Key Points: Question: How do different forms of childhood adversity influence developmental changes in psychiatric risk and cognitive ability? Findings: In this cohort study, data on 11 876 children's exposure to 268 different negative life events were distilled into 8 components of childhood adversity (eg, family conflict). Exposure to different forms of adversity was linked to both increases and decreases in psychiatric problems across development. Meaning: Distinct forms of adverse experiences moderated changes in psychiatric risk in different ways across development; these findings hold important implications for advancing prevention and treatment of mental health problems in adversity-exposed youth. Importance: While adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are known to impart significant risk for negative mental health and cognitive outcomes in youth, translation of ACE scores into clinical intervention is limited by poor specificity in predicting negative outcomes. This work expands on the ACE framework using a data-driven approach to identify 8 different forms of traumatic and adverse childhood experiences (TRACEs) and reveal their differential associations with psychiatric risk and cognition across development. Objective: Building upon the traditional ACEs model, this study aimed to characterize unique components of commonly co-occurring TRACEs and to examine moderation of longitudinal change in mental health and cognitive development during adolescence. Design, Setting, and Participants: This work draws from youth and their caregivers who completed up to 4 annual behavioral assessments from 2016 to 2021 as part of the ongoing Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. Data collection was performed at 21 regionally-distributed sites across the United States. Analyses for this work were conducted January 2023 through November 2023. Exposures: Youth participants in the ABCD study's exposure to 268 different TRACEs, which were distilled into adversity components using nonlinear principal components analysis. Main Outcomes and Measures: Mixed-effects and latent change score models considered TRACEs components as moderators of longitudinal change in internalizing and externalizing mental health problems, as well as longitudinal change in cognitive ability. Results: Data were distilled from 11 876 youth participants, who were grouped into dyads with a caregiver. ABCD study youth participants were 9 to 10 years old at baseline assessment (year 0) and 12 to 13 years old at ABCD year 3. A total of 5679 participants (47.8%) were female. Analyses revealed that TRACEs organized into 8 thematic adversity components (e.g., family conflict, interpersonal violence). At baseline assessment (year 0), exposure to nearly every adversity component was associated with poorer mental health and diminished cognitive ability. Yet across time, it was observed that different forms of adversity were variably linked to both increases and decreases in internalizing and externalizing problems. For example, while peer aggression (t = 5.31) and family conflict (t = 5.67) were associated with increases in both internalizing and externalizing problems over early adolescence, community threat (t = 2.82) and poverty (t = 2.07) were linked to decreased problems, potentially representing adaptive suppression of symptoms. Finally, adversity types related to resource deprivation (eg, poverty, caregiver maladjustment) were associated with declines in cognitive ability over early adolescence. Conclusions and Relevance: In this cohort study, distinct forms of TRACEs differentially moderated developmental changes in psychiatric risk and cognitive ability in different ways, offering the possibility for precision-based prediction of risk for youth. Such findings could be used in targeted early prevention and intervention strategies for at-risk youth. Background: Childhood exposure to interpersonal violence (IPV) may be linked to distinct manifestations of mental illness, yet the nature of this change remains poorly understood. Network analysis can provide unique insights by contrasting the interrelatedness of symptoms underlying psychopathology across exposed and non-exposed youth, with potential clinical implications for a treatment-resistant population. We anticipated marked differences in symptom associations among IPV-exposed youth, particularly in terms of 'hub' symptoms holding outsized influence over the network, as well as formation and influence of communities of highly interconnected symptoms. Methods: Participants from a population-representative sample of youth (n = 4433; ages 11–18 years) completed a comprehensive structured clinical interview assessing mental health symptoms, diagnostic status, and history of violence exposure. Network analytic methods were used to model the pattern of associations between symptoms, quantify differences across diagnosed youth with (IPV+) and without (IPV–) IPV exposure, and identify transdiagnostic 'bridge' symptoms linking multiple disorders. Results: Symptoms organized into six 'disorder' communities (e.g. Intrusive Thoughts/Sensations, Depression, Anxiety), that exhibited considerably greater interconnectivity in IPV+ youth. Five symptoms emerged in IPV+ youth as highly trafficked 'bridges' between symptom communities (11 in IPV– youth). Conclusion: IPV exposure may alter mutually reinforcing symptom co-occurrence in youth, thus contributing to greater psychiatric comorbidity and treatment resistance. The presence of a condensed and unique set of bridge symptoms suggests trauma-enriched nodes which could