Search

Extracting the rotational energy from a Kerr black hole (BH) is one of the crucial topics in relativistic astrophysics. Here, we give special attention to the Penrose ballistic process based on the fission of a massive particle $\mu_0$ into two particles $\mu_1$ and $\mu_2$, occurring in the ergosphere of a Kerr BH. Bardeen et al. indicated that for the process to occur, some additional "{\it hydrodynamical forces or superstrong radiation reactions}" were needed. Wald and Chandrasekhar further expanded this idea. This animosity convinced T. Piran and collaborators to move from a simple three-body system characterizing the original Penrose process to a many-body system. This many-body approach was further largely expanded by others, some questionable in their validity. Here, we return to the simplest original Penrose process and show that the solution of the equations of motion, imposing the turning point condition on their trajectories, leads to the rotational energy extraction from the BH expected by Penrose. The efficiency of energy extraction by a single process is quantified for three different single decay processes occurring respectively at $r=1.2 M$, $r=1.5 M$, and $r=1.9 M$. An interesting repetitive model has been proposed by Misner, Thorne \& Wheeler \citep[][hereafter MTW73]{Misner:1973prb}. Indeed, it would appear that a repetitive sequence of $246$ decays of the above injection process at $r=1.2 M$ and the corresponding ones at $r=1.5 M$ and $r=1.9 M$ could extract $100\%$ of the rotational energy of the BH, so violating energy conservation. Binary driven hypernova (BdHN) models long gamma-ray burst (GRBs) as occurring in the binary systems involving a carbon-oxygen core (CO$_{\rm core}$) and a companion neutron star (NS) or a black hole (BH). This model, first proposed in 2012, succeeds and improves upon the fireshell model and the induced gravitational collapse (IGC) paradigm. After nearly a decade of development, the BdHN model has reached a nearly complete structure, explaining all the observables of long bursts into its theoretical framework, and has given a refined classification of long GRBs according to the original properties of the progenitors. We study the non-linear structure formation in cosmology accounting for the quantum nature of the dark matter (DM) particles in the initial conditions at decoupling, as well as in the relaxation and stability of the DM halos. Differently from cosmological N-body simulations, we use a thermodynamic approach for collisionless systems of self-gravitating fermions in General Relativity, in which the halos reach the steady state by maximizing a coarse-grained entropy. We show the ability of this approach to provide answers to crucial open problems in cosmology, among others: the mass and nature of the DM particle, the formation and nature of supermassive black holes in the early Universe, the nature of the intermediate mass black holes in small halos, and the core-cusp problem., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures. Gamma-ray burst (GRB) 190114C first resembles the legendary GRB 130427A: Both are strong sources of GeV emission, exhibiting consistent GeV spectral evolution, and almost identical in detail for the morphology of light-curves in X-ray, gamma-ray and GeV bands, inferring a standard system with different scales. GRB 190114C is richer than GRB 130427A: a large percentage of $\sim 30\%$ energy is thermal presenting in the gamma-ray prompt emission, making it as one of the most thermal-prominent GRBs; Moreover, GRB 190114C extends the horizon of GRB research, that for the first time the ultra-high energy TeV emission ($> 300$~GeV) is detected in a GRB as reported by the MAGIC team. Furthermore, GRB 190114C urges us to revisit the traditional theoretical framework, since most of the GRB's energy may emit in the GeV and TeV range, not in the conventional MeV range. Since GRB 190114C confidently supports that MeV and GeV emissions have the same origin, it helps to establish a new comprehensive acceleration and radiation mechanism. We investigate the evolution of isolated, zero and finite temperature, massive, uniformly rotating and highly magnetized white dwarf stars under angular momentum loss driven by magnetic dipole braking. We consider the structure and thermal evolution of white dwarf isothermal cores taking also into account the nuclear burning and neutrino emission processes. We estimate the white dwarf lifetime before it reaches the condition either for a type Ia supernova explosion or for the gravitational collapse to a neutron star. We study white dwarfs with surface magnetic fields from $10^6$ to $10^{9}$~G and masses from $1.39$ to $1.46~M_\odot$ and analyze the behavior of the white dwarf parameters such as moment of inertia, angular momentum, central temperature and magnetic field intensity as a function of lifetime. The magnetic field is involved only to slow down white dwarfs, without affecting their equation of state and structure. In addition, we compute the characteristic time of nuclear reactions and dynamical time scale. On 2018 July 28, GRB 180728A triggered \textit{Swift} satellites and, soon after the determination of the redshift, we identified this source as a type II binary-driven hypernova (BdHN II) in our model. Consequently, we predicted the appearance time of its associated supernova (SN), which was later confirmed as SN 2018fip. A BdHN II originates in a binary composed of a carbon-oxygen core (CO$_{\rm core}$) undergoing SN, and the SN ejecta hypercritically accrete onto a companion neutron star (NS). From the time of the SN shock breakout to the time when the hypercritical accretion starts, we infer the binary separation $\simeq 3 \times 10^{10}$ cm. The accretion explains the prompt emission of isotropic energy $\simeq 3 \times 10^{51}$ erg, lasting $\sim 10$ s, and the accompanying observed blackbody emission from a thermal convective instability bubble. The new neutron star ($\nu$NS) originating from the SN powers the late afterglow from which a $\nu$NS initial spin of $2.5$ ms is inferred. We compare GRB 180728A with GRB 130427A, a type I binary-driven hypernova (BdHN I) with isotropic energy $> 10^{54}$ erg. For GRB 130427A we have inferred an initially closer binary separation of $\simeq 10^{10}$ cm, implying a higher accretion rate leading to the collapse of the NS companion with consequent black hole formation, and a faster, $1$ ms spinning $\nu$NS. In both cases, the optical spectra of the SNe are similar, and not correlated to the energy of the gamma-ray burst. The induced gravitational collapse (IGC) paradigm of long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) associated with supernovae (SNe) predicts a copious neutrino-antineutrino ($\nu\bar{\nu}$) emission owing to the hypercritical accretion process of SN ejecta onto a neutron star (NS) binary companion. The neutrino emission can reach luminosities of up to $10^{57}$MeV s$^{-1}$, mean neutrino energies 20 MeV, and neutrino densities $10^{31}$ cm$^{-3}$. Along their path from the vicinity of the NS surface outward, such neutrinos experience flavor transformations dictated by the neutrino to electron density ratio. We determine the neutrino and electron on the accretion zone and use them to compute the neutrino flavor evolution. For normal and inverted neutrino-mass hierarchies and within the two-flavor formalism ($\nu_{e}\nu_{x}$), we estimate the final electronic and non-electronic neutrino content after two oscillation processes: (1) neutrino collective effects due to neutrino self-interactions where the neutrino density dominates and, (2) the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein (MSW) effect, where the electron density dominates. We find that the final neutrino content is composed by $\sim$55% ($\sim$62%) of electronic neutrinos, i.e. $\nu_{e}+\bar{\nu}_{e}$, for the normal (inverted) neutrino-mass hierarchy. The results of this work are the first step toward the characterization of a novel source of astrophysical MeV-neutrinos in addition to core-collapse SNe and, as such, deserve further attention., Comment: 17 pages, 22 figures, accepted for publication on ApJ

