We present the timing and spectral studies of the Be/X-ray binary XTE J1946+274 during its 2018 and 2021 giant outbursts using observations with the SXT and the LAXPC instruments on the AstroSat satellite. Unlike the 1998 and 2010 outbursts, where a giant outburst was followed by several low intensity periodic outbursts, the 2018 and 2021 outbursts were single outbursts. The X-ray pulsations are detected over a broad energy band covering 0.5-80 keV from the compact object. We construct the spin evolution history of the pulsar over two decades and find that the pulsar spins-up during the outbursts but switches to spin-down state in the quiescent periods between the outbursts. Energy resolved pulse profiles generated in several bands in 0.5-80 keV show that the pulse shape varies with the energy. The energy spectrum of the pulsar is determined for the 2018 and 2021 outbursts. The best fit spectral models require presence of Cyclotron Resonant Scattering Feature (CRSF) at about 43 keV in the energy spectra of both the outbursts. We find indication of possible reversal in the correlation between the cyclotron line energy and luminosity which needs to be ascertained from future observations. Using the best fit spectra the X-ray luminosity of XTE J1946+274 is inferred to be $2.7 \times 10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$ for the 2018 observations and $2.3 \times 10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$ for the 2021 observations. We report the results of an observation of low mass X-ray binary GX 3+1 with {\it AstroSat}'s Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) and Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) instruments on-board for the first time. We have detected one Type-1 thermonuclear burst ($\sim$ 15 s) present in the LAXPC 20 light curve, with a double peak feature at higher energies and our study of the hardness-intensity diagram reveals that the source was in a soft banana state. The pre-burst emission could be described well by a thermally Comptonised model component. The burst spectra is modelled adopting a time-resolved spectroscopic method using a single color blackbody model added to the pre-burst model, to monitor the parametric changes as the burst decays. Based on our time-resolved spectroscopy, we claim that the detected burst is a photospheric radius expansion (PRE) burst. During the PRE phase, the blackbody flux is found to be approximately constant at an averaged value $\sim$ 2.56 in $10^{-8}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ units. On the basis of literature survey, we infer that \textit{AstroSat}/LAXPC 20 has detected a burst from GX 3+1 after more than a decade which is also a PRE one. Utilising the burst parameters obtained, we provide a new estimation to the source distance, which is $\sim$ 9.3 $\pm$ 0.4 kpc, calculated for an isotropic burst emission. We analyse the aperiodic flaring features, also known as shots, observed in Cyg X-1 in the 0.1-80 keV energy band using a 6.39 ks simultaneous observation with AstroSat and NICER. We detect 49 simultaneous shots in the soft and hard X-ray bands with NICER and AstroSat-LAXPC, respectively. We observe the shot profile for the first time in soft X-rays (0.1-3 keV), which shows a spectral peak at $\sim$2 keV. Using time-averaged spectroscopy, we measured the truncation of the inner accretion disk at $6.7\pm0.2$ gravitational radii. The shot-phase resolved spectroscopy allowed us to identify the origin of some of the brightest aperiodic peaks in the soft X-rays. We find that the accretion rate is consistent with a constant during the shots while the inner edge of the accretion disk moves inwards/outwards as these shots rise/decay. We report the results of AstroSat observations of Cygnus X-2 during February 2016. The source's power density spectrum generated using LAXPC data revealed the presence of a prominent Quasi-periodic Oscillation (QPO) at $\sim42$ Hz with broadband continuum noise at lower frequencies at $\sim10$ Hz. The large effective area of LAXPC at $\gtrsim$30 keV allowed for an unprecedented study of the energy dependence of the QPO and the broad noise continuum. The fractional r.m.s increases with energy, and its shape is similar for both the QPO and the continuum noise, suggesting a common radiative origin. However, while the QPO exhibits hard time lags, with the high energy photons lagging the low ones by a few milliseconds, the continuum noise shows the opposite behavior. The photon spectrum from SXT and LAXPC in $0.7-30$ keV band comprises the soft component from a disc and a hard Comptonized component from a hot corona. While the energy dependence of the r.m.s shows that the QPO and the continuum noise variability are dominated by the Comptonized component, the change in sign of the time-lag suggests that the dynamic origin of the QPO may be in the disk while the noise continuum may originate from the corona., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letter

