Magnetic mesoporous silica (MS) nanocomposites provide the possibility of generating multi-functional objects for application in different technological areas. This paper focuses on the magnetic properties of nanocomposites constituted by spinel iron oxide nanoparticles (magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), < D > ≈ 8–9 nm) embedded in an MS matrix. The mesoporous structure of the silica matrix and the presence of the nanoparticles inside clearly emerge from transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements. Low temperature (5 K) field-dependent magnetization measurements reveal saturation magnetization (MS) close to bulk value (MS bulk ∼ 90 emu g−1) for both MNPs and MNP/MS nanocomposites, indicating that the presence of silica does not affect the magnetic features of the single MNPs. Moreover, the dependence of the remanent magnetization on field (i.e. δM plots) at low temperature has shown a small but evident decrease of interaction in an MNP/MS sample with respect to MNP samples A m2 Kg–1. In the attempt of satisfying the quest for new antifouling products tailored for applications on Cultural Heritage, we have synthesized and characterized two different silica nanosystems. The first consists of core-shell nanocapsules and the second one of mesostructured nanoparticles. Both systems have been successfully loaded in situ with the commercial biocide 2-mercaptobenzothizole (MBT). The synthesis procedure and particles characterization measurements, as far as their dimensions and superficial properties, loading capability, and release rate in aqueous solution, are reported. We stress that both particles have the dimensions required to avoid undesired light scattering once dispersed on the artefact surface. [Display omitted] • An undated multi-colour woodcut is investigated by a multi-technique approach. • Paper preparation and ink palette are identified by EDXRF and μ-Raman. • Archaeometric analyses date the artwork at the beginning of 20th century. In this work, a multi-colour woodcut on paper, representing a Minnesanger (love poet) who declares his love to a young lady, was studied from both historical and archaeometric points of view. In the absence of historical or documentary information, non-invasive imaging, EDXRF, and µ-Raman spectroscopies were employed, in order to date this artefact. The woodcut Minnesang is known in a single and so-far undescribed copy and shows the influence of German Renaissance colour woodcuts as well as Arras 15th century tapestries. Nevertheless, according to our investigations, it does not date back to that period. In fact, the presence of Prussian blue and chrome yellow and, most of all, the finding of two organic pigments, namely PR53:1 and PR81, suggest to date the artwork at the beginning of the 20th century, in the context of a neo-Gothic Arts and Crafts revival. Objectives: To identify diabetes-related characteristics of individuals at different stages of readiness to change to healthy, low-fat eating.Research Design and Methods: Stage-based differences in demographic, eating-related, health care utilization, and psychosocial factors were examined in a sample of 768 overweight (BMI >27 kg/m(2)) individuals with diabetes enrolled in a randomized behavioral intervention trial.Results: Stage-based differences occurred for type 1 diabetic participants on percent of calories from fat and number of daily vegetable servings. For type 2 diabetic participants, sex, disease-specific quality of life, percent calories from fat, and number of daily vegetables servings differed across stages. Those in action stages were more likely to be female and have a better quality of life and healthier eating habits. Type 2 diabetic insulin-requiring participants in action stages were more likely to be married. Social support was highest for those in the contemplation stage and lowest for those in the action stage. Type 2 diabetic participants on pills in the action stages were older, had a lower BMI, ate more fruit, were nonsmokers, recently attended diabetes education, had a better quality of life and social support, and had less stress. One anomalous finding for type 2 diabetic participants was that precontemplators scored similarly to those in action stages.Conclusions: These data validate the Transtheoretical Model, where those in the action stages displayed healthier eating. They also indicate that demographic and psychosocial factors may mediate readiness to change diet. Precontemplators were a heterogeneous group and may need individually tailored interventions. In this study, we examined cellular immune responses in the flesh fly, Sarcophaga bullata, when parasitized by the ectoparasitoid Nasonia vitripennis. In unparasitized, young pharate adults and third instar, wandering larvae of S. bullata, four main hemocyte types were identified by light microscopy: plasmatocytes, granular cells, oenocytoids, and pro-hemocytes. Parasitism of young pharate adults had a differential effect on host hemocytes; oenocytoids and pro-hemocytes appeared to be unaltered by parasitism, whereas adhesion and spreading behavior were