Abstract

The manipulation of spin-phonon coupling in both formations and explorations of magnetism in two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnetic semiconductors facilitates unprecedented prospects for spintronics devices. The interlayer engineering tunes spin-phonon coupling significantly and holds the promise for controllable magnetism via organic cation intercalation. Here, we present spectroscopic evidence to reveal the intercalation effect on intrinsic magnetic and electronic transitions in quasi-two-dimensional Cr2Ge2Te6 using tetrabutyl ammonium as the intercalant. The temperature-evolution of Raman modes E_g^3 and A_g^1, along with the magnetization measurements, unambiguously captures the enhancement of the ferromagnetic Curie temperature in the intercalated heterostructure. Moreover, the E_g^4 mode highlighted the increased effect of spin-phonon interaction in magnetic order-induced lattice distortion. Combined with the first-principle calculations, we observed a substantial number of electrons transferred from TBA+ to Cr through the interface. These results provide the interplay between spin-phonon coupling and magnetic ordering in van der Waals magnets where Raman fingerprints would be highly beneficial for further understanding the manipulation of magnetism in layered heterostructures.

32. AMORPH: A statistical program for characterizing amorphous materials by X-ray diffraction

Abstract

AMORPH utilizes a new Bayesian statistical approach to interpreting X-ray diffraction results of samples with both crystalline and amorphous components. AMORPH fits X-ray diffraction patterns with a mixture of narrow and wide components, simultaneously inferring all of the model parameters and quantifying their uncertainties. The program simulates background patterns previously applied manually, providing reproducible results, and significantly reducing inter- and intra-user biases. This approach allows for the quantification of amorphous and crystalline materials and for the characterization of the amorphous component, including properties such as the centre of mass, width, skewness, and nongaussianity of the amorphous component. Results demonstrate the applicability of this program for calculating amorphous contents of volcanic materials and independently modeling their properties in compositionally variable materials., Comment: Accepted for publication in Computers and Geosciences. 24 pages, 13 figures. Abstract

Critical leadership scholars have long recognised leadership as performative and reveal the symbolic, presentational and ritual aspects of leadership practice as meaning-making. This perspective, however, is neglected in mainstream understanding of police leadership. Drawing on Goffman’s dramaturgical framework and a qualitative study of policing leaders in the UK, this paper explores performativity and police leadership in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Removed from occupational symbols of the police station and performing leadership work exclusively in the home environment, the findings show that police leaders used the uniform as part of a strategy of impression management to construct front and back stage regions in the domestic sphere. In frontstage settings, the uniform was used to represent occupational authority and reinforce a sense of shared, professional identity and purpose, despite the physical separation between leaders and their staff. Alongside this, police leaders constructed and maintained backstage spaces for preparatory and reparative work, even within the home-working setting. The findings challenge traditional conceptualisations of the backstage as physical, boundaried space of the police station and instead reveal backstage space as fluid, dynamic and imagined. As police constabularies consider the impact of remote-working practices on the police workplace, the preservation of backstage spaces for police leaders during the COVID-19 pandemic reveals the value and necessity this backstage work in police leadership. 37. The LASER Model: A Systemic and Sustainable Approach for Achieving High Standards in Science Education. Summative Report Section 2: Overview

Abstract

The Leadership and Assistance for Science Education Reform (LASER) Model is a systemic approach to science learning and teaching based on five infrastructure pillars: research-based curriculum, differentiated professional development, administrative and community support, materials support, and assessment. This model uses the Science and Technology Concepts (STC) program, an inquiry-based curriculum with connections to mathematics and language arts. In August 2010, the Smithsonian Science Education Center (SSEC) received a grant of more than $25 million from the U.S. Department of Education's Investing in Innovation (i3) program for a five-year study to validate LASER model in three very diverse regions of the United States: rural North Carolina, northern New Mexico, and the Houston Independent School District (HISD). This report will provide a short description of each pillar, summarized from SSEC (Smithsonian Science Education Center) documentation, information gleaned from CREP's instruments and surveys, and general interpretations of that information.

40. 'Operating at the Limit of What Was Possible': A Case Study of Facilitator Experiences in an Open Online Course

Abstract

The experiences of course facilitators in connectivist-type MOOCs are poorly reported. Yet there is evidence that the values and beliefs of facilitators have an important impact on the learning experiences of participants, and that reducing their interactions with students may also reduce the effectiveness of the course. This study aimed to determine the experiences of the facilitators of an open online course in order to develop a deeper understanding of how those experiences may have influenced the course outcomes. Three facilitators recorded their reflective discussion following the completion of a successful open online course among undergraduate physiotherapy students and a cohort of qualified physiotherapists from around the world. Facilitators in this course aimed to increase the number of meaningful interactions between all participants, finding that this led to significant challenges in developing and maintaining learner relationships. There were a variety of pressures that exerted an influence on their involvement. Course design influenced the number, type and quality of interactions, which came at a high cost in facilitator time and energy. However, they also led to rewarding learning experiences for both facilitators and participants.

Abstract

This article considers the visual symbolism of policing as reflected by the presence or absence of police stations. The focus is England where recent years have witnessed a prolonged period of police station closure. The article draws on interviews with police estate managers and considers their reasons given for closure and consequent impact on visibility. The discussion is influenced by visual criminology and semiotics, as well as the concept of the abstract police developed by Jan Terpstra and colleagues, that police officers are now more abstract from the communities they serve, and from each other. Station closure was explained as being due to austerity, but also the unsuitability of 'legacy' buildings, changes in demand, and changes in police models. In these contexts, some closures may seem appropriate with public engagement maintained online. Moreover, poor community relations mean some may prefer not to have a local station. Yet, we argue that the visual presence or absence of a local police station can be read semiotically as a symbol of the police's investment, or conversely lack of interest, in the community. Abstract

The Napoleonic era was transformative for Cologne's churches. The wars that characterized this period brought destruction and upheaval. The invading French army that occupied the city in 1794 was an agent of the new Republic, a polity then at war with Catholicism. Most spectacularly, this resulted in the desacralization of Cologne's churches, some of which were turned into storage depots for the army or made into temples for the new republican cult. However, once Napoleon seized control of the Republic in 1799, a new French policy was enforced in the city and surrounding region. It restored many aspects of the old familiar religious order, but at the same time created new institutions of church management and preservation that survived the end of French rule in 1814.
