Abstract

Here we present a technique for using machine learning (ML) for single-qubit gate synthesis on field programmable logic for a superconducting transmon-based quantum computer based on simulated studies. Our approach is multi-stage. We first bootstrap a model based on simulation with access to the full statevector for measuring gate fidelity. We next present an algorithm, named adapted randomized benchmarking (ARB), for fine-tuning the gate on hardware based on measurements of the devices. We also present techniques for deploying the model on programmable devices with care to reduce the required resources. While the techniques here are applied to a transmon-based computer, many of them are portable to other architectures.

Abstract

There is mounting evidence that a second quantum revolution based on the technological capabilities to detect and manipulate single quantum particles (e.g., electrons, photons, ions, etc), a feat not achieved during the first quantum revolution, is progressing fast. It is expected that in less than 10 years, this second quantum revolution shall have a significant impact over numerous industries, including finance, medicine, energy, transportation, etc. Quantum computers threaten the status quo of cybersecurity, due to known quantum algorithms that can break asymmetric encryption, which is what gives us the ability to communicate securely using a public channel. Considering the world's dependence on digital communication through data exchange and processing, retaining the ability to communicate securely even once quantum computers come into play, cannot be stressed enough. Two solutions are available: Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC); which, we emphasise, are not mutually exclusive. The EuroQCI initiative, of which EQUO is a part of, focuses on QKD and aims to build a network whereby EU countries can communicate securely through QKD. Abstract

Quantum Kernel Estimation (QKE) is a technique based on leveraging a quantum computer to estimate a kernel function that is classically difficult to calculate, which is then used by a classical computer for training a Support Vector Machine (SVM). Given the high number of 2-local operators necessary for realizing a feature mapping hard to simulate classically, a high qubit connectivity is needed, which is not currently possible on superconducting devices. For this reason, neutral atom quantum computers can be used, since they allow to arrange the atoms with more freedom. Examples of neutral-atom-based QKE can be found in the literature, but they are focused on graph learning and use the analogue approach. In this paper, a general method based on the gate model is presented. After deriving 1-qubit and 2-qubit gates starting from laser pulses, a parameterized sequence for feature mapping on 3 qubits is realized. This sequence is then used to empirically compute the kernel matrix starting from a dataset, which is finally used to train the SVM. It is also shown that this process can be generalized up to N qubits taking advantage of the more flexible arrangement of atoms that this technology allows. The accuracy is shown to be high despite the small dataset and the low separation. Abstract

Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo ground-based interferometers are instruments capable to detect gravitational wave signals exploiting advanced laser interferometry techniques. The underlying data analysis task consists in identifying specific patterns in noisy timeseries, but it is made extremely complex by the incredibly small amplitude of the target signals. In this scenario, the development of effective gravitational wave detection algorithms is crucial. We propose a novel layered framework for real-time detection of gravitational waves inspired by speech processing techniques and, in the present implementation, based on a state-of-the-art machine learning approach involving a hybridization of genetic programming and neural networks. The key aspects of the newly proposed framework are: the well structured, layered approach, and the low computational complexity. The paper describes the basic concepts of the framework and the derivation of the first three layers. Even if the layers are based on models derived using a machine learning approach, the proposed layered structure has a universal nature. Compared to more complex approaches, such as convolutional neural networks, which comprise a parameter set of several tens of MB and were tested exclusively for fixed length data samples, our framework has lower accuracy (e.g., it identifies 45% of low signal-to-noise-ration gravitational wave signals, against 65% of the state-of-the-art, at a false alarm probability of $10^{-2}$), but has a much lower computational complexity and a higher degree of modularity. Furthermore, the exploitation of short-term features makes the results of the new framework virtually independent against time-position of gravitational wave signals, simplifying its future exploitation in real-time multi-layer pipelines for gravitational-wave detection with new generation interferometers.

Abstract

We perform a comprehensive analysis of complete fusion cross section data with the aim to derive, in a completely data-driven way, a model suitable to predict the integrated cross section of the fusion between light to medium mass nuclei at above barrier energies. To this end, we adopted a novel artificial intelligence approach, based on a hybridization of genetic programming and artificial neural networks, capable to derive an analytical model for the description of experimental data. The approach enables, for the first time, to perform a global search for computationally simple models over several variables and a considerable body of nuclear data. The derived phenomenological formula can serve to reproduce the trend of fusion cross section for a large variety of light to intermediate mass collision systems in an energy domain ranging approximately from the Coulomb barrier to the onset of multi-fragmentation phenomena.

Um die Qualität von Arznei- und Gewürzpflanzen langfristig sichern zu können, ist eine genauere Kenntnis der sie beeinflussenden Faktoren von Interesse. Am Beispiel der Zitronenmelisse (Melissa officinalis L.) wurden in zwei Feldversuchen an unterschiedlichen Standorten die Einflüsse der Faktoren Lichtintensität, Sorte und Erntezeitpunkt auf Ertragsparameter sowie sekundäre Pflanzeninhaltsstoffe untersucht. Es konnten teilweise deutliche Effekte der unterschiedlichen Lichtbedingungen auf die Gesamtphenole und die antioxidative Kapazität beobachtet werden, die zum Teil signifikanten Wechselwirkungen zwischen den Prüffaktoren unterlagen.

