In this study, the heterogeneous photosensitized oxidation treatment of winery effluents was optimized using chitosan carriers immobilized with Zn(II) Phthalocyanine tetrasulfonic acid. The influence of main operating parameters such as initial pH, aeration flow rate, photocatalyst load, and concentration of the photosensitizer used in the photocatalysts’ preparation was investigated. Results for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and phenolic content (TPh) removals are presented for each of the tests performed. Best reductions were obtained after 30 min of treatment in natural sunlight at an initial pH of 4.0 and an aeration flow of 2.8 L/min since it allowed reductions of 45% for COD and 73% for phenolic content (TPh). In addition, the possibility of reusing the photocatalysts during several cycles was also assessed, where an acidic initial pH allowed their reuse, being the only pH value studied where the leaching of the photosensitizer was not observed. In these conditions, the same photocatalysts were reused for six reaction cycles, and efficiency started to decrease after the third use. Thus, a greater mass and concentration of photosensitizer contributed to a superior reduction in organic matter. The results show that heterogeneous photosensitized oxidation using sunlight radiation as an energy source is an interesting approach for obtaining reusable water from winery effluents.

The demand for fresh water is increasing daily, requiring industries to take action to reduce the need for fresh water. Winemaking industries represent a massive hydric impact by combining the water consumed and the high volume of wastewater produced. The sun-driven photooxidation process has been widely employed in removing wastewater pollutants. This work employed four photosensitizers, Rose Bengal, AlPcS4, ZnPcS4, and TPP, for water reuse in cellars. A secondary effluent has been investigated as a water matrix. Of all the photosensitizers (PS) employed, ZnPcS4 showed better chemical oxygen demand (COD) (23%) and phenolic (TPh) (81%) removal. The effect of pH and concentration was also assessed for ZnPcS4. The phenolic content removal was found to be highly dependent on the solution’s pH, as alkaline solutions improve the singlet oxygen quantum yield where the use of a pH = 11 reached 42% and 81% of COD and TPH removal. However, a pH higher than 7 showed higher PS bleaching than pH = 7. Three different PS concentrations were evaluated: 3 × 10−6, 5 × 10−6, and 1 × 10−5 mol/L. The optimal PS concentration was found to be 5 × 10−6 mol/L.

The evolution of the analytical techniques allowed the detection of pollutants so called contaminants of emerging concern (CEC). Water scarcity is a reality lived by some populations. Thus, water reuse is mandatory to minimize this problematic. This implies that wastewater treatments must be improved. The Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP) such as photocatalysis and ozonation can be suitable solutions for CECs abatement. Also, TiO2 powder catalyst is an important material in this field. However, its powder form presents a huge obstacle for industrial application, and the solution may be to support this material. This work studies the degradation of a mixture of 3 parabens by photocatalysis, catalytic and photocatalytic ozonation using TiO2 nanotube arrays (NTs). The studied catalysts were produced using electrolyte solutions with different ages, so the nanotubes growth ocurred at 5 (NTs_5) and 20 (NTs_20) anodization cycles. The toxicological assessment for the initial mixture, final samples and along the reaction time was performed using the cress seeds Lepidium sativum and the bacteria Aliivibrio fischeri. The photocatalysis with UVA radiation led to 50 % and 35 % parabens removal for NTs_5 and NTs_20 catalysts. This can be related to the different dimensional characteristics of the nanotubes. Ozone technologies led to total parabens degradation with an improvement when catalytic ozonation was applied. The use of NTs as catalysts in ozonation also reduced the transferred ozone dose (TOD) required for total parabens abatement when compared to single ozonation. The main parabens degradation mechanism seems to be via direct pathway by molecular ozone. Regarding the toxicity assessment, the toxicity did not change significatively, which can be explained by the intermediate’s formation.

Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is monitored by transthoracic echocardiography and computed tomography (CT) angiography. However, it does not have any early marker of disease progression. This study evaluated speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) aortic and left ventricular (LV) strain prognostic values, their discriminative power, and their correlation with the degree of valvular regurgitation. We conducted a retrospective analysis of a prospectively enrolled cohort of 45 diagnosed with BAV and 20 gender and age matched controls. We performed 2D-STE aortic and LV strain analysis of the selected population. The cohort was followed-up during a median period of 19.9 months (IQR 12.9–25.2), and outcomes (hospital admission for heart failure (HF), aortic valve replacement (AVR), and death) were determined. The olive mill wastewaters obtained from two different processes, press extraction olive mill wastewater (POMW) from Portugal and two-phase system olive mill wastewater (2POMW) from Spain, were treated to recover phenolic compounds and water sequentially, by the integration of liquid-liquid extraction with Fenton's processes. From the recovered fractions, squalene, oleic acid, tyrosol, syringic acid, and p-coumaric acid were identified, and oleic acid appears in a higher concentration for 2POMW wastewater for all used solvents compared to POMW samples. Recovered fractions presented higher antioxidant activity, but remained antioxidants were found in the residual water. The wastewaters coming from a two-phase extraction method (2POMW) present higher phytotoxicity according to germination index, but the application of Fenton's process was able to improve the water quality to be re-used since an increase on the water biodegradability (BOD5/COD) and toxicity reduction were achieved.

Ozonation has been used to degrade persistent water contaminants, namely, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). However, ozonation can lead to by-products that can be more toxic than the parent compounds. This work aims to assess whether the ecotoxicological effects of ozonation are modified as the initial matrix being treated increases in complexity, considering mixtures of 2, 3, 4 and 5 PPCPs. The following PPCPs were used: two parabens (metylparaben (MP) and propylparaben (PP)), paracetamol (PCT), sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and carbamazepine (CBZ). The following model species were used to assess toxicity: the crustacean Daphnia magna, the microalgae Raphidocelis subcapitata, the macrophyte Lemna minor and the watercress Lepidium sativum. There was a trend of increased toxicity with increasing mixture complexity of the untreated samples, except for D. magna. The same was observed after ozonation with the exception of the mixture MP+PP, which showed high toxicity to all the tested species, namely 100% immobilization of D. magna. The toxicity of SMX to the primary producers decreased pronouncedly after ozonation, except for L. minor. This study highlights the importance of considering the complexity of the matrix being treated and of using an ecotoxicological test battery with a wide diversity of species for assessing ozonation efficiency.

The classification of wastes regarding hazardous property HP 14 (ecotoxicity) is essential for proper waste management. In the EU, HP 14 has been estimated based on waste chemical composition rather than using biotests, and guidelines for experimental assessment are still lacking. This study aims at evaluating the potential ecotoxicological impacts of weathered coal fly ash (CFA) from a landfill, as a case study to assess the current EU methodology used to classify wastes regarding HP 14. A large amount of CFA is still landfilled, but its valorisation would be of interest. The analysis was based on the chemical composition of CFA (in ClassifyMyWaste software), and on a battery of five biotests applied to eluates, with Lepidium sativum, Aliivibrio fischeri, Raphidocelis subcapitata, Lemna minor and Daphnia magna. Through chemical analysis, most of the simulations with data from the literature indicated "Possible Hazard", including the sample of this work. Biotests revealed low impairment for most endpoints. D. magna was the most sensitive organism, but the inhibitory effect was significantly reduced after pH adjustment of the eluate. The test with A. fischeri does not seem to be adequate to assess CFA due to the high variability observed in results. The methodology involving a simple battery of bioassays was proven to be enlightening, providing relevant results for HP 14 assessment. The chosen battery of biotests (excluding the A. fischeri test) may be a good starting point to represent the aquatic environment in this context. In short, it seems that weathered CFA can be considered non-hazardous, and therefore the material under analysis could be valorised in practical applications without significant ecotoxic effect on the environment.