We compute the binding energy and angular momentum of a test-particle at the last stable circular orbit (LSO) on the equatorial plane around a general relativistic, rotating neutron star (NS). We present simple, analytic, but accurate formulas for these quantities that fit the numerical results and which can be used in several astrophysical applications. We demonstrate the accuracy of these formulas for three different equations of state (EOS) based on nuclear relativistic mean-field theory models and argue that they should remain still valid for any NS EOS that satisfy current astrophysical constraints. We investigate isolated sub- and super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs which lose angular momentum through magnetic dipole braking. We construct constant rest mass sequences by fulfilling all stability criteria of rotating configurations and show how the main structure of white dwarfs such as the central density, mean radius and angular velocity change with time. We explicitly demonstrate that all isolated white dwarfs regardless of their masses, by angular momentum loss, shrink and increase their central density. We construct equilibrium configurations of uniformly rotating neutron stars for selected relativistic mean-field nuclear matter equations of state (EOS). We compute in particular the gravitational mass ($M$), equatorial ($R_{\rm eq}$) and polar ($R_{\rm pol}$) radii, eccentricity, angular momentum ($J$), moment of inertia ($I$) and quadrupole moment ($M_2$) of neutron stars stable against mass-shedding and secular axisymmetric instability. By constructing the constant frequency sequence $f=716$ Hz of the fastest observed pulsar, PSR J1748-2446ad, and constraining it to be within the stability region, we obtain a lower mass bound for the pulsar, $M_{\rm min}=[1.2$-$1.4] M_\odot$, for the EOS employed. Moreover we give a fitting formula relating the baryonic mass ($M_b$) and gravitational mass of non-rotating neutron stars, $M_b/M_\odot=M/M_\odot+(13/200)(M/M_\odot)^2$ [or $M/M_\odot=M_b/M_\odot-(1/20)(M_b/M_\odot)^2$], which is independent on the EOS. We also obtain a fitting formula, although not EOS independent, relating the gravitational mass and the angular momentum of neutron stars along the secular axisymmetric instability line for each EOS. We compute the maximum value of the dimensionless angular momentum, $a/M\equiv c J/(G M^2)$ (or "Kerr parameter"), $(a/M)_{\rm max}\approx 0.7$, found to be also independent on the EOS. We compare and contrast then the quadrupole moment of rotating neutron stars with the one predicted by the Kerr exterior solution for the same values of mass and angular momentum. Finally we show that, although the mass quadrupole moment of realistic neutron stars never reaches the Kerr value, the latter is closely approached from above at the maximum mass value, as physically expected from the no-hair theorem. We describe one of the so-called low magnetic field magnetars SGR 0418+5729, as a massive fast rotating highly magnetized white dwarf following Malheiro et. al. 2012. We give bounds for the mass, radius, moment of inertia, and magnetic field for these sources, by requesting the stability of realistic general relativistic uniformly rotating configurations. Based on these parameters, we improve the theoretical prediction of the lower limit of the spin-down rate of SGR 0418+5729. The properties of uniformly rotating white dwarfs (RWDs) are analyzed within the framework of Newton's gravity and general relativity. In both cases Hartle's formalism is applied to construct the internal and external solutions to the field equations. The white dwarf (WD) matter is described by the Chandrasekhar equation of state. The region of stability of RWDs is constructed taking into account the mass-shedding limit, inverse $\beta$-decay instability, and the boundary established by the turning points of constant angular momentum $J$ sequences which separates stable from secularly unstable configurations. We found the minimum rotation period $\sim0.28$ s in both cases and maximum rotating masses $\sim1.534 M_{\odot}$ and $\sim1.516 M_{\odot}$ for the Newtonian and general relativistic WDs, respectively. By using the turning point method we show that general relativistic WDs can indeed be axisymmetrically unstable whereas the Newtonian WDs are stable., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. We consider applications of general relativistic uniformly-rotating white dwarfs to several astrophysical phenomena related to the spin-up and the spin-down epochs and to delayed type Ia supernova explosions of super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs, where we estimate the "spinning down" lifetime due to magnetic-dipole braking. In addition, we describe the physical properties of Soft Gamma Repeaters and Anomalous X-Ray Pulsars as massive rapidly-rotating highly-magnetized white dwarfs. Globally neutral neutron stars, obtained from the solution of the called Einstein-Maxwell-Thomas-Fermi equations that account for all the fundamental interactions, have been recently introduced. These configurations have a more general character than the ones obtained with the traditional Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff, which impose the condition of local charge neutrality. The resulting configurations have a less massive and thinner crust, leading to a new mass-radius relation. Signatures of this new structure of the neutron star on the thermal evolution might be a potential test for this theory. We compute the cooling curves by integrating numerically the energy balance and transport equations in general relativity, for globally neutral neutron stars with crusts of different masses and sizes, according to this theory for different core-crust transition interfaces. We compare and contrast our study with known results for local charge neutrality. We found a new behavior for the relaxation time, depending upon the density at the base of the crust, $\rho_{\rm crust}$. In particular, we find that the traditional increase of the relaxation time with the crust thickness holds only for configurations whose density of the base of the crust is greater than $\approx 5\times 10^{13}$ g cm$^{-3}$. The reason for this is that neutron star crusts with very thin or absent inner crust have some neutrino emission process blocked which keep the crust hotter for longer times. Therefore, accurate observations of the thermal relaxation phase of neutron stars might give crucial information on the core-crust transition which may aid us in probing the inner composition/structure of these objects.

