The notion of double depth associated with quasi-Jacobi forms allows distinguishing, within the algebra of quasi-Jacobi singular forms of index zero, certain significant subalgebras (modular-type forms, elliptic-type forms, Jacobi forms). We study the stability of these subalgebras under the derivations of this algebra and through certain sequences of bidifferential operators constituting analogs of Rankin-Cohen brackets or transvectants

With a temperature of $\sim 285$ K WISE0855 is the coldest brown dwarf observed so far. Using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) we obtained observations that allow us to characterize WISE0855s atmosphere focusing on vertical variation in the water steam abundance, measuring trace gas abundances and receiving bulk parameters for this cold object. We observed the ultra cool dwarf WISE0855 using the Mid-Infrared Instrument Medium Resolution Spectrometer (MIRI/MRS) onboard JWST at a spectral resolution of up to 3750. We combined the observation with published data from the Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) G395M and PRISM modes yielding a spectrum ranging from 0.8 to 22 um. We apply atmospheric retrievals using petitRADTRANS to measure atmospheric abundances, the pressure-temperature structure, radius and gravity of the brown dwarf. We also employ publicly available clear and cloudy self-consistent grid models to estimate bulk properties of the atmosphere such as the effective temperature, radius, gravity and metallicity. Atmospheric retrievals constrain a variable water abundance profile in the atmosphere, as predicted by equilibrium chemistry. We detect the 15NH3 isotopologue and infer a ratio of mass fraction of 14NH3/15NH3 = 332+63-43 for the clear retrieval. We measure the bolometric luminosity by integrating the presented spectrum and obtain a value of log(L/L$_{\odot}$) = -7.291+/-0.008. The detected water depletion indicates that water condenses out in the upper atmosphere due to the very low effective temperature of WISE0855. The height in the atmosphere where this occurs is covered by the MIRI/MRS data, and thus demonstrates the potential of MIRI to characterize cold gas giants atmospheres. A local homeomorphism between open subsets of a locally compact Hausdorff space induces dynamical systems with a wide range of applications, including in C*-algebras. In this paper, we introduce the concepts of nonwandering and wandering sets for such systems and show that, under mild conditions, the metric entropy is concentrated in the nonwandering set. More generally, we demonstrate that the entropy of the system is the maximum of the entropies of the systems restricted to the nonwandering set and the closure of the wandering set. We introduce Moshi, a speech-text foundation model and full-duplex spoken dialogue framework. Current systems for spoken dialogue rely on pipelines of independent components, namely voice activity detection, speech recognition, textual dialogue and text-to-speech. Such frameworks cannot emulate the experience of real conversations. First, their complexity induces a latency of several seconds between interactions. Second, text being the intermediate modality for dialogue, non-linguistic information that modifies meaning -- such as emotion or non-speech sounds -- is lost in the interaction. Finally, they rely on a segmentation into speaker turns, which does not take into account overlapping speech, interruptions and interjections. Moshi solves these independent issues altogether by casting spoken dialogue as speech-to-speech generation. Starting from a text language model backbone, Moshi generates speech as tokens from the residual quantizer of a neural audio codec, while modeling separately its own speech and that of the user into parallel streams. This allows for the removal of explicit speaker turns, and the modeling of arbitrary conversational dynamics. We moreover extend the hierarchical semantic-to-acoustic token generation of previous work to first predict time-aligned text tokens as a prefix to audio tokens. Not only this "Inner Monologue" method significantly improves the linguistic quality of generated speech, but we also illustrate how it can provide streaming speech recognition and text-to-speech. Our resulting model is the first real-time full-duplex spoken large language model, with a theoretical latency of 160ms, 200ms in practice, and is available at https://github.com/kyutai-labs/moshi.

We consider the magnetic Dirac operator on a curved strip whose boundary carries the infinite mass boundary condition. When the magnetic field is large, we provide the reader with accurate estimates of the essential and discrete spectra. In particular, we give sufficient conditions ensuring that the discrete spectrum is non-empty.

