In this study, combined DFT, SCAPS-1D, and wxAMPS frameworks are used to investigate the optimized designs of Cs2BiAgI6 double perovskite-based solar cells. The first-principle calculation is employed to investigate the structural stability, optical responses, and electronic contribution of the constituent elements in Cs2BiAgI6 absorber material, where SCAPS-1D and wxAMPS simulators are used to scrutinize different configurations of Cs2BiAgI6 solar cells. Here, PCBM, ZnO, TiO2, C60, IGZO, SnO2, WS2, and CeO2 are used as ETL, and Cu2O, CuSCN, CuSbS2, NiO, P3HT, PEDOT: PSS, Spiro-MeOTAD, CuI, CuO, V2O5, CBTS, CFTS are used as HTL, and Au is used as a back contact. About ninety-six combinations of Cs2BiAgI6-based solar cell structures are investigated, in which eight sets of solar cell structures are identified as the most efficient structures. Besides, holistic investigation on the effect of different factors such as the thickness of different layers, series and shunt resistances, temperature, capacitance, Mott-Schottky and generation-recombination rates, and J-V (current-voltage density) and QE (quantum efficiency) characteristics is performed. The results show CBTS as the best HTL for Cs2BiAgI6 with all eight ETLs used in this work, resulting in a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.99%, 21.55%, 21.59%, 17.47%, 20.42%, 21.52%, 14.44%, 21.43% with PCBM, TiO2, ZnO, C60, IGZO, SnO2, CeO2, WS2, respectively. The proposed strategy may pave the way for further design optimization of lead-free double perovskite solar cells., Comment: 36 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables

This study has explored numerous physical properties of CaPd$_3$Ti$_4$O$_{1}$2 (CPTO) and CaPd$_3$V$_4$O$_{12}$ (CPVO) quadruple perovskites employing the density functional theory (DFT) method. The mechanical permanence of these two compounds was observed by the Born stability criteria as well. The band structure of CPTO reveals a 0.88 and 0.46 eV direct narrow band gap while using GGA-mBJ and GGA-PBE potentials, respectively, which is an indication of its fascinating semiconducting nature. The calculated partial density of states indicates the strong hybridization between Pd-4d and O-2p orbital electrons for CPTO, whereas Pd-4d and V-3d-O-2p for CPVO. The study of the chemical bonding nature and electronic charge distribution graph reveals the coexistence of covalent O-V/Pd bonds, ionic O-Ti/Ca bonds, as well as metallic Ti/V-Ti/V bonding for both compounds. The Fermi surface of CPVO ensures a kind of hole as well as electron faces simultaneously, indicating the multifarious band characteristic. The prediction of the static real dielectric function (optical property) of CPTO at zero energy implies its promising dielectric nature. The photoconductivity and absorption coefficient of CPBO display good qualitative compliance with the consequences of band structure computations. The calculated thermodynamic properties manifest the thermodynamical stability for CPBO, whereas phonon dispersions of CPVO exhibit stable phonon dispersion in contrast to slightly unstable phonon dispersion of CPTO. The predicted Debye temperature ($\theta_D$) has been utilized to correlate its topical features including thermoelectric behaviors. The studied thermoelectric transport properties of CPTO yielded the Seebeck coefficient (186 V/K), power factor (11.9 Wcm$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$), and figure of merit (ZT) value of about 0.8 at 800 K, indicating that this material could be a promising candidate for thermoelectric applications., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1904.05099

Physics - Applied Physics - Abstract
In the future, when fossil fuels are exhausted, alternative energy sources will be essential for everyday needs. Hydrogen-based energy can play a vital role in this aspect. This energy is green, clean, and renewable. Elec-trochemical hydrogen devices have been used extensively in nuclear power plants to manage hydrogen-based renewable fuel. Doped zirconate materials are commonly used as an electrolyte in these electrochemical devices. These materials have excellent physical stability and high proton transport numbers, which make them suitable for multiple applications. Doping enhances the physical and electronic properties of zirconate materials and makes them ideal for practical applications. This review highlights the applications of zirconate-based pro-ton-conducting materials in electrochemical cells, particularly in tritium monitors, tritium recovery, hydrogen sensors, and hydrogen pump systems. The central section of this review summarizes recent investigations and provides a comprehensive insight into the various doping schemes, experimental setup, instrumentation, op-timum operating conditions, morphology, composition, and performance of zirconate electrolyte materials. In addition, different challenges that are hindering zirconate materials from achieving their full potential in elec-trochemical hydrogen devices are discussed. Finally, this paper lays out a few pathways for aspirants who wish to undertake research in this field., Comment: 31 pages, 13 figures