Wastewater treatment plants are not specially designed to remove pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs), since these substances are toxic and bio-refractory. This paper aims to investigate and optimize the performance of the Trisep TS80 nanofiltration (NF) membrane for the removal of a mixture of two of the most detected PhACs in municipal wastewaters worldwide, sulfamethoxazole and diclofenac. Several NF tests were carried out to study the rejections of these contaminants both spiked in demineralized water, filtrated water taken from Mondego River and secondary effluent coming from a municipal wastewater treatment plant. Among the several studied operating variables, pH was the one that most affected the contaminant rejection and membrane permeability. In the case of synthetic effluent, an applied pressure of 10 bar and pH 7 were determined as the best operating conditions, which allowed almost total chemical oxygen demand retention and a global contaminant rejection of 96.3% to be achieved. The application of different water matrices (river water and secondary municipal effluent) had no relevant impact on process efficiency. Vibrio fischeri luminescence inhibition tests revealed that treatment by nanofiltration reduced acute toxicity of all studied effluents.

The ubiquitous presence of CBZ, SMX and LRZ in water is a subject of increasing concern. This study represents a new approach in terms of these contaminants’ removal through Fenton process in three different ways, employing a solid catalyst, RM, which, alone, is a source of Fe3＋ just as much is a source of environmental problems. Alongside RM, 100 mg/L of H2O2 were utilized as the initial solution’s pH remained unaltered. It was observed that, at these operating conditions, an appreciable degradation rate of contaminants was achieved. Solar photo-Fenton under visible light radiation led the way by attaining more than 50% removal for all three contaminants, reaching its peak when degrading around 62% of LRZ initially present. Therefore, RM, a residue from the alumina industry, seems to be a promising choice in terms of CECs degradation through Fenton process. Nevertheless, some parameters still need optimization, in order to achieve a better understanding and certainty of this oxidation process’ skilfulness for detoxifying CECs from the world’s water resources. Some organic recalcitrant compounds are not degraded by conventional water treatment systems, making necessary the use of advanced technologies to eliminate these substances. Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) have been extensively proposed to remove emerging contaminants aiming potable water reuse, but literature barely addresses neurotoxic effects of AOPs residual byproducts. These processes involve high costs associated with the electricity, maintenance and oxidizing agent used. However, electrochemical AOPs are techniques based on electron transfer, thus being a clean form of energy and very efficient in the degradation of organic pollutants. Parabens are naturally found in plant sources but most are chemically synthesized, requiring careful treatment to not disturb the environment. In this study, a mixture of parabens (10 mg L−1 each) was degraded by an electrochemical oxidation (EO) system with a Ti/Pt anode. Some parameters, such as the current density (25, 75 and 125 A m−2) and the electrolyte type and concentration (1.5, 3.0 and 5.0 g NaCl L−1 and 3.0 g Na2SO4 L−1) were changed. The best results were obtained with 125 A m−2 and 3.0 g NaCl L−1, which led to the complete degradation of the parabens present in the mixture, after 10 min. In addition to these studies neurotoxicity tests were also performed using the solutions of interest, before and after the EO treatment. It was observed, using the reactive oxygen species (ROS) fluorescent indicator H2DCFDA, that the non-treated solution caused an increase in ROS formation with a signal amplitude of 0.84 ± 0.20 above the baseline. After the EO process the parabens mixture did not lead to a significant ROS change.The solution to bridge the problem of high electricity costs may be replacing it with solar energy, low cost catalysts and other treatment processes involving renewable and eco-friendly energy. Dairy industry wastewater is rich in organic content, presenting a high biodegradability, and therefore biological treatments are widely employed. This study aimed to evaluate biosolids production in three systems: activated sludge (AS), movingbed biofilm reactor (MBBR), and sequencingbatch movingbed biofilm reactor (SBMBBR). Simulated dairy wastewater was used at different organic load rates (OLRs): 1.22, 2.87, and 5.44 gCOD L−1d−1. Besides biosolids production, COD, total carbon (TC), and total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency was evaluated. Biosolids production was measured in the mixed liquor, carrier-adhered biomass, treated wastewater, and surplus sludge. The operational conditions were kept similar for the three systems, with a carrier filling ratio of 50% for MBBR and SBMBBR. The SBMBBR proved to have better performance in the removal efficiencies of COD, TC, and TN for all OLRs studied. The MBBR presented a similar COD and TC removal efficiency as the SBBR for the two highest OLRs (2.87 and 5.44 gCOD L−1d−1). Concerning biosolids production, the MBBR system produced less biomass and delivered the lowest amount of adhered biomass inside the carriers. The AS treatment generated the highest amount of sludge and offered the worst treatment capability for all OLRs evaluated.

