Abstract

Gravitational wave astronomy has been already a well-established research domain for many years. Moreover, after the detection by LIGO/Virgo collaboration, in 2017, of the first gravitational wave signal emitted during the collision of a binary neutron star system, that was accompanied by the detection of other types of signals coming from the same event, multi-messenger astronomy has claimed its rights more assertively. In this context, it is of great importance in a gravitational wave experiment to have a rapid mechanism of alerting about potential gravitational waves events other observatories capable to detect other types of signals (e.g. in other wavelengths) that are produce by the same event. In this paper, we present the first progress in the development of a neural network algorithm trained to recognize and characterize gravitational wave patterns from signal plus noise data samples. We have implemented two versions of the algorithm, one that classifies the gravitational wave signals into 2 classes, and another one that classifies them into 4 classes, according to the mass ratio of the emitting source. We have obtained promising results, with 100% training and testing accuracy for the 2-class network and approximately 95% for the 4-class network. We conclude that the current version of the neural network algorithm demonstrates the ability of a well-configured and calibrated Bidirectional Long-Short Term Memory software to classify with very high accuracy and in an extremely short time gravitational wave signals, even when they are accompanied by noise. Moreover, the performance obtained with this algorithm qualifies it as a fast method of data analysis and can be used as a low-latency pipeline for gravitational wave observatories like the future LISA Mission., Comment: 51 pages, 29 figures. Abstract

In this paper, which is of programmatic rather than quantitative nature, we aim to further delineate and sharpen the future potential of the LISA mission in the area of fundamental physics. Given the very broad range of topics that might be relevant to LISA, we present here a sample of what we view as particularly promising directions, based in part on the current research interests of the LISA scientific community in the area of fundamental physics. We organize these directions through a "science-first" approach that allows us to classify how LISA data can inform theoretical physics in a variety of areas. For each of these theoretical physics classes, we identify the sources that are currently expected to provide the principal contribution to our knowledge, and the areas that need further development. The classification presented here should not be thought of as cast in stone, but rather as a fluid framework that is amenable to change with the flow of new insights in theoretical physics., Comment: 22 pages, 1 figure, to appear in General Relativity and Gravitation

Abstract

Silver nanoparticles were prepared by chemical reduction method. Silver nitrate was taken as a metal precursor, chondroitin sulfate as a stabilizing agent, and glucose as a reducing agent. The formation of Ag nanoparticles was monitored using ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the presence of elemental Ag signal, with no peaks of other impurities detected. The ultraviolet-visible spectra of colloidal solutions of Ag nanoparticles show that the chondroitin sulfate concentration has a substantial influence on the reaction rate of Ag nanoparticle formation, as well as on the size of the nanoparticles. The position and shape of plasmonic absorption spectra of Ag nanoparticles also depend on the duration of the synthesis reaction. Functional groups identified with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirm the formation of high-purity Ag nanoparticles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This work presents a new Visual Basic 6.0 application for estimating the fractal dimension of images, based on an optimized version of the box-counting algorithm. Following the attempt to separate the real information from noise, we considered also the family of all band-pass filters with the same band-width (specified as parameter). The fractal dimension can be thus represented as a function of the pixel color code. The program was used for the study of paintings cracks, as an additional tool which can help the critic to decide if an artistic work is original or not. Abstract

Steganography, alongside cryptography, are efficient methods for confidential information transmission. The subject of this paper will be represented by a method of communicating in secret based on steganographic techniques. In the paper's contents a steganographic solution for hiding a text in a container image will be presented, as well as the reverse operation of extracting the text from the steganographic image obtained from a direct method. The result of applying the steganographic method will be compared for different resolutions of the container images. An analysis will be able to occur through visual inspection. AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) audio files are increasingly used, gradually replacing MP3 format files in many audio/video services, due to their low compression rate and good audio signal quality. Due to these properties, AAC audio files are frequently used for embedding information hidden by steganographic methods. This paper presents an analysis of the steganographic schemes used for audio files in AAC format, but also of the detecting and extracting methods of embedded information (steganalysis). 32. The “sand watch” mandible.

