Introduction: The lack of cognitive awareness, anosognosia, is a clinical deficit in Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia. However, an increased awareness of cognitive function, hypernosognosia, may serve as a marker in the preclinical stage. Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) might correspond to the initial symptom in the dynamic trajectory of awareness, but SCD might be absent along with low awareness of actual cognitive performance in the preclinical stage. We hypothesized that distinct meta-cognitive profiles, both hypernosognosia and anosognosia, might be identified in preclinical-AD. This research evaluated the association between cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) AD biomarkers and the awareness of episodic memory, further exploring dyadic (participant-partner) SCD reports, in the preclinical Alzheimer's continuum. Methods: We analyzed 314 cognitively unimpaired (CU) middle-aged individuals (mean age: 60, SD: 4) from the ALFA+ cohort study. Episodic memory was evaluated with the delayed recall from the Memory Binding Test (MBT). Awareness of episodic memory, meta-memory, was defined as the normalized discrepancy between objective and subjective performance. SCD was defined using self-report, and dyadic SCD profiles incorporated the study partner's report using parallel SCD-Questionnaires. The relationship between CSF Ab42/40 and CSF p-tau181 with meta-memory was evaluated with multivariable regression models. The role of SCD and the dyadic contingency was explored with the corresponding stratified analysis. Results: CSF Ab42/40 was non-linearly associated with meta-memory, showing an increased awareness up to Ab-positivity and a decreased awareness beyond this threshold. In the non-SCD subset, the non-linear association between CSF Ab42/40 and meta-memory persisted. In the SCD subset, higher Ab-pathology was linearly associated with increased awareness. Individuals presenting only study partner's SCD, defined as unaware decliners, exhibited higher levels of CSF p-tau181 correlated with lower meta-memory performance. Discussion: These results suggested that distinct meta-cognitive profiles can be identified in preclinical-AD. While most individuals might experience an increased awareness associated with the entrance in the AD continuum, hypernosognosia, some might be already losing insight and stepping into the anosognosic trajectory. This research reinforced that an early anosognosic profile, although at increased risk of AD-related decline, might be currently overlooked considering actual diagnostic criteria, and therefore its medical attention delayed. - Abstract

One of the side-effects of the financial crisis that started in 2008 has been youth emigration abroad, especially to Europe. The cultural narratives around the phenomenon are ambiguous: on one side it is seen as an attractive adventure (promoted by some politicians and businessmen), while on the other it is seen as a forced exile (denounced by social movements and youth organisations). Although this migration process is reminiscent of a previous massive emigration wave —which took place in the 50s and 60s— its character has changed: these are not rural or working class young people with low educational capital but young urban mesocracy often with very high levels of education. Mobility and communication strategies have also changed: the train, the letters and the one-way journeys have been replaced by low-cost flights, Skype and pendular journeys. In any case, this process is inscribed in the dynamics of transnational intra- and extra- European juvenile mobility, and accompanies the «anthropological journey» from the study of the «other» (young people in transit from the Global South to Spain) to the study of «us» (our own young people in transit to the global North). The article introduces texts for this edition on Emerging Themes and aims to analyse the youth emigration process as a «total social fact» (Marcel Mauss), setting up a dialogue between the economic, family, political and ideological resources of Spanish society, in the context of the current economic crisis and its aim for social renewal.

Oncolytic viruses have the potential to induce immunogenic cell death (ICD) that may provoke potent and long-lasting anti-cancer immunity. Here we aimed to characterize the ICD-inducing ability of wild-type Adenovirus (Ad), Semliki Forest virus (SFV) and Vaccinia virus (VV). We did so by investigating the cell death and immune-activating properties of virus-killed tumor cells. Ad-infection of tumor cells primarily activates autophagy, but also activate events of necroptotic and pyroptotic cell death. SFV infection on the other hand primarily activates immunogenic apoptosis while VV activates necroptosis. All viruses mediated lysis of tumor cells leading to the release of danger-associated molecular patterns, triggering of phagocytosis and maturation of dendritic cells (DCs). However, only SFV-infected tumor cells triggered significant T helper type 1 (Th1)-cytokine release by DCs and induced antigen-specific T-cell activation. Our results elucidate cell death processes activated upon Ad, SFV, and VV infection and their potential to induce T cell-mediated anti-tumor immune responses. This knowledge provides important insight for the choice and design of therapeutically successful virus-based immunotherapies.