The main drawback of Fenton′s process is the formation of ferric sludge. In this work, ion exchange (IE) appears as a complement to the Fenton process, allowing, on the one hand, to remove the iron excess present in the sludge, as well as reduce the COD of the real olive oil industry extraction wastewater (OOIEW) from the Fenton process. The Fenton process uses iron (II) sulfate as catalyst, therefore concentrations of iron up to 2 g L−1 could be present in the treated OOIEW. The iron and COD adsorption equilibrium behavior has been modelized by Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherms. Moreover, the resin efficiency was tested in a continuous fixed-bed column. It was concluded that the resin maintains iron adsorption capacity over at least three reuse cycles. Overall Fenton’s process followed by ion exchange seems to be a promising approach for the treatment of cumbersome industrial wastewaters.

Ensuring drinking water quality is a key factor for public health and it is especially important given the increase in industrialization. Its quality is ensured by a water treatment process that includes a disinfection stage, mainly involving chlorination. However, by applying this disinfection method, unwanted disinfection byproducts (DBPs) are formed. These compounds have, in general, a negative impact on human health. Following this, the development of stricter regulations for drinking water quality standards has been conducted worldwide. Several techniques for the removal of DBPs have already been developed to prevent DBP formation or to reduce DBPs formed during disinfection. Nevertheless, controlling the water distribution systems after drinking water treatment is still important, since DBPs can reoccur along the distribution network. To achieve this, further research should be developed to efficiently monitor and allow the performance of the necessary actions to detect and control these contaminants throughout the water distribution system. Additionally, the most suitable places for sensing along the distribution system must be further assessed.

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a promising catalyst for contaminants of emerging concern removal applications, especially as a visible-light-driven material. In this study, g-C3N4 catalysts were effectively synthesized through a simple thermal polymerization method, using melamine, urea, and thiourea as precursors to elucidate the influence of these compounds on the final product’s photocatalytic performance. The degradation of a mixture of three parabens was investigated under different types of radiation: two artificial, ultraviolet-A (UVA) and visible LED, and natural sunlight. The urea-based catalyst (UCN) presented better results under all radiation sources, followed by thiourea, and finally, melamine. Among the artificial light sources, the degradation of parabens under UVA was considerably higher than visible—up to 51% and 21%, respectively—using UCN; however, the broader spectrum of natural sunlight was able to achieve the highest removals, up to 92%, using UCN. Comparing artificial radiation sources, UVA lamps presented 45% lower energy consumption and associated costs. Photocatalytic ozonation was tested using UCN and MCN, with UCN once more possessing superior performance and a synergetic effect between photocatalysis and ozonation, with complete removal under 12 min. The use of g-C3N4 was then successfully tested in initial screening and found to be an efficient alternative in more low-cost and feasible solar photocatalysis water treatment.

Agro-industrial wastewater management becomes a major task while environmental regulations are becoming stricter worldwide. Agro-industrial wastewaters are known by high content of organic pollutants that cause an adverse effect on the water bodies. Industries are looking for efficient, easy-to-use and affordable treatment processes. Sulfate radical based advanced oxidation processes (S-AOPs) are arising as suitable alternatives for agro-industrial effluents treatment. In this review, the major findings regarding the application of this technology for real agro-industrial wastewater depuration are discussed. Moreover, these technologies are compared as an alternative to Fenton's process, which is a widely studied advanced oxidation process and with high efficiency in the treatment of agro-industrial effluents. The studies already carried out are promising, but there is still a great lack of studies in this area and using this technique.

