2. Dust dynamics and vertical settling in gravitoturbulent protoplanetary discs

Abstract

Gravitational instability (GI) controls the dynamics of young massive protoplanetary discs. Apart from facilitating gas accretion on to the central protostar, it must also impact on the process of planet formation: directly through fragmentation, and indirectly through the turbulent concentration of small solids. To understand the latter process, it is essential to determine the dust dynamics in such a turbulent flow. For that purpose, we conduct a series of 3D shearing box simulations of coupled gas and dust, including the gas's self-gravity and scanning a range of Stokes numbers, from 0.001 to ~0.2. First, we show that the vertical settling of dust in the midplane is significantly impeded by gravitoturbulence, with the dust scale-height roughly 0.6 times the gas scale height for centimetre grains. This is a result of the strong vertical diffusion issuing from (a) small-scale inertial-wave turbulence feeding off the GI spiral waves and (b) the larger-scale vertical circulations that naturally accompany the spirals. Second, we show that at R=50 AU concentration events involving sub-metre particles and yielding order 1 dust to gas ratios are rare and last for less than an orbit. Moreover, dust concentration is less efficient in 3D than in 2D simulations. We conclude that GI is not especially prone to the turbulent accumulation of dust grains. Finally, the large dust scale-height measured in simulations could be, in the future, compared with that of edge-on discs seen by ALMA, thus aiding detection and characterisation of GI in real systems., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS, 13 pages

Abstract

Recent advances in adaptive optics (AO) have led to the implementation of wide field-of-view AO systems. A number of wide-field AO systems are also planned for the forthcoming Extremely Large Telescopes. Such systems have multiple wavefront sensors of different types, and usually multiple deformable mirrors (DMs). Here, we report on our experience integrating cameras and DMs with the real-time control systems of two wide-field AO systems. These are CANARY, which has been operating on-sky since 2010, and DRAGON, which is a laboratory adaptive optics real-time demonstrator instrument. We detail the issues and difficulties that arose, along with the solutions we developed. Abstract

This work is devoted to a theoretical and numerical study of the dynamics of a two-phase system vapour bubble in equilibrium with its liquid phase under translational vibrations in the absence of gravity. The bubble is initially located in the container centre. The liquid and vapour phases are considered as viscous and incompressible. Analysis focuses on the vibrational conditions used in experiments with the two-phase system SF $_6$ in the MIR space station and with the two-phase system para-Hydrogen (p-H $_2$) under magnetic compensation of Earth's gravity. These conditions correspond to small-amplitude high-frequency vibrations. Under vibrations, additionally to the forced oscillations, an average displacement of the bubble to the wall is observed due to an average vibrational attraction force related to the Bernoulli effect. Vibrational conditions for SF $_6$ correspond to much smaller average vibrational force (weak vibrations) than for p-H $_2$ (strong vibrations). For weak vibrations, the role of the initial vibration phase is crucial. The difference in the behaviour at different initial phases is explained using a simple mechanical model. For strong vibrations, the average displacement to the wall stops when the bubble reaches a quasi-equilibrium position where the resulting average force is zero. At large vibration velocity amplitudes this position is near the wall where the bubble performs only forced oscillations. At moderate vibration velocity amplitudes the bubble average displacement stops at a finite distance from the wall, then large-scale damped oscillations around this position accompanied by forced oscillations are observed. Abstract

The Wide-field High-resolution Infrared TElescope (WHITE) will be dedicated in the first years of its life to carrying out a few (well focused in terms of science objectives and time) legacy surveys. WHITE would have an angular resolution of ~0.3'' homogeneous over ~0.7 sq. deg. in the wavelength range 1 - 5 um, which means that we will very efficiently use all the available observational time during night time and day time. Moreover, the deepest observations will be performed by summing up shorter individual frames. We will have a temporal information that can be used to study variable objects. The three key science objectives of WHITE are : 1) A complete survey of the Magellanic Clouds to make a complete census of young stellar objects in the clouds and in the bridge and to study their star formation history and the link with the Milky Way. The interaction of the two clouds with our Galaxy might the closest example of a minor merging event that could be the main driver of galaxy evolution in the last 5 Gyrs. 2) The building of the first sample of dusty supernovae at z<1.2 in the near infrared range (1-5 um) to constrain the equation of state from these obscured objects, study the formation of dust in galaxies and build the first high resolution sample of high redshift galaxies observed in their optical frame 3) A very wide weak lensing survey over that would allow to estimate the equation of state in a way that would favourably compete with space projects., Comment: Invited talk to the 2nd ARENA Conference : "The Astrophysical Science Cases at Dome C" Potsdam 17-21 September, 2007