completely inhibited in plasmatocytes and granular cells by 60 min after oviposition. The suppression of spreading behavior in granular cells lasted the duration of parasitism. Plasmatocytes were found to decline significantly during the first hour after parasitism and this drop was attributed to cell death. Melanization and clotting of host hemolymph did not occur in parasitized flies, or the onset of both events was retarded by several hours in comparison to unparasitized pharate adults. Hemocytes from envenomated flies were altered in nearly identical fashion to that observed for natural parasitism; the total number of circulating hemocytes declined sharply by 60 min post-envenomation, the number of plasmatocytes declined but not granular cells, and the ability of plasmatocytes and granular cells to spread when cultured in vitro was abolished within 1 h. As with parasitized hosts, the decrease in plasmatocytes was due to cell death, and inhibition of spreading lasted until the host died. Isolated crude venom also blocked adhesion and spreading of these hemocyte types in vitro. Thus, it appears that maternally derived venom disrupts host immune responses almost immediately following oviposition and the inhibition is permanent. • FTIR and Raman spectroscopy investigation of the MBT confinement into two different silica nanosystems. • Evaluation of the chemical interaction of the MBT biocide with silica nanosystems and cationic surfactant molecules. In the last years, significant research efforts have been devoted to the reduction of the environmental impact of biocides and to the improvement of their effectiveness over time against degradation of stone artifacts. This work reports the spectroscopic characterization of two silica nanosystems, with different geometry and structure, loaded with a biologically-active compound, the 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), for controlled antifouling release on the surface of outdoor stone artefacts. We have combined FT-IR spectroscopy in ATR mode and Raman spectroscopy to investigate the biocide loading mechanism in both nanosystems from the physical and chemical point of view. These techniques demonstrate that the geometry of confinement influences the loading of the nanoparticles and their interaction with the confining medium, with possible consequences in the biocide release rate. In cultural heritage field, significant research efforts have been recently made to improve the efficacy of anti-vegetative treatments and to reduce the environmental impact caused by biocides high concentration. According to the pro-ecological approach, this work reports a novel approach based on the encapsulation/incorporation of environmentally-friendly biocides in different silica nanosystems in order to control the development of biological patinas on outdoor cultural heritage. Two different green biocides have been selected and tested in silica nanosystems: the zosteric acid sodium salt (ZS), a natural antifoulant compound produced by Zostera marina (eelgrass), and the usnic acid (UA), a secondary metabolite produced by some saxicolous lichens. ZS was previously successfully encapsulated but never entrapped in mesoporous silica; instead, UA is, for the first time, encapsulated and in situ entrapped into the silica nanosystems in order to control the release over time. Both silica nanosystems have been characterized as far as their dimensions and superficial properties and loading capability. The antifouling activity was assessed against microorganisms from biopatinas colonising the Aurelian Walls in Rome. Our results have shown that the two nanosystems have complementary properties, thus it is possible to tune the antifouling efficiency by combining the two in different proportions. STAR is the first italian App for smartphone and tablet entirely dedicated to the cultural astronomy sites in Rome. The user will be guided on a journey to discover mithraea, sundials and Astronomy related places of the Capital. In most cases, these sites are visited by millions of tourists for their historical and artistic value but their astronomical significance point of view is not valorise. Despite many ancient monuments also enclose a strong astronomical significance, linked for example to the original constructive purposes, this aspect is largely ignored by the general public. The aim of STAR is therefore offer the opportunity to discover an unexpected, original and evocative side of the city of Rome to a widest possible audience through an innovative technological support, simple and attractive, which STAR wants to be. This App aims to involve the foreign tourist as the Roman citizen rediscovering the city, the neophyte as the expert of this topic. With STAR it is possible to modulate the itinerary, to choose the number and type of sites to visit, depending on the time available, and the favorite way to reach the sites. Moreover, the user will have the opportunity to select the type of presentation of the site based on the desired level of detail. To add emotional impact to the experience, making more effective the communication of contents, the