Supersymmetry is an algebraic property of a class of quantum Hamiltonians, a guiding principle used in the development of nuclear theory and a concept that may underpin physics beyond the Standard Model. In condensed matter, any symmetry between bosonic and fermionic entities is usually strongly broken, as for the spin and charge sectors of the $t$-$J$ model describing the dynamics of fractionalized electrons in one-dimensional materials. While the triplet excitations of a quantum spin ladder in an applied magnetic field provide a close analogue of the $t$-$J$ chain, the supersymmetric nature of this system has not been explored. Here we perform neutron spectroscopy on the spin-ladder compounds (C$_5$D$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ and (C$_5$D$_{12}$N)$_2$CuCl$_4$ over a range of applied fields and temperatures, and apply matrix-product-state (MPS) methods to the ladder and equivalent chain models, to analyse the full, momentum-resolved dynamics of a single charge excitation in a bath of fractionalized spins. We find a dramatic difference in the effects of thermal fluctuations, where strong and coherent shifts of spectral weight at the zone edge contrast with a strict pole at the zone centre, whose persistence at all temperatures constitutes an observable consequence of supersymmetry in a quantum spin ladder.

This paper introduces the Bosch street dataset (BSD), a novel multi-modal large-scale dataset aimed at promoting highly automated driving (HAD) and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) research. Unlike existing datasets, BSD offers a unique integration of high-resolution imaging radar, lidar, and camera sensors, providing unprecedented 360-degree coverage to bridge the current gap in high-resolution radar data availability. Spanning urban, rural, and highway environments, BSD enables detailed exploration into radar-based object detection and sensor fusion techniques. The dataset is aimed at facilitating academic and research collaborations between Bosch and current and future partners. This aims to foster joint efforts in developing cutting-edge HAD and ADAS technologies. The paper describes the dataset's key attributes, including its scalability, radar resolution, and labeling methodology. Key offerings also include initial benchmarks for sensor modalities and a development kit tailored for extensive data analysis and performance evaluation, underscoring our commitment to contributing valuable resources to the HAD and ADAS research community.

Density-balanced, widely separated quantum Hall bilayers at $\nu_T = 1$ can be described as two copies of composite Fermi liquids (CFLs). The two CFLs have interlayer weak-coupling BCS instabilities mediated by gauge fluctuations, the resulting pairing symmetry of which depends on the CFL hypothesis used. If both layers are described by the conventional Halperin-Lee-Read (HLR) theory-based composite electron liquid (CEL), the dominant pairing instability is in the $p+ip$ channel; whereas if one layer is described by CEL and the other by a composite hole liquid (CHL, in the sense of anti-HLR), the dominant pairing instability occurs in the $s$-wave channel. Using the Dirac composite fermion (CF) picture, we show that these two pairing channels can be mapped onto each other by particle-hole (PH) transformation. Furthermore, we derive the CHL theory as the non-relativistic limit of the PH-transformed massive Dirac CF theory. Finally, we prove that an effective topological field theory for the paired CEL-CHL in the weak-coupling limit is equivalent to the exciton condensate phase in the strong-coupling limit., Comment: 6+7 pages; 1+5 figures

The Eclipse Layout Kernel (ELK) is a collection of graph drawing algorithms that supports compound graph layout and ports as explicit anchor points of edges. It is available as open-source library under an EPL license. Since its beginning, ELK has served both as a research vehicle for graph drawing algorithms, and as a practical tool for solving real-world problems. ELK and its transpiled JavaScript cousin elkjs are now included in numerous academic and commercial projects. Most of the algorithms realized in ELK are described in a series of publications. In this paper, the technical description concentrates on the key features of the flag-ship algorithm ELK Layered, the algorithm architecture, and usage. However, the main purpose of this paper is to give the broader view that is typically left unpublished. Specifically, we review its history, give a brief overview of technical papers, discuss lessons learned over the past fifteen years, and present example usages. Finally, we reflect on potential threats to open-source graph drawing libraries.

Manipulating the size and orientation of quantum materials is often used to tune emergent phenomena, but precise control of these parameters is also necessary from an experimental point of view. Various synthesis techniques already exist, such as epitaxial thin film growth and chemical etching, that are capable of producing specific sample dimensions with high precision. However, certain materials exist as single crystals that are often difficult to manipulate, thereby limiting their studies to a certain subset of experimental techniques. One particular class of these materials are the lithium and sodium iridates that are promising candidates for hosting a Kitaev quantum spin liquid state. Here we present a controlled method of using a focused ion beam at grazing incidence to reduce the size of a $\beta$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ single crystal to a thickness of 1 $\mu m$. Subsequent x-ray diffraction measurements show the lattice remains intact, albeit with a larger mosaic spread. The integrity of the magnetic order is also preserved as the temperature dependent magnetic diffraction peak follows the same trend as its bulk counterpart with a transition temperature at TN = 37.5 K. Our study demonstrates a technique that opens up the possibility of nonequilibrium experiments where submicron thin samples are often essential.

