1. LLMSecCode: Evaluating Large Language Models for Secure Coding

Abstract

The rapid deployment of Large Language Models (LLMs) requires careful consideration of their effect on cybersecurity. Our work aims to improve the selection process of LLMs that are suitable for facilitating Secure Coding (SC). This raises challenging research questions, such as (RQ1) Which functionality can streamline the LLM evaluation? (RQ2) What should the evaluation measure? (RQ3) How to attest that the evaluation process is impartial? To address these questions, we introduce LLMSecCode, an open-source evaluation framework designed to assess LLM SC capabilities objectively. We validate the LLMSecCode implementation through experiments. When varying parameters and prompts, we find a 10% and 9% difference in performance, respectively. We also compare some results to reliable external actors, where our results show a 5% difference. We strive to ensure the ease of use of our open-source framework and encourage further development by external actors. 2. Federated Learning with Multi-resolution Model Broadcast

Abstract

In federated learning, a server must periodically broadcast a model to the agents. We propose to use multi-resolution coding and modulation (also known as non-uniform modulation) for this purpose. In the simplest instance, broadcast transmission is used, whereby all agents are targeted with one and the same transmission (typically without any particular favored beam direction), which is coded using multi-resolution coding/modulation. This enables high-SNR agents, with high path gains to the server, to receive a more accurate model than the low-SNR agents do, without consuming more downlink resources. As one implementation, we use transmission with a non-uniform 8-PSK constellation, where a high-SNR receiver (agent) can separate all 8 constellation points (hence receive 3 bits) whereas a low-SNR receiver can only separate 4 points (hence receive 2 bits). By encoding the least significant information in the third bit, the high-SNR receivers can obtain the model with higher accuracy, while the low-SNR receiver can still obtain the model although with reduced accuracy, thereby facilitating at least some basic participation of the low-SNR receiver. We show the effectiveness of our proposed scheme via experimentation using federated learning with the MNIST data-set.

3. AniMAIRE -- A New Openly Available Tool for Calculating Atmospheric Ionising Radiation Dose Rates and Single Event Effects During Anisotropic Conditions

Abstract

AniMAIRE (Anisotropic Model for Atmospheric Ionising Radiation Effects) is a new model and Python toolkit for calculating radiation dose rates experienced by aircraft during anisotropic solar energetic particle events. AniMAIRE expands the physics of the MAIRE+ model such that dose rate calculations can be performed for anisotropic solar energetic particle conditions by supplying a proton or alpha particle rigidity spectrum, a pitch angle distribution, and the conditions of Earth's magnetosphere. In this paper, we describe the algorithm and top-level structure of AniMAIRE and showcase AniMAIRE's capabilities by analysing the dose rate maps that AniMAIRE produces when the time-dependent spectra and pitch angle distribution for GLE71 are inputted. We find that the dose rates AniMAIRE produces for the event fall between the dose rates produced by the WASAVIES and CRAC:DOMO models. Dose rate maps that evolve throughout the event are also shown, and it is found that each peak in the inputted pitch angle distribution generates a dose rate hotspot in each of the polar regions. AniMAIRE has been made available openly online so that it can be downloaded and run freely on local machines and so that the space weather community can easily contribute to it using Github forking., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, manuscript submitted to Space Weather Journal. However, it is unclear why resilient women handle their diagnosis better, not only mentally, but also physically. The aim of this study was to investigate paths between resilience, physical activity, and mental, physical, and global health-related quality of life in breast cancer patients.Patients and Methods: Structural equation modeling was conducted to evaluate the proposed structural paths using a sample of 638 women with newly diagnosed breast cancer patients from Sweden.Results: Resilience was directly associated with physical activity and mental health-related quality of life. It was indirectly associated with physical functioning, through mental health-related quality of life and physical activity. Resilience was also indirectly associated with global quality of life, through mental health-related quality of life.Conclusion: Mental health support and encouraging physical activity may be especially relevant to enhance all aspects of health-related quality of life early in the breast cancer process. Results should be replicated longitudinally.Plain Language Summary: Receiving a breast cancer diagnosis can be highly disruptive to one’s worldview and sense of normalcy. Many women with breast cancer describe the diagnostic period as even more stressful than receiving treatment. However, some women handle their breast cancer diagnosis better than others. Resilience is a psychological trait that refers to one’s ability to cope with highly stressful events and maintain good wellbeing despite adversity. More resilient women were shown to handle a breast cancer diagnosis better, not only mentally, but also physically. They also describe their quality of life as higher than low resilient women. However, it is unclear why resilient women have not only better mental health, but also physical health. In this study, we addressed this question by examining the relationships between resilience, mental health, physical functioning, physical activity, and patients’ self-reported quality of life. We found that mental health and physical activity explained the relationship between resilience and physical functioning and self-reported quality of life. This suggests that highly resilient women experience less psychological distress following a breast cancer diagnosis and are more inclined to maintain physical activity during this stressful period. Consequently, they may manage to have better physical functioning and evaluate their quality of life as better. This study highlights the importance of psychosocial support and encouraging physical activity in women with breast cancer who may struggle to cope with their diagnosis. Abstract

