Abstract

This paper contains a compilation of parameters influencing the charge collection process extracted from a comprehensive study of partially depleted Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors with small (<25 um$^2$) collection electrodes fabricated in the TowerJazz 180 nm CMOS process. These results gave guidance for the optimisation of the diode implemented in ALPIDE, the chip used in the second generation Inner Tracking System of ALICE, and serve as reference for future simulation studies of similar devices. The studied parameters include: reverse substrate bias, epitaxial layer thickness, charge collection electrode size and the spacing of the electrode to surrounding in-pixel electronics. The results from pixels of 28 um pitch confirm that even in partially depleted circuits, charge collection can be fast (<10 ns), and quantify the influence of the parameters onto the signal sharing and amplitudes, highlighting the importance of a correct spacing between wells and of the impact of the reverse substrate bias.

Abstract

The suppression of Zeeman energy splitting due to spin-dependent interactions within a Bose-Einstein condensate (the spin Meissner effect) was predicted to occur up to a certain value of magnetic field strength. We report a clear observation of this effect in semimagnetic microcavities which exhibit the giant Zeeman energy splitting between two spin-polarised polariton states as high as 2 meV, and demonstrate that partial suppression of energy difference occurs already in the uncondensed phase in a striking similarity to the up-critical superconductors in the fluctuation dominated regime. These observations are explained quantitatively by a kinetic model accounting for both the condensed and uncondensed polaritons and taking into account the non-equilibrium character of the system., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

We evidence magnetic field triggered polariton lasing in a microcavity containing semimagnetic quantum wells. This effect is associated with a decrease of the polariton lasing threshold power in magnetic field. The observed magnetic field dependence of the threshold power systematically exhibits a minimum which only weakly depends on the zero-field photon-exciton detuning. These results are interpreted as a consequence of the polariton giant Zeeman splitting which in magnetic field: leads to a decrease of the number of accessible states in the lowest polariton branch by a factor of two, and substantially changes the photon-exciton detuning., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

This work presents epitaxial growth and optical spectroscopy of CdTe quantum dots (QDs) in (Cd,Zn,Mg)Te barriers placed on the top of (Cd,Zn,Mg)Te distributed Bragg reflector. The formed photonic mode in our half-cavity structure permits to enhance the local excitation intensity and extraction efficiency of the QD photoluminescence, while suppressing the reflectance within the spectral range covering the QD transitions. This allows to perform coherent, nonlinear, resonant spectroscopy of individual QDs. The coherence dynamics of a charged exciton is measured via four-wave mixing, with the estimated dephasing time $T_2=(210\,\pm\,40)$ ps. The same structure contains QDs doped with single Mn$^{2+}$ ions, as detected in photoluminescence spectra. Our work therefore paves the way toward investigating and controlling an exciton coherence coupled, via $s$,$p$-$d$ exchange interaction, with an individual spin of a magnetic dopant., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The photonics involving II-VI epitaxial layers was limited so far to structures based on a single planar microcavity. Here, we present double, vertically coupled, ZnTe optical microcavities in planar and 3-D photonic molecule geometry. We design the structures with the help of transfer matrix method calculations and we establish their fabrication technology by molecular beam epitaxy. We characterize the samples by reflectivity spatial mapping and study them by measurements of angle-integrated and angle-resolved photoluminescence and reflectivity. We efficiently tailor the interaction strength of the cavities optical modes by an adjustment of the spatial separation between the microcavities, their thickness ratio and by the size of micropillars etched out of the planar structure. Coupling constants extracted from our measurements agree well with those determined in calculations in the frame of a tight-binding approach applied to one-dimensional photonic structures.

Abstract

The observation of spin-related phenomena of microcavity polaritons has been limited due to weak Zeeman effect of non-magnetic semiconductors. We demonstrate that the incorporation of magnetic ions into quantum wells placed in a non-magnetic microcavity results in enhanced effects of magnetic field on exciton-polaritons. We show that in such a structure the Zeeman splitting of exciton-polaritons strongly depends on the photon - exciton detuning and polariton wavevector. Our experimental data are explained by a model where the impact of magnetic field on the lower polariton state is directly inherited from the excitonic component, and the coupling strength to cavity photon is modified by external magnetic field.