Motivated by recent experimental indications of preformed electron-hole pairs in $\nu_T=1$ quantum Hall bilayers at relatively large separation, we formulate a Chern-Simons (CS) theory of the coupled composite electron liquid (CEL) and composite hole liquid (CHL). We show that the effective action of the CS gauge field fluctuations around the saddle-point leads to stable pairing between CEL and CHL. We find that the CEL-CHL pairing theory leads to a dominant $s$-wave channel in contrast to the dominant $p$-wave channel found in the CEL-CEL pairing theory. Moreover, the CEL-CHL pairing is generally stronger than the CEL-CEL pairing across the whole frequency spectrum. BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ is a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) quantum antiferromagnet containing three different types of stacked, square-lattice bilayer hosting spin-1/2 dimers. Although this compound has been studied extensively over the last two decades, the critical applied magnetic field required to close the dimer spin gap and induce magnetic order, which exceeds 23 T, has to date precluded any kind of neutron scattering investigation. However, the HFM/EXED instrument at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin made this possible at magnetic fields up to 25.9 T. Thus we have used HFM/EXED to investigate the field-induced ordered phase, in particular to look for quasi-2D physics arising from the layered structure and from the different bilayer types. From neutron diffraction data, we determined the global dependence of the magnetic order parameter on both magnetic field and temperature, finding a form consistent with 3D quantum critical scaling; from this we deduce that the quasi-2D interactions and nonuniform layering of BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ are not anisotropic enough to induce hallmarks of 2D physics. From neutron spectroscopy data, we measured the dispersion of the strongly Zeeman-split magnetic excitations, finding good agreement with the zero-field interaction parameters of BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$. We conclude that HFM/EXED allowed a significant extension in the application of neutron scattering techniques to the field range above 20 T and in particular opened new horizons in the study of field-induced magnetic quantum phase transitions., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures

CrBr$_3$ is an excellent realization of the two-dimensional honeycomb ferromagnet, which offers a bosonic equivalent of graphene with Dirac magnons and topological character. We perform inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements using state-of-the-art instrumentation to update 50-year-old data, thereby enabling a definitive comparison both with recent experimental claims of a significant gap at the Dirac point and with theoretical predictions for thermal magnon renormalization. We demonstrate that CrBr$_3$ has next-neighbor $J_2$ and $J_3$ interactions approximately 5\% of $J_1$, an ideal Dirac magnon dispersion at the K point, and the associated signature of isospin winding. The magnon lifetime and the thermal band renormalization show the universal $T^2$ evolution expected from an interacting spin-wave treatment, but the measured dispersion lacks the predicted van Hove features, highlighting the need for a deeper theoretical analysis.

We report the magnetic properties of $A$-site spinel compound MnSc$_2$Se$_4$. The macroscopic magnetic measurements uncovers successive magnetic transitions at $T_{\rm{N1}}$= 2.04 K, followed by two further transitions at $T_{\rm{N2}}$=1.8 K and $T_{\rm{N3}}$=1.6 K. Our goal is to recover the 3D shape and pose of dogs from a single image. This is a challenging task because dogs exhibit a wide range of shapes and appearances, and are highly articulated. Recent work has proposed to directly regress the SMAL animal model, with additional limb scale parameters, from images. Our method, called BARC (Breed-Augmented Regression using Classification), goes beyond prior work in several important ways. First, we modify the SMAL shape space to be more appropriate for representing dog shape. But, even with a better shape model, the problem of regressing dog shape from an image is still challenging because we lack paired images with 3D ground truth. To compensate for the lack of paired data, we formulate novel losses that exploit information about dog breeds. In particular, we exploit the fact that dogs of the same breed have similar body shapes. We formulate a novel breed similarity loss consisting of two parts: One term encourages the shape of dogs from the same breed to be more similar than dogs of different breeds. The second one, a breed classification loss, helps to produce recognizable breed-specific shapes. Through ablation studies, we find that our breed losses significantly improve shape accuracy over a baseline without them. We also compare BARC qualitatively to WLDO with a perceptual study and find that our approach produces dogs that are significantly more realistic. This work shows that a-priori information about genetic similarity can help to compensate for the lack of 3D training data. This concept may be applicable to other animal species or groups of species. The crystal structure and magnetic correlations in triangular antiferromagnet FeGa$_2$S$_4$ are studied by x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, neutron diffraction and neutron inelastic scattering. We report significant mixing at the cation sites and disentangle magnetic properties dominated by major and minor magnetic sites. The magnetic short-range correlations at 0.77 \AA$^{-1}$ correspond to the major sites and being static at base temperature they evolve into dynamic correlations around 30 - 50 K. The minor sites contribute to the magnetic peak at 0.6 \AA$^{-1}$, which vanishes at 5.5 K. Our analytical studies of triangular lattice models with bilinear and biquadratic terms provide the ratios between exchanges for the proposed ordering vectors. The modelling of the inelastic neutron spectrum within linear spin wave theory results in the set of exchange couplings $J_1=1.7$\,meV, $J_2=0.9$\,meV, $J_3=0.8$\,meV for the bilinear Heisenberg Hamiltonian. Classical and quantum phase transitions (QPTs), with their accompanying concepts of criticality and universality, are a cornerstone of statistical thermodynamics. An exemplary controlled QPT is the field-induced magnetic ordering of a gapped quantum magnet. Although numerous "quasi-one-dimensional" coupled spin-chain and -ladder materials are known whose ordering transition is three-dimensional (3D), quasi-2D systems are special for several physical reasons. Motivated by the ancient pigment Han Purple (BaCuSi$_{2}$O$_{6}$), a quasi-2D material displaying anomalous critical properties, we present a complete analysis of Ba$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$CuSi$_{2}$O$_{6}$. We measure the zero-field magnetic excitations by neutron spectroscopy and deduce the magnetic Hamiltonian. We probe the field-induced transition by combining magnetization, specific-heat, torque and magnetocalorimetric measurements with low-temperature nuclear magnetic resonance studies near the QPT. By a Bayesian statistical analysis and large-scale Quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we demonstrate unambiguously that observable 3D quantum critical scaling is restored by the structural simplification arising from light Sr-substitution in Han Purple., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