Physics - Applied Physics - Abstract
Inorganic CdTe and FeSi2-based solar cells have recently drawn a lot of attention because they offer superior thermal stability and good optoelectronic properties compared to conventional solar cells. In this work, a unique alternative technique is presented by using FeSi2 as a secondary absorber layer and In2S3 as the window layer for improving photovoltaic (PV) performance parameters. Simulating on SCAPS-1D, the proposed double-absorber (Cu/FTO/In2S3/CdTe/FeSi2/Ni) structure is thoroughly examined and analyzed. The window layer thickness, absorber layer thickness, acceptor density (NA), donor density (ND), defect density (Nt), series resistance (RS), and shunt resistance (Rsh) were simulated in detail for optimization of the above configuration to improve PV performance. According to this study, 0.5 um is the optimized thickness for both the CdTe and FeSi2 absorber layers in order to maximize efficiency. Here, the value of the optimum window layer thickness is 50 nm. For using CdTe as a single absorber, the efficiency is achieved by 13.26%. But for using CdTe and FeSi2 as a dual absorber, the efficiency is enhanced and the obtaining value is 27.35%. The other parameters are also improved and the obtaining values for fill factor (FF) are 83.68%, open-circuit voltage (Voc) is 0.6566V, and short circuit current density (JSc) is 49.78 mA/cm2. Furthermore, the proposed model performs good at 300 K operating temperature. The addition of the FeSi2 layer to the cell structure has resulted in a significant quantum efficiency (QE) enhancement because of the rise in solar spectrum absorption at longer wavelengths. The findings of this work offer a promising approach for producing high-performance and reasonably priced CdTe-based solar cells., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
A new superconductor (Na0.25K0.45)Ba3Bi4O12, having an A-site-ordered double perovskite structure, with a maximum Tc ~ 27 K has very recently been discovered through hydrothermal synthesis at 593 K. The structural, elastic, electronic, and thermal properties of the new synthesized compound have been investigated theoretically. Here we have employed the pseudo-potential plane-wave (PP-PW) approach based on the density functional (DFT) theory, within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The elastic constants (Cij), Pugh`s ratio, Cauchy`s pressure and other elastic parameters are derived and analyzed using energy strain method for the first time. We have discussed the bonding nature in the light of the electronic valence charge density. Both electron and hole-like Fermi surfaces are present in the compound under study which indicate the multiple-band nature of (Na0.25K0.45)Ba3Bi4O12. The compound is indicated to be a strongly coupled superconductor which is based on the estimated e-ph coupling constant. The thermodynamic properties such as bulk modulus, Debye temperature, heat capacities and volume thermal expansion coefficient at elevated temperature and pressure are calculated and analyzed for the first time by using quasi-harmonic model. Physics - Plasma Physics - Abstract
For a two week period during the Joint European Torus (JET) 2012 experimental campaign, the same high confinement plasma was repeated 151 times. The dataset was analysed to produce a probability density function (pdf) for the waiting times between edge-localised plasma instabilities ("ELMS"). The result was entirely unexpected. Instead of a smooth single peaked pdf, a succession of 4-5 sharp maxima and minima uniformly separated by 7-8 millisecond intervals was found. Here we explore the causes of this newly observed phenomenon, and conclude that it is either due to a self-organised plasma phenomenon or an interaction between the plasma and a real-time control system. If the maxima are a result of "resonant" frequencies at which ELMs can be triggered more easily, then future ELM control techniques can, and probably will, use them. Either way, these results demand a deeper understanding of the ELMing process., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

The heat wave in late June of 2021 (PNW21) set new temperature records in the Pacific Northwest (PNW). In Lytton the highest temperature ever recorded in Canada was measured. Several studies have already explored this extreme event in detail, however, here we compare the atmospheric air mass transport and heating processes associated with this heat wave with the 34 other most extreme heat events in the same region during the period 1960–2021, using a long backtracking time of 25 days. We found significant differences in the heat waves. During PNW21 most of the air was coming from the Philippine Sea, with more than 40% of the air located south of 15°N, and anomalous advection of sensible and latent heat from the Tropics was the dominant cause of PNW21. The latent heat was efficiently converted into sensible heat by precipitation, which was unique, as most other extremes experienced net diabatic cooling. Plain Language Summary: At the end of June in 2021 a heat wave occurred over the Pacific Northwest (PNW) and led to catastrophic damage in the region, notably the destruction of the town of Lytton by a wild fire 1 day after a new temperature record for Canada was set there. Here we look at where the air during this event was coming from and compare the atmospheric mass transport to 34 other extreme heat events in this region. We found that during the heat wave in June 2021 most of the air was coming from the Philippine Sea where it took up large amounts of heat and moisture. This source region is deeper in the Tropics than for all other extreme events. At the same time, the Philippine Sea was anomalously warm. Thus, the air was warmer and moister than for all the other extreme events already 3 weeks before reaching the PNW. The energy associated with the high tropical moisture content was efficiently converted into heat by precipitation along the Meiyu‐Baiu front—a unique process not found for any other extreme heat event. Key Points: The air causing the heat wave in late June 2021 (PNW21) came from deep in the Tropics, more south and west compared to other eventsThree weeks prior to the event, the air was warmer and moister, indicating that advection of heat from the Tropics was an important driverCondensation in a warm conveyor belt caused heating for PNW21, while most other extreme events showed overall diabatic cooling [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Physics - Plasma Physics - Abstract
First mirrors will be the plasma facing components of optical diagnostic systems in ITER. Mirror surfaces will undergo modification caused by erosion and re-deposition processes [1,2]. As a consequence, the mirror performance may be changed and may deteriorate [3,4]. In the divertor region it may also be obscured by deposition [5-7]. The limited access to in-vessel components of ITER calls for testing the mirror materials in present day devices in order to gather information on the material damage and degradation of the mirror performance, i.e. reflectivity. A dedicated experimental programme, First Mirror Test (FMT), has been initiated at the JET tokamak within the framework Tritium Retention Studies (TRS)., Comment: 12th International Congress on Plasma Physics, 25-29 October 2004, Nice (France).Submitted by B. Alpha particles with energies on the order of megaelectronvolts will be the main source of plasma heating in future magnetic confinement fusion reactors. Instead of heating fuel ions, most of the energy of alpha particles is transferred to electrons in the plasma. Furthermore, alpha particles can also excite Alfvénic instabilities, which were previously considered to be detrimental to the performance of the fusion device. Here we report improved thermal ion confinement in the presence of megaelectronvolts ions and strong fast ion-driven Alfvénic instabilities in recent experiments on the Joint European Torus. Detailed transport analysis of these experiments reveals turbulence suppression through a complex multi-scale mechanism that generates large-scale zonal flows. This holds promise for more economical operation of fusion reactors with dominant alpha particle heating and ultimately cheaper fusion electricity.