We have recently developed a neutron star model fulfilling global and not local charge neutrality, both in the static and in the uniformly rotating cases. The model is described by the coupled Einstein-Maxwell-Thomas- Fermi (EMTF) equations, in which all fundamental interactions are accounted for in the framework of general relativity and relativistic mean field theory. Uniform rotation is introduced following the Hartle's formalism. We show that the use of realistic parameters of rotating neutron stars obtained from numerical integration of the self-consistent axisymmetric general relativistic equations of equilibrium leads to values of the magnetic field and radiation efficiency of pulsars very different from estimates based on fiducial parameters assuming a neutron star mass, M = 1.4 Msun, radius R = 10 km, and moment of inertia, I = 10^45 g cm^2. In addition, we compare and contrast the magnetic field inferred from the traditional Newtonian rotating magnetic dipole model with respect to the one obtained from its general relativistic analog which takes into due account the effect of the finite size of the source. We apply these considerations to the specific high-magnetic field pulsars class and show that, indeed, all these sources can be described as canonical pulsars driven by the rotational energy of the neutron star, and with magnetic fields lower than the quantum critical field for any value of the neutron star mass., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal, in press

The induced gravitational collapse (IGC) paradigm has been successfully applied to the explanation of the concomitance of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with supernovae (SNe) Ic. The progenitor is a tight binary system composed by a carbon-oxygen (CO) core and a neutron star (NS) companion. The explosion of the SN leads to hypercritical accretion onto the NS companion which reaches the critical mass, hence inducing its gravitational collapse to a black hole (BH) with consequent emission of the GRB. The first estimates of this process were based on a simplified model of the binary parameters and the Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion rate. We present here the first full numerical simulations of the IGC phenomenon. We simulate the core-collapse and SN explosion of CO stars to obtain the density and ejection velocity of the SN ejecta. We follow the hydrodynamic evolution of the accreting material falling into the Bondi-Hoyle surface of the NS all the way up to its incorporation to the NS surface. The simulations go up to BH formation when the NS reaches the critical mass. For appropriate binary parameters the IGC occurs in short timescales (100-1000s) owing to the combined effective action of the photon trapping and the neutrino cooling near the NS surface. We also show that the IGC scenario leads to a natural explanation for why GRBs are associated only to SN Ic with totally absent or very little helium., Comment: 5 pages including 3 figures, accepted by ApJL

