7. A within-coil optical prospective motion-correction system for brain imaging at 7T

Abstract

PURPOSE: Motion artifact limits the clinical translation of high-field MR. We present an optical prospective motion correction system for 7 Tesla MRI using a custom-built, within-coil camera to track an optical marker mounted on a subject. METHODS: The camera was constructed to fit between the transmit-receive coils with direct line of sight to a forehead-mounted marker, improving upon prior mouthpiece work at 7 Tesla MRI. We validated the system by acquiring a 3D-IR-FSPGR on a phantom with deliberate motion applied. The same 3D-IR-FSPGR and a 2D gradient echo were then acquired on 7 volunteers, with/without deliberate motion and with/without motion correction. Three neuroradiologists blindly assessed image quality. In 1 subject, an ultrahigh-resolution 2D gradient echo with 4 averages was acquired with motion correction. Four single-average acquisitions were then acquired serially, with the subject allowed to move between acquisitions. A fifth single-average 2D gradient echo was acquired following subject removal and reentry. RESULTS: In both the phantom and human subjects, deliberate and involuntary motion were well corrected. Despite marked levels of motion, high-quality images were produced without spurious artifacts. The quantitative ratings confirmed significant improvements in image quality in the absence and presence of deliberate motion across both acquisitions (P < .001). The system enabled ultrahigh-resolution visualization of the hippocampus during a long scan and robust alignment of serially acquired scans with interspersed movement. CONCLUSION: We demonstrate the use of a within-coil camera to perform optical prospective motion correction and ultrahigh-resolution imaging at 7 Tesla MRI. The setup does not require a mouthpiece, which could improve accessibility of motion correction during 7 Tesla MRI exams.

Abstract

Chronic compartment syndrome (CSS) refers to the pain that develops as a result of exercise that increases pressure in a part of the body where bone or fascia (a connective tissue) tightly enclose softer tissues, leading to decreased blood flow in the region. CCS is a vague diagnosis, often made on the basis of an examination only, and little is known about its pathophysiology. It is possible that use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could throw light on the problem. Twenty patients with a possible diagnosis of CCS and five normal volunteers underwent clinical examination, pre- and post-exercise MRI, blood flow measurements, and pressure measurements within the leg's compartments (anatomical divisions of the leg). Eight patients had leg pain both upon exertion and at rest, nine had exertional CCS, and three had no exertional pain. Results showed no consistent blood flow changes but there was a tendency for patients with exertional pain to have higher pressures in the leg. MRI showed changes with exercise with both T1 and T2 (variables measured by MRI) elevated after exercise. The patients with pain on exertion only had greater changes and T1 and T2 took longer to return to normal. Although MRI remains a potentially useful method for investigating CCS, it must be used in combination with other approaches. Abstract

One of the most important concepts for obtaining an image using MRI is the use of magnetic field gradients. There have been developed different techniques to improve the quality of the magnetic field gradients that allow high strength gradient fields that can be rapidly switched on and off for fast imaging modalities, large homogeneous-gradient-volume or minimum inductance. This work is focused on a comparison between two methods based in the target field method proposed by Turner to build cylindrical unshielded gradient coils. Carlson proposed a current distribution using a Fourier series for a coil of finite length (CAHM). Another solution was proposed by Chronik [4] that adds a set of current constraints forcing the current to lie over a certain length (CCMI). A transverse head gradient coil for imaging application has been implemented in the MATLAB software language and used to create a gradient coil using the CCMI and CAHM methods. 32. A Post-processing Technique to Suppress Fluid Signal and Increase Contrast in Multispectral MR Exams of MS Patients.

Abstract

We present a new method to extract data from multispectral MR exams of patients with Multiple Sclerosis. Our technique produces images of "spectral phase" relative to cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF-SP images). It provides a convenient way of reducing multispectral MR exams to a single, intuitive image with contrast characteristics similar to anatomical photographs. Our new images provide better tissue contrast than that found in any of the MR images. Contrast between CSF and white matter (WM) was increased from a maximum of 19.5 in the T1w MR image to 56 in the CSF-SP image (+187%). Contrast between CSF and gray matter (GM) increased from a maximum of 14.5 in the T1w image to 35.2 in the CSF-SP image (+143%). Finally, contrast between WM and GM increased from a maximum of 7.5 in the T2w image to 11.5 in the CSF-SP image (+53%). The additional contrast in CSF-SP images may aid the quantification and analysis of lesion activity in MR exams of MS patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The article presents information on the application of two coupled middleware systems for analyzing seismic data. It is stated that large scientific datasets are becoming standard in a wide range of applications. Several challenges are faced by the data-driven applications that generate and reference large datasets. Seismic images are reconstructed by tracing the data collected by sensors or simulated by numerical models. The two middlewares used in analyzing the data include, a distributed data querying and subsetting system and a component-based system.
