9. Ambient aging effects on the effective energy gap of ZnO thin films.

Abstract

Using photoconductance spectroscopy, we have studied the influence of different types of thermal annealing on epitaxial ZnO thin films where band bending effects play a major role. Once the film is exposed to ambient air conditions after a simple thermal annealing in oxygen at 600 ° C , the effective energy gap is stable with a value of ≃ 3.15 eV, while after a corresponding annealing in vacuum and subsequent air exposure, it starts at ≃ 3.24 eV, and then it evolves along the days until it reaches the bulk energy gap value of ZnO. By means of valence band x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), we have confirmed that these phenomena are related via the Franz–Keldysh effect to a downward band bending in the former case and a time dependent upward band bending in the latter one that slowly tends to a flat band condition, tracking the behavior observed in the effective energy gap. Core level XPS measurements suggest that for each type of thermal annealing, a different adsorption kinetics of water and hydrogen take place. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Stimuli-responsive biomaterials have attracted significant attention for the construction of on-demand drug release systems. The possibility of using external stimulation to trigger drug release is particularly enticing for hydrophobic compounds, which are not easily released by simple diffusion. In this work, an electrochemically active hydrogel, which has been prepared by gelling a mixture of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) and alginate (Alg), has been loaded with curcumin (CUR), a hydrophobic drug with a wide spectrum of clinical applications. The PEDOT/Alg hydrogel is electrochemically active and organizes as segregated PEDOT- and Alg-rich domains, explaining its behavior as an electroresponsive drug delivery system. When loaded with CUR, the hydrogel demonstrates a controlled drug release upon application of a negative electrical voltage. Comparison with the release profiles obtained applying a positive voltage and in the absence of electrical stimuli indicates that the release mechanism dominating this system is complex because of not only the intermolecular interactions between the drug and the polymeric network but also the loading of a hydrophobic drug in a water-containing delivery system.

Abstract

In this work we present a complete characterization and magnetic study of vanadium oxide/hexadecylamine nanotubes (VOx/Hexa NT's) doped with Co2+ and Ni2+ ions. The morphology of the NT's has been characterized by transmission electron microscopy, while the metallic elements have been quantified by the instrumental neutron activation analysis technique. The static and dynamic magnetic properties were studied by collecting data of magnetization as a function of magnetic field and temperature and by electron paramagnetic resonance. At difference of the majority reports in the literature, we do not observe magnetic dimers in vanadium oxide nanotubes. Also, we observed that the incorporation of metallic ions (Co2+, S = 3/2 and Ni2+, S = 1) decreases notably the amount of V4+ ions in the system, from 14-16% (nondoped case) to 2%-4%, with respect to the total vanadium atoms (fact corroborated by XPS experiments) anyway preserving the tubular nanostructure. The method to decrease the amount of V4+ in the nanotubes improves considerably their potential technological applications as Li-ion batteries cathodes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Durante la recombinación bimolecular de portadores fotogenerados en silicio poroso nanoestructurado, la energía puede relajar en forma no radiativa a través de fluctuaciones de alta energía y corta vida (SLEFs) que provocan movimiento de átomos de hidrógeno presentes en la superficie de los poros, pudiendo incluso exodifundir. Durante estas fluctuaciones se producen además enlaces colgantes que generan estados de defecto, atenuando la luminiscencia del material. La creación de enlaces olgantes, el decaimiento de la fotoluminiscencia y catodoluminiscencia, y la exodifusión de hidrógeno responden a la misma cinética determinada por la existencia de SLEFs. Se muestra que la cinética de foto-oxidación del silicio poroso preparado bajo condiciones de iluminación intensa puede explicarse con un modelo que contempla como factor limitante al cubrimiento superficial con hidrógeno, controlado por SLEFs During bimolecular recombination of photogenerated chariers, non radiative energy relaxation can occur in nanostructured porous silicon, through short lived-high energy fluctuations (SLEFs). During these fluctuations, hydrogen atoms present in the pore walls are moved, and hydrogen exodiffusion can also occur. Dangling bonds are also created producing defect states in the gap, which attenuates the porous silicon luminescence. The dangling bond creation, photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence dacay and hdrogen exodifussion show the same kinetics, which is determined by SLEFs existence. Abstract

