Using Parker Solar Probe data from orbits 8 through 17, we examine fluctuation amplitudes throughout the critical region where the solar wind flow speed approaches and then exceeds the Alfv\'en wave speed, taking account of various exigencies of the plasma data. In contrast to WKB theory for non-interacting Alfv\'en waves streaming away from the Sun, the magnetic and kinetic fluctuation energies per unit volume are not monotonically decreasing. Instead, there is clear violation of conservation of standard WKB wave action, which is consistent with previous indications of strong in-situ fluctuation energy input in the solar wind near the Alfv\'en critical region. This points to strong violations of WKB theory due to nonlinearity (turbulence) and major energy input near the critical region, which we interpret as likely due to driving by large-scale coronal shear flows.

A technique has recently been developed for tracking short-term spectral variations in Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) using data from a single neutron monitor (NM), by collecting histograms of the time delay between successive neutron counts and extracting the leader fraction $L$ as a proxy of the spectral index. Here we analyze $L$ from four Antarctic NMs during 2015 March to 2023 September. We have calibrated $L$ from the South Pole NM with respect to a daily spectral index determined from published data of GCR proton fluxes during 2015--2019 from the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) aboard the International Space Station. Our results demonstrate a robust correlation between the leader fraction and the spectral index fit over the rigidity range 2.97--16.6 GV for AMS-02 data, with uncertainty 0.018 in the daily spectral index as inferred from $L$. In addition to the 11-year solar activity cycle, a wavelet analysis confirms a 27-day periodicity in the GCR flux and spectral index corresponding to solar rotation, especially near sunspot minimum, while the flux occasionally exhibited a strong harmonic at 13.5 days, and that the magnetic field component along a nominal Parker spiral (i.e., the magnetic sector structure) is a strong determinant of such spectral and flux variations, with the solar wind speed exerting an additional, nearly rigidity-independent influence on flux variations. The transition from subAlfv\'enic to superAlfv\'enic flow in the solar atmosphere is examined by means of Parker Solar Probe (PSP) measurements during solar encounters 8 to 14. Around 220 subAlfv\'enic periods with a duration $\ge$ 10 minutes are identified. The distribution of their durations, heliocentric distances, and Alfv\'en Mach number are analyzed and compared with a global magnetohydrodynamic model of the solar corona and wind, which includes turbulence effects. The results are consistent with a patchy and fragmented morphology, and suggestive of a turbulent Alfv\'en zone within which the transition from subAlfv\'enic to superAlfv\'enic flow occurs over an extended range of helioradii. These results inform and establish context for detailed analyses of subAlfv\'enic coronal plasma that are expected to emerge from PSP's final mission phase, as well as for NASA's planned PUNCH mission.

Modeling of time profiles of solar energetic particle (SEP) observations often considers transport along a large-scale magnetic field with a fixed path length from the source to the observer. Here we point out that variability in the turbulent field line path length can affect the fits to SEP data and the inferred mean free path and injection profile. To explore such variability, we perform Monte Carlo simulations in representations of homogeneous 2D MHD + slab turbulence adapted to spherical geometry and trace trajectories of field lines and full particle orbits, considering proton injection from a narrow or wide angular region near the Sun, corresponding to an impulsive or gradual solar event, respectively. We analyze our simulation results in terms of field line and particle path length statistics for $1^\circ\times 1^\circ$ pixels in heliolatitude and heliolongitude at 0.35 and 1 AU from the Sun, for different values of the turbulence amplitude $b/B_0$ and turbulence geometry as expressed by the slab fraction $f_s$. Maps of the most probable path lengths of field lines and particles at each pixel exhibit systematic patterns that reflect the fluctuation amplitudes experienced by the field lines, which in turn relate to the local topology of 2D turbulence. Alfv\'enicity is a well-known property, common in the solar wind, characterized by a high correlation between magnetic and velocity fluctuations. Data from the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) enable the study of this property closer to the Sun than ever before, as well as in sub-Alfv\'enic solar wind. We consider scale-dependent measures of Alfv\'enicity based on second-order functions of the magnetic and velocity increments as a function of time lag, including the normalized cross-helicity $\sigma_c$ and residual energy $\sigma_r$. Scale-dependent Alfv\'enicity is strongest for lags near the correlation scale and increases when moving closer to the Sun. We find that $\sigma_r$ typically remains close to the maximally negative value compatible with $\sigma_c$. We did not observe significant changes in measures of Alfv\'enicity between sub-Alfv\'enic and super-Alfv\'enic wind. During most times, the solar wind was highly Alfv\'enic; however, lower Alfv\'enicity was observed when PSP approached the heliospheric current sheet or other magnetic structures with sudden changes in the radial magnetic field, non-unidirectional strahl electron pitch angle distributions, and strong electron density contrasts. These results are consistent with a picture in which Alfv\'enic fluctuations generated near the photosphere transport outward forming highly Alfv\'enic states in the young solar wind and subsequent interactions with large scale structures and gradients leads to weaker Alfv\'enicity, as commonly observed at larger heliocentric distances., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

