Maestría en Ciencias en Ingeniería Química MINLP formulating a model for optimizing cooling networks is presented, whose main characteristic is that it takes into account the simultaneous optimization of all components of the cooling water system, namely the network of coolers, tower cooling and pumping subsystem. As objective function it is minimizing total cost which is the sum of operating costs and capital is established. The network design chiller is based on a superstructure which allows arrangements completely in parallel or in series or a combination of both, while that of the cooling tower is based on the method Merkel and, as to the pump , a short method is used to determine the cost function of water flow handle. The optimization variables are: inlet temperature (outlet temperature of the chiller network) and exit the cooling tower, the mixer output temperature (inlet temperature chillers network), the height of the tower, the outlet air temperature in the tower, the outlet temperature of cooling water in each network cooler, the inlet temperature at each stage in the network of coolers, the outlet temperature of each stage in the network chiller, the pump power and the fan, and the cooling water flow area and each of the coolers network. Se presenta la formulación de un modelo MINLP para la optimización de redes de enfriamiento, cuya característica principal es que toma en consideración la optimización simultánea de los componentes de todo el sistema de agua de enfriamiento, a saber: la red de enfriadores, la torre de enfriamiento y el subsistema de bombeo. Como función objetivo se establece la minimización del costo total que resulta de la suma del costo de operación y de capital. El diseño de la red de enfriadores está basado en una superestructura que permite arreglos completamente en paralelo o en serie o una combinación de ambos, en tanto que el de la torre de enfriamiento se basa en el Método de Merkel y, en cuanto a la bomba, se utiliza un método corto para determinar su costo en función del flujo de agua a manejar. Las variables de optimización son: la temperatura de entrada (temperatura de salida de la red de enfriadores) y de salida de la torre de enfriamiento, la temperatura de salida del mezclador (temperatura de entrada a la red de enfriadores), la altura de la torre, la temperatura de salida del aire en la torre, la temperatura de salida del agua de enfriamiento en cada enfriador de la red, la temperatura de entrada a cada etapa en la red de enfriadores, la temperatura de salida de cada etapa en la red de enfriadores, la potencia de la bomba y del ventilador, así como el flujo de agua de enfriamiento y el área de cada uno de los enfriadores de la red.

Abstract

Electricity generation through the burning of fossil fuels is one of the main contributors to the climate change problem. The use of renewable energy sources is a promising strategy to help mitigate this problem. This paper considers two forms of renewable energy: solar and biomass (algae) for power generation. The paper also accounts for the thermal storage of solar energy. A multiobjective optimization formulation is developed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cost in the electricity generation process. The model is based on a new superstructure that incorporates various design configurations and screens different thermal storage systems. A case study is presented to show the applicability of the proposed approach and how the economic and environmental objectives can be reconciled. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This article presents a new global optimization method for the interplant water integration based on properties to characterize streams with numerous components. The problem is formulated as an mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) model based on a superstructure that involves all possible options of interest (i.e., reuse and recycle in the same and to other plants and a set of shared treatment units). This formulation exhibits multiple local minima, and to overcome this problem, this article proposes effective branching rules in addition to two new reformulations for the upper bound (integer feasible solution) and the lower limit (relaxed solution), which are incorporated into a spatial branch and bound procedure to handle the bilinear terms in the model. The objective consists in finding the configuration with the minimum total annual cost. Results show that the global optimal solution (involving significant reductions in the fresh water consumption) is reached in few iterations and short central processing unit (CPU) time. © 2012 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 59: 813-833, 2013 [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
