Search

X ray matter interactions are intrinsically weak, and the high energy and momentum of X rays pose significant challenges to applying strong light matter coupling techniques that are highly effective at longer wavelengths for controlling and manipulating radiation. Techniques such as enhanced coupling between light and electrons at a metal dielectric interface or within nanostructures, as well as the Purcell effect where spontaneous emission is amplified near a metallic surface are not applicable to X rays due to their fundamentally different energy and momentum scales. Here we present a novel approach for coupling X rays to surface plasmon polaritons by entangling X ray photons with SPPs in the ultraviolet range through X ray to UV spontaneous parametric down conversion in aluminum. The distinct characteristics of the SPPs are imprinted onto the angular and energy dependence of the detected X ray photons, as demonstrated in this work. Our results highlight the potential to control X rays using SPPs, unlocking exciting opportunities to enhance X ray matter interactions and explore plasmonic phenomena with atomic scale resolution a capability uniquely enabled by X rays., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

We examine the influence at room temperature of the deposit of a water layer on the phonon dynamics of a solid. It is shown that the water wetting at the surface of an Alumina monocrystal has deep effects on acoustic phonons, propagating over several hundred microns distance and taking place on a relatively long time scale. The effect of the wetting at the boundary is two-fold: a hardening of both transverse and longitudinal acoustic phonons is observed as well as a relaxation of internal stresses. These acoustic phonon energy changes were observed by inelastic X-ray scattering up to 40 meV energy loss, allowing us to probe the solid at different depths from the surface.

Synchrotron radiation facilities provide highly polarized X-ray beams across a wide energy range. However, the exact type and degree of polarization varies according to the beamline and experimental setup. To accurately determine the angle and degree of linear polarization, a portable X-ray polarimeter has been developed. This setup consists of a Silicon Drift Detector that rotates around a target made of high-density polyethylene. The imprint generated in the angular distribution of scattered photons at a 90-degree angle from the target has been exploited to determine the beam polarization. Measurements were conducted at the GALAXIES beamline of the SOLEIL Synchrotron. The expected angular distribution of the scattered photons for a given beam polarization was obtained through simulations using the Geant4 simulation toolkit. An excellent agreement between simulations and the collected data has been obtained, validating the setup and enabling a precise determination of the beam polarization.

We report on the pressure evolution of the electronic and crystal structures of the noncentrosymmetric antiferromagnet EuCoGe3. Using a diamond anvil cell, we performed high pressure fluorescence detected near-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Eu L3, Co K, and Ge K edges and synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction. In the Eu L3 spectrum, both divalent and trivalent Eu peaks are observed from the lowest pressure measurement (~2 GPa). By increasing pressure, the relative intensity of the trivalent Eu peak increases, and an average Eu valence continuously increases from 2.2 at 2 GPa to 2.31 at~50 GPa. On the other hand, no discernible changes are observed in the Co K and Ge K spectra as a function of pressure. With the increase in pressure, lattice parameters continuously decrease without changing I4mm symmetry. Negative thermal expansion is an unusual phenomenon appearing in only a handful of materials, but pursuit and mastery of the phenomenon holds great promise for applications across disciplines and industries. Here we report use of X-ray spectroscopy and diffraction to investigate the 4f-electronic properties in Y-doped SmS and employ the Kondo volume collapse model to interpret the results. Our measurements reveal an unparalleled decrease of the bulk Sm valence by over 20% at low temperatures in the mixed-valent golden phase, which we show is caused by a strong coupling between an emergent Kondo lattice state and a large isotropic volume change. The amplitude and temperature range of the negative thermal expansion appear strongly dependent on the Y concentration and the associated chemical disorder, providing control over the observed effect. This finding opens new avenues for the design of Kondo lattice materials with tunable, giant and isotropic negative thermal expansion.

