Abstract

The interaction of clouds with solar and terrestrial radiation is one of the most important topics of climate research. In recent years it has been recognized that only a full three-dimensional (3D) treatment of this interaction can provide answers to many climate and remote sensing problems, leading to the worldwide development of numerous 3D radiative transfer (RT) codes. The international Intercomparison of 3D Radiation Codes (I3RC), described in this paper, sprung from the natural need to compare the performance of these 3D RT codes used in a variety of current scientific work in the atmospheric sciences. I3RC supports intercomparison and development of both exact and approximate 3D methods in its effort to 1) understand and document the errors/limits of 3D algorithms and their sources; 2) provide 'baseline' cases for future code development for 3D radiation; 3) promote sharing and production of 3D radiative tools; 4) derive guidelines for 3D radiative tool selection; and 5) improve atmospheric science education in 3D RT. Results from the two completed phases of I3RC have been presented in two workshops and are expected to guide improvements in both remote sensing and radiative energy budget calculations in cloudy atmospheres.

Abstract

The data on the radiation balance of an underlying surface, its components, and main factors defining their variations were systematized and generalized for a period of over 50 years (1958-2011) from continuous observations acquired at the Meteorological Observatory of the Moscow State University (MO MSU). The climatic norms of radiation balance were obtained and its variability (diurnal, annual, and interannual) limits were estimated. The tendency to increase in the absorbed, effective, and atmospheric back radiation and terrestrial radiation balance is mostly pronounced in the nighttime in winter months. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

An experimental and model approach has been used to study the NO2 vertical profiles and its effect on solar irradiance. The profiles of NO2 were obtained using gas analyzers, which had been installed at different levels at the Moscow State University (MSU) located at the south-western part of Moscow and at the Ostankino tower located at the north of Moscow up to the height of 350 m. Using these data diurnal and spatial variability of the NO2 content in the most polluted part of planetary boundary layer (PBL) has been analyzed within the large megalopolis. On the base of photochemical modeling we have simulated the diurnal cycle of NO2 vertical profiles for summer and winter conditions and have compared the results with the experimental ones. Using the RT modeling with input gaseous and aerosol parameters of the atmosphere obtained from the MSU Meteorological Observatory we have estimated the attenuation of spectral solar irradiance in UV and visible region of spectrum due to the NO2 content in the polluted atmosphere for different seasons.