The statistics of the magnetic field line separation provide insight into how a bundle of field lines spreads out and the dispersion of non-thermal particles in a turbulent environment, which underlies various astrophysical phenomena. Its diffusive character depends on the distance along the field line, the initial separation, and the characteristics of the magnetic turbulence. This work considers the separation of two magnetic field lines in general transverse turbulence in terms of the magnetic power spectrum in three-dimensional wavenumber space. We apply non-perturbative methods using Corrsin's hypothesis and assume random ballistic decorrelation to calculate the ensemble average field line separation for general transverse magnetic turbulence. For 2D+slab power spectra, our analytic formulae and computer simulations give similar results, especially at low slab fraction. Our analytical expression also demonstrates several features of field line separation that are verified by computer simulations.

Space plasmas are three-dimensional dynamic entities. Except under very special circumstances, their structure in space and their behavior in time are not related in any simple way. Therefore, single spacecraft in situ measurements cannot unambiguously unravel the full space-time structure of the heliospheric plasmas of interest in the inner heliosphere, in the Geospace environment, or the outer heliosphere. This shortcoming leaves numerous central questions incompletely answered. Deficiencies remain in at least two important subjects, Space Weather and fundamental plasma turbulence theory, due to a lack of a more complete understanding of the space-time structure of dynamic plasmas. Only with multispacecraft measurements over suitable spans of spatial separation and temporal duration can these ambiguities be resolved. We note that these characterizations apply to turbulence across a wide range of scales, and also equally well to shocks, flux ropes, magnetic clouds, current sheets, stream interactions, etc. In the following, we will describe the basic requirements for resolving space-time structure in general, using turbulence' as both an example and a principal target or study. We perform 2.5D particle-in-cell simulations of decaying turbulence in the presence of a guide (out-of-plane) background magnetic field. The fluctuating magnetic field initially consists of Fourier modes at low wavenumbers (long wavelengths). With time, the electromagnetic energy is converted to plasma kinetic energy (bulk flow+thermal energy) at the rate per unit volume of ${\pp J}\cdot{\pp E}$ for current density ${\pp J}$ and electric field ${\pp E}$. Such decaying turbulence is well known to evolve toward a state with strongly intermittent plasma current. Here we decompose the electric field into components that are irrotational, ${\pp E}_{\rm ir}$, and solenoidal (divergence-free), ${\pp E}_{\rm so}$. ${\pp E}_{\rm ir}$ is associated with charge separation, and ${\pp J}\cdot{\pp E}_{\rm ir}$ is a rate of energy transfer between ions and electrons with little net change in plasma kinetic energy. Therefore, the net rate of conversion of electromagnetic energy to plasma kinetic energy is strongly dominated by ${\pp J}\cdot{\pp E}_{\rm so}$, and for a strong guide magnetic field, this mainly involves the component ${\pp E}_{\rm so,\parallel}$ parallel to the total magnetic field ${\pp B}$. We examine various indicators of the spatial distribution of the energy transfer rate {\bf J$_\parallel\cdot$E$_{so,\parallel}$}, which relates to magnetic reconnection, the best of which are 1) the ratio of the out-of-plane electric field to the in-plane magnetic field, 2) the out-of-plane component of the non-ideal electric field, and 3) the magnitude of the estimate of current helicity.