Anesthesia is a prerequisite for most surgical procedures in both animals and humans. Significant strides have been made in search of effective and safer compounds that elicit rapid induction and recovery from anesthesia. However, recent studies have highlighted possible negative effects of several anesthetic agents on the developing brain. The precise nature of this cytotoxicity remains to be determined mainly due to the complexity and the intricacies of the mammalian brain. Various invertebrates have contributed significantly toward our understanding of how both local and general anesthetics affect intrinsic membrane and synaptic properties. Moreover, the ability to reconstruct in vitro synapses between individually identifiable pre- and postsynaptic neurons is a unique characteristic of molluscan neurons allowing us to ask fundamental questions vis-à-vis the long-term effects of anesthetics on neuronal viability and synaptic connectivity. Here, we highlight some of the salient aspects of various molluscan organisms and their contributions toward our understanding of the fundamental mechanisms underlying the actions of anesthetic agents as well as their potential detrimental effects on neuronal growth and synaptic connectivity. We also present some novel preliminary data regarding a newer anesthetic agent, dexmedetomidine, and its effects on synaptic transmission between Lymnaea neurons. The findings presented here underscore the importance of invertebrates for research in the field of anesthesiology while highlighting their relevance to both vertebrates and humans.

13. The Variation of Radiation Effective Dose Rates and Single Event Effect Rates at Aviation Altitudes with Magnetospheric Conditions and Geographic Location

Abstract

The geographic structure of radiation dose rates at aircraft altitudes in Earth's atmosphere during the irradiation of Earth by proton spectra from incoming solar particle events is examined using the recently developed MAIRE+ software. Conditions are examined under two incoming proton spectra, a low/hard spectral index and a high/soft spectral index spectra, which are representative of some of the solar particle events that have caused reasonably sized Ground-Level Enhancements/Events (GLEs) over the past 70 years. It is found through the use of `cut-throughs' of the atmosphere, that the atmosphere can be divided into three volumes; a high dose rate polar region, a low dose rate equatorial region, and a transition region between the two. The location of these regions as a function of latitude, longitude and altitude is characterised. It is also found that the location of the transition region changes for different magnetospheric disturbance levels, implying that the total radiation dose rate an aircraft will experience if it passes through the transition region will be subject to large systematic uncertainties, particularly during the currently unknown levels of magnetospheric disturbance that a major solar event could cause. 14. Acela: Predictable Datacenter-level Maintenance Job Scheduling

Abstract

Datacenter operators ensure fair and regular server maintenance by using automated processes to schedule maintenance jobs to complete within a strict time budget. Automating this scheduling problem is challenging because maintenance job duration varies based on both job type and hardware. While it is tempting to use prior machine learning techniques for predicting job duration, we find that the structure of the maintenance job scheduling problem creates a unique challenge. In particular, we show that prior machine learning methods that produce the lowest error predictions do not produce the best scheduling outcomes due to asymmetric costs. Specifically, underpredicting maintenance job duration has results in more servers being taken offline and longer server downtime than overpredicting maintenance job duration. The system cost of underprediction is much larger than that of overprediction. We present Acela, a machine learning system for predicting maintenance job duration, which uses quantile regression to bias duration predictions toward overprediction. We integrate Acela into a maintenance job scheduler and evaluate it on datasets from large-scale, production datacenters. Compared to machine learning based predictors from prior work, Acela reduces the number of servers that are taken offline by 1.87-4.28X, and reduces the server offline time by 1.40-2.80X.

