5. Cross-System Communication in Early Childhood Settings in the United States: An Exploratory Study Using the National Survey of Children's Health

Abstract

Communication between a child's health care provider, child care and other community providers (cross-system communication) may facilitate access and referral to early intervention (EI). This study examined (a) factors associated with cross-system communication and (b) whether cross-system communication was associated with receiving EI among U.S. toddlers ages 1 to 2 years. This study used data from the National Survey of Children's Health 2016 and included 1,184 children of ages 1 to 2 years, whose parents indicated a need for cross-system communication. Dependent variable was having an EI plan. Primary independent variable was cross-system communication. Children who had cross-system communication had almost three times (2.9) higher odds of receiving EI services as compared to those who did not have cross-system communication (odds ratio [OR] = 2.9, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.2, 6.9, p = 0.014). This study found that cross-system communication was associated with receiving EI services for U.S. children of ages 1 to 2 years.

Abstract

The major drawbacks with Satellite Images are low resolution, Low resolution makes it difficult to identify the objects present in Satellite images. We have experimented with several deep models available for Single Image Superresolution on the SpaceNet dataset and have evaluated the performance of each of them on the satellite image data. We will dive into the recent evolution of the deep models in the context of SISR over the past few years and will present a comparative study between these models. The entire Satellite image of an area is divided into equal-sized patches. Each patch will be used independently for training. These patches will differ in nature. Say, for example, the patches over urban areas have non-homogeneous backgrounds because of different types of objects like vehicles, buildings, roads, etc. On the other hand, patches over jungles will be more homogeneous in nature. Hence, different deep models will fit on different kinds of patches. In this study, we will try to explore this further with the help of a Switching Convolution Network. The idea is to train a switch classifier that will automatically classify a patch into one category of models best suited for it.

15. The Link between Medicaid Expansion and School Absenteeism: Evidence from the Southern United States

Abstract

Background: Parental Medicaid eligibility has been shown to be linked to positive academic and school outcomes for children. However, the impact of adult Medicaid expansion on children's school absenteeism is largely unexplored in the literature. The aim of this study was to examine whether Medicaid expansion for adults under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), affected school absenteeism of children. Methods: This study used data from the National Survey of Children's Health 2016 to 2017 and the difference-in-differences method. Results: The decrease in the predicted probability of missing 11 or more school days in Louisiana, after Medicaid expansion, among school-going children from low-income families, was greater by 18 percentage points (p = 0.007), as compared to the decrease in the predicted probability of missing 11 or more school days in the neighboring nonexpansion states of Texas and Mississippi. Conclusions: The positive impacts of Medicaid expansion are not limited to adults, but also extend to children's school absenteeism.

Abstract

Keeping in mind the requirements of high rate capable, cost effective, large area detectors to be used in future high energy physics experiments, commercially available bakelite plates having moderate bulk resistivity are used to build an RPC module. The chamber is tested with cosmic rays in the avalanche mode using 100\% Tetrafluoroethane ($C_2H_2F_4$). Standard NIM electronics are used for this study. The efficiency, noise rate and time resolution are measured. Abstract

The goal of our work is to perform pixel label semantic segmentation on 3D biomedical volumetric data. Manual annotation is always difficult for a large bio-medical dataset. So, we consider two cases where one dataset is fully labeled and the other dataset is assumed to be fully unlabelled. We first perform Semantic Segmentation on the fully labeled isotropic biomedical source data (FIBSEM) and try to incorporate the the trained model for segmenting the target unlabelled dataset(SNEMI3D)which shares some similarities with the source dataset in the context of different types of cellular bodies and other cellular components. Although, the cellular components vary in size and shape. So in this paper, we have proposed a novel approach in the context of unsupervised domain adaptation while classifying each pixel of the target volumetric data into cell boundary and cell body. Also, we have proposed a novel approach to giving non-uniform weights to different pixels in the training images while performing the pixel-level semantic segmentation in the presence of the corresponding pixel-wise label map along with the training original images in the source domain. We have used the Entropy Map or a Distance Transform matrix retrieved from the given ground truth label map which has helped to overcome the class imbalance problem in the medical image data where the cell boundaries are extremely thin and hence, extremely prone to be misclassified as non-boundary., Comment: 6 pages and 6 figures. Abstract

This article proposes a milder approach for C(sp2=−H functionalization of 2,2‐disubstituted cyclopentene‐1,3‐dione via formal 1° amination utilizing water as a solvent. In addition, this approach also offers C(sp2)−O, C(sp2)−I bond formation for the first time using sodium azide. The said highly scalable transformation does not require any prefunctionalization of the starting material. Moreover, this methodology is metal free, requires no ligand and all these reactions are carried out in an open‐air atmosphere with broad substrate scope. 39. Impact of Industrial BOTS on Employment, Skilled–Unskilled Wage Disparities and Talent Gap

Abstract

This paper investigates the impacts of industrial robots (BOTs) on the employment of skilled and unskilled labour within the manufacturing sector. We employ an empirical approach to analyse the data and complement the empirical findings with a theoretical framework. The results suggest a negative impact of BOT adoption on the employment of low-skilled workers, while skilled workers experience minimal effects. Interestingly, the study also finds a reduction in the wage gap between skilled and unskilled labour. A General Equilibrium framework underpins the theoretical explanation for these empirical observations. The model highlights the presence of a talent gap within the low skilled labourers within the manufacturing sector despite the continued demand for low-skilled labour. This gap impedes employment growth for low-skilled workers, even as their wages potentially increase. Thus, increased robot utilization may lead to higher wages but lower employment of the low skilled labourers within the industrial sector. Additionally, the paper incorporates secondary evidence from anecdotal surveys to bolster the research conclusions.

48. Role of Artificial Intelligence in Intra-Sectoral Wage Inequality in an Open Economy: A Finite Change Approach

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to significantly impact the income of individuals. Cross-country data shows that introduction of AI is inequality enhancing in developing and less developed countries. In this paper, we attempt to understand the reason for increase in wage inequality across labourers due to introduction of AI, in a finite change General Equilibrium (GE) set up which allows for emergence of a new activity. AI-induced technological shock is introduced in the non-traded sector of an open economy with heterogeneous skills. We show how the advent of AI (which was initially non-existent) in the non-traded sector separates the skills of the once homogenous workers, thus, creating an intra-sectoral wage gap. What proportion of the low-skilled workers can move to the higher wage paying sector depends on an adaptability factor that acts as an eligibility criterion in fragmenting the erstwhile homogenous labourers and also works towards rising intra-group wage gap.