Mid-infrared imaging of exoplanets and disks is now possible with the coronagraphs of the MIRI on the JWST. This wavelength range unveils new features of young directly imaged systems and allows us to obtain new constraints for characterizing the atmosphere of young giant exoplanets and associated disks. These observations aim to characterize the atmosphere of the planet HD 95086 b by adding mid-infrared information so that the various hypotheses about its atmospheric parameters values can be unraveled. Improved images of circumstellar disks are provided. We present the MIRI coronagraphic imaging of the system HD 95086 obtained with the F1065C, F1140, and F2300C filters at central wavelengths of 10.575, 11.3, and 23 microns, respectively. We explored the method for subtracting the stellar diffraction pattern in the particular case when bright dust emitting at short separation is present. Furthermore, we compared different methods for extracting the photometry of the planet. Using the atmospheric models Exo-REM and ATMO, we measured the atmospheric parameters of HD 95086 b. The planet HD 95086 b and the contribution from the inner disk are detected at the two shortest MIRI wavelengths F1065C and F1140C. The outer colder belt is imaged at 23 microns. The mid-infrared photometry provides better constraints on the atmospheric parameters. We evaluate a temperature of 850-1020 K, consistent with one previous hypothesis that only used NIR data. The radius measurement of 1.0-1.13 RJup is better aligned with evolutionary models, but still smaller than predicted. These observations allow us to refute the hypothesis of a warm circumplanetary disk. HD 95086 is one of the first exoplanetary systems to be revealed at mid-infrared wavelengths. Smectic liquid crystals can be viewed as model systems for lamellar structures for which there has been extensive theoretical development. We demonstrate that a nonlinear energy description is required with respect to the usual Landau-de Gennes elasticity in order to explain the observed layer spacing of highly curved smectic layers. Using X-ray diffraction we have quantitatively determined the dilation of bent layers distorted by antagonistic anchoring (as high as 1.8% of dilation for the most bent smectic layers) and accurately described it by the minimal nonlinear expression for energy. We observe a 1{\deg} tilt of planar layers that are connected to the curved layers. This value is consistent with simple energetic calculations, demonstrating how the bending energy impacts the overall structure of a thin distorted smectic film. Finally, we show that combined X-ray measurements and theoretical modeling allow for the quantitative determination of the number of curved smectic layers and of the resulting thickness of the dilated region with unprecedented precision., Comment: 6 pages with 6 figures

Realizing tunable functional materials with built-in nanoscale heat flow directionality represents a significant challenge with the potential to enable novel thermal management strategies. Here we use spatiotemporally-resolved thermoreflectance to visualize lateral thermal transport anisotropy in self-assembled supercrystals of anisotropic Au nanocrystals. Correlative electron and thermoreflectance microscopy reveal that heat predominantly flows along the long-axis of the anisotropic nanocrystals, and does so across grain boundaries and curved assemblies while voids disrupt heat flow. We finely control the anisotropy via the aspect ratio of constituent nanorods, and it exceeds the aspect ratio for nano-bipyramid supercrystals and certain nanorod arrangements. Finite element simulations and effective medium modeling rationalize the emergent anisotropic behavior in terms of a simple series resistance model, further providing a framework for estimating thermal anisotropy as a function of material and structural parameters. Self-assembly of colloidal nanocrystals promises a novel route to direct heat flow in a wide range of applications that utilize this important class of materials.