Nowadays, antibiotic resistance is one of the main public health problems. Finding alternative strategies to the use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine is one of the great challenges. In poultry production (and in other food animals) some of these possible alternatives would be: a) to take advantage of bacterial cell to cell communication (quorum sensing) and the disruption of that communication (quorum quenching) to control the proliferation pathogens; b) the use of additives in animal feed which modulate the intestinal microbiota, promoting bacterial populations with antibacterial activity. In this study we aimed to: a) to investigate the production of acylhomoserine lactone (AHL) by Yersinia enterocolitica 057 under different conditions and its presence in the gut contents of chickens; b) to investigate the potential antimicrobial activity of the intestinal microbiota against different pathogens in three groups of chickens fed with different feed. These different diets (conventional diet, diet with xylanase, diet with xylanase and xylooligosaccharides) may promote different intestinal microbiota, and thus different antimicrobial activity, if any. The results suggest that the intestinal microbiota may interfere in the growth of Y. enterocolitica and/or its production of AHL. On the other hand, no antimicrobial activity against the pathogens tested could be detected in any of the 3 groups of chickens. The different growth conditions may have influenced the different bacterial populations able to grow on the agar plates and therefore the bacteria with potential antimicrobial activity.

My own experience as a young Spanish migrant in London drove me to consider the importance that Spanish food has for emigrants and to consider its role within the community. This article presents food as a metaphor of the youth migration process to London during the economic crisis, and is based on three elements: how they construct their identity, their transition to adulthood and their condition as transmigrants.

The article introduces texts for this edition on Emerging. Themes and aims to analyse the youth emigration process as a «total social fact» (Marcel Mauss), setting up a dialogue between the economic, family, political and ideological resources of Spanish society, in the context of the current economic crisis and its aim for social renewal.

Since the beginning of the economic crisis in Spain young people have migrated abroad looking for job opportunities. In the meantime, after the 15-M movement in 2011, Spanish society created various social movements hoping to make change happen, as well as the pro-independence movement in Catalonia that gathered strength as a response to the Spanish economic and political crisis. This paper analyses how Spanish young people in London, as transmigrants rooted in two different countries, engage with the politics of their home country through two transnational social movements in London: ANC England and the Maroon Wave London. The article describes both local movements (comparing their goals, structure and activities), showing the reasons that young Spanish migrants get involved and their experiences within them. It also rethinks the nature and modalities of young diasporic identities and political engagement in the global age through the experiences of the young people interviewed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ARTERIOVENOUS fistula , *INTRAOCULAR pressure , *OPTICAL coherence tomography , *RETINAL detachment , *EDEMA - Abstract
Arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) are abnormal shunts between the arterial and venous vascular systems. These usually produce ocular pain, increased intraocular pressure (IOP), and diplopia. Less frequently, they may cause retinal changes with visual impairment. Our purpose is to illustrate different retinal manifestations of AVF. We report the multimodal imaging study of three cases with retinal changes due to AVF, showing neurosensory retinal detachment, macular oedema, and macular ischemia. In conclusion, AVF may appear with different ophthalmic alterations. While usually increased IOP and diplopia are our main concerns, retinal study is mandatory, since a myriad of morphologic abnormalities might be present. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OCCUPATIONAL mobility , *GLOBAL economic crisis, 1998-1999 , *BRITISH withdrawal from the European Union, 2016-2020 , *HIGHER education , *UNEMPLOYMENT - Abstract
Mobility is one of the buzzwords in political discourse regarding solutions for youth unemployment in times of crisis. Young Spaniards are seen to be leaving en masse. However, there is no statistical basis to confirm this hypothesis, especially regarding the Schengen Area, and little is known about the predisposition of highly skilled young people to move abroad. This paper answers the research questions: (1) How many university students consider emigrating?; (2) What are their profiles?; (3) What are their motivations and expectations?; and (4) Where do they want to go? Our results were obtained through an online survey on Catalan university students and contrasted with data from different Catalan youth services. Our results show a high predisposition to emigrate for temporary stays. The EU, in particular the UK, is the favourite destination; however, this situation could change drastically with Brexit.