App allow to reveal the original appearance of the sites or bring to light hidden details using the virtual augmented reality. This tool also allows you to discover places otherwise not be visited because they are not easly accessible, in particular for those who are suffering from disabilities, with particular reference to mitrei for their underground nature. This work is part of a multi-disciplinary study aimed at creating the first scientific database to support the future authentication of paintings on the art market. In particular, five fake paintings attributed to the Italian painter Pippo Oriani (1909–1972) have been characterized. Since no scientific literature concerning the material composition used by the artist is available, the five paintings were studied with a multi-technique approach aiming at better understanding the forgery process. The obtained results can be used in the future as a first step to support the authentication of Oriani's artworks on the art market. In particular, it allows to evaluate the consistency of data obtained from future scientific investigations on Oriani's artwork with the forgery process reported in the present database. Non-invasive diagnostic tools, such as UV imaging, IR and IR-false colour photography, XRF, μ-Raman and FTIR spectroscopies have been used to fully characterize the fake paintings. The combination of these techniques led to obtaining useful information on the support preparation method, the pictorial materials, and the execution technique of the artist/forger(s). A wide range of inorganic pigments and organic dyes have been detected, together with the use of oil and wax as binders. The results revealed a strong similarity among the different paintings, thus supporting the idea that the forger(s) knew very well the original Oriani's pictorial technique. The detailed identification of all the materials used in the forgery process for Oriani's fake paintings will help to support the authentication of other ambiguous paintings in future cases. Although extensively studied, the exact nature of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), the most common tumors in AIDS patients worldwide, is still controversial. KS is a highly vascularised tumor, apparently induced by HHV8 infection of vascular precursors, endothelial cells, circulating endothelial and/or haematopoietic progenitors. Cell lines derived from KS biopsies show similar characteristics: a mixture of mesenchymal and vascular markers. Given the growing interest in cancer stem cells as a new perspective in cancer treatment, we decided to isolate and characterize the potential stem sub-populations in KS cultures and to study whether the interaction of these cells with the microenvironment may influence their tumorigenicity.Two KS cell lines (KS-IMM and SLK), cultured out of biopsy material from KS patients, were used to asses stemness capability of this tumor.KS cells were karyotypically characterized, analyzed by functional genomics with Affymetrix arrays and then grown in specific serum-free stem cell medium. Cell proliferation assay showed an anchorage-independent growth capability of KS and SLK cell lines forming spheroid structures. With increasing passages, these KS-derived spheroids showed an increase in proliferation potential and sphere forming efficiency.Surface expression markers on spheroids were evaluated through flow cytometry and compared to parental cell lines. Consistent increase in CD34 and CD326 and decrease in CD133 and CD144 were found in cells derived from KS-IMM spheroid compared to parental cells, while only ABCG2 is consistently decreased in SLK spheroids. Background and purpose: The aim of our study was to describe, by a case‐control and cross‐sectional design, the correlation between clinical impairment and age in Charcot‐Marie‐Tooth type 1A (CMT1A) patients. Methods: Seventy CMT1A patients and 70 sex‐ and age‐matched healthy controls were enrolled. Motor performance was assessed through the 10‐m walk test, the 6‐min walk test and the 9‐hole peg test of the dominant and non‐dominant side, and muscle strength was measured by using the Medical Research Council score. In the CMT1A group, disability and quality of life were evaluated using the Charcot‐Marie‐Tooth Neuropathy Score (CMTNS) and the Short Form 36 (SF‐36) questionnaire. Cross‐sectional relationships between age and all clinical measures were analyzed and differences in the slopes between cases and controls were calculated. The occurrence of a structural change in the age‐related progression of clinical measures was explored. Results: The deterioration of motor performance correlated with age in both groups with a greater slope in CMT1A patients than controls. The deterioration of CMTNS and SF‐36 correlated with age in the CMT1A group. The deterioration of all clinical measures with the exception of the SF‐36 questionnaire showed a structural change at the 50th year of age. The rate of deterioration was no different between patients and controls until 50 years of age, whereupon it became significantly greater in CMT1A patients. Conclusion: Our study supports that