The Fe/MgO magnetic tunnel junction is a classic spintronic system, with current importance technologically, and interest for future innovation. The key magnetic properties are linked directly to the structure of hard-to-access buried interfaces, and the Fe and MgO components near the surface are unstable when exposed to air, making a deeper probing, non-destructive, in-situ measurement ideal for this system. We have thus applied hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HXPS) and standing-wave (SW) HXPS in the few keV energy range to probe the structure of an epitaxially-grown MgO/Fe superlattice. The superlattice consists of 9 repeats of MgO grown on Fe by magnetron sputtering on an MgO (001) substrate, with a protective Al2O3 capping layer. We determine through SW-HXPS that 8 of the 9 repeats are similar and ordered, with a period of 33 $\pm$ 4 angstrom, with minor presence of FeO at the interfaces and a significantly distorted top bilayer with ca. 3 times the oxidation of the lower layers at the top MgO/Fe interface. There is evidence of asymmetrical oxidation on the top and bottom of the Fe layers. We find agreement with dark-field scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) and x-ray reflectivity measurements. Through the STEM measurements we confirm an overall epitaxial stack with dislocations and warping at the interfaces of ca. 5 angstrom. We also note a distinct difference in the top bilayer, especially MgO, with possible Fe inclusions. We thus demonstrate that SW-HXPS can be used to probe deep buried interfaces of novel magnetic devices with few angstrom precision., Comment: 37 pages, 13 figures

Pd/Y multilayers are high reflectance mirrors designed to work in the 7.5-11 nm wavelength range. Samples, prepared by magnetron sputtering, are deposited with or without B4C barrier layers located at the interfaces of Pd and Y layers to reduce interdiffusion, which is expected by calculating mixing enthalpy of Pd and Y. Grazing incident x-ray reflectometry is used to characterize these multilayers. B4C barrier layers are found effective on reducing the Pd-Y interdiffusion. Details of the composition of the multilayers are revealed by hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy under x-ray standing waves effect. It consists in measuring the photoemission intensity from samples that perform an angular scan in the region corresponding to the multilayer period and the incident photon energy according to the Bragg law. The experimental result indicates that Pd does not chemically react with B nor C at the Pd-B4C interfaces while Y does at the Y-B4C interfaces. The formation of Y-B or Y-C chemical compound can be the reason why the interfaces are stabilized. By comparing the experimentally obtained angular variation of the characteristic photoemission with the theoretical calculation, the depth distribution of each component element can be interpreted., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 1 tables, 19 references

We have studied the chemical and electronic properties of LaAlO3/SrVO3 ultrathin films by combining hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and transport measurements. We compare single SrVO3 (SVO) ultrathin films and SrVO3 buried below a polar LaAlO3 (LAO) thin layer, both epitaxially grown on SrTiO3. While ultrathin films (4 unit cells) of SVO do show insulating behavior over the entire temperature range, the LAO/SVO interface has a resistivity minimum at 250 K. When increasing the SVO layer thickness, the minimum is observed to shift to higher temperatures, but the resistivity stays always smaller than that of comparable SVO single films. Hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy reveals a surface or interface related V5+ component in the V 2p spectra for SVO films and LAO/SVO heterostructures, respectively, attributed to a strongly oxidized component. This chemical reconstruction is weaker in LAO/SVO heterostructures compared to single SVO films. We show that this dead layer in SVO ultrathin films has to be considered when the film thickness reaches the few unit-cells limit and propose solutions on how to prevent this detrimental effect., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures + SI 2 pages, 1 figure

The GALAXIES beamline at the SOLEIL synchrotron is dedicated to inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) and photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) in the 2.3-12 keV hard x-ray range. These two techniques offer powerful, complementary methods of characterization of materials with bulk sensitivity, chemical and orbital selectivity, resonant enhancement and high resolving power. After a description of the beamline components and endstations, we address the beamline performances through a selection of recent works both in the solid and gas phases and using either IXS or HAXPES approaches. Yb$_2$Si$_2$Al may be a prototype for exploring different aspects of the Shastry-Sutherland lattice, formed by planes of orthogonally coupled Yb ions. Measurements of the magnetic susceptibility find incoherently fluctuating Yb$^{3+}$ moments coexisting with a weakly correlated metallic state that is confirmed by measurements of the electrical resistivity. Increasing signs of Kondo coherence are found with decreasing temperature, including an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient and Kadowaki-Woods ratio that signal that the metallic state found at the lowest temperatures is a Fermi liquid where correlations have become significantly stronger. A pronounced peak in the electronic and magnetic specific heat indicates that the coupling of the Yb moments to the conduction electrons leads to an effective Kondo temperature that is approximately 30 K. The valence of Yb$_2$Si$_2$Al has been investigated with electron spectroscopy methods. Yb$_2$Si$_2$Al is found to be strongly intermediate valent ($v_F=2.68(2)$ at 80 K). Taken together, these experimental data are consistent with a scenario where a coherent Kondo lattice forms in Yb$_2$Si$_2$Al from an incoherently fluctuating ensemble of Yb moments with incomplete Kondo compensation, and strong intermediate valence character., Comment: Submitted to Physical Review B