Abstract

This work investigates high energy states in the self-conjugate 16O nucleus, through the analysis of 13C(3He,α)12C reactions in the 1.4 2.2 MeV bombarding energy range. The cross-section of the decay channel in which an α particle is emitted in coincidence with a 12C residual nucleus in the Hoyle state, leading to four α particles in the final channel, has been measured thanks to a low-threshold and high-resolution array. The occurrence of two low-spin resonant states is highlighted by the analysis of angular distributions, with Jπ = 2+ and 3−, at respective energies of ≃ 24.1 and 24.5 MeV. In this energy window, the observed branching ratios for the transition involving the emission of the Hoyle state appear to be way larger than calculations based on the barrier penetration alone, pointing out to the possible occurrence of largely clustered high-energy states in 16O. Abstract

We report some preliminary experimental results on 13C(3He,α)12C reactions at low bombarding energies, in the range 1.4 – 2.2 MeV. The reconstruction of kinematic quantities in the final channel was performed by using a high-performance, low-threshold hodoscope, allowing for the particle identification even for low energy ejectiles. We succeeded in measuring detailed angular distributions, in absolute values, even for the transition leading to the emission of 12C in the Hoyle state, then resulting into 4 α particles in the final channel. The analysis of angular distributions as a function of energy suggests the occurrence of two low-spin resonant states, respectively with Jπ = 1− and 2+, at excitation energies of ≈ 24.1 and 24.5 MeV.

Abstract

We modeled an unprecedentedly large dataset of complete fusion cross section data using a novel artificial intelligence approach. Our analysis aims especially to unveil, in a data-driven way, nuclear structure effects on the fusion between heavy ions and to suggest a universal formula capable to describe all previously available data. The study focused on light-to-mediummass nuclei, where incomplete fusion phenomena are more difficult to occur and less likely to contaminate the data. The method used to derive the models exploits a state-of-the-art hybridization of genetic programming and artificial neural networks and is capable to derive an analytical expression that serves to predict integrated cross section values. For the first time, we analyzed a comprehensive set of nuclear variables, including quantities related to the nuclear structure of projectile and target. In this manuscript, we describe the derivation of two computationally simple models that can satisfactorily describe, with a reduced number of variables and only a few parameters, a large variety of lightto- intermediate-mass collision systems in an energy domain ranging approximately from the Coulomb barrier to the oncet of multi-fragmentation phenomena. The underlying methods are particularly innovative and are of potential use for a broad domain of applications in the nuclear field.

Abstract

Background and Purpose: Assessing appendicular skeletal muscle (ASM) mass is crucial for the diagnosis of numerous pathologies related to the decline of muscle mass in old age, such as sarcopenia, malnutrition, or cachexia. The dual-energy X-ray absorptiometer (DEXA) radiological technique, which is the gold standard for its assessment, is particularly costly and not routinely used in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to derive computationally simple equations capable of estimating the DEXA-measured ASM at zero cost in older adult populations. Methods: We used the cross-sectional data collected by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) over 7 years (1999-2006). The study sample included 16,477 individuals aged 18 years and over, of which 4401 were over 60 years old. We considered 38 nonlaboratory variables. For the derivation of the equations, we employed the Brain Project, an innovative artificial intelligence tool that combines genetic programming and neural networks. The approach searches simultaneously for the mathematical expression and the variables to use in the equation. The derived equations are useful to estimate the DEXA-measured ASM. Results and Discussion: A simple equation that includes the body weight of the patient as the sole variable can estimate the outcome of DEXA with an accuracy equivalent to previously published equations. When used to identify individuals over 60 years old with muscle mass loss, it achieved an area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.85 for both males and females. The inclusion of sex and anthropometric data (thigh and arm circumference) improved the accuracy for male individuals (AUC 0.89). The model is also suitable to be applied to the general adult population of 18 years of age or older. Using more than 3 variables does not lead to better accuracy. Conclusions: The newly proposed equations have better diagnostic accuracy than previous equations for the estimation of DEXA-measured ASM. They are readily applicable in clinical practice for the screening of muscle mass loss in the over 60-year-old population with nearly zero-cost variables. Abstract

"The publications of the interdisciplinary and internationally networked Research Platform “World Order – Religion – Violence” seek to improve our understanding of the relationship between religion, politics and violence. It therefore deals especially with the return of religious themes and symbols into politics, with the analysis of the link between political theory and religion, and finally with the critical discussion of the secularization thesis. At the centre of the research are questions concerning the causes of violent conflict, the possibilities for a just world order and the conditions for peaceful coexistence on a local, regional, national and international/worldwide scale between communities in the face of divergent religious and ideological convictions. Its task is to initiate and coordinate thematically related research-efforts from various disciplinary backgrounds at the University of Innsbruck. It creates a network between departments, research-teams and single researchers working on topics of religion, politics and violence. The overall aim of the research platform World Order-Religion-Violence is to promote excellence in social and human science research on religion and politics at the University of Innsbruck and to guarantee the diffusion of this particular competence on a national and international level.", Mit der Verabschiedung des Integrationskonzeptes Liechtenstein – Stärke durch Vielfalt durch die Regierung im Jahre 2010 betrat das Fürstentum ein neues Terrain: Von diesem Zeitpunkt an wurde Integration als öffentliche Angelegenheit im Dienste der Bevölkerung wahrgenommen und nachhaltig vorangebracht. Aus diesem Anlass organisierte das Ausländer-und Passamt in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Liechtenstein-Institut eine Vortragsreihe, deren primäres Ziel darin bestand, die unterschiedlichen Dimensionen der Integrationsarbeit der Bevölkerung näher zu bringen. Der vorliegende Sammelband dokumentiert diese Vortragsreihe, die im Zeitraum März bis Juli 2011 im Fürstentum Liechtenstein durchgeführt wurde.