Resumo Fundamento A cardiomiopatia hipertrófica (CMH) e a hipertrofia ventricular esquerda (HVE) secundária à hipertensão arterial sistêmica (HAS) podem estar associadas a anormalidades funcionais do átrio esquerdo (AE). Objetivos Caracterizar a mecânica do AE na CMH e na HAS e avaliar qualquer correlação com a extensão da fibrose ventricular esquerda medida por ressonância magnética cardíaca (RMC) em pacientes com CMH. Métodos A função longitudinal do AE derivada do ecocardiograma bidimensional com speckle tracking foi adquirida a partir de cortes apicais de 60 pacientes com CMH e 34 indivíduos controles, pareados por idade. Pacientes com CMH também foram submetidos à RMC, com medida da extensão do realce tardio por gadolínio. A associação com parâmetros de strain do AE foi analisada. Valores p < 0,05 foram definidos como estatisticamente significativos. Resultados A média da fração de ejeção do ventrículo esquerdo não foi diferente entre os grupos. A razão E/e’ estava comprometida no grupo CMH e preservada no grupo controle. A mecânica do AE estava significativamente reduzida na CMH em comparação aos pacientes com HAS. O strain rate do AE nas fases de reservatório (SRrAE) e na fase contrátil (SRctAE) foram os melhores parâmetros de discriminação de CMH com uma área sob a curva (AUC) de 0,8, seguido do strain do AE na fase de reservatório (SrAE) (AUC 0,76). O SRrAE e o SRctAE apresentaram elevada especificidade (89% e 91%, respectivamente), e o SrAE apresentou sensibilidade de 80%. Um decréscimo de 2,79% no strain rate do AE na fase de condução (SRcdAE) foi preditor de um aumento de 1 cm na extensão do RT pelo gadolínio (r2=0,42, β 2,79, p=0,027). Conclusões O SRrAE e o SRctAE foram os melhores fatores de discriminação de HVE secundária à CMH. O SRcdAE foi preditor do grau de fibrose ventricular esquerda avaliada por RMC. Esses achados sugerem que a mecânica do AE pode ser um potencial preditor de gravidade de doença na CMH. Functional organic dyes play a key role in many fields, namely in biotechnology and medical diagnosis. Herein, we report two novel 2,3- and 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl substituted rosamines (3 and 4, respectively) that were successfully synthesized through a microwave-assisted protocol. The best reaction yields were obtained for rosamine 4, which also showed the most interesting photophysical properties, specially toward biogenic amines (BAs). Several amines including n- and t-butylamine, cadaverine, and putrescine cause spectral changes of 4, in UV–Vis and fluorescence spectra, which are indicative of their potential application as an effective tool to detect amines in acetonitrile solutions. In the gas phase, the probe response is more expressive for spermine and putrescine. Additionally, we found that methanolic solutions of rosamine 4 and n-butylamine undergo a pink to yellow color change over time, which has been attributed to the formation of a new compound. The latter was isolated and identified as 5 (9−aminopyronin), whose solutions exhibit a remarkable increase in fluorescence intensity together with a shift toward more energetic wavelengths. Self-organized TiO 2 nanotubes as immobilized photocatalysts were evaluated in detail for the photocatalytic degradation of parabens mixtures from ultrapure water. This kind of approach can be a very suitable option for emerging contaminants degradation considering the possibility of the catalyst reuse and recovery which will be simpler than when catalytic powders are used. The anodization method was applied for the TiO 2 nanotubes production under different preparation voltages (20, 30 and 40 V). These preparation conditions are important on the morphological characteristics of nanotubes such as length, as well as internal and external diameters. The photocatalytic efficiency was dependent on the materials preparation voltages. The photocatalytic oxidation was evaluated using two different irradiation sources, namely UVA and sunlight. These irradiation sources were evaluated for parabens mixture degradation using different number of catalytic plates. The increase of the number of plates improved the parabens degradation possibly due to the availability of more active sites which can be relevant for the hydroxyl radical's generation. The effect of the reactor design was also evaluated using sunlight irradiation. The configuration, position and solar concentrators can be important for the performance of degradation. The mechanism of degradation was analysed through by-products formation under sunlight irradiation. The main responsible for parabens degradation was hydroxyl radical. Decarboxylation, dealkylation and hydroxylation seem to be the most important reactional steps for the mixture decontamination.