be therapeutically targeted to improve outcomes in violence-exposed youth. This research investigated whether biases in processing threatening emotional cues operate as an indirect pathway through which parental harsh discipline is associated with adolescent socio‐emotional functioning. Participants were 192 adolescents (M age = 12.4), and their parents assessed over two years. Findings revealed two significant indirect pathways involving fear processing. Greater parental harsh discipline was linked to more emotional response inhibition difficulty for fear, which was linked to more depressive symptoms in the following year. Greater parental harsh discipline was also associated with more emotional response inhibition difficulty for fear, and thereby, more peer problems later. Findings suggest that adolescent emotional processing operated as an indirect pathway linking parental harsh discipline and adolescent socio‐emotional functioning within the broader social context. Background: Experiencing traumatic stress is common and may lead to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a number of children and adolescents. Research using advanced imaging techniques is beginning to elucidate some of the neurobiological correlates of the traumatic stress response in youth. Methods: This paper summarizes the emerging network perspective of PTSD symptoms and reviews brain imaging research emphasizing structural and functional connectivity studies that employ magnetic resonance imaging techniques in pediatric samples. Results: Differences in structural connections and distributed functional networks such as the salience, default mode, and central executive networks are associated with traumatic and severe early life stress. The role of development has been relatively underappreciated in extant studies though there is evidence that critical brain regions as well as the structural and functional networks implicated undergo significant change in childhood and these typical developmental differences may be affected by traumatic stress. Conclusions: Future research will benefit from adopting a truly developmental approach that considers children's growth as a meaningful effect (rather than simply a covariate) interacting with traumatic stress to predict disruptions in the anatomical, functional, and connective aspects of brain systems thought to underlie the network of PTSD symptoms. Aggression can be considered a multidimensional construct that influences various forms of antisocial behavior, including juvenile delinquency and conduct problems. The aim of the present study was to assess the psychometric properties of the Brief Peer Conflict Scale-20 item version (PCS-20) among a Portuguese forensic sample (N = 192) of incarcerated male juvenile offenders ( M = 16.62 years; SD = 1.52 years; age range = 13-18 years). The PCS-20 demonstrated good psychometric properties in terms of its four-factor structure, internal consistency, convergent validity, and discriminant validity that generally justify its use among incarcerated male youth. This article examines perceptions of competence/well-being over time and linkages to exposure to natural disaster experiences and stress associated with the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in youth. A multi-wave naturalistic design was used to followN = 3,399 students, ages 8–18 years who were evaluated for perceptions of competence/well-being, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, hurricane exposure experiences, and stress related to the oil spill at three time points across three years. Examination of longitudinal trajectories of competence/well-being revealed growth within youth over time. Age predicted trajectories of competence/well-being, such that older youth had higher ratings of competence/well-being; however, with higher oil spill stress, older youth experienced declines in competence/well-being post-oil spill. There was a negative association between PTSD symptoms and competence/well-being. Findings suggest that perceptions of competence/well-being may be compromised by exposure to disasters, but if maintained may serve as a protective factor. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Analysis of resting state fMRI (rs-fMRI) typically excludes images substantially degraded by subject motion. However, data quality, including degree of motion, relates to a broad set of participant characteristics, particularly in pediatric neuroimaging. Consequently, when planning quality control (QC) procedures researchers must balance data quality concerns against the possibility of biasing results by eliminating data. In order to explore how researcher QC decisions might bias rs-fMRI findings and inform future research design, we investigated how a broad spectrum of participant characteristics in the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) study were related to participant inclusion/exclusion across versions of the dataset (the ABCD Community Collection and ABCD Release 4) and QC choices (specifically, motion scrubbing thresholds). Across all these conditions, we found that the odds of a participant's exclusion related to a broad spectrum of behavioral, demographic, and health-related variables, with the consequence that rs-fMRI analyses using these variables are likely to produce biased results. Consequently, we recommend that missing data be formally accounted for when analyzing rs-fMRI data and interpreting results. Our findings demonstrate the urgent need for better data acquisition and analysis techniques which minimize the impact of motion on data quality.