The properties of the electric field of a two-body system consisting of a Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole and a charged massive particle at rest have recently been analyzed in the framework of first order perturbation theory following the standard approach of Regge, Wheeler and Zerilli. In the present paper we complete this analysis by numerically constructing and discussing the lines of force of the "effective" electric field of the sole particle with the subtraction of the dominant contribution of the black hole. We also give the total field due to the black hole and the particle. As the black hole becomes extreme an effect analogous to the Meissner effect arises for the electric field, with the "effective field" lines of the point charge being expelled by the outer horizon of the black hole. This effect existing at the level of test field approximation, i.e. by neglecting the backreaction on the background metric and electromagnetic field due to the particle's mass and charge, is here found also at the complete perturbative level. We point out analogies with similar considerations for magnetic fields by Bi{\v c}\'ak and Dvo{\v r}\'ak. We also explicitly show that the linearization of the recently obtained Belinski-Alekseev exact solution coincides with our solution in the Regge-Wheeler gauge. Essay selected for Honorable mention 2014 by the Gravity Research Foundation. We study an isothermal system of semi-degenerate self-gravitating fermions in General Relativity (GR). The most general solutions present mass density profiles with a central degenerate compact core governed by quantum statistics followed by an extended plateau, and ending in a power law behaviour $r^{-2}$. By fixing the fermion mass $m$ in the keV regime, the different solutions depending on the free parameters of the model: the degeneracy and temperature parameters at the center, are systematically constructed along the one-parameter sequences of equilibrium configurations up to the critical point, which is represented by the maximum in a central density ($\rho_0$) Vs. core mass ($M_c$) diagram. We show that for fully degenerate cores, the Oppenheimer-Volkoff (OV) mass limit $M_{c}^{cr}\propto M_{pl}^3/m^2$ is obtained, while instead for low degenerate cores, the critical core mass increases showing the temperature effects in a non linear way. The main result of this work is that when applying this theory to model the distribution of dark matter in big elliptical galaxies from miliparsec distance-scales up to $10^2$ Kpc, we do not find any critical core-halo configuration of self-gravitating fermions, able to explain both the most super-massive dark object at their center together with the DM halo simultaneously., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. One longstanding mystery in bio-evolution since Darwin's time is the origin of the Cambrian explosion that happened around 540 million years ago (Mya), where an extremely rapid increase of species occurred. Here we suggest that a nearby GRB event ~500 parsecs away, which should occur about once per 5 Gy, might have triggered the Cambrian explosion. Due to a relatively lower cross section and the conservation of photon number in Compton scattering, a substantial fraction of the GRB photons can reach the sea level and would induce DNA mutations in organisms protected by a shallow layer of water or soil, thus expediting the bio-diversification. This possibility of inducing genetic mutations is unique among all candidate sources for major incidents in the history of bio-evolution. A possible evidence would be the anomalous abundance of certain nuclear isotopes with long half-lives transmuted by the GRB photons in geological records from the Cambrian period. It has at times been indicated that Landau introduced neutron stars in his classic paper of 1932. This is clearly impossible because the discovery of the neutron by Chadwick was submitted more than one month after Landau's work. Therefore, and according to his calculations, what Landau really did was to study white dwarfs, and the critical mass he obtained clearly matched the value derived by Stoner and later by Chandrasekhar. The birth of the concept of a neutron star is still today unclear. Clearly, in 1934, the work of Baade and Zwicky pointed to neutron stars as originating from supernovae. Oppenheimer in 1939 is also well known to have introduced general relativity (GR) in the study of neutron stars. The aim of this note is to point out that the crucial idea for treating the neutron star has been advanced in Newtonian theory by Gamow. However, this pioneering work was plagued by mistakes. The critical mass he should have obtained was $6.9\,M_\odot$, not the one he declared, namely, $1.5\ M_\odot$. Probably, he was taken to this result by the work of Landau on white dwarfs. We revise Gamow's calculation of the critical mass regarding calculational and conceptual aspects and discuss whether it is justified to consider it the first neutron-star critical mass. We compare Gamow's approach to other early and modern approaches to the problem.

Based on the Thomas-Fermi solution for compressed electron gas around a giant nucleus, $Z\approx 10^6$, we study electric pulsations of electron number-density, pressure and electric fields, which could be caused by an external perturbations acting on the nucleus or the electrons themselves. We numerically obtain the eigen-frequencies and eigen-functions for stationary pulsation modes that fulfill the boundary-value problem established by electron-number and energy-momentum conservation, equation of state, laws of thermodynamics, and Maxwell's equations, as well as physical boundary conditions. We choose a proton number of $Z=10^6$ and assume the nucleons in $\beta$-equilibrium at nuclear density. Similar systems with non-spherical geometry are hypothesized to exist in the lower crust of neutron stars, commonly referred to as \textit{pasta equation of state}. The lowest modes turn out to be heavily influenced by the relativistic plasma frequency induced by the positive charge background in the nucleus. We discuss the possibility to apply our results to dynamic nuclei using the spectral method and mention mechanisms that could stimulate such dynamics in the astrophysical context.

