Flexibility, opportunities for exploration, and a focus on 21st century skills make out-of-school time (OST) programs an ideal environment for authentic learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM; Committee on STEM Education, 2013; Noam & Shah, 2014). In addition, because OST programs serve significant populations of young people who are underrepresented in STEM, they may be able to reduce the opportunity gap for these youth and help to enhance youth learning and engagement. This article presents one approach to the design and development of professional learning resources for OST educators as they implement a high-quality STEM curriculum. The resources were developed as a team, based on research into the STEM professional development needs of OST practitioners, and they constitute a form of self-driven professional learning. The tiered system of professional development resources developed may guide other OST STEM programs toward providing the professional learning resources OST educators need to facilitate quality instruction.

BackgroundTesticular cancer diagnosis and treatment, especially given its threat to sexuality and reproductive health, can be distressing in the formative period of young adulthood and the majority of young survivors experience impairing, distressing, and modifiable adverse outcomes that can persist long after medical treatment. These include psychological distress, impairment in pursuit of life goals, persistent physical side effects, elevated risk of secondary malignancies and chronic illness, and biobehavioral burden (e.g., enhanced inflammation, dysregulated diurnal stress hormones). However, few targeted interventions exist to assist young survivors in renegotiating life goals and regulating cancer-related emotions, and none focus on reducing the burden of morbidity via biobehavioral mechanisms. This paper describes the methodology of a randomized controlled biobehavioral trial designed to investigate the feasibility and preliminary impact of a novel intervention, Goal-focused Emotion-Regulation Therapy (GET), aimed at improving distress symptoms, emotion regulation, goal navigation skills, and stress-sensitive biomarkers in young adult testicular cancer patients.MethodsParticipants will be randomized to receive six sessions of GET or Individual Supportive Therapy (ISP) delivered over 8 weeks. In addition to indicators of intervention feasibility, we will measure primary (depressive and anxiety symptoms) and secondary (emotion regulation and goal navigation skills, career confusion) psychological outcomes prior to (T0), immediately after (T1), and 12 weeks after (T2) intervention. Additionally, identified biomarkers will be measured at baseline and at T2.DiscussionGET may have the potential to improve self-regulation across biobehavioral domains, improve overall cancer adjustment, and address the need for targeted supportive care interventions for young adult cancer survivors.Trial registrationClinicaltrials.gov, NCT04150848. Efforts to prevent or persuade increased emphasis on academic research at state colleges and regional universities demonstrate how emerging fields of higher education can be influenced through various policies and incentives. Utilizing the concept of strategic action fields (Fligstein & McAdam, 2012), this paper explains changes in organizations by providing insight into how state policy influences constructed, meso-level social orders. Expanding on Pierre Bourdieu's (1996) concept of fields, defined as the structured arena where practice occurs, strategic action fields extend the analysis to that of groups of actors competing for advantage and resources to increase their capabilities and reputations.

Transfer of knowledge from one context to another is one of the paramount goals of education. Educators want their students to transfer what they are learning from one topic to the next, between courses, and into the "real world." However, it is also notoriously difficult to get students to successfully transfer concepts. This issue is of particular concern in biology and the life sciences, for which transfer of concepts between disciplines is especially critical to understanding. Students not only struggle to transfer concepts like energy from chemistry to biology but also struggle to transfer concepts like chromosome structures in cell division within biology courses. This paper reviews the current research and understanding of transfer from cognitive psychology. We discuss how learner abilities, taught material, and lesson characteristics affect transfer and provide best practices for biology and life sciences education.