We explore the long-term evolution of the spin period of the High Mass X-ray Binary (HMXB) pulsar Vela X-1 over a period of 46 yr. Our analysis indicates nearly periodic variations in the spin period of the pulsar on time-scales of about 5.9 yr. There is suggestion of an overall spin-down behaviour of the pulsar though it is noticed that the source appears to stay near its equilibrium period 283.4 s since MJD 51000, with rather erratic spin-up/spin-down episodes around this value. Our study suggests nearly cyclic turnover in the spin behaviour of the pulsar from spin-up to spin-down regimes on time-scales of about 17-19 yr. To our knowledge this is the first report of periodic variation in the spin behaviour of a wind-fed accreting pulsar. We also observe erratic episodes of spin-up and spin-down behaviour on relatively shorter time-scales which is a well known archetype of this wind-fed X-ray pulsar. We investigate whether nearly periodic long-term spin period changes in the pulsar can be explained by using known mechanisms of torque reversals in the accretion powered neutron stars. It appears that changes in the accretion environment of the pulsar using current ideas can probably lead to long-term spin period changes in this X-ray pulsar., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the far ultraviolet (FUV) imaging of the nearest Jellyfish or Fireball galaxy IC3418/VCC 1217, in the Virgo cluster of galaxies, using Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard the ASTROSAT satellite. The young star formation observed here in the 17 kpc long turbulent wake of IC3418, due to ram pressure stripping of cold gas surrounded by hot intra-cluster medium, is a unique laboratory that is unavailable in the Milkyway. We have tried to resolve star forming clumps, seen compact to GALEX UV images, using better resolution available with the UVIT and incorporated UV-optical images from Hubble Space Telescope archive. For the first time, we resolve the compact star forming clumps (fireballs) into sub-clumps and subsequently into a possibly dozen isolated stars. We speculate that many of them could be blue supergiant stars which are cousins of SDSS J122952.66+112227.8, the farthest star (~17 Mpc) we had found earlier surrounding one of these compact clumps. We found evidence of star formation rate (4 - 7.4 x 10^-4 M_sun per yr ) in these fireballs, estimated from UVIT flux densities, to be increasing with the distance from the parent galaxy. We propose a new dynamical model in which the stripped gas may be developing vortex street where the vortices grow to compact star forming clumps due to self-gravity. Gravity winning over turbulent force with time or length along the trail can explain the puzzling trend of higher star formation rate and bluer/younger stars observed in fireballs farther away from the parent galaxy., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures. We present the timing results of out-of-eclipse observations of Centaurus X-3 spanning half a binary orbit, performed on 12-13 December, 2016 with the Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) on-board AstroSat. The pulse profile was confirmed to exhibit a prominent pulse peak with a secondary inter-pulse. The systemic spin period of the pulsar was found to be $4.80188 \pm 0.000085$ s in agreement with its spin up trend. The spin up timescale seems to have increased to $7709 \pm 58$ yr that points to negative torque effects in the inner accretion disk. With its large effective area at hard X-rays, high time resolution and having co-aligned other instruments, AstroSat/LAXPC was designed to usher in a new era in rapid variability studies and wide spectral band measurements of the X-ray binaries. Over the last five years, the instrument has successfully achieved to a significant extent these Science goals. In the coming years, it is poised to make more important discoveries. An alternative scheme is described to estimate the layer 1 LAXPC 20 background for faint sources where the source contribution to the 50-80 keV count rate is less than 0.25 counts/sec (15 milli-crabs or $6 \times 10^{-11}$ ergs/s/cm$^2$). We consider 12 blank sky observations and based on their 50-80 keV count rate in 100 second time-bins, generate four template spectra which are then used to estimate the background spectrum and lightcurve for a given faint source observation. The variance of the estimated background subtracted spectra for the 12 blank sky observations is taken as the energy dependent systematic uncertainty which will dominate over the statistical one for exposures longer than 5 ksecs. The estimated 100 second time bin background lightcurve in the 4-20 keV band with a 3\% systematic error matches with the blank sky ones. The 4-20 keV spectrum can be constrained for a source with flux $\gtrapprox 1$ milli-crab. Fractional r.m.s variability of 10\% can be determined for a $\sim 5$ milli-crab source lightcurve binned at 100 seconds. The Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) instrument on-board AstroSat has three nominally identical detectors for timing and spectral studies in the energy range of 3--80 keV. The performance of these detectors during the five years after the launch of AstroSat is