We study an isothermal system of semi-degenerate self-gravitating fermions in general relativity. The problem of modeling the distribution of dark matter in galaxies in terms of equilibrium configurations of collisionless self-gravitating quantum particles is considered. We first summarize the pioneering model of a Newtonian self-gravitating Fermi gas in thermodynamic equilibrium developed by Ruffini and Stella (1983), which is shown to be the generalization of the King model for fermions. We further review the extension of the former model developed by Gao, Merafina and Ruffini (1990), done for any degree of fermion degeneracy at the center ($\theta_0$), within general relativity. Finally, we present here for the first time the solutions of the density profiles and rotation curves corresponding to the Gao et. al. model, which have a definite mass $M_h$ and circular velocity $v_h$, at the halo radius $r_h$ of the configurations, typical of spiral galaxies. We propose a unified model for dark matter haloes and central galactic objects as a self-gravitating system of semidegenerated fermions in thermal equilibrium. We consider spherical symmetry and then we solve the equations of gravitational equilibrium using the Fermi integrals in a dimensionless manner, obtaining the density profile and velocity curve. We review recent progress in our understanding of the nature of gamma ray bursts (GRBs) and in particular, of the relationship between short GRBs and long GRBs. The first example of a short GRB is described. The coincidental occurrence of a GRB with a supernova (SN) is explained within the induced gravitational collapse (IGC) paradigm, following the sequence: 1) an initial binary system consists of a compact carbon-oxygen (CO) core star and a neutron star (NS); 2) the CO core explodes as a SN, and part of the SN ejecta accretes onto the NS which reaches its critical mass and collapses to a black hole (BH) giving rise to a GRB; 3) a new NS is generated by the SN as a remnant. It has been proposed that the temporal coincidence of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) and a type Ib/c supernova (SN) can be explained with the concept of induced gravitational collapse (IGC), induced by the matter ejected from an SN Ib/c accreting onto a neutron star (NS). We found a standard luminosity light curve behavior in the late-time X-ray emission of this subclass of GRBs. We interpret this as the result of a common physical mechanism in this particular phase of the X-ray emission, possibly related to the creation of the NS from the SN process. Taking into account the Euler-Heisenberg effective Lagrangian of one-loop nonperturbative quantum electrodynamics (QED) contributions, we formulate the Einstein-Euler-Heisenberg theory and study the solutions of nonrotating black holes with electric and magnetic charges in spherical geometry. In the limit of strong and weak electromagnetic fields of black holes, we calculate the black hole horizon radius, area, and total energy up to the leading order of QED corrections and discuss the black hole irreducible mass, entropy, and maximally extractable energy as well as the Christodoulou-Ruffini mass formula. We find that these black hole quantities receive the QED corrections, in comparison with their counterparts in the Reissner-Nordstr\"om solution. The QED corrections show the screening effect on black hole electric charges and the paramagnetic effect on black hole magnetic charges. As a result, the black hole horizon area, irreducible mass, and entropy increase; however, the black hole total energy and maximally extractable energy decrease, compared with the Reissner-Nordstr\"om solution. We investigate the influence of the quadrupole moment of a rotating source on the motion of a test particle in the strong field regime. For this purpose the Hartle-Thorne metric, that is an approximate solution of vacuum Einstein field equations that describes the exterior of any slowly rotating, stationary and axially symmetric body, is used. The metric is given with accuracy up to the second order terms in the body's angular momentum, and first order terms in its quadrupole moment. We study static, spherically symmetric, self-gravitating systems minimally coupled to a scalar field with U(1) gauge symmetry: charged boson stars. We find numerical solutions to the EinsteinMaxwell equations coupled to the relativistic Klein-Gordon equation. It is shown that bound stable configurations exist only for values of the coupling constant less than or equal to a certain critical value. The metric coefficients and the relevant physical quantities such as the total mass and charge, turn out to be in general bound functions of the radial coordinate, reaching their maximum values at a critical value of the scalar field at the origin. We discuss the stability problem both from the quantitative and qualitative point of view. Taking properly into account the electromagnetic contribution to the total mass, the stability issue is faced also following an indication of the binding energy per particle, verifying then the existence of configurations having positive binding energy: objects apparently bound can be unstable against small perturbations, in full analogy with what observed in the mass-radius relation of neutron stars., Comment: 22 pages, 19 figures, 6 tables

It has been shown recently that taking into account strong, weak, electromagnetic, and gravitational interactions, and fulfilling the global charge neutrality of the system, a transition layer will happen between the core and crust of neutron stars, at the nuclear saturation density. We use relativistic mean field theory together with the Thomas-Fermi approximation to study the detailed structure of this transition layer and calculate its surface and Coulomb energy. We find that the surface tension is proportional to a power-law function of the baryon number density in the core bulk region. We also analyze the influence of the electron component and the gravitational field on the structure of the transition layer and the value of the surface tension to compare and contrast with known phenomenological results in nuclear physics. Based on the above results we study the instability against Bohr-Wheeler surface deformations in the case of neutron stars obeying global charge neutrality. Assuming the core-crust transition at nuclear density $\rho_{core}\approx 2.7 * 10^{14}$ g cm$^{-3}$, we find that the instability sets the upper limit to the crust density, $\rho_{crust}^{crit}\approx 1.2 * 10^{14}$ g cm$^{-3}$. This result implies a nonzero lower limit to the maximum electric field of the core-crust transition surface and makes inaccessible a limit of quasilocal charge neutrality in the limit $\rho_{crust}=\rho_{core}$. The general framework presented here can be also applied to study the stability of sharp phase transitions in hybrid stars as well as in strange stars, both bare and with outer crust. We present a detailed analysis of the orbital circular motion of electrically neutral test particles on the equatorial plane of the Kerr-Newman spacetime. Many details of the motion in the cases of black hole and naked singularity sources are pointed out. We identify four different types of orbital regions, which depend on the properties of the orbital angular momentum, and define four different kinds of naked singularities, according to the values of the charge-to-mass ratio of the source. It is shown that the presence of a particular type of counter-rotating test particles is sufficient to uniquely identify naked singularities. We study the process of energy conversion from overcritical electric field into electron-positron-photon plasma. We solve numerically Vlasov-Boltzmann equations for pairs and photons assuming the system to be homogeneous and anisotropic. All the 2-particle QED interactions between pairs and photons are described by collision terms. We evidence several epochs of this energy conversion, each of them associated to a specific physical process. Firstly pair creation occurs, secondly back reaction results in plasma oscillations. Thirdly photons are produced by electron-positron annihilation. Finally particle interactions lead to completely equilibrated thermal electron-positron-photon plasma.

