The passenger pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius) was once the most abundant bird species in North America. Flocks of these birds witnessed in the early 19th century were so vast that they were said to darken the sky for days as they passed. Early syntheses of passenger pigeon remains in archaeological contexts in the eastern United States, in contrast, found them to be relatively rare in relation to other fowl, leading to the suggestion that the colonial‐era hyper‐abundance of passenger pigeons was a post‐European‐contact phenomenon resulting from contact‐induced demographic and ecological changes. In this paper, we provide new insights into passenger pigeon historical ecology through a synthesis and GIS‐based analysis of zooarchaeological data on skeletal remains from 157 Late Woodland (ca. 900–1650 CE) sites in Ontario, Canada. Our results reveal that passenger pigeon bones are common, and often abundant, in Late Woodland archaeological assemblages in Ontario, which speaks to the species' importance to Indigenous peoples in the region. However, the relative abundance of passenger pigeon remains varies over time, suggesting longer‐term trends in their availability and/or in hunting patterns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Suckers (Catostomidae Cope, 1871) are a diverse family of freshwater fishes native to North America and East Asia. Ethnographic data indicate suckers were harvested by Indigenous peoples throughout the region and frequently of comparable importance to salmon. Suckers were taken at various times of the year through angling, netting, spearing, and other methods. Once harvested, they were, depending on local tastes and customs, consumed fresh and/ or dried. As evidenced by the existence of First Sucker Ceremonies, the taxon's presence in myths, and descriptions of suckers as being a source of spiritual powers, catostomids were also spiritually important to some Indigenous peoples. The variability in the dietary and spiritual importance, capture, and preparation of suckers that is evident in the ethnographic record underscores the dynamism of human-sucker interactions in northwestern North America. Marine mammals often exhibit significant sexual segregation in their diet and habitat use but these differences have not been studied systematically in historic or ancient populations due to the difficulties associated with determining the sex of skeletal elements based on gross morphology. Using a combined ancient DNA and stable isotope approach, we document a sexual difference in the foraging ecology of late 19th century beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) from the Canadian High Arctic. Using two PCR assays that coamplify fragments of the Y‐linked SRY and X‐linked ZFX genes, we assigned reproducible sex identities to 35 beluga specimens. This provided a basis for investigating sex‐specific differences in foraging ecology using stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analyses of bone collagen. These isotopic data demonstrate that although both males and females primarily consumed Arctic cod, males utilized a wider range of prey than females, feeding on high trophic level benthic prey (sculpins) to a greater extent. Because bone collagen integrates prey isotopic compositions over the course of several years these sex‐based differences in beluga bone collagen isotopic compositions reflect long‐term and sustained sexual differences in foraging.