Abstract

In this paper, we consider inverse limits of $[0,1]$ using upper semicontinuous set-valued functions. We aim to expand on a previous paper exploring the relationship between the existence periodic points of a continuous function to the existence of indecomposable subcontinua of the corresponding inverse limit. In a previous paper, sufficient conditions were given such that if a satisfactory bonding map $F$ had a periodic cycle of period not a power of 2, then $\lim\limits_{\leftarrow}\{[0,1],F\}$ contains an indecomposable continuum. We show that the condition that $F$ is almost nonfissile is sharp by constructing an upper semicontinuous, surjective map $F$ that has the intermediate value property and periodic cycles of every period, yet produces a hereditarily decomposable inverse limit., Comment: 14 pages

17. Spatial point process via regularisation modelling of ambulance call risk

Abstract

This study investigates the spatial distribution of emergency alarm call events to identify spatial covariates associated with the events and discern hotspot regions for the events. The study is motivated by the problem of developing optimal dispatching strategies for prehospital resources such as ambulances. To achieve our goals, we model the spatially varying call occurrence risk as an intensity function of an inhomogeneous spatial Poisson process that we assume is a log-linear function of some underlying spatial covariates. The spatial covariates used in this study are related to road network coverage, population density, and the socio-economic status of the population in Skellefte{\aa}, Sweden. A new heuristic algorithm has been developed to select an optimal estimate of the kernel bandwidth in order to obtain the non-parametric intensity estimate of the events and to generate other covariates. Since we consider a large number of spatial covariates as well as their products, and since some of them may be strongly correlated, lasso-like elastic-net regularisation has been used in the log-likelihood intensity modeling to perform variable selection and reduce variance inflation from overfitting and bias from underfitting. As a result of the variable selection, the fitted model structure contains individual covariates of both road network and demographic types. We discovered that hotspot regions of calls have been observed along dense parts of the road network. Evaluation of the model also suggests that the estimated model is stable and can be used to generate a reliable intensity estimate over the region, which can be used as an input in the problem of designing prehospital resource dispatching strategies.

Abstract

This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period. We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases, JWST will go deeper faster than expected. Abstract

Abstract Extracellular vesicles (EVs) play a crucial role in intercellular communication by transferring bioactive molecules from donor to recipient cells. As a result, EV fusion leads to the modulation of cellular functions and has an impact on both physiological and pathological processes in the recipient cell. This study explores the impact of EV fusion on cellular responses to inflammatory signaling. Our findings reveal that fusion renders non-responsive cells susceptible to inflammatory signaling, as evidenced by increased NF-κB activation and the release of inflammatory mediators. Syntaxin-binding protein 1 is essential for the merge and activation of intracellular signaling. Subsequent analysis show that EVs transfer their functionally active receptors to target cells, making them prone to an otherwise unresponsive state. EVs in complex with their agonist, require no further stimulation of the target cells to trigger mobilization of NF-κB. While receptor antagonists were unable to inhibit NF-κB activation, blocking of the fusion between EVs and their target cells with heparin mitigated inflammation in mice challenged with EVs.

Machine learning (ML) is an important component for enabling automation in Radio Access Networks (RANs). The work on applying ML for RAN has been under development for many years and is now also drawing attention in 3GPP and Open-RAN standardization fora. A key component of multiple features, also highlighted in the recent 3GPP specification work, is the use of mobility, traffic and radio channel prediction. These types of predictions form the intelligence enablers to leverage the potentials for ML for RAN, both for current and future wireless networks. Abstract

In this paper, we consider inverse limits of [0,1] using upper semicontinuous set-valued bonding functions with the intermediate value property. Expanding on classical results by Barge and Martin, we explore the relationship between periodicity in the bonding function and the topology of the corresponding inverse limit. In particular, for an inverse limit of a single upper semicontinuous bonding map with the intermediate value property, we provide sufficient conditions for the existence of a periodic cycle with period not a power of two in the bonding function to imply the existence of an indecomposable subcontinuum of the inverse limit. We also give a partial converse. Along the way to these results, we show that subcontinua of these inverse limits have the full-projection property.