Background: For total hip arthroplasty (THA), a new technology in the evolution of computer-assisted surgery has emerged in the form of augmented reality (AR). We sought to determine the impact of AR on resident and fellow education after implementation at an academic teaching center. Materials and Methods: The senior author's intraoperative technique allows for the orthopedic trainee to use AR to correct the acetabular component's position after an attempt is made with standard instrumentation. One year after the implementation of this AR method, both resident and fellow trainees were issued an anonymous survey regarding their experience and descriptive statistics were calculated for the results. Results: Sixteen trainees responded to the survey. One hundred percent felt the use of AR improved their understanding of acetabular component placement and improved their intraoperative experience. Sixty-nine percent reported feeling there was a small increase in operative time but 25% reported no increase in operative time when using AR. Seventy-five percent of trainees felt that patients benefited from the technology and would be in favor of AR if they were having a THA. The majority of those surveyed reported a desire to use AR in their practice if it is available. Conclusion: Computer-assisted surgery has demonstrated variable impacts on orthopedic education. After the implementation of AR at an academic teaching center, all trainees reported it improved their intraoperative experience and their understanding of acetabular component placement. ObjectiveCancer during young adulthood can limit the extent to which one adopts an adult self-image. However, the relationship of adult self-image to cancer-related adjustment remains unexplored. The current study examines relationships of adult self-image and social/emotional well-being and job-related problems in young testicular cancer survivors. Factors thought to facilitate future-oriented goals (i.e. agency and meaning) are examined as intermediary processes.DesignTesticular cancer survivors (N = 171) between the ages of 18 and 29 completed questionnaire measures of adult self-image, agency, sense of meaning and indicators of adjustment.Main outcome measuresSocial and emotional well-being were measured by the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General. Job problems were assessed using the EORTC's testicular cancer supplement (EORTC QLQ-TC26).ResultsPath model results revealed direct associations of survivors' adult self-image with social (β = .20, p < .05), but not emotional well-being (β = .14, p < .01). Both agency and meaning mediated the relationship of adult self-image and well-being indicators. Finally, the relationship between adult self-image and job problems was only significant for those who were employed or in school (β = -.19, p < .05).OutcomesAssessment of adult self-image might be useful in identifying risk for poor adjustment. Interventions that target agency and meaning might facilitate developmental goals.

Perspiration-based wearable biosensors facilitate continuous monitoring of individuals' health states with real-time and molecular-level insight. The inherent inaccessibility of sweat in sedentary individuals in large volume (≥10 µL) for on-demand and in situ analysis has limited our ability to capitalize on this noninvasive and rich source of information. A wearable and miniaturized iontophoresis interface is an excellent solution to overcome this barrier. The iontophoresis process involves delivery of stimulating agonists to the sweat glands with the aid of an electrical current. The challenge remains in devising an iontophoresis interface that can extract sufficient amount of sweat for robust sensing, without electrode corrosion and burning/causing discomfort in subjects. Here, we overcame this challenge through realizing an electrochemically enhanced iontophoresis interface, integrated in a wearable sweat analysis platform. This interface can be programmed to induce sweat with various secretion profiles for real-time analysis, a capability which can be exploited to advance our knowledge of the sweat gland physiology and the secretion process. To demonstrate the clinical value of our platform, human subject studies were performed in the context of the cystic fibrosis diagnosis and preliminary investigation of the blood/sweat glucose correlation. With our platform, we detected the elevated sweat electrolyte content of cystic fibrosis patients compared with that of healthy control subjects. Furthermore, our results indicate that oral glucose consumption in the fasting state is followed by increased glucose levels in both sweat and blood. Our solution opens the possibility for a broad range of noninvasive diagnostic and general population health monitoring applications.

The utilization of a different manufacturer for the prosthetic femoral head and the polyethylene insert in dual mobility (DM) for total hip arthroplasty (THA) may be necessary, especially in the revision setting. However, there is no data in the literature about this application. This study evaluated the outcomes of mixed manufacturer components, with the hypothesis that there would be no difference in measured outcomes compared to matched components. The DM articulations implanted during THA revision were retrospectively reviewed from 2011 to 2017. The study group was then stratified into 2 cohorts: matching components or mixed components. Of 130 hips included in the study with DM articulations with average follow-up of 7 years, 103 had mixed and 27 had matching manufacturer components. Rates of all cause reoperation and revision, intraprosthetic dislocation, dislocation, and aseptic loosening were compared using Chi -squared and Fisher's exact test; survival analysis was also performed. Matched and mixed manufacturer implants had no significant difference between all cause reoperation (33 versus 25.2%), dislocation (14.8 versus 7.7%), and aseptic loosening (3.7 versus 3.9%), respectively. Higher rates of intraprosthetic dislocation (11 versus 0.97%) were observed in the matching component cohort. Survival analysis showed similar outcomes at 2, 5, and 10 years. Mixed-component DM articulations show similar results compared to matching components. The off-label use of mixed manufacture DM articulation in THA is a feasible and safe option in the correct patient. Furthermore, when encountering a well-fixed femoral stem or acetabular shell, the use of a mixed component DM articulations may reduce the morbidity for the patient and prevent revision of all components.