the disease progression in CMT1A patients is an age‐related process and the 50th year of age represents a critical moment after which the clinical decline becomes faster. Background: Myosin heavy chain 7 (MYH7)-related myopathies are emerging as an important group of muscle diseases of childhood and adulthood, with variable clinical and histopathological expression depending on the type and location of the mutation. Mutations in the head and neck domains are a well-established cause of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy whereas mutation in the distal regions have been associated with a range of skeletal myopathies with or without cardiac involvement, including Laing distal myopathy and Myosin storage myopathy. Recently the spectrum of clinical phenotypes associated with mutations in MYH7 has increased, blurring this scheme and adding further phenotypes to the list. A broader disease spectrum could lead to misdiagnosis of different congenital myopathies, neurogenic atrophy and other neuromuscular conditions.Results: As a result of a multicenter Italian study we collected clinical, histopathological and imaging data from a population of 21 cases from 15 families, carrying reported or novel mutations in MYH7. Patients displayed a variable phenotype including atypical pictures, as dropped head and bent spine, which cannot be classified in previously described groups. Half of the patients showed congenital or early infantile weakness with predominant distal weakness. Conversely, patients with later onset present prevalent proximal weakness. Seven patients were also affected by cardiomyopathy mostly in the form of non-compacted left ventricle. Muscle biopsy was consistent with minicores myopathy in numerous cases. Muscle MRI was meaningful in delineating a shared pattern of selective involvement of tibialis anterior muscles, with relative sparing of quadriceps.Conclusion: This work adds to the genotype-phenotype correlation of MYH7-relatedmyopathies confirming the complexity of the disorder. Summary: Background: The Glu167Lys (E167K) transmembrane 6 superfamily member 2 (TM6SF2) variant has been associated with liver steatosis, high alanine transaminase (ALT) levels and reduced plasma levels of liver‐derived triglyceride‐rich lipoproteins. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to investigate in a group of obese children the association among the 167K allele of TM6SF2 gene and ALT, cholesterol and triglycerides levels, and hepatic steatosis, and to evaluate the potential interaction between this variant and the I148M patatin like phospholipase 3 gene (PNPLA3) polymorphism on liver enzymes. Methods: We genotyped 1010 obese children for TM6SF2 E167K and PNPLA3 I148M polymorphisms. Anthropometrical and biochemical data were collected. Ultrasound imaging of the liver was performed. Results: The 167K allele showed an association with steatosis (P < 0.0001), higher ALT levels (P < 0.001) and lower total cholesterol (P < 0.00001), low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (P < 0.0001), triglycerides (P = 0.02) and non‐high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (P < 0.000001). The subjects homozygous for the PNPLA3 148M allele carrying the rare variant of TM6SF2 showed an odds ratio of 12.2 (confidence interval 3.8–39.6, P = 0.000001) to present hypertransaminasaemia compared with the remaining patients. Conclusion: Although the TMS6SF2 E167K variant predisposes the obese children to non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease, there is an association between this variant and lower levels of cardiovascular risk factors. Spasticity is a common disorder and a major cause of a long-term disability in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCs) is a potential tool to improve motor deficits in several neurological disease and, recently, it has been proposed as effective in decreasing spasticity after stroke. To assess whether anodal tDCS is effective in modulating lower limb spasticity in MS patients. We performed a single-centre randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled study to investigate efficacy of anodal vs sham tDCs in 20 relapsing-remitting MS patients. Ten patients received anodal tDCS stimulation to the primary sensorymotor cortex of the more affected side, 20 min for day, 5 days per week, for 2 weeks. Ten patients received sham tDCS stimulation. Spasticity was assessed by using the modified Ashworth scale (MAS) and the self-scoring MSSS-88 at baseline and at the end of protocol stimulation. No significant change in lower limb spasticity was observed for both anodal and sham tDCS stimulation. Anodal tDCS seems to be not effective in decreasing lower limb spasticity in MS patients. Fluid migration along faults can be highly complex and spatially variable, with the potential for channeled flow, accumulation in capped porous units, fault cross-flow, lateral migration along strike, or complete sealing. Extensional basin margins can be important for such migration, given the associated crustal thinning and decompression that takes place combined with potential geothermal or mantle