35. Six-year mortality associated with living alone and loneliness in Swedish men and women born in 1930

Abstract

Abstract Background This study examined how living alone and loneliness associate with all-cause mortality in older men and women. Methods Baseline data from the Gothenburg H70 Birth Cohort Studies, including 70-year-olds interviewed in 2000 and 75-year-olds (new recruits) interviewed in 2005 were used for analyses (N = 778, 353 men, 425 women). Six-year mortality was based on national register data. Results At baseline, 36.6% lived alone and 31.9% reported feelings of loneliness. A total of 72 (9.3%) participants died during the 6-year follow-up period. Cumulative mortality rates per 1000 person-years were 23.9 for men and 9.6 for women. Mortality was increased more than twofold among men who lived alone compared to men living with someone (HR 2.40, 95% CI 1.34–4.30). Elevated risk remained after multivariable adjustment including loneliness and depression (HR 2.56, 95% CI 1.27–5.16). Stratification revealed that mortality risk in the group of men who lived alone and felt lonely was twice that of their peers who lived with someone and did not experience loneliness (HR 2.52, 95% CI 1.26–5.05). In women, a more than fourfold increased risk of mortality was observed in those who experienced loneliness despite living with others (HR 4.52, 95% CI 1.43–14.23). Conclusions Living alone was an independent risk factor for death in men but not in women. Mortality was doubled in men who lived alone and felt lonely. In contrast, mortality was particularly elevated in women who felt lonely despite living with others. In the multivariable adjusted models these associations were attenuated and were no longer significant after adjusting for mainly depression in men and physical inactivity in women. Gender needs to be taken into account when considering the health consequences of living situation and loneliness.

Abstract

Aim: The main objective of the current study was to explore the value of risk-adjustment when comparing (i.e. benchmarking) long-term overall survival (OS) in breast cancer (BC) between Swedish regions. We performed risk-adjusted benchmarking of 5- and 10-year OS after HER2-positive early BC diagnosis between Sweden's two largest healthcare regions, constituting approximately a third of the total population in Sweden. Methods: All patients diagnosed with HER2-positive early-stage BC between 01-01–2009 and 31-12-2016 in healthcare regions Stockholm-Gotland and Skane were included in the study. Cox proportional hazards model was used for risk-adjustment. Unadjusted (i.e. crude) and adjusted 5- and 10-year OS was benchmarked between the two regions. Results: The crude 5-year OS was 90.3% in the Stockholm-Gotland region and 87.8% in the Skane region. The crude 10-year OS was 81.7% in the Stockholm-Gotland region and 77.3% in the Skane region. However, when adjusted for age, menopausal status and tumour biology, there was no significant OS disparity between the regions, neither at the 5-year nor 10-year follow-up. Conclusion: This study showed that risk-adjustment is relevant when benchmarking OS in BC, even when comparing regions from the same country that share the same national treatment guidelines. This is, to our knowledge, the first published risk-adjusted benchmarking of OS in HER2-positive BC.

Abstract

Introduction: Cardiovascular and metabolic disorders rarely occur alone in old age but often cluster together in the so-called metabolic syndrome (MetS). While individual components of MetS, such as obesity, hypertension, and diabetes, have been linked to dementia and brain atrophy, their combined impact on cognitive and brain aging remains poorly explored. Our current study aims to investigate the relationship between MetS and markers of neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular pathologies while also considering potential differences between sexes. Methods: We included 741 cognitively intact septuagenarians from the Gothenburg H70-Birth cohort 1944 with available brain MRI (286 had cerebrospinal fluid [CSF] sampling). MetS was defined by standard criteria (at least three among adiposity, raised blood pressure, blood glucose, reduced HDL-cholesterol, elevated triglycerides). MRI markers of brain pathology included overall (mean cortical thickness) and Alzheimer's disease (AD; average cortical thickness in signature areas) neurodegeneration, cerebral small vessel disease (SVD; markers such as white matter hyperintensity, lacunes, microbleeds, and perivascular spaces, and SVD score) and DTI's white- matter microstructural changes (fractional anisotropy). CSF biomarkers included t-tau, neurofilament light, neurogranin (overall neurodegeneration), Aβ42 and p-tau (AD), and CSF/serum albumin ratio (blood-brain barrier integrity). Analyses included regression models and stratification by sex. Results: Overall, 410 participants (53%, n=196 women) had MetS. MetS was associated with increased odds of overall (OR=2.0, 95%CI 1.4–2.9) and AD-related (OR=1.8, 95%CI 1.4–2.6) neurodegeneration, high SVD burden (presence of ≥3 SVD compared to none: OR=2.1, 95%CI 1.1–4.3), and white-matter microstructural changes. Within the SVD markers, MetS was particularly related to white matter hyperintensities, lacunes, and perivascular spaces in basal ganglia. Furthermore, MetS was associated with alterations of blood-brain barrier integrity in the CSF subsample. Sex differences showed increased SVD burden in men with MetS, especially enlarged perivascular spaces (OR=2.9, 95%CI 1.7–5.0), while no differences were observed in women. No associations were detected with amyloid and tau. Discussion: MetS in late life is linked to neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular pathologies, with SVD more prominent in men with MetS, but not in women.

ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to identify a panel of biomarkers for distinguishing early stage sepsis patients from non-infected trauma patients.BackgroundAccurate differentiation between trauma-induced sterile inflammation and real infective sepsis poses a complex life-threatening medical challenge because of their common symptoms albeit diverging clinical implications, namely different therapies. The timely and accurate identification of sepsis in trauma patients is therefore vital to ensure prompt and tailored medical interventions (provision of adequate antimicrobial agents and if possible eradication of infective foci) that can ultimately lead to improved therapeutic management and patient outcome. The adequate withholding of antimicrobials in trauma patients without sepsis is also important in aspects of both patient and environmental perspective.MethodsIn this proof-of-concept study, we employed advanced technologies, including Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization (MALDI) and multiplex antibody arrays (MAA) to identify a panel of biomarkers distinguishing actual sepsis from trauma-induced sterile inflammation.ResultsBy comparing patient groups (controls, infected and non-infected trauma and septic shock patients under mechanical ventilation) at different time points, we uncovered distinct protein patterns associated with early trauma-induced sterile inflammation on the one hand and sepsis on the other hand. SYT13 and IL1F10 emerged as potential early sepsis biomarkers, while reduced levels of A2M were indicative of both trauma-induced inflammation and sepsis conditions. Additionally, higher levels of TREM1 were associated at a later stage in trauma patients. Furthermore, enrichment analyses revealed differences in the inflammatory response between trauma-induced inflammation and sepsis, with proteins related to complement and coagulation cascades being elevated whereas proteins relevant to focal adhesion were diminished in sepsis.ConclusionsOur findings, therefore, suggest that a combination of biomarkers is needed for the development of novel diagnostic approaches deciphering trauma-induced sterile inflammation from actual infective sepsis.

50. Galaxy Alignments with Surrounding Structure in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

Abstract

Using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Legacy Survey, we study the alignment of luminous galaxies with spectroscopic data with the surrounding larger-scale structure as defined by galaxies with only photometric data. We find that galaxies from the red sequence have a statistically significant tendency for their apparent long axes to align parallel to the projected surrounding structure. Red galaxies more luminous than the median of our sample ($M_r < -21.78$) have a mean alignment angle $\langle \Phi \rangle < 45^{\circ}$, indicating preferred parallel alignment, at a significance level $>4.5 \sigma$ on projected scales $0.1\,\mathrm{Mpc} < r_p \leq 7.5\,\mathrm{Mpc}$. Fainter red galaxies have $\langle \Phi \rangle < 45^{\circ}$ at a significance level $>4.3\sigma$ at scales $1\,\mathrm{Mpc} < r_p < 3\,\mathrm{Mpc}$. At a projected scale $r_p = 3.0\,\mathrm{Mpc}$, the mean alignment angle decreases steadily with increasing luminosity for red galaxies with $M_r \lesssim -22.5$, reaching $\langle \Phi \rangle = 40.49^{\circ} \pm 0.56^{\circ}$ for the most luminous one percent ($M_r \sim -23.57$). Galaxies from the blue sequence show no statistically significant tendency for their axes to align with larger-scale structure, regardless of galaxy luminosity.