Event cameras are novel vision sensors that report per-pixel brightness changes as a stream of asynchronous "events". They offer significant advantages compared to standard cameras due to their high temporal resolution, high dynamic range and lack of motion blur. However, events only measure the varying component of the visual signal, which limits their ability to encode scene context. By contrast, standard cameras measure absolute intensity frames, which capture a much richer representation of the scene. Both sensors are thus complementary. However, due to the asynchronous nature of events, combining them with synchronous images remains challenging, especially for learning-based methods. This is because traditional recurrent neural networks (RNNs) are not designed for asynchronous and irregular data from additional sensors. To address this challenge, we introduce Recurrent Asynchronous Multimodal (RAM) networks, which generalize traditional RNNs to handle asynchronous and irregular data from multiple sensors. Inspired by traditional RNNs, RAM networks maintain a hidden state that is updated asynchronously and can be queried at any time to generate a prediction. We apply this novel architecture to monocular depth estimation with events and frames where we show an improvement over state-of-the-art methods by up to 30% in terms of mean absolute depth error. To enable further research on multimodal learning with events, we release EventScape, a new dataset with events, intensity frames, semantic labels, and depth maps recorded in the CARLA simulator.

The dynamical properties of free and bound domain-wall excitations in Ising-chain materials have recently become the focus of intense research interest. New materials and spectrometers have made it possible to control the environment of coupled Ising chains by both effective internal and applied external fields, which can be both longitudinal and transverse, and thus to demonstrate how the resulting magnetic phase transitions and the nature of the associated excited states obey fundamental symmetry properties. In RbCoCl$_3$, the weakly coupled Ising chains form a triangular lattice whose frustrated geometry and magnetic ordering transitions at low temperature open new possibilities for the Ising-chain environment. We have investigated the structure and magnetism in RbCoCl$_3$ by high-resolution x-ray diffraction and neutron scattering measurements on powder and single crystal samples between 1.5 K and 300 K. Upon cooling, the Co$^{2+}$ spins develop one-dimensional antiferromagnetic correlations along the chain axis ($c$-axis) below 90 K. Below the first N\'eel temperature, $T_{N1}$ = 28 K, a partial 3D magnetic order sets in, with propagation vector ${\vec k}_1$ = (1/3,1/3,1), the moments aligned along the $c$-axis and every third chain uncorrelated from its neighbours. Only below a second magnetic phase transition at $T_{N2}$ = 13 K does the system achieve a fully ordered state, with two additional propagation vectors: ${\vec k}_2$ = (0,0,1) establishes a "honeycomb" $c$-axis order, in which 1/3 of the chains are subject to a strong effective mean field due to their neighbours whereas 2/3 experience no net field, while ${\vec k}_3$ = (1/2,0,1) governs a small, staggered in-plane ordered moment. We conclude that RbCoCl$_3$ is an excellent material to study the physics of Ising chains in a wide variety of temperature-controlled environments., Comment: 23+3 pages, 10+2 figures, 6+4 tables

DuctTake is a system designed to enable practical compositing of multiple takes of a scene into a single video. Current industry solutions are based around object segmentation, a hard problem that requires extensive manual input and cleanup, making compositing an expensive part of the film-making process. Our method instead composites shots together by finding optimal spatiotemporal seams using motion-compensated 3D graph cuts through the video volume. We describe in detail the required components, decisions, and new techniques that together make a usable, interactive tool for compositing HD video, paying special attention to running time and performance of each section. We validate our approach by presenting a wide variety of examples and by comparing result quality and creation time to composites made by professional artists using current state-of-the-art tools.