We adopt a simplified model describing the collapse of a spherical thin-shell capacitor to give an analytical description how gravitational energy is converted to both kinetic and electric energies in the gravitational collapse. It is shown that (i) averaged kinetic and electric energies are the same order, about an half of gravitational energy of spherical thin-shell capacitor in the collapse; (ii) caused by radiating and rebuilding electric energy, the gravitational collapse undergoes a sequence of "on and off" hopping steps in the microscopic Compton scale. Although the collapse process is still continuous in terms of macroscopic scales, it is slowed down as the kinetic energy is reduced and collapsing time is about an order of magnitude larger than that of the collapse process eliminating electric processes., Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures, the version to appear in Phys. Context: GRB110709B is the first source for which Swift BAT triggered twice, with a time separation of ~10 min. The first emission (Ep. 1) goes from 40s before the 1{\deg} trigger up to 60s after it. The second (Ep. 2) goes from 35s before the 2{\deg} trigger to 100s after it.[...] Within the Induced Gravitational Collapse (IGC) model, we assume the progenitor to be a close binary system composed of a core of an evolved star and a Neutron Star (NS). The evolved star explodes as a Supernova (SN) and ejects material that is partially accreted by the NS. We identify this process with Ep. 1. The accretion process brings the NS over its critical mass, thus gravitationally collapsing to a BH. This process leads to the GRB emission, Ep. 2.[...] Aims: We analyze the spectra and time variability of Ep. 1 and 2 and compute the relevant parameters of the binary progenitor[...] in the IGC paradigm. Methods: We perform a time-resolved spectral analysis of Ep. 1 with a blackbody (BB) plus a power-law (PL) spectral model. We analyze Ep. 2 within the Fireshell model, identifying the Proper-GRB (P-GRB) and simulating the light curve and spectrum. We establish the redshift to be z=0.75 [...]. Results: We find for Ep. 1 a BB temperature following a broken PL with time, with the PL slopes at early and late times \alpha=0 and \beta=-4+/-2, respectively, and a break at t=41.21s. The total energy of Ep. 1 and 2 are E_{iso}^1=1.42x10^{53}erg and E_{iso}^2=2.43x10^{52}erg, respectively. We find at transparency a Lorentz factor \Gamma~173, laboratory radius of 6.04x10^{13}cm, P-GRB observed temperature kT_{P-GRB}=12.36keV, baryon load B=0.0057 and P-GRB energy E_{P-GRB}=3.44x10^{50}erg. We numerically investigate the temporal behavior and the structure of longitudinal momentum spectrum and the field polarity effect on pair production in pulsed electric fields in scalar quantum electrodynamics (QED). Using the evolution operator expressed in terms of the particle and antiparticle operators, we find the exact quantum states under the influence of electric pulses and measure the number of pairs of the Minkowski particle and antiparticle. The number of pairs, depending on the configuration of electric pulses, exhibits rich structures in the longitudinal momentum spectrum and undergoes diverse dynamical behaviors at the onset of the interaction but always either converges to a momentum-dependent constant or oscillates around a momentum-dependent time average after the completion of fields., Comment: RevTex 13 pages, 28 figures

We study some exact and approximate solutions of Einstein's equations that can be used to describe the gravitational field of astrophysical compact objects in the limiting case of slow rotation and slight deformation. First, we show that none of the standard models obtained by using Fock's method can be used as an interior source for the approximate exterior Kerr solution. We then use Fock's method to derive a generalized interior solution, and also an exterior solution that turns out to be equivalent to the exterior Hartle-Thorne approximate solution that, in turn, is equivalent to an approximate limiting case of the exact Quevedo-Mashhoon solution. As a result we obtain an analytic approximate solution that describes the interior and exterior gravitational field of a slowly rotating and slightly deformed astrophysical object., Comment: 15 pages, published in Phys. (Shortened) GRB080319B, with an isotropic energy E_{iso}=1.32x10^{54}erg, and GRB050904, with E_{iso}=1.04x10^{54}erg, offer the possibility of studying the spectral properties of the prompt radiation of two of the most energetic Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). This allows us to probe the validity of the fireshell model for GRBs beyond 10^{54}erg, well outside the energy range where it has been successfully tested up to now (10^{49}-10^{53}erg). We find that in the low energy region, the prompt emission spectra observed by Swift BAT reveals more power than theoretically predicted. The opportunities offered by these observations to improve the fireshell model are outlined. One of the distinguishing features of the fireshell model is that it relates the observed spectra to the spectrum in the comoving frame of the fireshell. Originally, a fully radiative condition and a comoving thermal spectrum were adopted. An additional power-law in the comoving thermal spectrum is required [...] in the fireshell model for GRBs 080319B and 050904. A new phenomenological parameter \alpha is correspondingly introduced in the model. We perform numerical simulations of the prompt emission in the Swift BAT bandpass by assuming different values of \alpha [...]. We compare them with the GRB080319B and GRB050904 observed time-resolved spectra, as well as with their time-integrated spectra and light curves. Although GRB080319B and GRB050904 are at very different redshifts (z=0.937 and z=6.29 respectively), a value of \alpha=-1.8 leads for both of them to a good agreement between the numerical simulations and the observed BAT light curves, time-resolved and time-integrated spectra. Such a modified spectrum is also consistent with the observations of previously analyzed less energetic GRBs and reasons for this additional agreement are given. It is understood that the Supernovae (SNe) associated to Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) are of type Ib/c. The temporal coincidence of the GRB and the SN represents still a major enigma of Relativistic Astrophysics. We elaborate here, from the earlier paradigm, that the concept of induced gravitational collapse is essential to explain the GRB-SN connection. The specific case of a close (orbital period <1 h) binary system composed of an evolved star with a Neutron Star (NS) companion is considered. We evaluate the accretion rate onto the NS of the material expelled from the explosion of the core progenitor as a type Ib/c SN, and give the explicit expression of the accreted mass as a function of the nature of the components and binary parameters. We show that the NS can reach, in a few seconds, the critical mass and consequently gravitationally collapses to a Black Hole. This gravitational collapse process leads to the emission of the GRB., Comment: ApJ Letters; in press