Abstract

The lingual surface of the mandible’s body is commonly indicated as presenting the submandibular and sublingual fossae, which are separated by the mylohyoid line. The mylohyoid line attaches to the mylohyoid muscle (MM). Less attention has been paid to the ‘mylohyoid boutonnières’, which allow the ‘sublingual buttons’ to pass through the mylohyoid muscle in the submandibular space. The cone-beam computed tomography files of patients were routinely examined for anatomical studies. Two cases were found with unexpected morphologies of the mandible’s body — the mylohyoid lines were incomplete anteriorly, and herniated sublingual tissue determined an additional fossa inferior to that line in the premolar region. That fossa was termed the ‘accessory submandibular fossa’. It determined on coronal slices a ‘sand watch’ contour of the mandible’s body. With such a peculiar morphology, the mandible is more prone to fracture. Moreover, when inserting endosseous implants, the procedure should be carefully personalised in such rare cases. Abstract

In this paper, which is of programmatic rather than quantitative nature, we aim to further delineate and sharpen the future potential of the LISA mission in the area of fundamental physics. Given the very broad range of topics that might be relevant to LISA, we present here a sample of what we view as particularly promising directions, based in part on the current research interests of the LISA scientific community in the area of fundamental physics. We organize these directions through a "science-first" approach that allows us to classify how LISA data can inform theoretical physics in a variety of areas. For each of these theoretical physics classes, we identify the sources that are currently expected to provide the principal contribution to our knowledge, and the areas that need further development. The classification presented here should not be thought of as cast in stone, but rather as a fluid framework that is amenable to change with the flow of new insights in theoretical physics.

Abstract

It is very important to understand, quantify and mitigate the physiological impact of heat stress in pigs. For pigs, the thermal comfort zone temperature ranges between 18 and 25°C. Thermal stress negatively affects the function of the intestinal barrier, inflammatory response, postabsorptive metabolism, directly affecting growth performance and carcass quality causing a serious acid-base imbalance, poor feed conversion, low nutrient intake and high mortality. Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus) is a valuable plant resource due to its yield (10-15 t/ha of tuber production), and a functional food ingredient with nutraceutical properties due to its chemical composition, mineral and vitamin profile, and antioxidant activity. It is a highly productive and easily grown crop that can last for years into soil. It is also a beneficial prebiotic source with a high inulin content (75% of the carbohydrate complex). Jerusalem artichoke tubers can be administered fresh or powdered with positive effects on intestinal microflora. Jerusalem Artichoke improves the microbial content and the defense and regeneration process of the gut. This study aims to achieve a comprehensive analysis of the importance and need of using Jerusalem artichoke as a beneficial and affordable feed ingredient in combating the negative effects of heat stress on pigs. Abstract

Searching and finding low-cost natural nutritional solutions high in bioactive nutrients is imperative on today’s livestock. Genus Rumex includes about 150 species of annual, biennial and perennial herbs distributed mostly in temperate areas, including Romania. As reported by some authors, dry matter (DM) and crude fibre (CF) concentration of this plant can gradually increase from spring to first cut in June and fat concentration is similar to alfalfa and maize. Rumex spp. leaves can be considered as a phytoadditive with antioxidant, antibacterial and antiparasitic properties, anticoccidial and antiinflammatory activities. The benefits of plant are due to its chemical composition: anthraquinones, tannins, flavonoids and phenolic acids. Some of these compounds have shown anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. This natural alternative source of nutrients can be collected from its natural habits and can be recommended as a valued medicinal herb and appreciated culinary vegetable. Some studies concluded that Rumex spp. can be used as fodder for livestock with real benefits effects on production performances, intestinal health, serum parameters and milk composition. Several broilers’ studies noticed positive effects of patience dock on growth performances, duodenal morphology, serum thyroid hormones, and cecal microbiota. Taking into consideration the reported positive effects of Rumex spp. a dietary moderate inclusion in animal feed can be recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