Free-standing nanoribbons of InAs quantum membranes (QMs) transferred onto a (Si/Mo) multilayer mirror substrate are characterized by hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HXPS), and by standing-wave HXPS (SW-HXPS). Information on the chemical composition and on the chemical states of the elements within the nanoribbons was obtained by HXPS and on the quantitative depth profiles by SW-HXPS. By comparing the experimental SW-HXPS rocking curves to x-ray optical calculations, the chemical depth profile of the InAs(QM) and its interfaces were quantitatively derived with angstrom precision. We determined that: i) the exposure to air induced the formation of an InAsO$_4$ layer on top of the stoichiometric InAs(QM); ii) the top interface between the air-side InAsO$_4$ and the InAs(QM) is not sharp, indicating that interdiffusion occurs between these two layers; iii) the bottom interface between the InAs(QM) and the native oxide SiO$_2$ on top of the (Si/Mo) substrate is abrupt. In addition, the valence band offset (VBO) between the InAs(QM) and the SiO$_2$/(Si/Mo) substrate was determined by HXPS. The value of $VBO = 0.2 \pm 0.04$ eV is in good agreement with literature results obtained by electrical characterization, giving a clear indication of the formation of a well-defined and abrupt InAs/SiO$_2$ heterojunction. The longstanding problem of interpretation of satellite structures in core level photoemission spectra of metallic systems with a low density of conduction electrons is addressed using the specific example of Sb-doped SnO$_2$. Comparison of {\it ab initio} many-body calculations with experimental hard X-ray photoemission spectra of the Sn 4$d$ states shows that strong satellites are produced by coupling of the Sn core hole to the plasma oscillations of the free electrons introduced by doping. Within the same theoretical framework, spectral changes of the valence band spectra are also related to dynamical screening effects. These results demonstrate that, for the interpretation of electron correlation features in the core level photoelectron spectra of such narrow-band materials, going beyond the homogeneous electron gas electron-plasmon coupling model is essential., Comment: 6 PAGES, 4 FIGURES

The electric field control of functional properties is a crucial goal in oxide-based electronics. Non-volatile switching between different resistivity or magnetic states in an oxide channel can be achieved through charge accumulation or depletion from an adjacent ferroelectric. However, the way in which charge distributes near the interface between the ferroelectric and the oxide remains poorly known, which limits our understanding of such switching effects. Here we use a first-of-a-kind combination of scanning transmission electron microscopy with electron energy loss spectroscopy, near-total-reflection hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, and ab-initio theory to address this issue. We achieve a direct, quantitative, atomic-scale characterization of the polarization-induced charge density changes at the interface between the ferroelectric BiFeO3 and the doped Mott insulator Ca1-xCexMnO3, thus providing insight on how interface-engineering can enhance these switching effects., Comment: Work supported by ERC Consolidator grant MINT (Contract No. 615759)

At interfaces between conventional materials, band bending and alignment are classically controlled by differences in electrochemical potential. Applying this concept to oxides in which interfaces can be polar and cations may adopt a mixed valence has led to the discovery of novel two-dimensional states between simple band insulators such as LaAlO3 and SrTiO3. However, many oxides have a more complex electronic structure, with charge, orbital and/or spin orders arising from correlations between transition metal and oxygen ions. Strong correlations thus offer a rich playground to engineer functional interfaces but their compatibility with the classical band alignment picture remains an open question. Here we show that beyond differences in electron affinities and polar effects, a key parameter determining charge transfer at correlated oxide interfaces is the energy required to alter the covalence of the metaloxygen bond. Using the perovskite nickelate (RNiO3) family as a template, we probe charge reconstruction at interfaces with gadolinium titanate GdTiO3. X-ray absorption spectroscopy shows that the charge transfer is thwarted by hybridization effects tuned by the rare-earth (R) size. Charge transfer results in an induced ferromagnetic-like state in the nickelate, exemplifying the potential of correlated interfaces to design novel phases. The local electronic and magnetic properties of superconducting FeSe have been investigated by K$\beta$ x-ray emission (XES) and simultaneous x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the Fe K-edge at high pressure and low temperature. Our results indicate a sluggish decrease of the local Fe spin moment under pressure up to 7~GPa, in line with previous reports, followed by a sudden increase at higher pressure which has been hitherto unobserved. The magnetic surge is preceded by an abrupt change of the Fe local structure as observed by the decrease of the XAS pre-edge region intensity and corroborated by ab-initio simulations. This pressure corresponds to a structural transition, previously detected by x-ray diffraction, from the $Cmma$ form to the denser $Pbnm$ form with octahedral coordination of iron. Finally, the near-edge region of the XAS spectra shows a change before this transition at 5~GPa, corresponding well with the onset pressure of the previously observed enhancement of $T_c$. Our results emphasize the delicate interplay between structural, magnetic, and superconducting properties in FeSe under pressure., Comment: 4 pages