Based on the gravitational collapse time-scale is larger than the weak interaction time-scale at core densities $\rho > 10^{11} {gr}/ {cm}^{3}$, we approximately use the $\beta$-equilibrium condition and particle number conservations to calculate the number and energy densities of neutrino sphere in the process of gravitational core collapse towards the formation of a proto-neutron star. We find that at core densities $\rho_{dec} > 10^{12} {gr}/ {cm}^{3}$, the $\beta$-equilibrium condition cannot be satisfied consistently with charge, baryon and lepton number conservations, leading to the presence of excess neutrinos decoupling from the $\beta$-equilibrium. These excess neutrinos interact with nucleons and electrons via the neutral current channel only and their diffusion time is about $10^{-2}$ sec. The excess neutrino flux could play an important role in an Supernova explosion, provided the fraction of excess neutrinos over all neutrinos is at least one present., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

The recent progress in the understanding the physical nature of neutron star equilibrium configurations and the first observational evidence of a genuinely short gamma-ray burst, GRB 090227B, allows to give an estimate of the gravitational waves versus the X and Gamma-ray emission in a short gamma-ray burst., Comment: Version to appear in ApJ

The time-resolved spectral analysis of GRB090227B, made possible by the Fermi-GBM data, allows to identify in this source the missing link between the genuine short and long GRBs. Within the Fireshell model [...] we predict genuine short GRBs: bursts with the same inner engine of the long bursts but endowed with a severely low value of the Baryon load, B<~5x10^{-5}. A first energetically predominant emission occurs at the transparency of the e+e- plasma, the Proper-GRB (P-GRB), followed by a softer emission, the extended afterglow. The typical separation between the two emissions is expected to be [...] 10^{-3}-10^{-2}s. We identify the P-GRB [...] in the first 96ms of emission, where a thermal component with [...] kT=(517+/-28)keV and a flux comparable with the non thermal part of the spectrum is observed. This non thermal component as well as the subsequent emission, where there is no evidence for a thermal spectrum, is identified with the extended afterglow. We deduce a theoretical cosmological redshift z=1.61+/-0.14. We then derive the total energy E^{tot}_{e+e-}=(2.83+/-0.15)x10^{53}erg, [...] B=(4.13+/-0.05)x10^{-5}, the Lorentz factor at transparency \Gamma_tr=(1.44+/-0.01)x10^4, and the intrinsic duration \Delta t'~0.35s. We also determine the average density of the CircumBurst Medium (CBM), =(1.90+/-0.20)x10^{-5} #/cm^3. There is no evidence of beaming in the system. In view of the energetics and of the Baryon load of the source, as well as of the low interstellar medium and of the intrinsic time scale of the signal, we identify the GRB progenitor as a binary neutron star. From the recent progress in the theory of neutron stars, we obtain masses of the stars m_1=m_2=1.34M_Sun and their corresponding radii R_1=R_2=12.24km and thickness of their crusts ~0.47km, consistent with the above values of the Baryon load, of the energetics and of the time duration of the event., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, new version with some updated references, matching the one actually appeared on ApJ

Electron-positron plasma is believed to play imporant role both in the early Universe and in sources of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). We focus on analogy and difference between physical conditions of electron-positron plasma in the early Universe and in sources of GRBs. We discuss a) dynamical differences, namely thermal acceleration of the outflow in GRB sources vs cosmological deceleration; b) nuclear composition differences as synthesis of light elements in the early Universe and possible destruction of heavy elements in GRB plasma; c) different physical conditions during last scattering of photons by electrons. Only during the acceleration phase of the optically thick electron-positron plasma comoving observer may find it similar to the early Universe. This similarity breaks down during the coasting phase. Reprocessing of nuclear abundances may likely take place in GRB sources. Heavy nuclear elements are then destroyed, resulting mainly in protons with small admixture of helium. Unlike the primordial plasma which recombines to form neutral hydrogen, and emits the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation, GRB plasma does not cool down enough to recombine., Comment: Matched to the published version

