Abstract

A global approximation method of Nystr\"om type is explored for the numerical solution of a class of nonlinear integral equations of the second kind. The cases of smooth and weakly singular kernels are both considered. In the first occurrence, the method uses a Gauss-Legendre rule whereas in the second one resorts to a product rule based on Legendre nodes. Stability and convergence are proved in functional spaces equipped with the uniform norm and several numerical tests are given to show the good performance of the proposed method. An application to the interior Neumann problem for the Laplace equation with nonlinear boundary conditions is also considered., Comment: 31 pages, 1 figure

Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to provide a characterization of the error of the best polynomial approximation of composite functions in weighted spaces. Such a characterization is essential for the convergence analysis of numerical methods applied to non-linear problems or for numerical approaches that make use of regularization techniques to cure low smoothness of the solution. This result is obtained through an estimate of the derivatives of composite functions in weighted uniform norm.

Abstract

The port of Salerno, one of the largest on the Tyrrhenian coast, was implanted in the Middle Ages west of the city. Deteriorated over time due to neglect and serious problems of cover-up afflicting the area, it was replanted after the unification of Italy, creating a closed basin with the mouth turned to the east. The wrong orientation and the massive landfill phenomena supervening, led to the severe erosion of the eastern beach, on which it stood the city. In order to cope with the phenomena, in the last decades of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, multiple defense interventions were carried out by sheltered cliffs that filled the coast with the total metamorphosis of the coastal strip.

Abstract

To-date, despite remarkable applications in optoelectronics and tremendous amount of theoretical, computational and experimental efforts, there is no technological pathway enabling the fabrication of 3D photonic band gaps in the visible range. The resolution of advanced 3D printing technology does not allow to fabricate such materials and the current silica-based nanofabrication approaches do not permit the structuring of the desired optical material. Materials based on colloidal self-assembly of polymer spheres open 3D complete band gaps in the infrared range, but, owing to their critical index, not in the visible range. More complex systems, based on oriented tetrahedrons, are still prospected. Here we show, numerically, that FCC foams (Kepler structure) open a 3D complete band gap with a critical index of 2.80, thus compatible with the use of rutile TiO2. We produce monodisperse solid Kepler foams including thousands of pores, down to 10 um, and present a technological pathway, based on standard technologies, enabling the downsizing of such foams down to 400 nm, a size enabling the opening of a complete band gap centered at 500 nm., Comment: Main text[16 pages, 4 Figures] and supplementary information

Abstract

This article examines Sartre's works in which his attempt to find an existentialist ethics is evident. Most of the clues to this project are to be found in texts published posthumously since during his lifetime he never managed to fulfil the promise he made at the end of Being and Nothingness. It will be argued that this existentialist ethics owes a strong debt to Kantian philosophy, even if it confronts more directly the historical dynamics of violence and oppression. Despite the fact that this project is unfinished and only sketched out, it is possible to ask what Sartre's direction of development would have been, pointing to the outline of a normative theory, Critical Existentialism, that could have its place in contemporary ethical debate.