gas sources. One such example is near the urban area of Rome, situated along the active extensional continental margin of the Tyrrhenian back arc basin and surrounded by Middle-Upper Pleistocene K-rich and arc-related volcanoes. Recent research activities in the area around Fiumicino, a town 25 km to the west of Rome, has highlighted the close spatial link between degassing CO 2 and the faults that provide the necessary vertical migration pathways. In particular, detailed soil gas and gas flux surveys have highlighted the release at surface of large volumes of asthenospheric mantle CO 2 in correspondence with normal faults observed in a new seismic reflection profile acquired along the Tiber River. Detailed reconstruction of the Pleistocene–Holocene stratigraphy of the area dates fault activity from 20,000 to 9000 years BP. It is proposed that the gas migrates preferentially along the cataclastic tectonic breccias of the faults until it encounters recent, unconsolidated sediments; porous units within this shallow stratigraphy act as temporary secondary traps for the leaking gas, with local gas release at the ground surface occurring where the sealing of the overlying aquitards has been compromised. Degassing and active faults confirm the extensional tectonics affecting the area and the geodynamic scenario of a mantle wedge beneath the western Apennines, associated with ongoing W-directed subduction. In the present paper, for the first time, non-invasive techniques have been employed to improve the knowledge of a Coronation of the Virgin dating back to 1560–70. This is an old master drawing by Giorgio Vasari, considered one of the major painters and art theoric of Italian late 16th Century. The adopted multi-technique approach, involving preliminary macroscopic and microscopic observations, and followed by X- ray fluorescence mapping (MA-XRF), μ-Raman, and Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses, along with the historical information, has allowed to identify the original materials and to understand the drawing's realization process. The results show that paper preparation has been realized by using a yellow mineral, namely goethite, in order to obtain a particular shade. Moreover, a proteinaceous component, likely animal gelatin, has been used as a binder for goethite or during the paper preparation process. Small white flakes, composed of lead white and massicot, have been randomly found on the surface of the drawing: the specific function and/or origin of these flakes is unknown. Finally, the use of black chalk for a preliminary sketch and iron gall ink for the final drawing has been observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: 3D geological models from multi-source data (cross-sections, geological maps, borehole logs and outcrops) are a critical tool to improve the interpretation of the spatial organization of subsurface structures that are not directly accessible. In this paper, we reconstruct the main geological structures and surfaces in three dimensions through the interpolation of closely and regularly spaced 2D seismic sections, constrained by wells data and surface geology. The methodology was applied in the Marche–Abruzzi sector of the Periadriatic basin, where the more external part of the Apennines fold-and-thrust belt is mostly buried under a syn- and post-orogenic, Plio–Pleistocene, siliciclastic sequence. The 3D model allowed us to correlate the main thrust fronts and related anticlines along strike, revealing a general ramp – flat – ramp trajectory characterizing the main structural trends. This geometric organization influences the sequence of thrust-system propagation and characterizes the evolution of syntectonic basins. The obtained 3D model points out several variation occurring along strike: i) main trends geometric relationships; ii) deformation chronology and iii) displacement distribution. In the northern sector, higher displacement and structural elevation are reached out by the Nereto–Bellante structure, whereas in the southern sector the Villadegna–Costiera Structure is the prevalent. All structures show a diachronic thrusts activity along strike, younger toward the north. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Thin films of bismuth vanadate (BiVO) are deposited through the solution combustion synthesis technique coupled with the dip-coating process. Thermal gravimetric analyis shows a total mass loss of 71 % besides the formation of the monoclinic phase, about 300 °C, which is also revealed by X-ray diffraction. UV-Vis optical absorption spectra show direct bandgap transition about 2.5 eV for films, in good agreement with semiconducting monoclinic phase. Scanning electron microscopic images reveal that thermal annealing time at 500 °C is a very important parameter to control the thickness and shape of the particles and yields an average thickness of about 800 nm for 10 dip-coated deposited layers, with round-shaped nanometric-sized particles, homogeneously distributed on the film surface. Photoelectrochemical degradation of methylene blue by a bismuth vanadate film deposited on fluor-doped tin oxide