described. Currently, only one of the detector is working nominally. The variation in pressure, energy resolution, gain and background with time are discussed. The capabilities and limitations of the instrument are described. The origins of X-ray and radio emissions during an X-ray binary outburst are comparatively better understood than those of ultraviolet, optical and infrared radiation. This is because multiple competing mechanisms peak in these mid-energy ranges. Ascertaining the true emission mechanism and segregating the contribution of different mechanisms, if present, is important for correct understanding of the energetics of the system and hence its geometry. We have studied the multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution of the galactic X-ray binary GRS 1716-249 ranging from near infrared (0.0005 keV) to hard X-rays (120 keV) using observations from AstroSat, Swift, and Mount Abu Infrared Observatory. Broadband spectral fitting suggests that the irradiated accretion disk dominates emission in ultraviolet and optical regimes. The near infrared emission exhibits some excess than the prediction of the irradiated disk model, which is most likely due to Synchrotron emission from jets as suggested by radio emission. Irradiation of the inner disk by the hard X-ray emission from the Corona also plays a significant role in accounting for the soft X-ray emission., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures and 2 tables. Results on timing and spectral properties of the Be/X-ray binary pulsar 3A 0726-260 (4U 0728-25) are presented. The binary was observed on 2016 May 6-7 with the Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) and Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) instruments onboard the AstroSat satellite. During this observation the source was in non-flaring persistent state at a flux level of $\sim$ 8.6 $\pm$ 0.3 $\times$10$^{-11}$ ergs cm$^{-2}$ sec$^{-1}$ in 0.4-20 keV. Strong X-ray pulsations with a period of 103.144$\pm$0.001 seconds are detected in 0.3-7 keV with the SXT and in 3-40 keV with the LAXPC. The pulse profile is energy dependent, and there is an indication that the pulse shape changes from a broad single pulse to a double pulse at higher energy. At energies above 20 keV, we report the first time detection of pulsation period 103.145$\pm$0.001 seconds and the double peaked pulse profile from the source. The energy spectrum of the source is derived from the combined analysis of the SXT and LAXPC spectral data in 0.4-20 keV. The best spectral fit is obtained by a power law model with a photon index (1.7$\pm$0.03) with high energy spectral cut-off at 12.9 $\pm$ 0.7 keV. A broad Iron line at $\sim$ 6.3 keV is detected in the energy spectrum. We present the timing and spectral studies of RX J0209.6-7427 during its rare 2019 outburst using observations with the Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) and Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) instruments on the AstroSat satellite. Pulsations having a periodicity of 9.29 s were detected for the first time by the NICER mission in the 0.2-10 keV energy band and, as reported here, by AstroSat over a broad energy band covering 0.3-80 keV. The pulsar exhibits a rapid spin-up during the outburst. Energy resolved folded pulse profiles are generated in several energy bands in 3-80 keV. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report of the timing and spectral characteristics of this Be binary pulsar in hard X-rays. There is suggestion of evolution of the pulse profile with energy. The energy spectrum of the pulsar is determined and from the best fit spectral values, the X-ray luminosity of RX J0209.6-7427 is inferred to be ${1.6}\times 10^{39}$ ergs s$^{-1}$. Our timing and spectral studies suggest that this source has features of an ultraluminous X-ray pulsar in the Magellanic Bridge. Using data from the Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) on the \textit{AstroSat} satellite, we observed the Type-1 thermonuclear X-ray bursts from the Low Mass X-ray Binary Neutron Star 4U 1323-62. The observations of 4U 1323-62 were carried out during the performance verification phase of the \textit{AstroSat} satellite showed six thermonuclear X-ray bursts in a total effective exposure of $\sim$ 49.5 ks for about two consecutive days. Recurrence time of the detected thermonuclear bursts is in accordance with the orbital period of the source $\sim$ 9400 seconds. Moreover, the light curve of 4U 1323-62 revealed the presence of two dips. We presented the results from time-resolved spectroscopy performed during all of the six X-ray bursts and also report the detection of a known low frequency Quasi-periodic oscillation (LFQPO) at $\sim$ 1 Hz, from the source. However, any evidence of kilohertz QPO was not found. We have shown the burst profile at different energy ranges. Assuming a distance of 10 kpc, we observed a mean flux $\sim$ 1.8 $\times$ $10^{-9}$ erg $cm^2$ $s^{-1}$. The radius of the blackbody is found to be highly consistent with the blackbody temperature and the blackbody flux of the bursts.