Abstract

We present a comparative study of two self-assembled quantum dot (QD) systems based on II-VI compounds: CdTe/ZnTe and CdSe/ZnSe. Using magneto-optical techniques we investigated a large population of individual QDs. The systematic photoluminescence studies of emission lines related to the recombination of neutral exciton X, biexciton XX, and singly charged excitons (X$^+$, X$^-$) allowed us to determine average parameters describing CdTe QDs (CdSe QDs): X-XX transition energy difference 12 meV (24 meV); fine-structure splitting $\delta_{1}=$0.14 meV ($\delta_{1}=$0.47 meV); $g$-factor $g=$2.12 ($g=$1.71); diamagnetic shift $\gamma=$2.5 $\mu$eV$/$T$^{2}$ ($\gamma=$1.3 $\mu$eV$/$T$^{2}$). Abstract

Solotronics, optoelectronics based on solitary dopants, is an emerging field of research and technology reaching the ultimate limit of miniaturization. It aims at exploiting quantum properties of individual ions or defects embedded in a semiconductor matrix. As already shown, optical control of a spin of a magnetic ion is feasible employing photo-generated carriers confined in a quantum dot. A non-radiative recombination, regarded as a severe problem, limited development of quantum dots with magnetic ions. Our photoluminescence studies on, so far unexplored, individual CdTe dots with single cobalt ions and individual CdSe dots with single manganese ions show, however, that even if energetically allowed, the single ion related non-radiative recombination is negligible in such zero-dimensional structures. This opens solotronics for a wide range of even not yet considered systems. Abstract

Magnetooptical properties of (Ga,Mn)N layers containing various concentrations of Fe-rich nanocrystals embedded in paramagnetic (Ga,Fe)N layers are reported. Previous studies of such samples demonstrated that magnetization consists of a paramagnetic contribution due to substitutional diluted Fe ions as well as of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic components originating from Fe-rich nanocrystals, whose relative abundance can be controlled by the grow conditions. The nanocrystals are found to broaden and to reduce the magnitude of the excitonic features. However, the ferromagnetic contribution, clearly seen in SQUID magnetometry, is not revealed by magnetic circular dichroism (MCD). Possible reasons for differences in magnetic response determined by MCD and SQUID measurements are discussed., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The question of the correlation between magnetization, band splittings, and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in the fundamental gap region of dilute magnetic semiconductors is examined experimentally and theoretically taking the case of wurtzite Ga(1-x)FexN as an example. Magnetization and polarization-resolved reflectivity measurements have been performed down to 2K and up to 7T for x = 0.2%. Optical transitions originating from all three free excitons A, B and C, specific to the wurtzite structure, have been observed and their evolution with the magnetic field determined. It is demonstrated that the magnitude of the exciton splittings evaluated from reflectivity-MCD data can be overestimated by more than a factor of 2, as compared to the values obtained by describing the polarization-resolved reflectivity spectra with appropriate dielectric functions. A series of model calculations shows that the quantitative inaccuracy of MCD originates from a substantial influence of the magnetization-dependent exchange interactions not only on the spin splittings of excitons but also upon their linewidth and oscillator strength. At the same time, a method is proposed that allows to evaluate the field and temperature dependencies of the magnetization from MCD spectra. The accurate values of the excitonic splittings and of the magnetization reported here substantiate the magnitudes of the apparent $sp-d$ exchange integrals in (Ga,Fe)N previously determined., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

This work presents methods of controlling the density of self-assembled CdTe quantum dots (QDs) grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Two approaches are discussed: increasing the deposition temperature of CdTe and the reduction of CdTe layer thickness. Photoluminescence (PL) measurements at low temperature confirms that both methods can be used for significant reduction of QDs density from 10$^{10}$QD/cm$^2$ to 10$^7$-10$^8$QD/cm$^2$. Abstract