The deep peribiliary glands (DPBG) are a niche of progenitor cells in the wall of the biliary duct (BD) and are the second line of multiplication when severe lesion of the epithelium occurs. Previous studies have identified DPBG injury as a cause of post-liver transplant (LT) biliary stenosis; this complication is a major cause of post-LT morbidity. The incidence of biliary stenosis in our center is high (38.1%). This study evaluates the lesion of DPBG in response to ischemia. Graft BD was collected in adult LT between August 2016-July 2017, from donation after brain death. Samples of 45 grafts were collected at 2 moments: BD1-during graft preparation and BD2-before biliary anastomosis. Histological analysis of the samples was performed and then classified according to degree of lesion (0, ≤50%, and >50%). A comparison was made between the degree of lesion and graft ischemia, graft histology, donor, and procurement variables. The DPBG lesion was more frequent in BD2 (20.9% vs 7%, P = .079). BD2 lesions with DPBG lesions had higher medians and means at all times of ischemia. The difference was greater in the warm ischemia time (0: 43.3 ± 12.53 minutes vs ≤50%: 52.4 ± 14.38 minutes, P = .068). The group of BD1 with DPBG lesion presented superior median cold ischemia time (CIT). In the analysis of the remaining variables there were also no statistically significant differences. We concluded that during the period of CIT there is already lesion of the DPBG, which increases after reperfusion of the graft, in greater association with longer warm ischemia time.

Parabens are widely used as antimicrobial and preservative ingredients in pharmaceutical and personal care products. Nevertheless, these compounds have been increasingly seen as emerging contaminants that can be toxic to a wide range of species. In this study, the toxic effect of a mixture of parabens (10 mg/L of each paraben: methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, benzyl- and butylparaben) and its degradation products through single and catalytic ozonation (using volcanic rock as low-cost catalyst) was investigated over several non-target species: cladocerans, microalgae, clams, macrophytes and cress. The analysis of the toxicity of parabens mixture is relevant since usually these compounds are used as blends rather than individually. While parabens were totally removed both by single and catalytic ozonation the toxicity of the samples resulting from both treatments was generally high. This toxicity was still compared to the one obtained for several dilutions of the initial parabens mixture and it was concluded that the by-products formed are more toxic than the most diluted parabens mixture sample (0.625 mg/L). While catalytic ozonation allows reducing the amount of ozone (about 3-fold) required for total removal of parabens, the resulting treated solution was more toxic than the sample taken at the endpoint of the single ozonation treatment. This suggests that the highest amount of ozone used for single ozonation allowed the elimination of toxic by-products such as hydroquinone and 1,4-benzoquinone. Still, the effect of by-products and parabens interaction depends on the species analyzed due to their different tolerances to potentially toxic products.

In the European Union (EU), waste is classified according to the List of Waste (LoW) and relying on the assessment of 15 hazardous properties (HPs). Incineration bottom ash (IBA) from municipal solid waste is a mirror entry in the LoW, which leads to extremely different management options within the EU. IBA has shown potential for different applications under a circular economy perspective, contributing both to avoiding waste landfilling and the consumption of natural resources, such as sand and gravel. In this context, IBA evaluation and classification play a significant role in understanding which protection measures should be taken. This work aims to present an assessment of the 15 HPs and the consequent classification of IBA using data from the industry. Each HP is assessed based on knowledge of waste, chemical composition considering concentration limits for hazardous substances, and/or through tests (chemical, physical, or biological). According to the criteria followed, 5 out of 6 samples from a Portuguese Waste-to-Energy plant were considered non-hazardous. Only one sample was classified as hazardous due to the assignment of HP 10, which resulted from Pb content (0.36%) above the concentration limit established for this property (0.3%). Nonetheless, although most hazardous entries in the LoW have this classification based on HP 14, the results obtained for the samples of this work seem to indicate IBA from this study is non-ecotoxic. Moreover, it has been suggested that IBA could possibly achieve the End-of-Waste status according to the Waste Framework Directive. For such purpose, clear criteria should be laid down to safely use the material, and testing is a crucial step.