We present a spectral and timing study of the High Mass X-ray Binary transient source 4U 1700-37 using NuSTAR and ASTROSAT/LAXPC. The source is observed in two different flux states. A combined spectral analysis of NuSTAR's FPMA and FPMB shows the possible hint of a cyclotron line feature at $\sim$16 keV. The line feature is consistently present in different continuum models with at least 3$\sigma$ confidence level. We do not detect the presence of a previously reported ~39 keV cyclotron line in the combined spectra. A $\sim$16 keV cyclotron feature would suggest that the compact object is a neutron star with a magnetic field strength $\sim2.1\times$10$^{12}$ Gauss in the emission region. We also find the presence of a rare Ni $K{\alpha}$ emission line around 7.6 keV in the NuSTAR spectrum. We searched the NuSTAR and ASTROSAT data for coherent or quasi-periodic oscillation signals but found no evidence in the frequency range 0.1 mHz to 10$^3$ Hz., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS journal

In this work, we present a spectral and temporal analysis of {\it Swift}/XRT and {\it NuSTAR} observations of GRS 1716--249 during its recent 2016--2017 outburst. This low mass X-ray binary underwent an extraordinary outburst after a long quiescence of 23 years, since its last major outburst in 1993. The source was observed over two different epochs during 2017 April, 07 and 10. The best fit joint spectral fitting in the energy range 0.5 $-$ 79.0 keV indicates that the spectrum is best described by relatively cold, weak disk blackbody emission, dominant thermal Comptonization emission, and a relativistically broadened fluorescent iron K$\alpha$ emission line. We observed a clear indication of a Compton hump around 30 keV. We also detected an excess feature of $\sim1.3$ keV. Assuming a lamp-post geometry of the corona, we constrained the inner disk radius for both observations to 11.92$^{+8.62}_{-11.92}$ R$_{ISCO}$ (i.e., an upper limit) and 10.39$^{+9.51}_{-3.02}$ R$_{ISCO}$ (where R$_{ISCO}\equiv$ radius of the innermost stable circular orbit) for the first epoch (E1) and second epoch (E2), respectively. A significant ($\sim5\sigma$) type$-$C quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) at $1.20\pm0.04$ Hz is detected for the first time for GRS 1716--249, which drifts to $1.55\pm0.04$ Hz ($\sim6\sigma$) at the end of the second observation. The derived spectral and temporal properties show a positive correlation between the QPO frequency and the photon index., Comment: Accepted for publication by MNRAS

The Be X-ray Binary 4U 0115+63 was observed by Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) instrument on AstroSat on 2015 October 24 during the peak of a giant Type II outburst. Prominent intensity oscillations at ~ 1 and ~ 2 mHz frequency were detected during the outburst. Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) observations made during the same outburst also show mHz quasi periodic oscillations (QPOs). Details of the oscillations and their characteristics deduced from LAXPC/AstroSat and NuSTAR observations are reported in this paper. Analysis of the archival Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE)/Proportional Counter Array (PCA) data during 2001-11 also show presence of mHz QPOs during some of the outbursts and details of these QPOs are also reported. Possible models to explain the origin of the mHz oscillations are examined. Similar QPOs, albeit at higher frequencies, have been reported from other neutron star and black hole sources and both may have a common origin. Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE)/Proportional Counter Array (PCA) observations of IGR J19294+1816 covering two outburst episodes are reported. The first outburst happened during MJD 54921-54925 (2009 C.E.) and the second one happened during MJD 55499-55507 (2010 C.E.). In both the cases the PCA observations were made during the decay phase of the outburst, with the source exhibiting temporal and spectral evolution with the change in flux. At the bright flux level an absorption feature at 35.5 keV is detected in the spectra which may be attributed to Cyclotron Resonance Scattering Feature corresponding to a magnetic field of B = 4.13*10^12 Gauss. This is also detected at a lower significance in two other observations. In addition an Fe line emission at 6.4 keV is prominently detected during the highest flux. X-ray pulsations are detected in 9 out of 10 observations; no pulsations were found in the observation with the lowest flux level. During this observation with the lowest flux the pulsation phenomenon becomes detectable only at the soft X-ray bands.

Large Area X-ray Propositional Counter (LAXPC) instrument on AstroSat is aimed at providing high time resolution X-ray observations in 3 to 80 keV energy band with moderate energy resolution. To achieve large collecting area, a cluster of three co-aligned identical LAXPC detectors, is used to realize an effective area in access of about 6000 cm2 at 15 keV. The large detection volume of the LAXPC detectors, filled with xenon gas at about 2 atmosphere pressure, results in detection efficiency greater than 50%, above 30 keV. In this article, we present salient features of the LAXPC detectors, their testing and characterization in the laboratory prior to launch and calibration in the orbit. Some preliminary results on timing and spectral characteristics of a few X-ray binaries and other type of sources, are briefly discussed to demonstrate that the LAXPC instrument is performing as planned in the orbit., Comment: 11 pages, 15 Figures, Accepted for publication in Journal of Astronomy and Astrophysics

We have used archival RXTE PCA data to investigate timing and spectral characteristics of the transient XTE J1817-330. The data pertains to 160 PCA pointed observations made during the outburst period 2006, January 27 to August 2. A detailed analysis of Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (QPOs) in this black hole X-ray binary is carried out. Power density spectra were obtained using the light curves of the source. QPOs have been detected in the 2-8 keV band in 10 of the observations. In 8 of these observations, QPOs are present in the 8-14 keV and in 5 observations in the 15-25 keV band. XTE J1817-330 is the third black hole source from which the low frequency QPOs are clearly detected in hard X-rays. The QPO frequency lies in ~ 4-9 Hz and the rms amplitude in 1.7-13.3% range, the amplitude being higher at higher energies. We have fitted the PDS of the observations with Lorentzian and power law models. Energy spectra are derived for those observations in which the QPOs are detected to investigate any dependence of the QPO characteristic on the spectral parameters. These spectra are well fitted with a two component model that includes the disk black body component and a power law component.