Using highly controlled coverages of graphene on SiC(0001), we have studied the structure of the first graphene layer that grows on the SiC interface. This layer, known as the buffer layer, is semiconducting. Using x-ray reflectivity and x-ray standing waves analysis we have performed a comparative study of the buffer layer structure with and without an additional monolayer graphene layer above it. We show that no more than 26\% of the buffer carbon is covalently bonded to Si in the SiC interface. We also show that the top SiC bilayer is Si depleted and is the likely the cause of the incommensuration previously observed in this system. When a monolayer graphene layer forms above the buffer, the buffer layer becomes less corrugated with signs of a change in the bonding geometry with the SiC interface. At the same time, the entire SiC interface becomes more disordered, presumably due to entropy associated with the higher growth temperature., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and KLL Auger spectra of aqueous KCl solution were measured for the K$^+$ and Cl$^-$ edges. While the XPS spectra of potassium and chloride have similar structures, both exhibiting only weak satellite structures near the main line, the Auger spectra of these isoelectronic ions differ dramatically. A very strong satellite peak was found in the K$^+$ KLL Auger spectrum at the low kinetic energy side of the $^1$D state. Using equivalent core models and ab initio calculations this spectral structure was assigned to electron transfer processes from solvent water molecules to the solvated K$^+$ cation. Contrary to the potassium case, no extra peak was found in the KLL Auger spectrum of solvated Cl$^-$ indicating on a strong dependence of the underlying processes on ionic charge. The observed charge transfer processes are suggested to play an important role in charge redistribution following single and multiple core-hole creation in atomic and molecular systems placed into an environment.

The study of photoexcited strongly correlated materials is attracting growing interest since their rich phase diagram often translates into an equally rich out-of-equilibrium behavior, including non-thermal phases and photoinduced phase transitions. With femtosecond optical pulses, electronic and lattice degrees of freedom can be transiently decoupled, giving the opportunity of stabilizing new states of matter inaccessible by quasi-adiabatic pathways. Here we present a study of the ultrafast non-equilibrium evolution of the prototype Mott-Hubbard material V2O3, which presents a transient non-thermal phase developing immediately after photoexcitation and lasting few picoseconds. For both the insulating and the metallic phase, the formation of the transient configuration is triggered by the excitation of electrons into the bonding a1g orbital, and is then stabilized by a lattice distortion characterized by a marked hardening of the A1g coherent phonon. This configuration is in stark contrast with the thermally accessible ones - the A1g phonon frequency actually softens when heating the material. Our results show the importance of selective electron-lattice interplay for the ultrafast control of material parameters, and are of particular relevance for the optical manipulation of strongly correlated systems, whose electronic and structural properties are often strongly intertwinned., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Itinerant magnets generally exhibit pressure induced transitions towards non magnetic states. Using synchrotron based X-ray diffraction and emission spectroscopy, the evolution of the lattice and spin moment in the chiral magnet MnGe was investigated in the paramagnetic state and under pressures up to 38 GPa. The collapse of spin-moment takes place in two steps. A first-order transition with a huge hysteresis around 7 GPa transforms the system from the high-spin at ambient pressure to a low-spin state. The coexistence of spin-states and observation of history-depending irreversibility is explained as effect of long-range elastic strains mediated by magnetovolume coupling. Topological insulators form a novel state of matter that provides new opportunities to create unique quantum phenomena. While the materials used so far are based on semiconductors, recent theoretical studies predict that also strongly correlated systems can show non-trivial topological properties, thereby allowing even the emergence of surface phenomena that are not possible with topological band insulators. From a practical point of view, it is also expected that strong correlations will reduce the disturbing impact of defects or impurities, and at the same increase the Fermi velocities of the topological surface states. The challenge is now to discover such correlated materials. Pressure is the cleanest way to tune heavy fermion systems to a quantum phase transition in order to study the rich physics and competing phases, and the comparison between ytterbium and cerium systems is particularly fruitful. We briefly review the mechanisms in play and show some examples of expected and unexpected behaviour. The near edge structure (XANES) in K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a widely used tool for studying electronic and local structure in materials. The precise interpretation of these spectra with the help of calculations is hence of prime importance, especially for the study of correlated materials which have a complicated electronic structure per se. The single particle approach, for example, has generally limited itself to the dominant dipolar cross-section. It has long been known however that effects beyond this approach should be taken into account, both due to the inadequacy of such calculations when compared to experiment and the presence of shake-up many-body satellites in core-level photoemission spectra of correlated materials. This effect should manifest itself in XANES spectra and the question is firstly how to account for it theoretically and secondly how to verify it experimentally. By using state-of-the-art first principles electronic structure calculations and 1s photoemission measurements we demonstrate that shake-up many-body effects are present in K-edge XAS dipolar spectra of NiO, CoO and CuO at all energy scales. We show that shake-up effects can be included in K-edge XAS spectra in a simple way by convoluting the single-particle first-principles calculations including core-hole effects with the 1s photoemission spectra. We thus describe all features appearing in the XAS dipolar cross-section of NiO and CoO and obtain a dramatic improvement with respect to the single-particle calculation in CuO. These materials being prototype correlated magnetic oxides, our work points to the presence of shake-up effects in K-edge XANES of most correlated transition metal compounds and shows how to account for them, paving the way to a precise understanding of their electronic structure., Comment: 6 pages, 4 pictures