We present JWST/MIRI MRS spatially resolved $\sim 5-28\,\mu$m observations of the central ~4-8kpc of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy and broad absorption line quasar Mrk231. These are part of the Mid-Infrared Characterization of Nearby Iconic galaxy Centers (MICONIC) program of the MIRI European Consortium guaranteed time observations. No high excitation lines (i.e., [MgV] at 5.61$\mu$m or [NeV] at 14.32$\mu$m) typically associated with the presence of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) are detected in the nuclear region of Mrk231. This is likely due to the intrinsically X-ray weak nature of its quasar. Some intermediate ionization potential lines, for instance, [ArIII] at 8.99$\mu$m and [SIV] at 10.51$\mu$m, are not detected either, even though they are clearly observed in a star-forming region ~920pc south-east of the AGN. Thus, the strong nuclear mid-infrared (mid-IR) continuum is also in part hampering the detection of faint lines in the nuclear region. The nuclear [NeIII]/[NeII]line ratio is consistent with values observed in star-forming galaxies. Moreover, we resolve for the first time the nuclear starburst in the mid-IR low-excitation line emission (size of ~400pc, FWHM). Several pieces of evidence also indicate that it is partly obscured even at these wavelengths. At the AGN position, the ionized and warm molecular gas emission lines have modest widths (W_80~300km/s). There are, however, weak blueshifted wings reaching velocities v_02~-400km/s in [NeII]. The nuclear starburst is at the center of a large (~8kpc), massive rotating disk with widely-spread, low velocity outflows. Given the high star formation rate of Mrk231, we speculate that part of the nuclear outflows and the large-scale non-circular motions observed in the mid-IR are driven by its powerful nuclear starburst., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

This paper introduces new methodology based on the field of Topological Data Analysis for detecting anomalies in multivariate time series, that aims to detect global changes in the dependency structure between channels. The proposed approach is lean enough to handle large scale datasets, and extensive numerical experiments back the intuition that it is more suitable for detecting global changes of correlation structures than existing methods. Some theoretical guarantees for quantization algorithms based on dependent time sequences are also provided.

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

Spins and oscillators are foundational to much of physics and applied sciences. For quantum information, a spin 1/2 exemplifies the most basic unit, a qubit. High angular momentum spins (HAMSs) and harmonic oscillators provide multi-level manifolds (e.g., qudits) which have the potential for hardware-efficient protected encodings of quantum information and simulation of many-body quantum systems. In this work, we demonstrate a new quantum control protocol that conceptually merges these disparate hardware platforms. Namely, we show how to modify a harmonic oscillator on-demand to implement a continuous range of generators associated to resonant driving of a harmonic qudit, which we can interpret as accomplishing linear and nonlinear control over a harmonic HAMS degree of freedom. The spin-like dynamics are verified by demonstration of linear spin coherent (SU(2)) rotations, nonlinear spin control, and comparison to other manifolds like simply-truncated oscillators. Our scheme allows the first universal control of such a harmonic qudit encoding: we use linear operations to accomplish four logical gates, and further show that nonlinear harmonicity-preserving operations complete the logical gate set. Our results show how motion on a closed Hilbert space can be useful for quantum information processing and opens the door to superconducting circuit simulations of higher angular momentum quantum magnetism., Comment: Additional figures, updated text

A unique bistable transition has been identified in granular/colloidal gel-composites, resulting from shear-induced phase separation of the gel phase into dense blobs. In energy applications, it is critical to understand how this transition influences electrical performance. Mixing conductive colloids with conductive inclusions, we find the conductivity and elasticity move in concert, both decreasing in the collapsed phase-separated state. Surprisingly, with insulating inclusions these properties can become decoupled, with the conductivity instead increasing despite the collapse of the gel structure.