The Parker Solar Probe (PSP) spacecraft is performing the first in situ exploration of the solar wind within 0.2 au of the Sun. Initial observations confirmed the Alfv\'enic nature of aligned fluctuations of the magnetic field B and velocity V in solar wind plasma close to the Sun, in domains of nearly constant magnetic field magnitude $|{\bf B}|$, i.e., approximate magnetic pressure balance. Such domains are interrupted by particularly strong fluctuations, including but not limited to radial field (polarity) reversals, known as switchbacks. It has been proposed that nonlinear Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities form near magnetic boundaries in the nascent solar wind leading to extensive shear-driven dynamics, strong turbulent fluctuations including switchbacks, and mixing layers that involve domains of approximate magnetic pressure balance. In this work we identify and analyze various aspects of such domains using data from the first five PSP solar encounters. The filling fraction of domains, a measure of Alfv\'enicity, varies from median values of 90% within 0.2 au to 38% outside 0.9 au, with strong fluctuations. We find an inverse association between the mean domain duration and plasma $\beta$. We examine whether the mean domain duration is also related to the crossing time of spatial structures frozen into the solar wind flow for extreme cases of the aspect ratio. Our results are inconsistent with long, thin domains aligned along the radial or Parker spiral direction, and compatible with isotropic domains, which is consistent with prior observations of isotropic density fluctuations or ``flocculae'' in the solar wind., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted by the Astrophysical Journal

The random walk of magnetic field lines is an important ingredient in understanding how the connectivity of the magnetic field affects the spatial transport and diffusion of charged particles. As solar energetic particles (SEPs) propagate away from near-solar sources, they interact with the fluctuating magnetic field, which modifies their distributions. We develop a formalism in which the differential equation describing the field line random walk contains both effects due to localized magnetic displacements and a non-stochastic contribution from the large-scale expansion. We use this formalism together with a global magnetohydrodynamic simulation of the inner-heliospheric solar wind, which includes a turbulence transport model, to estimate the diffusive spreading of magnetic field lines that originate in different regions of the solar atmosphere. We first use this model to quantify field line spreading at 1 au, starting from a localized solar source region, and find rms angular spreads of about 20{\deg} - 60{\deg}. In the second instance, we use the model to estimate the size of the source regions from which field lines observed at 1 au may have originated, thus quantifying the uncertainty in calculations of magnetic connectivity; the angular uncertainty is estimated to be about 20{\deg}. Finally, we estimate the filamentation distance, i.e., the heliocentric distance up to which field lines originating in magnetic islands can remain strongly trapped in filamentary structures. We emphasize the key role of slab-like fluctuations in the transition from filamentary to more diffusive transport at greater heliocentric distances.

Since the science white paper of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) published on arXiv in 2019 [e-Print: 1905.02773 (astro-ph.HE)], LHAASO has completed the transition from a project to an operational gamma-ray astronomical observatory LHAASO is a new generation multi-component facility located in Daocheng, Sichuan province of China, at an altitude of 4410 meters. It aims at measuring with unprecedented sensitivity the spectrum, composition, and anisotropy of cosmic rays in the energy range between 10$^{12}$ and 10$^{18}$~eV, and acting simultaneously as a wide aperture (one stereoradiant) continuously operating gamma-ray telescope in the energy range between 10$^{11}$ and $10^{15}$~eV with the designed sensitivity of 1.3\% of the Crab Unit (CU) above 100 TeV. LHAASO's capability of measuring simultaneously different shower components (electrons, muons, and Cherenkov/fluorescence light), will allow it to investigate the origin, acceleration, and propagation of CR through measurement of the energy spectrum, elemental composition, and anisotropy with unprecedented resolution. The remarkable sensitivity of LHAASO will play a key role in CR physics and gamma-ray astronomy for a general and comprehensive exploration of the high energy universe and will allow important studies of fundamental physics (such as indirect dark matter search, Lorentz invariance violation, quantum gravity) and solar and heliospheric physics. This paper briefly reviews a number of fundamental measurements that need to be made in order to characterize turbulence in space plasmas such as the solar wind. It has long been known that many of these quantities require simultaneous multipoint measurements to attain a proper characterization that would reveal the fundamental physics of plasma turbulence. The solar wind is an ideal plasma for such an investigation, and it now appears to be technologically feasible to carry out such an investigation, following the pioneering Cluster and MMS missions. Quantities that need to be measured using multipoint measurements include the two-point, two-time second correlation function of velocity, magnetic field and density, and higher order statistical objects such as third and fourth order structure functions. Some details of these requirements are given here, with a eye towards achieving closure on fundamental questions regarding the cascade rate, spectral anisotropy, characteristic coherent structures, intermittency, and dissipation mechanisms that describe plasma turbuelence, as well as its variability with plasma parameters in the solar wind. The motivation for this discussion is the current planning for a proposed Helioswarm mission that would be designed to make these measurements,leading to breakthrough understanding of the physics of space and astrophysical turbulence., Comment: White paper submitted to the PLASMA 2020 Decadal Survey Committee

