Background: Chronic prurigo (CP) is a condition characterised by chronic pruritus and pruriginous lesions. While frequently associated with atopic dermatitis (AD), its link with allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is less understood., Objectives: To describe the clinical features, diagnostic findings, and therapeutic outcomes of CP associated with ACD., Patients/materials/methods: This case series included patients diagnosed with CP or prurigo nodularis, identified through medical records from a specialised ACD clinic. Inclusion criteria were positive patch tests identifying relevant allergens, complete medical histories, and resolution or improvement of CP lesions after allergen avoidance. Patch testing was performed using the Spanish Extended Baseline Series and additional allergen panels as needed, following International Contact Dermatitis Research Group guidelines., Results: Six patients were identified: four cases of CP associated with fragrances and two with textile dyes. All patients improved significantly with allergen avoidance; two required dupilumab. Histological findings and clinical responses suggested a Th2-driven immune response in fragrance-induced ACD and a Th2/Th17 involvement in azo dye-related cases., Conclusions: ACD caused by textile dyes and fragrances may manifest as papular dermatitis with features consistent with CP. Patch testing should be considered for idiopathic CP or cases associated with AD. Background: Onychocryptosis significantly impacts quality of life. Chemical partial matricectomy with phenol is a common surgical treatment. The use of alcohol as a solvent during this procedure has been controversial. In vitro studies suggest that physiologic saline solution (PSS) may be a more effective solvent for phenol., Objective: To evaluate the in vivo efficacy of PSS as a phenol solvent, in terms of postoperative outcomes, compared to alcohol., Methods: A retrospective unicentric cohort study was conducted on patients who underwent partial chemical matricectomy with phenol for onychocryptosis. Sociodemographic and clinical variables were collected and compared between the alcohol and PSS groups. Clinical staging followed Martinez Nova and colleagues' classification. Patients were followed up over a 12-month period to assess postoperative complications., Results: The study population demonstrated typical characteristics of onychocryptosis, with a median age of 20 years. No statistically significant differences were found between the groups in terms of pain, infections, or bleeding postoperatively. There were also no differences in terms of recurrence, days of analgesic use, or need for antibiotic therapy (p > .05)., Conclusion: The results suggest that PSS is as effective and safe as alcohol as a solvent for phenol in chemical partial matricectomy., (Copyright © 2025 by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, Inc. Introduction: Non-melanoma skin cancer within previously irradiated areas presents a common challenge, requiring innovative therapies. Complex scenarios, like XRT-induced basal cell carcinoma (BCC) or Gorlin's syndrome, often involve multiple synchronous tumor lesions where photodynamic therapy (PDT) offers a viable therapeutic alternative., Clinical Case: We present the case of a 49-year-old male with a history of XRT for brain tumors. The patient was undergoing treatment for recurrent basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) in the right temporal irradiated area, unresponsive to conventional treatments. In the latest evaluation, the patient presented a nodular tumor and several peripheral superficial foci. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) was administered using methyl aminolevulinate 160 mg/g in cream (Metvix®) in two sessions spaced 7 days apart before surgery. The photosensitizer was applied 3 h before initiating PDT, and red light exposure was performed with the Aktilite© lamp (wavelength 630 nm, 100 mm distance, voltage 100 to 240 V, frequency 50 Hz, power 180 W) for 7 min. CONCLUSIóN: PDT with methyl aminolevulinate demonstrated efficacy as a neoadjuvant treatment in a case of multiple XRT-induced BCCs before surgery. Background: Transplant recipients are particularly prone to the development of skin cancer, and overexposure to UV radiation during outdoor activities increases the risk of carcinogenesis., Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze sun-related behaviors and knowledge in transplant athletes, examine the frequency of sunburns, and explore associations with a history of skin cancer., Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study. Participants (n = 170) in the XXI World Transplant Games from >50 countries completed a questionnaire on sun protection habits and knowledge, type of transplant, immunosuppressive therapy, and personal history of skin cancer., Results: The most common transplanted organs were the kidney (n = 79), the liver (n = 33), and the heart (n = 31). Overall, 61.3% of athletes had been doing sport for >15 years and 79.5% spent >1-2 h a day outdoors. Fifteen % of athletes had a history of skin cancer. The prevalence of sunburn in the previous year was 28.9%, higher in athletes aged <50 years (37.2%); without a primary school education (58.3%), not taking cyclosporin (32.6%), and athletes who played basketball (75%). The main sun protection measures used were sunscreen (68.9%) and sunglasses (67.3%). Use of a hat or cap was the only measure significantly associated with a reduced prevalence of sunburn., Conclusions: Despite high awareness that sun exposure increases the risk of skin cancer, sunburn was common in transplant athletes. Efforts should be made to strengthen multidisciplinary sun protection education strategies and ensure periodic dermatologic follow-up to prevent sun-induced skin cancer in this population., (© 2021 The Authors. The amputation of a teleost fin rapidly triggers an intricate maze of hierarchically regulated signalling processes which ultimately reconstruct the diverse tissues of the appendage. Whereas the generation of the fin pattern along the proximodistal axis brings with it several well-known developmental regulators, the mechanisms by which the fin widens along its dorsoventral axis remain poorly understood. Utilizing the zebrafish as an experimental model of fin regeneration and studying more than 1000 actinopterygian species, we hypothesized a connection between specific inter-ray regulatory mechanisms and the morphological variability of inter-ray membranes found in nature. To tackle these issues, both cellular and molecular approaches have been adopted and our results suggest the existence of two distinguishable inter-ray areas in the zebrafish caudal fin, a marginal and a central region. The present work associates the activity of the cell membrane potassium channel kcnk5b, the fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 and the sonic hedgehog pathway to the control of several cell functions involved in inter-ray wound healing or dorsoventral regeneration of the zebrafish caudal fin. This ray-dependent regulation controls cell migration, cell-type patterning and gene expression. Epimorphic regeneration in teleost fins occurs through the establishment of a balanced growth state in which a blastema gives rise to all the mesenchymal cells, whereas definite areas of the epidermis proliferate leading to its extension, thus, allowing the enlargement of the whole structure. This type of regeneration involves specific mechanisms that temporally and spatially regulate cell proliferation. To understand how the blastema is formed and how this growth situation is set up, we investigated cell proliferation patterns in the regenerating fin of the goldfish Carassius auratus from the time of amputation to that of blastema formation by using proliferating cell nuclear antigen immunostaining and bromodeoxyuridine labeling. Wound closure and apical epidermal cap formation took place by epidermal migration and re-arrangement, without the contribution of cell proliferation. As soon as the apical cap had formed, the epidermis started to proliferate at its lateral surfaces, in which all layers maintained cycling for the duration of the studied process. The distal epidermal cap, on the contrary, presented very few cycling cells, and its cytoarchitecture was indicative of continuous remodeling due to ray growth. The basal layer of this epidermal cap showed a typical morphology and remained nonproliferative whilst in contact with the proliferating blastema. Proliferation in the mesenchymal compartment of the ray started far from the amputation plane. Subsequently, cycling cells approached that location, until they formed the blastema in contact with the apical epidermal cap. Differences observed between the epidermis and mesenchyma, regarding activation of the cell cycle and the establishment of proliferative patterns, suggest that differential mechanisms regulate cell proliferation in each of these compartments during the initial stages of regeneration., (Copyright 2002 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)
