13. Thyroid-Disrupting Effects of Cadmium and Mercury in Zebrafish Embryos/Larvae.

Abstract

Cadmium (Cd2+) and mercury (Hg2+) are two kinds of non-essential heavy metals. Cd2+ and Hg2+ can cause thyroid disruption, but very few researchers have investigated the thyroid-disrupting effects of these metals on fish, specifically during their early developmental transition stage from embryos to larvae. In this study, wild-type zebrafish embryos were exposed to varying concentrations (contents) of Cd2+ (0, 10, 100, and 1000 μg/L) and Hg2+ (0, 0.1, 1, and 10 μg/L) for 120 h. Thereafter, the thyroid hormone contents and transcriptional changes in the genes, including thyroid stimulating hormone-β (tshβ), thyroglobulin (tg), sodium-iodide symporter (nis), thyroid peroxidase (tpo), transthyretin (ttr), thyroid hormone receptor-α and -β (thrα, thrβ), types I and II iodothyronine deiodinase (dio1, dio2), and uridine diphosphate glucuronosyltransferase 1 family a, b (ugt1ab) associated with the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis were measured. Results showed that zebrafish embryos/larvae malformation rates were significantly higher in the Cd2+ and Hg2+ groups. A significant increase in the thyroxine (T4) concentration and a decrease in the triiodothyronine (T3) concentration were observed in the Cd2+-exposed zebrafish embryos/larvae. On the other hand, the T4 and T3 concentrations were observed to be significantly increased after Hg2+ exposure. Additionally, changes were noted in the expression patterns of the HPT axis-linked genes after Cd2+ and Hg2+ exposure. Based on the results of the principal component analysis (PCA), it was concluded that Cd2+ exposure significantly affected the thyroid endocrine system at a concentration of 100 μg/L, whereas Hg2+ exposure led to a thyroid disruption at a low concentration of 0.1 μg/L. Thus, this study demonstrated that exposure to Cd2+ and Hg2+ metal ions induced developmental toxicity and led to thyroid disruption in zebrafish embryos/larvae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

14. River damming affects energy flow and food web structure: a case study from a subtropical large river

Abstract

The river discontinuity caused by damming can modify both the availability of production sources and the energy flow in riverine food webs. We hypothesized the carbon source support food web would vary among the reaches in response to changing in hydrogeomorphic conditions, and this variability further caused food web structure changes. To test our hypothesis, three different river reaches in the lower Jinsha River, China, were selected and the stable isotope ratios of basal sources and dominant consumers were analyzed in three seasons 2015. The relative importance of basal sources showed temporal and spatial difference to varying degrees. Seston were the most important carbon sources in supporting all consumers and the contributions increased from upstream to downstream. Riparian C3 plants played an important supplementary role in both reaches above the dam or only in the high flow period. Dam-induced flow alteration changed the trophic basis and the composition of food webs, resulting in a difference in the food web structures, and widening but with lowest complexity food web occurred in the downstream reach. The results further confirm that the differences in the hydrogeomorphologic conditions caused by dam construction can exert potential influence on riverine food web structures.

20. Diversity of fish species and its spatio-temporal variations in Lake Dongting, a large Yangtze-connected lake

Abstract

To evaluate the fish diversity of Yangtze River-connected lakes, a monthly survey offish assemblage was carried out in the Lake Dongting in the middle basin of the Yangtze River in March-December, 2004 and May, 2005. Three sampling areas along a transect from the Yangtze River mainstream to the lake center, i.e. from lake mouth (Chenglinji) to East Lake Dongting (Yueyang) and South Lake Dongting (Yuanjiang) were selected. Totally 69 fish species belonging to 6 orders, 14 families and 44 genera were recorded. Cyprinids were the richest, accounting for 59.4% of total fish species. Species numbers and diversity indices showed that fish diversity of the lake was high, with great spatial and temporal variations. Generally, higher diversities occurred in spring and summer than in autumn and winter, and in South Lake Dongting than in the other areas. With regard to species numbers, the smaller the distance between sampling area and Yangtze River mainstream was, the earlier the diversity peak was reached. Dominant species were determined as species with the value of dominance over 5000. There were 17 dominant species in the lake among which 80.0% were limnicolous species. With regard to ecological groups, limnicolous species dominated the lake, accounting for 74.0% of the total species, while river-lake migratory species was the least, being 13.0% of the total. In comparison with that of 1970s, fish diversity of Lake Dongting had been dramatically decreased, especially for migratory species, and it was mainly due to the loss of habitats, decreased fry resource and over-fishing. Analysis also showed that fish diversities in Yangtze River-connected lakes were much higher than those of disconnected lakes, indicating that river-lake isolation results in species decreasing. Thus, increasing river-lake connectivities is important to the conservation of fish diversity in the Yangtze River floodplain.