substrate shows up as a very efficient process. The first-order rate constant for the photoinduced process is about five times the rate constant for degradation in the dark, showing the capacity of the BiVO/fluorine-doped tin oxide film for electrochemical degradation, mainly in the presence of light. HCV genotypes 2- or 3-infected patients with a rapid virological response (RVR) to therapy with pegylated interferon and ribavirins who have a low viral load, noncirrhotic and nonobese may be considered for a shorter course of treatment. However, no studies have assessed host-viral factors associated with relapse in genotype 2 and 3 separately. Accordingly, we assessed whether 12 weeks of pegylated interferon and ribavirin was an optimized regimen for treatment of HCV genotype 2 and 3 with positive predictors of response. Power and sample size were a priori calculated and 96 consecutive chronic hepatitis C patients (53, genotype 2 and 43, genotype 3) without cirrhosis who were not obese and who achieved a RVR to therapy with peg-IFN-α-2a and ribavirin were enrolled. Fibrosis, steatosis, homeostatic model assessment-insulin resistance and HCV RNA were predefined variables to be evaluated in relapse. An intention-to-treat analysis was performed. SVR rates were 98% and 84% for genotype 2 and 3, respectively. Analysis of genotype 3 patients who had relapse showed a negative correlation with steatosis ( P < 0.0001) and HCV RNA ( P < 0.015). Multivariate analysis showed that steatosis was the independent predictor of relapse (OR, 0.988; 95% CI, 0.981-0.993; P < 0.001). Genotype 3 patients with steatosis had a relapse rate of 36.4% and 15.8% in those with high and low viral load, respectively, whereas there was no relapse in those without steatosis. In conclusion, a 12-week course of therapy is sufficient for patients without cirrhosis, not obese and infected with HCV genotype 2 achieve a RVR. This is not the case for genotype 3. Background Oxidative stress and increased inflammation have been reported to be increased in subjects with diabetes and to be involved in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular complications after myocardial infarction (MI). It is well recognized that red wine has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. We examined the effects of moderate red wine intake on echocardiographic parameters of functional cardiac outcome in addition to inflammatory cytokines and nitrotyrosine (oxidative stress marker), in subjects with diabetes after a first uncomplicated MI. Methods One hundred and fifteen subjects with diabetes who had sustained a first non-fatal MI were randomized to receive a moderate daily amount of red wine (intervention group) or not (control group). Echocardiographic parameters of ventricular dys-synchrony, circulating levels of nitrotyrosine, tumour necrosis factor- α (TNF- α ), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-18 (IL-18) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were investigated at baseline and 12 months after randomization. Results After 1 year of diet intervention, concentrations of nitrotyrosine ( P < 0.01), CRP ( P < 0.01), TNF- α ( P < 0.01), IL-6 ( P < 0.01) and IL-18 ( P < 0.01) were increased in the control group compared with the intervention group. In addition, myocardial performance index ( P < 0.02) was higher, and transmitral Doppler flow ( P < 0.05), pulmonary venous flow analysis ( P < 0.02) and ejection fraction ( P < 0.05) were lower in the control group, indicating ventricular dys-synchrony. The concentrations of nitrotyrosine, CRP, TNF- α and IL-6 were related to echocardiographic parameters of ventricular dys-synchrony. Conclusions In subjects with diabetes, red wine consumption, taken with meals, significantly reduces oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory cytokines as well as improving cardiac function after MI. Moderate red wine intake with meals may have a beneficial effect in the prevention of cardiovascular complications after MI in subjects with diabetes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The effect of a population's location on the landscape on genetic variation has been of interest to population genetics for more than half a century. However, most studies do not consider broadscale biogeography when interpreting genetic data. In this study, we propose an operational definition of a peripheral population, and then explore whether peripheral populations of Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis ) have less genetic variation than core populations at nine microsatellite loci. We show that peripheral populations of lynx have fewer mean numbers of alleles per population and lower expected heterozygosity. This is surprising, given the lynx's capacity to move long distances, but can be explained by the fact that peripheral populations often have smaller population sizes, limited opportunities for genetic exchange and may be disproportionately affected by ebbs and flows of species’ geographical range. Objective: This study compared diabetes Treatment As Usual (TAU) with Pathways To Change (PTC), an intervention developed