Ideal magnetic frustration forms the basis for the emergence of exotic quantum spin states that are entirely nonmagnetic. Such singlet spin states are the defining feature of the Shastry-Sutherland model, and of its faithful materials realization in the quantum antiferromagnet SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$. To address these states on ultrafast timescales, despite their lack of any microscopic order parameter, we introduce a nonlinear magnetophononic mechanism to alter the quantum spin dynamics by driving multiple optical phonon modes coherently and simultaneously. We apply intense terahertz pulses to create a nonequilibrium modulation of the magnetic interactions that breaks the ideal frustration of SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$, such that previously forbidden physics can be driven in a coherent manner. Specifically, this driving populates a purely magnetic excitation, the singlet branch of the two-triplon bound state, by resonance with the difference frequency of two pumped phonons. Our results demonstrate how light-driven phonons can be used for the ultrafast and selective manipulation of interactions in condensed matter, even at frequencies far from those of the pump spectrum, offering valuable additional capabilities for the dynamical control of quantum many-body phenomena., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures

At the familiar liquid-gas phase transition in water, the density jumps discontinuously at atmospheric pressure, but the line of these first-order transitions defined by increasing pressures terminates at the critical point, a concept ubiquitous in statistical thermodynamics. In correlated quantum materials, a critical point was predicted and measured terminating the line of Mott metal-insulator transitions, which are also first-order with a discontinuous charge density. In quantum spin systems, continuous quantum phase transitions (QPTs) have been investigated extensively, but discontinuous QPTs have received less attention. The frustrated quantum antiferromagnet SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ constitutes a near-exact realization of the paradigmatic Shastry-Sutherland model and displays exotic phenomena including magnetization plateaux, anomalous thermodynamics and discontinuous QPTs. We demonstrate by high-precision specific-heat measurements under pressure and applied magnetic field that, like water, the pressure-temperature phase diagram of SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ has an Ising critical point terminating a first-order transition line, which separates phases with different densities of magnetic particles (triplets). We achieve a quantitative explanation of our data by detailed numerical calculations using newly-developed finite-temperature tensor-network methods. These results open a new dimension in understanding the thermodynamics of quantum magnetic materials, where the anisotropic spin interactions producing topological properties for spintronic applications drive an increasing focus on first-order QPTs., Comment: 8+4 pages, 4+3 figures

Magnetic skyrmions are topological solitons with a nanoscale winding spin texture that hold promise for spintronics applications. Until now, skyrmions have been observed in a variety of magnets that exhibit nearly parallel alignment for the neighbouring spins, but theoretically, skyrmions with anti-parallel neighbouring spins are also possible. The latter, antiferromagnetic skyrmions, may allow more flexible control compared to the conventional ferromagnetic skyrmions. Here, by combining neutron scattering and Monte Carlo simulations, we show that a fractional antiferromagnetic skyrmion lattice with an incipient meron character is stabilized in MnSc$_2$S$_4$ through anisotropic couplings. Our work demonstrates that the theoretically proposed antiferromagnetic skyrmions can be stabilized in real materials and represents an important step towards implementing the antiferromagnetic-skyrmion based spintronic devices., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, submitted version with necessary edits

The goal of many computer vision systems is to transform image pixels into 3D representations. Recent popular models use neural networks to regress directly from pixels to 3D object parameters. Such an approach works well when supervision is available, but in problems like human pose and shape estimation, it is difficult to obtain natural images with 3D ground truth. To go one step further, we propose a new architecture that facilitates unsupervised, or lightly supervised, learning. The idea is to break the problem into a series of transformations between increasingly abstract representations. Each step involves a cycle designed to be learnable without annotated training data, and the chain of cycles delivers the final solution. Specifically, we use 2D body part segments as an intermediate representation that contains enough information to be lifted to 3D, and at the same time is simple enough to be learned in an unsupervised way. We demonstrate the method by learning 3D human pose and shape from un-paired and un-annotated images. We also explore varying amounts of paired data and show that cycling greatly alleviates the need for paired data. The delafossite family of compounds with a triangular lattice of rare earth ions has been recently proposed as a candidate host for quantum spin liquid (QSL) states. To realize QSLs, the crystal-electric-field (CEF) ground state of the rare earth ions should be composed of a doublet that allows sizable quantum tunneling, but till now the knowledge on CEF states in the delafossite compounds is still limited. Here we employ inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to study the CEF transitions in a powder sample of the delafossite NaErS$_2$, where the large total angular momentum $J = 15/2$ of the Er$^{3+} $ ions and the resulting plethora of CEF transitions enable an accurate fit of the CEF parameters. Our study reveals nearly isotropic spins with large $J_z = \pm 1/2$ components for the Er$^{3+}$ CEF ground states, which might facilitate the development of a QSL state. The scaling of the obtained CEF Hamiltonian to different rare earth ions suggests that sizable $J_z = \pm 1/2$ components are generally present in the CEF ground states, supporting the ternary sulfide delafossites as potential QSL hosts., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, with updated XRD refinement and CEF analysis

