Abstract

Physical modeling is essential for developing the theory of concentrated, tornado-like vortices. Physical modeling data are crucial for interpreting real tornado field measurements and mathematical modeling data. This review focuses on describing and analyzing the results of a physical modeling of the structure and dynamics of tornado-like vortices, which are laboratory analogs of the vortex structures observed in nature (such as "dust devils" and air tornadoes). This review discusses studies on various types of concentrated vortices in laboratory conditions: (i) wall-bounded, stationary, and tornado-like vortices, (ii) wall-free, quasi-stationary, and tornado-like vortices, and (iii) wall-free, non-stationary, and tornado-like vortices. In our opinion, further progress in the development of the theory of non-stationary concentrated tornado-like vortices will determine the possibility of setting up the following studies: conducting experiments in order to study the mechanisms of vortex generation near the surface, determining the factors contributing to the stabilization (strengthening) and destabilization (weakening) of the generated vortices, and to find methods and means of controlling vortices. Abstract

This paper presents a preliminary analysis of the plasma dynamic modes of operation of end-type magnetoplasma compressor (MPC) discharges. The characteristic methods used to organize the optical pumping of a photodissociation gas laser using an MPC discharge are briefly described. The kinetic and energy characteristics of photodissociation gas optical quantum generators (OQGs) with optical pumping by an MPC discharge were evaluated. Based on the numerical calculations, an analysis of the radiation–plasma dynamic structures and the spectral brightness characteristics of the MPC discharge in the ohmic mode of plasma heating was carried out. Abstract

Mathematical modeling is the most important tool for constructing the theory of concentrated tornado-like vortices. A review and analysis of computational and theoretical works devoted to the study of the generation and dynamics of air tornado-like vortices has been conducted. Models with various levels of complexity are considered: a simple analytical model based on the Bernoulli equation, an analytical model based on the vorticity equation, a new class of analytical solutions of the Navier–Stokes equations for a wide class of vortex flows, and thermodynamic models. The approaches developed to date for the numerical simulation of tornado-like vortices are described and analyzed. Considerable attention is paid to developed approaches that take into account the two-phase nature of tornadoes. The final part is devoted to the analysis of modern ideas about the tornado, concerning its structure and dynamics (up to the breakup) and the conditions for its occurrence (tornadogenesis). Mathematical modeling data are necessary for interpreting the available field measurements while also serving as the basis for planning the physical modeling of tornado-like vortices in the laboratory. Abstract

The artificial olfaction units (or e-noses) capable of room-temperature operation are highly demanded to meet the requests of society in numerous vital applications and developing Internet-of-Things. Derivatized 2D crystals are considered as sensing elements of choice in this regard, unlocking the potential of the advanced e-nose technologies limited by the current semiconductor technologies. Herein, we consider fabrication and gas-sensing properties of On-chip multisensor arrays based on a hole-matrixed carbonylated (C-ny) graphene film with a gradually changed thickness and concentration of ketone groups of up to 12.5 at.%. The enhanced chemiresistive response of C-ny graphene toward methanol and ethanol, of hundred ppm concentration when mixing with air to match permissible exposure OSHA limits, at room-temperature operation is signified. Following thorough characterization via core-level techniques and density functional theory, the predominant role of the C-ny graphene-perforated structure and abundance of ketone groups in advancing the chemiresistive effect is established. Advancing practice applications, selective discrimination of the studied alcohols is approached by linear discriminant analysis employing a multisensor array’s vector signal, and the fabricated chip’s long-term performance is shown.

Abstract

AbstractThis paper is devoted to the computational and theoretical assessment of the physical and technical characteristics of the effect of intense energy fluxes on the target in the magneto-inertial method of plasma confinement. The results of calculating the effect of intense broadband radiation fluxes on a single-layer cylindrical target are presented. Based on these calculations, the possibility of creating compact neutron generators is estimated. The processes of radiation transfer, thermal and electromagnetic processes, including the coefficients of thermal conductivity of electrons and ions and suprathermal electrons, are studied. A new algorithm for the numerical solution of the hyperbolic and parabolic (thermal) parts of the plasma dynamics equations is briefly described.

The problem was stated and a numerical simulation of plasma-gas-dynamic processes in the interaction of laser radiation with a target was carried out. Abstract

The one-step method for graphene oxide (GO) simultaneous reduction and carboxylation via ultraviolet irradiation in the inert atmosphere has been reported. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) data revealed that the proposed approach allows to obtain reduced graphene oxide (rGO) films, containing up to 10 at.% of carboxyl groups. The carboxyl groups concentration can be tuned within the range of 3 to 10 at.% by controlling the oxidation degree of the irradiated GO via the preliminary low-temperature air heating. Furthermore, no carboxylation effect is observed in the case of irradiation of the completely reduced GO films. This coincides with our previous results, validating the proposed model of GO carboxylation based on photoinduced conversion of basal-plane hydroxyl groups and ketones into carboxyl ones. Despite a different degree of carboxylation, all the obtained samples demonstrate almost complete elimination of basal plane groups and restoration of the graphene flakes aromatic structure. This fact is emphasized by the sheet resistance measurements, demonstrating that the obtained C-xy graphene exhibits high electrical conductivity. As a net result, the material obtained by the presented method shows promising applications in the manufacturing of biosensor transducers owing to both its conductive nature and presence of carboxyl groups, playing the role of the anchoring points for biomolecules.
