Relations between development of gastric ulceration and changes in motility of the stomach, as recorded by the electrogastrogram (EGG), were studied under conditions where Ss (rats) were Exposed to physical (immobilization) and chemical (reserpine) stressors and to the two in combination. Following 35 hrs of the various treatments, all restraint + reserpine Ss were ulcerated; 60% of the restraintonly Ss had lesions; and, only three of ten no-restraint Ss showed gastric damage. The same rank order was obtained for the mean number of lesions per group. There were no significant differences among groups in total acidity of the stomach at autopsy immediately after their experimental treatments. The restraint-only groups showed a trend toward increased gastric motility during the treatment period, while the restraint + reserpine groups showed a progressive decrease in motility, the divergence leading to statistically significant differences as exposure to the different stressors continued. The results do not support the hypothesis that the experimentally-produced lesions are related to an increase in gastric acidity; they do support the hypothesis that the ulceration is related to changes in gastric motility, more severe lesions appearing in Ss whose motility decreased during the treatment period. The article focuses on the role of thiazide diuretics in the treatment for patients with hypertension. Skeptics argue that other antihypertensives are equal to thiazides. However, thiazides are the least expensive agents. This aspect of therapy supports thiazides as first-line pharmacotherapy. The JNC7 recommended starting with 2 agents for patients far from their blood pressure goal. Therefore, even if a thiazide is not the initial agent, it should be the second agent for most patients.

A research project was undertaken by a university library system to develop a sustainable user experience strategy. A task force was convened to conduct a pilot project with members from both libraries in the system to assess staffing responsibilities, guidelines, processes, and data-gathering procedures. The team tested an electronic resources list common to both libraries. In describing the methods employed by the task force in their research, this article outlines the benefits and drawbacks of staffing configurations to initiate user experience practices in an academic library setting. The article outlines the research conducted on the factors that contributes to the subjective memory complaints of elderly patients in the U.S. Studies show that depression, anxiety and dementia, female gender, lower education level and decreased physical activity are associated with memory loss of patients. Researchers discovered that as population ages, primary care physicians encounter significant number of patients with memory loss and dementia. According to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, there is insufficient evidence to evaluate such illness but identifying it promptly enables physicians to counsel patients and caregivers on the course of disease progression.

The article examines the efficacy of regular exercise in reducing the pain and stiffness of osteoarthritis. Results of a study show that regular exercise moderately reduces the pain of osteoarthritis but its efficacy in reducing stiffness is not yet proven. It is suggested that medical practitioners should have a regular communication with their patient about exercise preferences and concerns to assure its efficacy. Physicians may also refer patients to a physical therapist willing to assess them with the proper exercise they need and the factors they need to consider.