The dimerized quantum magnet BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ was proposed as an example of "dimensional reduction" arising near the magnetic-field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) due to perfect geometrical frustration of its inter-bilayer interactions. We demonstrate by high-resolution neutron spectroscopy experiments that the effective intra-bilayer interactions are ferromagnetic, thereby excluding frustration. We explain the apparent dimensional reduction by establishing the presence of three magnetically inequivalent bilayers, with ratios 3:2:1, whose differing interaction parameters create an extra field-temperature scaling regime near the QCP with a non-trivial but non-universal exponent. We demonstrate by detailed quantum Monte Carlo simulations that the magnetic interaction parameters we deduce can account for all the measured properties of BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$, opening the way to a quantitative understanding of non-universal scaling in any modulated layered system., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

The novel magnetic phase diagram of the $Cs_2CuCl_{4-x}Br_x$ mixed system is established by means of single crystal neutron diffraction in the lowest temperature region and zero magnetic field. Two long-range ordered magnetic phases exist in this mixed system depending on the Cl/Br concentration. In the rich Cl concentration range, the ordered magnetic state occurs below the ordering temperature $T_N = 0.51(1)K$ for $Cs_2CuCl_3Br_1$ and at $Cs_2CuCl_{2.6}Br_{1.4}$ below $T_N = 0.24(2)K$. Magnetic order with a temperature-independent position $(0, 0.573(1), 0)$ below the ordering temperature $T_N = 0.63(1)K$ appears in the rich Br concentration for $Cs_2CuCl_{0.6}Br_{3.4}$. Between the rich Cl and rich Br concentration ranges (two magnetic phases), there is a range of x without magnetic order down to $50mK$. A suggestion about the magnetic exchange paths in the $bc$-layer for different regimes is presented, which can be controlled depending on the preferred Br-occupation in the [CuX4] tetrahedra. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the exchange coupling constants J, J^' for some ordered compositions of the mixed system $Cs_2CuCl_{4-x}Br_x$ indicate that these are not frustrated.

We study magnetic behaviour of the Yb$^{3+}$ ions on a frustrated pyrochlore lattice in the spinel {\CYS}. The crystal-electric field parameters deduced from high-energy inelastic neutron scattering reveal well-isolated ytterbium ground state doublet with a weakly Ising character. Magnetic order studied by powder neutron diffraction evolves from the $XY$-type antiferromagnetic $\Gamma_5$ state to a splayed ice-like ferromagnet (both with k=0) in applied magnetic field with $B_c$=3 T. Low-energy inelastic neutron scattering identifies weakly dispersive magnetic bands around 0.72 meV starting at $\mid\bf{Q}\mid$ = 1.1 \AA$^{-1}$~ at zero field, which diminish with field and vanish above 3 T. We explain the observed magnetic behaviour in framework of the nearest-neighbour anisotropic exchange model for effective $S=1/2$ Kramers doublets on the pyrochlore lattice. The estimated exchanges position the {\CYS} spinel close to the phase boundary between the $\Gamma_5$ and splayed ferromagnet states, similar to the Yb-pyrochlores suggesting an important role of the competition between these phases., Comment: 24 pages, 7 Figures

We present a route to grow single crystals of Ba$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$CuSi$_{2}$O$_{6}$ suitable for inelastic neutron studies via the floating zone technique. Neutron single crystal diffraction was utilized to check their bulk quality and orientation. Finally, the high quality of the grown crystals was proven by X-ray diffraction and magnetic susceptibility.

We report neutron scattering and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements of the 2D spin-1/2 frustrated magnet BaCdVO(PO$_{4}$)$_{2}$. At temperatures well below $T_{\sf N}\approx 1K$, we show that only 34 % of the spin moment orders in an up-up-down-down strip structure. Dominant magnetic diffuse scattering and comparison to published $\mu$sr measurements indicates that the remaining 66 % is fluctuating. This demonstrates the presence of strong frustration, associated with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions, and points to a subtle ordering mechanism driven by magnon interactions. On applying magnetic field, we find that at $T=0.1$ K the magnetic order vanishes at 3.8 T, whereas magnetic saturation is reached only above 4.5 T. We argue that the putative high-field phase is a realization of the long-sought bond-spin-nematic state.