In this paper, we investigate unexplored aspects of scheduler contention: We systematically study the leakage of all scheduler queues on AMD Zen 3 and show that all queues leak. We mount the first scheduler contention attacks on Zen 4, with a novel measurement method evoking an out-of-order race condition, more precise than the state of the art. We demonstrate the first inter-keystroke timing attacks based on scheduler contention, with an F1 score of $\geq$ 99.5 % and a standard deviation below 4 ms from the ground truth. Vision-language pre-training for chest X-rays has made significant strides, primarily by utilizing paired radiographs and radiology reports. However, existing approaches often face challenges in encoding medical knowledge effectively. While radiology reports provide insights into the current disease manifestation, medical definitions (as used by contemporary methods) tend to be overly abstract, creating a gap in knowledge. To address this, we propose DeViDe, a novel transformer-based method that leverages radiographic descriptions from the open web. These descriptions outline general visual characteristics of diseases in radiographs, and when combined with abstract definitions and radiology reports, provide a holistic snapshot of knowledge. DeViDe incorporates three key features for knowledge-augmented vision language alignment: First, a large-language model-based augmentation is employed to homogenise medical knowledge from diverse sources. Second, this knowledge is aligned with image information at various levels of granularity. Third, a novel projection layer is proposed to handle the complexity of aligning each image with multiple descriptions arising in a multi-label setting. In zero-shot settings, DeViDe performs comparably to fully supervised models on external datasets and achieves state-of-the-art results on three large-scale datasets. We introduce the concept of "irrational paths" for a given subshift and use it to characterize all minimal left ideals in the associated unital subshift algebra. Consequently, we characterize the socle as the sum of the ideals generated by irrational paths. Proceeding, we construct a graph such that the Leavitt path algebra of this graph is graded isomorphic to the socle. This realization allows us to show that the graded structure of the socle serves as an invariant for the conjugacy of Ott-Tomforde-Willis subshifts and for the isometric conjugacy of subshifts constructed with the product topology. Additionally, we establish that the socle of the unital subshift algebra is contained in the socle of the corresponding unital subshift C*-algebra.

We present a JWST imaging survey of I Zw 18, the archetypal extremely metal-poor, star-forming (SF), blue compact dwarf galaxy. With an oxygen abundance of only $\sim$3% $Z_{\odot}$, it is among the lowest-metallicity systems known in the local Universe, and is, therefore, an excellent accessible analog for the galactic building blocks which existed at early epochs of ionization and star formation. These JWST data provide a comprehensive infrared (IR) view of I Zw 18 with eight filters utilizing both Near Infrared Camera (F115W, F200W, F356W, and F444W) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (F770W, F1000W, F1500W, and F1800W) photometry, which we have used to identify key stellar populations that are bright in the near- and mid-IR. These data allow for a better understanding of the origins of dust and dust-production mechanisms in metal-poor environments by characterizing the population of massive, evolved stars in the red supergiant (RSG) and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phases. In addition, it enables the identification of the brightest dust-enshrouded young stellar objects (YSOs), which provide insight into the formation of massive stars at extremely low metallicities typical of the very early Universe. This paper provides an overview of the observational strategy and data processing, and presents first science results, including identifications of dusty AGB, RSG, and bright YSO candidates. Optimizing a function without using derivatives is a challenging paradigm, that precludes from using classical algorithms from nonlinear optimization and may thus seem intractable other than by using heuristics. However, the field of derivative-free optimization has succeeded in producing algorithms that do not rely on derivatives and yet are endowed with convergence guarantees. One class of such methods, called direct search, is particularly popular thanks to its simplicity of implementation, even though its theoretical underpinnings are not always easy to grasp. In this work, we survey contemporary direct-search algorithms from a theoretical viewpoint, with the aim of highlighting the key theoretical features of these methods. Our study goes beyond the classical, textbook cases and tackles the presence of nonsmoothness, noise, and constraints in the problem at hand. In addition to reviewing classical results in the field, we provide new perspectives on existing results, as well as novel proofs that illustrate the versatility of direct-search schemes.

