The potential for a large disaster in Banda Aceh City requires that the school buildings to be highly resilient to the risks that may arise. One of the efforts to evaluate the performance of the building structure is by developing a fragility curve that shows the probability of damage to school buildings. For seismic susceptibility, the fragility curve is formed using the Incremental Dynamic Analysis method which uses historical earthquake data. As for tsunami susceptibility, the fragility curve is formed by reviewing the inundation heights that have occurred based on the data that have been available. The aim of this study is to elaborate the seismic and tsunami susceptibility of the typical school buildings that located in three coastal districts in Banda Aceh City. The summary results of this study indicate that it is necessary to carry out periodic maintenance of school buildings in the coastal area of Banda Aceh city so that they become strong buildings and are ready to be used if a large-scale disaster occurs.

The probabilistic kinematic analysis for rock slope has been conducted on one slope along USAID road in Aceh Province, Indonesia. This research aims to develop the modelled probability density function (PDF) and determine the probabilistic of planar failure occurrence (Pop). The geometry of discontinuity planes (dip and dip directions) and slope geometry (slope angle and slope face) were collected from our previous study. One slope with planar failure criteria was selected. The Monte Carlo simulations were performed in generating 100 new random values in 100 time iterations to produce modelled PDFs for the geometry of discontinuity plans based on statistical parameters of field observed data. The probabilistic of each experimental PDFs were computed to produce the probabilistic of planar failure occurrence. The result reveals that the distribution of dip and dip directions for experimental PDFs are considered Beta and Normal distributions. The statistical parameters produced in the model are almost likely similar to observed data. It means the model that was developed are reliable and conscientious. The rule of Φ < βj < βs and dip directions (αj) within ±20° to slope face (αs) are utilised as the boundaries to calculate the probabilistic of planar failure occurrence (Pop) which revealing 0.26.

The Aceh and Seulimeum Faults flank the Krueng Aceh Basin in Indonesia, and the shear-wave velocity (Vs) structure of the basin is not extensively available. Understanding the Vs structure is very important in order to figure out how the basin structures seemingly appear, and this can eventually be used to generate a microzonation map for other forthcoming studies. To provide this, Vs was measured over an area approximately covering Banda Aceh City and its surroundings, by setting two lines consisting of eight points projected in the NW–SE and SW–NE orientations. This research aims to facilitate the approximation of the Vs structure characteristics of the Krueng Aceh Basin using the microtremor array method (MAM). Triangular configurations were set by deploying four seismometers following an M-station geometry for three different array sizes (i.e., 3, 10, and 30 m in distance). The data were then processed by utilizing the spatial autocorrelation (SPAC) technique. The result shows that the Vs structure generally dips down from SE to NW, and it gradually declines from SW to NE. The combination of these Vs structures tends to be oblique toward the SW–NE direction. This form may be affected by the Aceh Segment Fault which is more active than the Seulimeum Segment Fault. The average maximum penetration depth and Vs are 603 m and 947.5 m/s in the SE–NW orientation, and 650 m and 958 m/s in the SW–NE direction. Generally, the thickness of the strata is greater in the upstream area compared to the downstream area. Their composition consists of alluvium (A) at the uppermost layer and diluvium (D) at the underlying layers. Then, all of the identified strata are aged from the Pleistocene to Tertiary Pleistocene (Tp). These characteristics of the strata could potentially cause surface damages as a result of site effect responses when an earthquake is occurring.

This paper presents a post-earthquake damage assessment of the 6.5 Mw earthquake in Pidie Jaya, Indonesia which occurred on December, 7th 2016. The earthquake killed 112 people and caused the collapse of about 3000 buildings. The assessment started on the day after the earthquake. The survey covered nine sub-districts of Pidie Jaya regency in the Province of Aceh, northern Sumatra. The post-event damage assessment was conducted by a team of researchers from Syiah Kuala University and local authorities. The damage survey assessed the damage levels of residential houses, school buildings and markets. The most common construction damages reported in this article are failures of reinforced concrete, confined masonry and timber structures. The ground motion field was modeled using Openquake application and the site response employed Vs30 values inferred from topography. This calculated ground motion was compared to data from post-earthquake field assessment reports. The highest percentage of heavy damage was recorded in the area of the fault rupture and along the shorelines area. The types of failure observed are summarized in the context of Indonesian construction practice, with particular reference to the seismic resilience of the Rumoh Aceh traditional wood construction.