Combining inelastic neutron scattering and numerical simulations, we study the quasi-one dimensional Ising anisotropic quantum antiferromagnet \bacovo\ in a longitudinal magnetic field. This material shows a quantum phase transition from a N\'eel ordered phase at zero field to a longitudinal incommensurate spin density wave at a critical magnetic field of 3.8 T. Concomitantly the excitation gap almost closes and a fundamental reconfiguration of the spin dynamics occurs. These experimental results are well described by the universal Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory developed for interacting spinless fermions in one dimension. We have used neutron spectroscopy to investigate the spin dynamics of the quantum (S = 1/2) antiferromagnetic Ising chains in RbCoCl3. The structure and magnetic interactions in this material conspire to produce two magnetic phase transitions at low temperatures, presenting an ideal opportunity for thermal control of the chain environment. The high-resolution spectra we measure of two-domain-wall excitations therefore characterize precisely both the continuum response of isolated chains and the "Zeeman-ladder" bound states of chains in three different effective staggered fields in one and the same material. We apply an extended Matsubara formalism to obtain a quantitative description of the entire dataset, Monte Carlo simulations to interpret the magnetic order, and finite-temperature DMRG calculations to fit the spectral features of all three phases., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Micro-swimmers put into motion by a rotating magnetic field have provided interesting challenges both in engineering and in mathematical modelling. We study here the dynamics of a permanent-magnetic rigid body submitted to a spatially-uniform steadily-rotating magnetic field in Stokes flow. This system depends on two external parameters: the Ma- son number, which is proportional to the angular speed of the magnetic field and inversely proportional to the magnitude of the field, and the conical angle between the magnetic field and its axis of rotation. This work focuses on asymptotic dynamics in the limits of low and high Mason number, and in the limit of low conical angle. Analytical solutions are provided in these three regimes. In the limit of low Mason number, the dynamical system admits a periodic solution in which the magnetic moment of the swimmer tends to align with the magnetic field. In the limit of large Mason number, the magnetic moment tends to align with the average magnetic field, which is parallel to the axis of rotation. Asymptotic dynamics in the limit of low conical angle allow to bridge these two regimes. Finally, we use numerical methods to compare these analytical predictions with numerical solutions.

We present the results of muon-spin spectroscopy ($\mu^{+}$SR) measurements on the molecular spin ladder system (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4(1-x)}$Cl$_{4x}$, [Hpip=(C$_{5}$H$_{12}$N)]. Using transverse field $\mu^{+}$SR we are able to identify characteristic behaviour in each of the regions of the phase diagram of the $x=0$ strong-rung spin ladder system (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_4$. Comparison of our results to those of the dimer-based molecular magnet Cu(pyz)(gly)(ClO$_{4}$) shows several common features. We locate the crossovers in partially disordered (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4(1-x)}$Cl$_{4x}$ ($x=0.05$), where a region of behaviour intermediate between quantum disordered and Luttinger liquid-like is identified. Our interpretation of the results incorporates an analysis of the probable muon stopping states in (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_4$ based on density functional calculations and suggests how the muon plus its local distortion can lead to a local probe unit with good sensitivity to the magnetic state. Using longitudinal field $\mu^{+}$SR we compare the dynamic response of the $x=1$ strong-rung material (Hpip)$_{2}$CuCl$_{4}$ to that of the strong-leg material (C$_{7}$H$_{10}$N)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$ (known as DIMPY) and demonstrate that our results are in agreement with predictions based on interacting fermionic quasiparticle excitations in these materials., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures

Materials based on a crown ether complex together with magnetic ions, especially Cu(II), can be used to synthesize new low dimesional quantum spin systems. We have prepared the new crown ether complex Di-\mu-chloro-bis(12-crown-4)-aquqdichloro-copper(II)-potassium, $K(C_8H_{16}O_4)_2CuCl_3{*}H_2O$ (1), determined its structure, and analyzed its magnetic properties. Complex (1) has a monoclinic structure and crystallizes in space group $P2_1/n$ with the lattice parameters of $a=9.5976(5)\r{A}$, $b=11.9814\r{A}, c=21.8713\r{A}$ and $\beta=100.945(4)\deg$. The magnetic properties of this compound have been investigated in the temperature range 1.8 K - 300 K. The magnetic susceptibility shows a maximum at 23 K, but no 3-D long range magnetic order down to 1.8 K. The S=1/2 Cu(II) ions form antiferromagnetically coupled dimers with Cu-Cl distances of $2.2554(8)\r{A}$ and $4.683(6)\r{A}$, and a Cu-Cl-Cu angle of $115.12(2)\deg$ with $2J_{dimer}=-2.96meV (-23.78 cm^{-1})$. The influence of $H_2O$ on the Cl-Cu-Cl exchange path is analyzed. Our results show that the values of the singlet-triplet splitting are increasing considering $H_2O$ molecules in the bridging interaction. This is supported by Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of coupling constants with Perdew and Wang (PWC), Perdew, Burke and Ernzenrhof (PBE) and strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) exchange-correlation function show excellent agreement for the studied compound.