Over the past decades, libraries of stellar spectra have been used in a large variety of science cases, including as sources of reference spectra for a given object or a given spectral type. Despite the existence of large libraries and the increasing number of projects of large-scale spectral surveys, there is to date only one very high-resolution spectral library offering spectra from a few hundred objects from the southern hemisphere (UVES-POP) . We aim to extend the sample, offering a finer coverage of effective temperatures and surface gravity with a uniform collection of spectra obtained in the northern hemisphere. Between 2010 and 2020, we acquired several thousand echelle spectra of bright stars with the Mercator-HERMES spectrograph located in the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory in La Palma, whose pipeline offers high-quality data reduction products. We have also developed methods to correct for the instrumental response in order to approach the true shape of the spectral continuum. Additionally, we have devised a normalisation process to provide a homogeneous normalisation of the full spectral range for most of the objects. We present a new spectral library consisting of 3256 spectra covering 2043 stars. It combines high signal-to-noise and high spectral resolution over the entire range of effective temperatures and luminosity classes. Jointly learning multiple tasks with a unified model can improve accuracy and data efficiency, but it faces the challenge of task interference, where optimizing one task objective may inadvertently compromise the performance of another. A solution to mitigate this issue is to allocate task-specific parameters, free from interference, on top of shared features. However, manually designing such architectures is cumbersome, as practitioners need to balance between the overall performance across all tasks and the higher computational cost induced by the newly added parameters. In this work, we propose \textit{InterroGate}, a novel multi-task learning (MTL) architecture designed to mitigate task interference while optimizing inference computational efficiency. We employ a learnable gating mechanism to automatically balance the shared and task-specific representations while preserving the performance of all tasks. Crucially, the patterns of parameter sharing and specialization dynamically learned during training, become fixed at inference, resulting in a static, optimized MTL architecture. Through extensive empirical evaluations, we demonstrate SoTA results on three MTL benchmarks using convolutional as well as transformer-based backbones on CelebA, NYUD-v2, and PASCAL-Context., Comment: Under review

Large language models (LLMs) have become ubiquitous in practice and are widely used for generation tasks such as translation, summarization and instruction following. However, their enormous size and reliance on autoregressive decoding increase deployment costs and complicate their use in latency-critical applications. In this work, we propose a hybrid approach that combines language models of different sizes to increase the efficiency of autoregressive decoding while maintaining high performance. Our method utilizes a pretrained frozen LLM that encodes all prompt tokens once in parallel, and uses the resulting representations to condition and guide a small language model (SLM), which then generates the response more efficiently. We investigate the combination of encoder-decoder LLMs with both encoder-decoder and decoder-only SLMs from different model families and only require fine-tuning of the SLM. Experiments with various benchmarks show substantial speedups of up to $4\times$, with minor performance penalties of $1-2\%$ for translation and summarization tasks compared to the LLM., Comment: Work presented at the ES-FoMo II Workshop at ICML 2024

Multimodal neuroimaging grants a powerful in vivo window into the structure and function of the human brain. Recent methodological and conceptual advances have enabled investigations of the interplay between large-scale spatial trends, or gradients, in brain structure and function, offering a framework to unify principles of brain organization across multiple scales. Strong community enthusiasm for these techniques has been instrumental in their widespread adoption and implementation to answer key questions in neuroscience. Following a brief review of current literature on this framework, this perspective paper will highlight how pragmatic steps aiming to make gradient methods more accessible to the community propelled these techniques to the forefront of neuroscientific inquiry. More specifically, we will emphasize how interest for gradient methods was catalyzed by data sharing, open-source software development, as well as the organization of dedicated workshops led by a diverse team of early career researchers. To this end, we argue that the growing excitement for brain gradients is the result of coordinated and consistent efforts to build an inclusive community and can serve as a case in point for future innovations and conceptual advances in neuroinformatics. We close this perspective paper by discussing challenges for the continuous refinement of neuroscientific theory, methodological innovation, and real-world translation to maintain our collective progress towards integrated models of brain organization.