Here we study the adsorption of S on the (111) Surface of the noble metals Au and Ag using XPS, AES, LEED and TOF-DRS. Despite the similarities of the two surfaces, all the techniques showed different behaviours in both surfaces from the beginning of the adsorption. XPS and AES were used to determine the dependence of the S coverage with dosing time, whereas LEED allowed us to identify the ordered phases of the S/Au and S/Ag systems. The S coverage in Ag grows continuously with dose, while for Au there is saturation of the S signals in q ~ 0.5ML. Analysis of the intensity and shape of the TOF-DRS signals provide evidence about the coexistence of Ag atoms with S atoms in the top most layer for all coverages, whereas in Au these effects can be discarded up to q ~ 0.3ML. Abstract

We report a comparative study of 4,4′-biphenyldithiol adlayers grown on Au(111) substrates in solution phase by different methods. Layers prepared by immersion in solutions of ethanol and n-hexane, with and without the use of a disulfide reducing agent (tris-carboxyethyl phosphine, TCEP),were characterized by electroreductive desorption, impedance spectroscopy, redox activity, high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy, and surfaceenhanced Raman spectroscopy. It is shown that the simple immersion in an ethanolic solution leads to the formation of, at least, a bilayerwith a high number of S\S bonds. The use of n-hexane as solvent produces a drastic reduction of these undesired bonds, and a similar result is obtained if the substrates prepared in the ethanolic solution are then washed with TCEP. The best results were obtained when the reducing agent was added into the ethanol solution, in which case all the characterizations were coincident in the formation of a single layer of standing-up molecules free of S\S bonds. The charge of the desorption peak and the relative intensity of the S2p and Au4f photoemission peaks both indicate a surface coverage θ≈0.2. In the case ofmultilayers formed by immersion in pure ethanolic solutions, the Raman experiments indicate that intralayer S\S bonds are not formed, and hence that all the S\S bonds are of the interlayer type. Abstract

En este trabajo se estudia la adsorción de S sobre la superficie (111) de los metales nobles Au y Ag mediante las técnicas XPS, AES, LEED y TOF-DRS. A pesar de las similitudes de las superficies, todas las técnicas revelan comportamientos diferentes desde el comienzo mismo de la adsorción. XPS y AES se utilizan para determinar la dependencia del recubrimiento de S con el tiempo de dosis, mientras que los patrones LEED permiten identificar las estructuras ordenadas de los sistemas S/Au y S/Ag. En Ag el recubrimiento de S crece indefinidamente con la dosis, mientras que para Au se observa saturación de las señales de S en θ ~ 0.5 MC. Abstract

Se estudió el crecimiento de películas epitaxiales ultra-delgadas de fluoruro de aluminio en Cu(100) mediante una combinación de técnicas experimentales de física de superficies. La deposición a temperatura ambiente resulta en la decoración de escalones seguida por la formación de islas dendríticas bidimensionales que coalescen para formar películas porosas. Las películas ultra-delgadas (de hasta dos monocapas de espesor) resultan morfológicamente inestables al calentar; parte de la película deja de mojar la superficie del sustrato a alrededor de 430 K con la formación de islas tridimensionales y dejando expuesta un área extensa de la superficie de Cu. En cambio, películas de varios nanómetros de espesor son estables hasta temperaturas cercanas a los 730 K cuando ocurre la desorción molecular. El efecto de la irradiación electrónica también ha sido caracterizado mediante diferentes técnicas espectroscópicas; encontrando que incluso dosis de irradiación reducidas de electrones pueden producir una descomposición significativa del fluoruro de aluminio, resultando en la liberación de moléculas de flúor y la formación de aluminio metálico. Estas características hacen del fluoruro de aluminio un material interesante para aplicaciones en espintrónica The growth of ultrathin epitaxial layers of aluminium fluoride on Cu(100) has been studied by a combination of surface science techniques. Deposition at room temperature results in step decoration followed by the formation of dendritic two-dimensional islands that coalesce to form porous films. Ultrathin layers (up to 2 monolayers in thickness) are morphologically unstable upon annealing; de-wetting takes place around 430 K with the formation of three-dimensional islands and leaving a large fraction of the Cu surface uncovered. Films several nanometers thick, on the contrary, are stable up to ca. 730 K where desorption in molecular form sets on. The effect of electron irradiation on the AlF3 has also been characterized by different spectroscopic techniques; we find that even small irradiation doses can provoke significant decomposition of the aluminium fluoride, resulting in the release of molecular fluorine and the formation of deposits of metallic aluminium.