Metal organic magnets have enormous potential to host a variety of electronic and magnetic phases that originate from a strong interplay between the spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom. We control this interplay in the quantum magnet CuF$_2$(D$_2$O)$_2$pyz by using high pressure to drive the system through a structural and magnetic phase transition. Using neutron scattering, we show that the low pressure state, which hosts a two-dimensional square lattice with spin-wave excitations and a dominant exchange coupling of 0.89 meV, transforms at high pressure into a one-dimensional spin-chain hallmarked by a spinon continuum and a reduced exchange interaction of 0.43 meV. This direct microscopic observation of a magnetic dimensional crossover as a function of pressure opens up new possibilities for studying the evolution of fractionalised excitations in low dimensional quantum magnets and eventually pressure-controlled metal--insulator transitions.

$BaCuSi_2O_6$ is a quasi-two dimensional spin dimer system and a model material for studying Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of magnons in high magnetic fields. The new $Ba_{1-x}Sr_xCuSi_2O_6$ mixed system, which can be grown with x < 0.3, and $BaCuSi_2O_6$, both grown by using a crystal growth method with enhanced oxygen partial pressure, have the same tetragonal structure ($I4_1/acd$) at room temperature. The mixed system shows no structural phase transition, so that the tetragonal structure is stable down to low temperatures. The oxygen partial pressure acts as control parameter for the growth process. A detailed understanding of the crystal structure depending on the oxygen content will enable the study of the spin dynamics of field-induced order states in this model magnetic compound of high current interest with only one type of dimer layers, which shows the same distance between the Cu atoms, in the structure.

Quantum spin liquid is a disordered magnetic state with fractional spin excitations. Its clearest example is found in an exactly solved Kitaev honeycomb model where a spin flip fractionalizes into two types of anyons, quasiparticles that are neither fermions nor bosons: a pair of gauge fluxes and a Majorana fermion. Here we demonstrate this kind of fractionalization in the Kitaev paramagnetic state of the honeycomb magnet $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$. The spin-excitation gap measured by nuclear magnetic resonance consists of the predicted Majorana fermion contribution following the cube of the applied magnetic field, and a finite zero-field contribution matching the predicted size of the gauge-flux gap. The observed fractionalization into gapped anyons survives in a broad range of temperatures and magnetic fields despite inevitable non-Kitaev interactions between the spins, which are predicted to drive the system towards a gapless ground state. Since the seminal ideas of Berezinskii, Kosterlitz and Thouless, topological excitations are at the heart of our understanding of a whole novel class of phase transitions. In most of the cases, those transitions are controlled by a single type of topological objects. There are however some situations, still poorly understood, where two dual topological excitations fight to control the phase diagram and the transition. Finding experimental realization of such cases is thus of considerable interest. We show here that this situation occurs in BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$, a spin-1/2 Ising-like quasi-one dimensional antiferromagnet when subjected to a uniform magnetic field transverse to the Ising axis. Using neutron scattering experiments, we measure a drastic modification of the quantum excitations beyond a critical value of the magnetic field. This quantum phase transition is identified, through a comparison with theoretical calculations, to be a transition between two different types of solitonic topological objects, which are captured by different components of the dynamical structure factor., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures; 10 additional pages of supplemental information containing 6 figures

We study the effect of non-magnetic Zn$^{2+}$ (spin-$0$) and magnetic Ni$^{2+}$ (spin-$1$) impurities on the ground state and low-lying excitations of the quasi-one-dimensional spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet Sr$_{2}$CuO$_{3}$ using inelastic neutron scattering, specific heat and bulk magnetization measurements. We show that 1 \% Ni$^{2+}$ doping in Sr$_2$CuO$_3$ results in a sizable spin gap in the spinon excitations, analogous to the case of Ni-doped SrCuO$_2$ previously reported [ref. 1]. However, a similar level of Zn$^{2+}$ doping in SrCuO$_2$, investigated here for comparison, did not reveal any signs of a spin gap. Magnetic ordering temperature was found to be suppressed in the presence of both Zn$^{2+}$ and Ni$^{2+}$ impurities, however, the rate of suppression due to Ni$^{2+}$ was found to be much more pronounced than for Zn$^{2+}$. Effect of magnetic field on the ordering temperature is investigated. We found that with increasing magnetic field, not only the magnetic ordering temperature gradually increases but the size of specific heat anomaly associated with the magnetic ordering also progressively enhances, which can be qualitatively understood as due to the field induced suppression of quantum fluctuations., Comment: Accepted in PRB

