLS (21.5 ± 3.0 vs. 20.7 ± 2.4, P = 0.0001) were higher but the forward stroke volume index (P < 0.0001) was lower. Regarding MW, patients with a grade 3–4 DMR had an increase in global work index (GWI, 2291 ± 485 vs. 2022 ± 401, P < 0.0001), global constructive work (GCW, 2626 ± 526 vs. 2533 ± 477, P < 0.0001), global positive work (GPW, 2522 ± 497 vs. 2357 ± 437, P < 0.0001), but a decrease in global wasted work (120 ± 65 vs. 124 ± 88, P < 0.0001) and global negative work (233 ± 114 vs. 330 ± 132, P < 0.0001). During follow-up (5.3 ± 3.3 years), 111 events were recorded (7 cardiovascular deaths, 67 heart failure symptoms, 31 new cases of AF, 8 strokes), and MV/Mitraclip surgery was performed in 318 (81%) patients with DMR grade 3–4, but in only 13 (4%) of patients with grade 0–2. Using the univariable Cox model, GLS was a marginal predictor of events (P = 0.04), whereas MW was a strong predictor of outcome (GWI, P < 0.0001; GCW, P < 0.0001; GPW, P < 0.0001) The application of MW to DMR highlights unique pathophysiological features and appears to be a promising tool for predicting outcome.