from the Transtheoretical Model of Change (TTM), to determine whether the PTC intervention would result in greater readiness to change, greater increases in self-care, and improved diabetes control.Research Design and Methods: Participants were stratified by diabetes treatment and randomized to treatment with PTC or TAU as well as being randomized regarding receipt of free blood testing strips. The PTC consisted of stage-matched personalized assessment reports, self-help manuals, newsletters, and individual phone counseling designed to improve readiness for self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG), healthy eating, and/or smoking cessation. A total of 1029 individuals with type 1 and type 2 diabetes who were in one of three pre-action stages for either SMBG, healthy eating, or smoking were recruited.Results: For the SMBG intervention, 43.4% of those receiving PTC plus strips moved to an action stage, as well as 30.5% of those receiving PTC alone, 27.0% of those receiving TAU plus strips, and 18.4% of those receiving TAU alone (P < 0.001). For the healthy eating intervention, more participants who received PTC than TAU (32.5 vs. 25.8%) moved to action or maintenance (P < 0.001). For the smoking intervention, more participants receiving PTC (24.3%) than TAU (13.4%) moved to an action stage (P < 0.03). In intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis of those receiving the SMBG intervention, PTC resulted in a greater reduction of HbA(1c) than TAU, but this did not reach statistical significance. However, in those who moved to an action stage for the SMBG and healthy eating interventions, HbA(1c) was significantly reduced (P < 0 0.001). Individuals who received the healthy eating intervention decreased their percentage of calories from fat to a greater extent (35.2 vs. 36.1%, P = 0.004), increased servings of fruit per day (1.89 vs. 1.68, P = 0.016), and increased vegetable servings (2.24 vs. 2.06, P = 0.011) but did not decrease weight. However, weight loss for individuals who received the healthy eating intervention and who increased SMBG frequency as recommended was significantly greater, with a 0.26-kg loss in those who remained in a pre-action SMBG stage but a 1.78-kg loss in those performed SMBG as recommended (P Conclusions: This study demonstrates that this intervention has the potential of positively impacting the health of broad populations of individuals with diabetes, not just the minority who are ready for change. Smoking during pregnancy is hazardous as it poses numerous risks to both the mother and the unborn child. Formerly, interventions that were successful for White smokers were thought to be equally appropriate for all smokers. It is now acknowledged that there is a need to tailor interventions for distinct ethnic and cultural groups. This study was designed to identify variables that are associated with smoking status in a low-income sample of pregnant Latina and White women. Results indicate that Latinas had lower levels of addiction to cigarettes and were less likely to have partners who smoked than White women. Identifying differences in the characteristics of ethnically diverse pregnant smokers will assist in the development of interventions that are tailored for women who attend prenatal clinics. The identification of dyes from ancient textiles represents a challenging issue requiring high proficiency and versatility, that must be guided by the principles of non-destructiveness. The complexity of the dye/textile system influences both the choice of sampling and extraction procedures and the analytical methodology. For instance, in order to preserve both the fibre and the original chromophores on it, the extraction procedures commonly used for natural dyes have evolved in last few decades towards increasingly mild conditions. Along with this approach, the use of solid substrates for sampling has become prominent in several fields of Cultural Heritage diagnostics.With reference to these two aspects, the aim of this work is to combine gel substrates and a mild basic solution for the extraction of anthraquinone dyes (madder and cochineal) from wool textiles, in order to evaluate the versatility of the extraction procedure for different analytical techniques. Because of their wide use in the field of Conservation, agar and nanorestore gel substrates soaked in an ammonia-EDTA solution were tested. The dye-extracting substrates were then analysed with Raman and SERS spectroscopy, whilst the fraction re-extracted from them was examined with HPLC-HRMS. Finally, scanning electron microscopy was used to monitor the integrity of the wool after the extraction treatment with the ammonia-EDTA solution.HPLC-HRMS results show that the basic solution in both gels is effective for the dye extraction, and no alteration of wool fibres was evidenced by SEM-EDS. The Raman spectra give no information about the dyes, but only substrate signals are obtained. Conversely, SERS spectroscopy makes it possible to distinguish the two dyes, especially using the 633 nm laser on the agar substrate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