Excitations in a spin ice behave as magnetic monopoles, and their population and mobility control the dynamics of a spin ice at low temperature. CdEr$_2$Se$_4$ is reported to have the Pauling entropy characteristic of a spin ice, but its dynamics are three-orders of magnitude faster than the canonical spin ice Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. In this letter we use diffuse neutron scattering to show that both CdEr$_2$Se$_4$ and CdEr$_2$S$_4$ support a dipolar spin ice state -- the host phase for a Coulomb gas of emergent magnetic monopoles. These Coulomb gases have similar parameters to that in Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, i.e. dilute and uncorrelated, so cannot provide three-orders faster dynamics through a larger monopole population alone. We investigate the monopole dynamics using ac susceptometry and neutron spin echo spectroscopy, and verify the crystal electric field Hamiltonian of the Er$^{3+}$ ions using inelastic neutron scattering. A quantitative calculation of the monopole hopping rate using our Coulomb gas and crystal electric field parameters shows that the fast dynamics in CdEr$_2$X$_4$ (X = Se, S) are primarily due to much faster monopole hopping. Our work suggests that CdEr$_2$X$_4$ offer the possibility to study alternative spin ice ground states and dynamics, with equilibration possible at much lower temperatures than the rare earth pyrochlore examples., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

We measured the magnetic correlations in the triangular lattice spin-liquid candidate material YbMgGaO$_4$ via polarized neutron diffraction. The extracted in-plane and out-of-plane components of the magnetic structure factor show clear anisotropy. We found that short-range correlations persist at the lowest measured temperature of 52 mK and neutron scattering intensity is centered at the $M$ middle-point of the hexagonal Brillouin-zone edge. Moreover, we found pronounced spin anisotropy, with different correlation lengths for the in-plane and out-of-plane spin components. When comparing to a self-consistent Gaussian appoximation, our data clearly support a model with only first-neighbor coupling and strongly anisotropic exchanges., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The correlation functions related to topological phase transitions in inversion-symmetric lattice models described by $2\times 2$ Dirac Hamiltonians are discussed. In one dimension, the correlation function measures the charge-polarization correlation between Wannier states at different positions, while in two dimensions it measures the itinerant-circulation correlation between Wannier states. The correlation function is nonzero in both the topologically trivial and nontrivial states, and allows to extract a correlation length that diverges at topological phase transitions. The correlation length and the curvature function that defines the topological invariants are shown to have universal critical exponents, allowing the notion of universality classes to be introduced. Particularly in two dimensions, the universality class is determined by the orbital symmetry of the Dirac model. The scaling laws that constrain the critical exponents are revealed, and are predicted to be satisfied even in interacting systems, as demonstrated in an interacting topological Kondo Insulator., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

The challenge of one-dimensional systems is to understand their physics beyond the level of known elementary excitations. By high-resolution neutron spectroscopy in a quantum spin ladder material, we probe the leading multiparticle excitation by characterizing the two-magnon bound state at zero field. By applying high magnetic fields, we create and select the singlet (longitudinal) and triplet (transverse) excitations of the fully spin-polarized ladder, which have not been observed previously and are close analogs of the modes anticipated in a polarized Haldane chain. We consider the problem of layering general directed graphs under height and possibly also width constraints. Given a directed graph G = (V,A) and a maximal height, we propose a layering approach that minimizes a weighted sum of the number of reversed arcs, the arc lengths, and the width of the drawing. We call this the Compact Generalized Layering Problem (CGLP). Here, the width of a drawing is defined as the maximum sum of the number of vertices placed on a layer and the number of dummy vertices caused by arcs traversing the layer. The CGLP is NP-hard. We present two MIP models for this problem. The first one (EXT) is our extension of a natural formulation for directed acyclic graphs as suggested by Healy and Nikolov. The second one (CGL) is a new formulation based on partial orderings. Our computational experiments on two benchmark sets show that the CGL formulation can be solved much faster than EXT using standard commercial MIP solvers. Moreover, we suggest a variant of CGL, called MML, that can be seen as a heuristic approach. The Directed Layering Problem (DLP) solves a step of the widely used layer-based approach to automatically draw directed acyclic graphs. To cater for cyclic graphs, usually a preprocessing step is used that solves the Feedback Arc Set Problem (FASP) to make the graph acyclic before a layering is determined. Here we present the Generalized Layering Problem (GLP), which solves the combination of DLP and FASP simultaneously, allowing general graphs as input. We present an integer programming model and a heuristic to solve the NP-complete GLP and perform thorough evaluations on different sets of graphs and with different implementations for the steps of the layer-based approach.