A promising route towards fault-tolerant quantum error correction is the concatenation of a Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) code with a qubit code. Development of such concatenated codes requires simulation tools which realistically model noise, while being able to simulate the dynamics of many modes. However, so far, large-scale simulation tools for concatenated GKP codes have been limited to idealized noise models and GKP code implementations. Here, we introduce the Bosonic Pauli+ model (BP+), which can be simulated efficiently for a large number of modes, while capturing the rich dynamics in the bosonic multi-mode Hilbert space. We demonstrate the method by simulating a hybrid surface code, where the data qubits are finite-energy GKP qubits stabilized using the small-Big-small (sBs) protocol, and the syndrome qubits are standard two-level systems. Using BP+, we present logical error rates of such an implementation. Confidence in the accuracy of the method is gained by comparing its predictions with full time evolution simulations for several relevant quantum circuits. We introduce MultiMedEval, an open-source toolkit for fair and reproducible evaluation of large, medical vision-language models (VLM). MultiMedEval comprehensively assesses the models' performance on a broad array of six multi-modal tasks, conducted over 23 datasets, and spanning over 11 medical domains. The chosen tasks and performance metrics are based on their widespread adoption in the community and their diversity, ensuring a thorough evaluation of the model's overall generalizability. We open-source a Python toolkit (github.com/corentin-ryr/MultiMedEval) with a simple interface and setup process, enabling the evaluation of any VLM in just a few lines of code. The difficulty of minimizing a nonconvex function is in part explained by the presence of saddle points. This slows down optimization algorithms and impacts worst-case complexity guarantees. However, many nonconvex problems of interest possess a favorable structure for optimization, in the sense that saddle points can be escaped efficiently by appropriate algorithms. This strict saddle property has been extensively used in data science to derive good properties for first-order algorithms, such as convergence to second-order critical points. However, the analysis and the design of second-order algorithms in the strict saddle setting have received significantly less attention. In this paper, we consider second-order trust-region methods for a class of strict saddle functions defined on Riemannian manifolds. These functions exhibit (geodesic) strong convexity around minimizers and negative curvature at saddle points. We show that the standard trust-region method with exact subproblem minimization finds an approximate local minimizer in a number of iterations that depends logarithmically on the accuracy parameter, which significantly improves known results for general nonconvex optimization. We also propose an inexact variant of the algorithm that explicitly leverages the strict saddle property to compute the most appropriate step at every iteration. Our bounds for the inexact variant also improve over the general nonconvex case, and illustrate the benefit of using strict saddle properties within optimization algorithms. Cement is an essential construction material due to its ability to flow before later setting, however the rheological properties must be tightly controlled. Despite this, much understanding remains empirical. Using a combination of continuous and oscillatory shear flow, we compare fresh Portland cement suspensions to previous measurements on model non-Brownian suspensions to gain a micro-physical understanding. Comparing steady and small-amplitude oscillatory shear, we reveal two distinct jamming concentrations, $\phi_{\mu}$ and $\phi_{\rm rcp}$, where the respective yield stresses diverge. As in model suspensions, the steady-shear jamming point is notably below the oscillatory jamming point, $\phi_{\mu} < \phi_{\rm rcp}$, suggesting that it is tied to frictional particle contacts. These results indicate that recently established models for the rheology of frictional, adhesive non-Brownian suspensions can be applied to fresh cement pastes, offering a new framework to understand the role of additives and fillers. Homo- and heterodyne detection are fundamental techniques for measuring propagating electromagnetic fields. However, applying these techniques to stationary fields confined in cavities poses a challenge. As a way to overcome this challenge, we propose to use repeated indirect measurements of a two-level system interacting with the cavity. We demonstrate numerically that the proposed measurement scheme faithfully reproduces measurement statistics of homo- or heterodyne detection at the single-shot level. The scheme can be implemented in various physical architectures, including circuit quantum electrodynamics. Our results pave the way to the implementation of quantum algorithms requiring linear detection, including quantum verification protocols, in stationary modes.

WASP-107b is a warm ($\sim$740 K) transiting planet with a Neptune-like mass of $\sim$30.5 $M_{\oplus}$ and Jupiter-like radius of $\sim$0.94 $R_{\rm J}$, whose extended atmosphere is eroding. Previous observations showed evidence for water vapour and a thick high-altitude condensate layer in WASP-107b's atmosphere. Recently, photochemically produced sulphur dioxide (SO$_2$) was detected in the atmosphere of a hot ($\sim$1,200 K) Saturn-mass planet from transmission spectroscopy near 4.05 $\mu$m, but for temperatures below $\sim$1,000 K sulphur is predicted to preferably form sulphur allotropes instead of SO$_2$. Here we report the 9$\sigma$-detection of two fundamental vibration bands of SO$_2$, at 7.35 $\mu$m and 8.69 $\mu$m, in the transmission spectrum of WASP-107b using the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) of the JWST. This discovery establishes WASP-107b as the second irradiated exoplanet with confirmed photochemistry, extending the temperature range of exoplanets exhibiting detected photochemistry from $\sim$1,200 K down to $\sim$740 K. Additionally, our spectral analysis reveals the presence of silicate clouds, which are strongly favoured ($\sim$7$\sigma$) over simpler cloud setups. Furthermore, water is detected ($\sim$12$\sigma$), but methane is not. These findings provide evidence of disequilibrium chemistry and indicate a dynamically active atmosphere with a super-solar metallicity.