X-ray absorption spectroscopy is a well established tool for obtaining information about orbital and spin degrees of freedom in transition metal- and rare earth-compounds. For this purpose usually the dipole transitions of the L- (2p to 3d) and M- (3d to 4f) edges are employed, whereas higher order transitions such as quadrupolar 1s to 3d in the K-edge are rarely studied in that respect. This is due to the fact that usually such quadrupolar transitions are overshadowed by dipole allowed 1s to 4p transitions and, hence, are visible only as minor features in the pre-edge region. Nonetheless, these features carry a lot of valuable information, similar to the dipole L-edge transition, which is not accessible in experiments under pressure due to the absorption of the diamond anvil pressurecell. We recently performed a theoretical and experimental analysis of such a situation for the metal insulator transition of (V(1-x)Crx)2O3. Since the importance of the orbital degrees of freedom in this transition is widely accepted, a thorough understanding of quadrupole transitions of the vanadium K-pre-edge provides crucial information about the underlying physics. Moreover, the lack of inversion symetry at the vanadium site leads to onsite mixing of vanadium 3d- and 4p- states and related quantum mechanical interferences between dipole and quadrupole transitions. Here we present a theoretical analysis of experimental high resolution x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the V pre-K edge measured in partial fluorescence yield mode for single crystals. We carried out density functional as well as configuration interaction calculations in order to capture effects coming from both, itinerant and atomic limits.

V2O3 is an archetypal system for the study of correlation induced, Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transitions. Despite decades of extensive investigations, the accurate description of its electronic properties remains an open problem in the physics of strongly correlated materials, also because of the lack of detailed experimental data on its electronic structure over the whole phase diagram. We present here a high resolution X-ray absorption spectroscopy study at the V K-edge of (V(1-x)Crx)2O3 to probe its electronic structure as a function of temperature, doping and pressure, providing an accurate picture of the electronic changes over the whole phase diagram. We also discuss the relevance of the parallel evolution of the lattice parameters, determined with X-ray diffraction. This allows us to draw two conclusions of general interest: first, the transition under pressure presents peculiar properties, related to a more continuous evolution of the lattice and electronic structure; second, the lattice mismatch is a good parameter describing the strength of the first order transition, and is consequently related to the tendency of the system towards the coexistence of different phases. Our results show that the evolution of the electronic structure while approaching a phase transition, and not only while crossing it, is also a key element to unveil the underlying physical mechanisms of Mott materials .

We report an experimental determination of the dispersion of the soft phonon mode along [1,0,0] in uranium as a function of pressure. The energies of these phonons increase rapidly, with conventional behavior found by 20 GPa, as predicted by recent theory. New calculations demonstrate the strong pressure (and momentum) dependence of the electron-phonon coupling, whereas the Fermi-surface nesting is surprisingly independent of pressure. This allows a full understanding of the complex phase diagram of uranium, and the interplay between the charge-density wave and superconductivity.