The properties of uniformly rotating white dwarfs (RWDs) are analyzed within the framework of general relativity. Hartle's formalism is applied to construct the internal and external solutions to the Einstein equations. The WD matter is described by the relativistic Feynman-Metropolis-Teller equation of state which generalizes the Salpeter's one by taking into account the finite size of the nuclei, the Coulomb interactions as well as electroweak equilibrium in a self-consistent relativistic fashion. The mass $M$, radius $R$, angular momentum $J$, eccentricity $\epsilon$, and quadrupole moment $Q$ of RWDs are calculated as a function of the central density $\rho_c$ and rotation angular velocity $\Omega$. We construct the region of stability of RWDs ($J$-$M$ plane) taking into account the mass-shedding limit, inverse $\beta$-decay instability, and the boundary established by the turning-points of constant $J$ sequences which separates stable from secularly unstable configurations. We found the minimum rotation periods $\sim 0.3$, 0.5, 0.7 and 2.2 seconds and maximum masses $\sim 1.500$, 1.474, 1.467, 1.202 $M_\odot$ for $^{4}$He, $^{12}$C, $^{16}$O, and $^{56}$Fe WDs respectively. By using the turning-point method we found that RWDs can indeed be axisymmetrically unstable and we give the range of WD parameters where it occurs. We also construct constant rest-mass evolution tracks of RWDs at fixed chemical composition and show that, by loosing angular momentum, sub-Chandrasekhar RWDs (mass smaller than maximum static one) can experience both spin-up and spin-down epochs depending on their initial mass and rotation period while, super-Chandrasekhar RWDs (mass larger than maximum static one), only spin-up., Comment: The Astrophysical Journal; in press

We formulate the equations of equilibrium of neutron stars taking into account strong, weak, electromagnetic, and gravitational interactions within the framework of general relativity. The nuclear interactions are described by the exchange of the sigma, omega, and rho virtual mesons. The equilibrium conditions are given by our recently developed theoretical framework based on the Einstein-Maxwell-Thomas-Fermi equations along with the constancy of the general relativistic Fermi energies of particles, the "Klein potentials", throughout the configuration. The equations are solved numerically in the case of zero temperatures and for selected parametrization of the nuclear models. The solutions lead to a new structure of the star: a positively charged core at supranuclear densities surrounded by an electronic distribution of thickness $\sim \hbar/(m_e c)$ of opposite charge, as well as a neutral crust at lower densities. Inside the core there is a Coulomb potential well of depth $\sim m_\pi c^2/e$. The constancy of the Klein potentials in the transition from the core to the crust, impose the presence of an overcritical electric field $\sim (m_\pi/m_e)^2 E_c$, the critical field being $E_c=m^2_e c^3/(e \hbar)$. The electron chemical potential and the density decrease, in the boundary interface, until values $\mu^{\rm crust}_e < \mu^{\rm core}_e$ and $\rho_{\rm crust}<\rho_{\rm core}$. For each central density, an entire family of core-crust interface boundaries and, correspondingly, an entire family of crusts with different mass and thickness, exist. The configuration with $\rho_{\rm crust}=\rho_{\rm drip}\sim 4.3\times 10^{11}$ g/cm$^3$ separates neutron stars with and without inner crust. We present here the novel neutron star mass-radius for the case $\rho_{\rm crust}=\rho_{\rm drip}$ and compare and contrast it with the one obtained from the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff treatment., Comment: Accepted for publication in Nuclear Physics A

Recent observations of the late ($t=10^8$--$10^9$ s) emission of supernovae (SNe) associated to GRBs (GRB-SN) show a distinctive emission in the X-ray regime consistent with temperatures $10^7$--$10^8$ K. Similar features have been also observed in the two Type Ic SNe SN 2002ap and SN 1994I that are not associated to GRBs. We advance the possibility that the late X-ray emission observed in GRB-SN and in isolated SN is associated to a hot neutron star (NS) just formed in the SN event, here defined as a neo-NS. We discuss the thermal evolution of neo-NS in the age regime that spans from $\sim 1$ minute (just after the proto-NS phase) up to ages <10-100 yr. We examine the key factor governing the neo-NS cooling emphasizing on the neutrino emission. A phenomenological heating source and new boundary conditions are introduced to mimic the high-temperature atmosphere of young NSs. We match the neo-NS luminosity to the late X-ray emission of the GRB-SN events URCA-1 in GRB980425-SN1998bw, URCA-2 in GRB030329-SN2003dh, and URCA-3 in GRB031203-SN2003lw. By calibrating our additional heating source at early times to $\sim 10^{12}$--$10^{15}$ erg/g/s, we find a striking agreement of the luminosity obtained from the cooling of neo-NSs with the late ($t=10^{8}$--$10^{9}$ s) X-ray emission observed in GRB-SN. It is therefore appropriate to revise the boundary conditions used in the cooling theory of NSs, to match the proper conditions of the atmosphere at young ages. Additional heating processes that are still not studied within this context, such as e+e- pair creation by overcritical fields and nuclear fusion and fission energy release, might also take place under such conditions and deserve further analysis. Observation of GRB-SN has shown the possibility of witnessing the thermal evolution of neo-NSs.