Brown dwarfs serve as ideal laboratories for studying the atmospheres of giant exoplanets on wide orbits as the governing physical and chemical processes in them are nearly identical. Understanding the formation of gas giant planets is challenging, often involving the endeavour to link atmospheric abundance ratios, such as the carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) ratio, to formation scenarios. However, the complexity of planet formation requires additional tracers, as the unambiguous interpretation of the measured C/O ratio is fraught with complexity. Isotope ratios, such as deuterium-to-hydrogen and 14N/15N, offer a promising avenue to gain further insight into this formation process, mirroring their utility within the solar system. For exoplanets only a handful of constraints on 12C/13C exist, pointing to the accretion of 13C-rich ice from beyond the disks' CO iceline. Here we report on the mid-infrared detection of the 14NH3 and 15NH3 isotopologues in the atmosphere of a cool brown dwarf with an effective temperature of 380 K in a spectrum taken with the Mid-InfraRed Instrument of the James Webb Space Telescope. As expected, our results reveal a 14N/15N value consistent with star-like formation by gravitational collapse, demonstrating that this ratio can be accurately constrained. The ability to manipulate rheological and electrical properties of colloidal carbon black gels makes them attractive in composites for energy applications such as batteries and fuel cells, where they conduct electricity and prevent sedimentation of `granular' active components. While it is commonly assumed that granular fillers have a simple additive effect on the composite properties, new phenomena can emerge unexpectedly, with some composites exhibiting a unique rheological bi-stability between solid-like and liquid-like states. Here we report such bi-stability in suspensions of non-Brownian graphite and colloidal carbon black in oil, a model system to mimic composite suspensions for energy applications. Steady shear below a critical stress elicits a transition to a persistent mechanically weak and poorly conducting state, which must be `rejuvenated' using high-stress shear to recover a stronger, high-conductivity state. Our findings highlight the highly tunable nature of binary granular/gel composite suspensions, and present new possibilities for optimizing mixing and processing conditions for Li-ion battery slurries.

We present Herschel PACS spectroscopy of the [O III] 88.4um fine-structure line in the nearby WC8+O binary system gamma Vel to determine its oxygen abundance. The critical density of this line corresponds to several 10^5 R* such that it is spatially extended in PACS observations at the 336 pc distance to gamma Vel. Two approaches are used, the first involving a detailed stellar atmosphere analysis of gamma Vel using CMFGEN, extending to Ne ~ 10^0 cm^-3 in order to fully sample the line formation region of [O III] 88.4um. The second approach involves the analytical model introduced by Barlow et al. and revised by Dessart et al, additionally exploiting ISO LWS spectroscopy of [O III] 51.8um. We obtain higher luminosities for the WR and O components of gamma Vel with respect to De Marco et al, log L/L_sun = 5.31 and 5.56, respectively, due to the revised (higher) interferometric distance. We obtain an oxygen mass fraction of X_O = 1.0+/- 0.3% for an outer wind volume filling factor of f = 0.5+/-0.25, favouring either standard or slightly reduced Kunz et al. rates for the ^12C(alpha, gamma)^16O reaction from comparison with BPASS binary population synthesis models. We also revisit neon and sulphur abundances in the outer wind of gamma Vel from ISO SWS spectroscopy of [S IV] 10.5um [Ne II] 12.8um and [Ne III] 15.5um.