V2O3 is the prototype system for the Mott transition, one of the most fundamental phenomena of electronic correlation. Temperature, doping or pressure induce a metal to insulator transition (MIT) between a paramagnetic metal (PM) and a paramagnetic insulator (PI). This or related MITs have a high technological potential, among others for intelligent windows and field effect transistors. However the spatial scale on which such transitions develop is not known in spite of their importance for research and applications. Here we unveil for the first time the MIT in Cr-doped V2O3 with submicron lateral resolution: with decreasing temperature, microscopic domains become metallic and coexist with an insulating background. This explains why the associated PM phase is actually a poor metal. The phase separation can be associated with a thermodynamic instability near the transition. This instability is reduced by pressure which drives a genuine Mott transition to an eventually homogeneous metallic state., Comment: Paper plus supplementary material

The changes in the electronic structure of V2O3 across the metal-insulator transition induced by temperature, doping and pressure are identified using high resolution x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the V pre K-edge. Contrary to what has been taken for granted so far, the metallic phase reached under pressure is shown to differ from the one obtained by changing doping or temperature. Using a novel computational scheme, we relate this effect to the role and occupancy of the a1g orbitals. This finding unveils the inequivalence of different routes across the Mott transition in V2O3

Using high resolution x-ray absorption spectroscopy and state-of-the-art electronic structure calculations we demonstrate that the pre-edge region at the Cu K-edge of high T$_c$ cuprates is composed of several excitationsinvisible in standard X-ray absorption spectra. We consider in detail the case of Ca$_{2-x}$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ and show that the many pre-edge excitations (two for c-axis polarization, four for in-plane polarization and out-of-plane incident X-ray momentum) are dominated by off-site transitions and intersite hybridization. This demonstrates the relevance of approaches beyond the single-site model for the description of the pre-edges of correlated materials. Finally, we show the occurrence of a doubling of the main edge peak that is most visible when the polarization is along the c-axis. This doubling, that has not been seen in any previous absorption data in cuprates, is not reproduced by first principles calculations. We suggest that this peak is due to many-body charge-transfer excitations, while all the other visible far-edge structures are single particle in origin. We investigate the magnetic properties of archetypal transition-metal oxides MnO, FeO, CoO and NiO under very high pressure by x-ray emission spectroscopy at the K\beta line. We observe a strong modification of the magnetism in the megabar range in all the samples except NiO. The results are analyzed within a multiplet approach including charge-transfer effects. The pressure dependence of the emission line is well accounted for by changes of the ligand field acting on the d electrons and allows us to extract parameters like local d-hybridization strength, O-2p bandwidth and ionic crystal field across the magnetic transition. The electronic properties of Co in bulk Na0.7CoO2 and the superconducting hydrated compound Na0.35CoO2 - y H2O have been investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) using hard x-rays. The XAS spectra at the Co K-edge were measured in both compounds with two different polarization directions. The changes in the XAS spectra upon hydration and their polarization dependence are well accounted for by linear muffin- tin orbital calculations in the local density approximation. The underlying electronic structure indicates the strong hybridization between the Co 3d and O 2p states in both compounds, while the electron localization is enhanced in the hydrated compound due to the increase of the Co-Co interplanar distance. The Co K pre-edge further highlights the splitting of the d band as a result of the crystal field effect and demonstrates the Co valency increase when Na0.7CoO2 is hydrated. The RIXS spectra measured at the Co K-edge show an energy loss feature around 10 eV in both compounds in fair agreement with the calculated dynamical structure factor. The phonon dispersion curve of SmS under pressure was studied by inelastic x-ray scattering around the pressure-induced valence transition. A significant softening of the longitudinal acoustic modes propagating along the [111] direction was observed spanning a wide $q$ region from ($\frac{2\pi}{3a},\frac{2\pi}{3a},\frac{2\pi}{3a}$) up to the zone boundary as SmS becomes metallic. The largest softening occurs at the zone boundary and stays stable up to the highest measured pressure of 80 kbar while a gradual hardening of the low $q$ modes simultaneously appears. This phonon spectrum indicates favorable conditions for the emergence of pressure-induced superconductivity in SmS., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) has been measured at the Co K edge in Co-hcp and R-Co compounds (R=La, Tb, Dy). The structure of the experimental XMCD spectra in the near-edge region has been observed to be highly sensitive to the magnetic environment of the absorbing site. Calculations of the XMCD have been carried out at the Co K edge in Co metal, LaCo$_5$ and TbCo$_5$ within the multiple-scattering framework including the spin-orbit coupling. In the three systems, the XMCD spectra in the near-edge region are well reproduced. The possibility to separate and quantitatively estimate the local effects from those due to the neighboring atoms in the XMCD cross section makes possible a more physical understanding of the spectra.