We present 45 ground-based photometric observations of the K2-22 system collected between December 2016 and May 2017, which we use to investigate the evolution of the transit of the disintegrating planet K2-22b. Last observed in early 2015, in these new observations we recover the transit at multiple epochs and measure a typical depth of <1.5%. We find that the distribution of our measured transit depths is comparable to the range of depths measured in observations from 2014 and 2015. These new observations also support ongoing variability in the K2-22b transit shape and time, although the overall shallowness of the transit makes a detailed analysis of these transit parameters difficult. We find no strong evidence of wavelength-dependent transit depths for epochs where we have simultaneous coverage at multiple wavelengths, although our stacked Las Cumbres Observatory data collected over days-to-months timescales are suggestive of a deeper transit at blue wavelengths. We encourage continued high-precision photometric and spectroscopic monitoring of this system in order to further constrain the evolution timescale and to aid comparative studies with the other few known disintegrating planets., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

We use a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulation of the solar wind to calculate cosmic ray diffusion coefficients throughout the inner heliosphere ($2~R_\odot - 3$ AU). The simulation resolves large-scale solar wind flow, which is coupled to small-scale fluctuations through a turbulence model. Simulation results specify background solar wind fields and turbulence parameters, which are used to compute diffusion coefficients and study their behavior in the inner heliosphere. The parallel mean free path is evaluated using quasi-linear theory, while the perpendicular mean free path is determined by non-linear guiding center theory with the random ballistic interpretation. Several runs examine varying turbulent energy and different solar source dipole tilts. We find that for most of the inner heliosphere, the radial mean free path (mfp) is dominated by diffusion parallel to the mean magnetic field; the parallel mfp remains at least an order of magnitude larger than the perpendicular mfp, except in the heliospheric current sheet, where the perpendicular mfp may be a few times larger than the parallel mfp; in the ecliptic region, the perpendicular mfp may influence the radial mfp at heliocentric distances larger than 1.5 AU; our estimations of the parallel mfp in the ecliptic region at 1 AU agree well with the Palmer "consensus" range of $0.08 - 0.3$ AU; solar activity increases perpendicular diffusion and reduces parallel diffusion; the parallel mfp varies with rigidity $(P)$ as $P^{.33}$, and the perpendicular mfp is weakly dependent on $P$; the mfps are weakly influenced by the choice of long wavelength power spectra.

The investigation of the diffusive transport of charged particles in a turbulent magnetic field remains a subject of considerable interest. Research has most frequently concentrated on determining the diffusion coefficient in the presence of a mean magnetic field. Here we consider diffusion of charged particles in fully three-dimensional isotropic turbulent magnetic fields with no mean field, which may be pertinent to many astrophysical situations. We identify different ranges of particle energy depending upon the ratio of the Larmor radius of the charged particle to the characteristic outer length scale of the turbulence. Two different theoretical models are proposed to calculate the diffusion coefficient, each applicable to a distinct range of particle energies. The theoretical results are compared with those from computer simulations, showing good agreement.

We present a theory and numerical evidence for the existence of a previously unexplored in-plane electric field in collisionless asymmetric magnetic reconnection. This electric field, dubbed the "Larmor electric field," is associated with finite Larmor radius effects and is distinct from the known Hall electric field. Potentially, it could be an important indicator for the upcoming Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission to locate reconnection sites as we expect it to appear on the magnetospheric side, pointing Earthward, at the dayside magnetopause reconnection site., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Physical Review Letters

We examine the accuracy of a common technique for estimating the start time of solar energetic particle injection based on a linear fit to the observed onset time versus 1/(particle velocity). This is based on a concept that the first arriving particles move directly along the magnetic field with no scattering. We check this by performing numerical simulations of the transport of solar protons between 2 and 2000 MeV from the Sun to the Earth, for several assumptions regarding interplanetary scattering and the duration of particle injection, and analyzing the results using the inverse velocity fit. We find that in most cases, the onset times align close to a straight line as a function of inverse velocity. Despite this, the estimated injection time can be in error by several minutes. Also, the estimated path length can deviate greatly from the actual path length along the interplanetary magnetic field. The major difference between the estimated and actual path lengths implies that the first arriving particles cannot be viewed as moving directly along the interplanetary magnetic field., Comment: 19 pages, 3 Postscript figures.