8th World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion; 296-301, We report the use of slot-die coating as an up-scalable technique to convert a co-evaporated CsBr/PbI2 precursor layer into a triple-cation mixed halide perovskite. We optimize this two-step deposition process by varying the coating parameters such as the evaporation rates in the first step and the solution concentration and dispense rates in the second step. We observe that the co-evaporation of CsBr and PbI2 at 0.1 A s-1 and 1.0 A s-1, respectively, results in a porous layer which is desired for the conversion by slot-die coating. In the second step, with an optimization of solution concentration (40.7 mg/mL) and solution dispense rate (3.3 µL s-1), uniform perovskite film with large grain size on the 5 x 5 cm² substrates is achieved. The homogeneity, composition and stoichiometry of the converted perovskite film were studied using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), from surface to bulk, using in depth profiling by sequential Ar+ sputtering. The perovskite layer has been implemented into a single-junction device, yielding a champion efficiency of 13.5% power conversion efficiency with hysteresis (average 10 - 11%), which is the first cell efficiency obtained using this hybrid deposition method based on the dual-source CsBr/PbI2 thermal evaporation and slot-die coating.

Abstract

Context. Until recently, camera networks designed for monitoring fireballs worldwide were not fully automated, implying that in case of a meteorite fall, the recovery campaign was rarely immediate. This was an important limiting factor as the most fragile - hence precious - meteorites must be recovered rapidly to avoid their alteration. Aims. The Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network (FRIPON) scientific project was designed to overcome this limitation. This network comprises a fully automated camera and radio network deployed over a significant fraction of western Europe and a small fraction of Canada. As of today, it consists of 150 cameras and 25 European radio receivers and covers an area of about 1.5 × 10km. Methods. The FRIPON network, fully operational since 2018, has been monitoring meteoroid entries since 2016, thereby allowing the characterization of their dynamical and physical properties. In addition, the level of automation of the network makes it possible to trigger a meteorite recovery campaign only a few hours after it reaches the surface of the Earth. Recovery campaigns are only organized for meteorites with final masses estimated of at least 500 g, which is about one event per year in France. No recovery campaign is organized in the case of smaller final masses on the order of 50 to 100 g, which happens about three times a year; instead, the information is delivered to the local media so that it can reach the inhabitants living in the vicinity of the fall. Results. Nearly 4000 meteoroids have been detected so far and characterized by FRIPON. The distribution of their orbits appears to be bimodal, with a cometary population and a main belt population. Sporadic meteors amount to about 55% of all meteors. A first estimate of the absolute meteoroid flux (mag < -5; meteoroid size ≥∼1 cm) amounts to 1250/yr/10km. This value is compatible with previous estimates. Finally, the first meteorite was recovered in Italy (Cavezzo, January 2020) thanks to the PRISMA network, a component of the FRIPON science project., FRIPON was initiated by funding from ANR (grant N.13- BS05-0009-03), carried by the Paris Observatory, Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris-Saclay University and Institut Pythéas (LAM-CEREGE). Abstract

MICROSCOPIE+CATREN:ING+TLN:PAF:FMO:JRO:MAO:LPI; International audience; Stimulated by recent advances in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), single-atom catalysts (SACs) have become prominent materials in heterogeneous catalysis [1]. In spite of the numerous reports on promising catalytic performance and noble-metal saving, single-atom stabilization remains a challenge – in particular for noble metals on oxides [2,3]. In addition, single atoms are not necessarily more efficient than their cluster or nanoparticle counterparts [3,4]. In this communication, the previous issues will be illustrated for two prototypical catalytic systems: CO oxidation on Pt/Al2O3 and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction over Pt/TiO2. The combined use of catalytic testing, STEM, operando X-ray and infrared absorption spectroscopies, and DFT calculations, reveals the influence of the reactive environment on Pt nuclearity and oxidation state (generally clustering and reduction), which in turn correlates to changes in catalytic activity [5–8].
