Abstract: The γ decay of the elusive narrow, near-threshold proton resonance in 11B was investigated at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (INFN) in a particle-γ coincidence experiment, using the 6Li(6Li,pγ) fusion-evaporation reaction and the GALILEO-GALTRACE setup. No clear signature was found for a possible E1 decay to the 1/21−, first-excited state of 11B, predicted by the Shell Model Embedded in the Continuum (SMEC) with a branching of 0.98−69+167×10−3 with respect to the dominant particle-decaying modes. The statistical analysis of the γ-ray spectrum provided an average upper limit of 2.37×10−3 for this γ-ray branching, with a global significance of 5σ. On the other hand, by imposing a global confidence level of 3σ, a significant excess of counts was observed for E=γ9300(20) keV, corresponding to a resonance energy of 11429(20) keV (namely 200(20) keV above the proton separation energy of 11B) and a γ-ray branching of 1.12(35)×10−3. This result is compatible with the SMEC calculations, potentially supporting the existence of a near-threshold proton resonance in 11B.

3. Effect of localization–delocalization transition on thermoelectric properties of Bi2Te2Se topological insulator

Abstract: The thermal transport properties of Bi2Te2Se topological insulators show a range of complex features. Large bulk resistivities coexisting with prominent Shubnikov–de Haas quantum oscillations and proximity to metallic states mark this p-band system as an unconventional topological quantum material. Here, using the density functional plus dynamical mean-field theory method, we show how localization–delocalization transition underpins the T-dependence of thermoelectric responses from room down to low temperatures. We present the implications of our many-particle analysis to resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity, and Lorenz number and propose that related broadband systems close to electronic transitions could be of use in thermoelectrics.

Abstract: The nucleus 212Po has been produced through the fragmentation of a 238U primary beam at 1 GeV/nucleon at GSI, separated with the FRagment Separator, FRS, and studied via isomer γ-decay spectroscopy with the RISING setup. Two delayed previously unknown γ rays have been observed. One has been attributed to the E3 decay of a 21− isomeric state feeding the α-emitting 45-s (18+) high-spin isomer. The other γ-ray line has been assigned to the decay of a higher-lying 23+ metastable state. These are the first observations of high-spin states above the 212Po (18+) isomer, by virtue of the selectivity obtained via ion-by-ion identification of 238U fragmentation products. Comparison with shell-model calculations points to shortfalls in the nuclear interactions involving high-j proton and neutron orbitals, to which the region around Z∼100 is sensitive.

Abstract: The decay of the 21.47-MeV stretched resonance in 13C, arising from p3/2→d5/2 nucleon excitation coupled to maximum spin, was investigated in a (p,p′) experiment at 135 MeV proton bombarding energy, performed at the Cyclotron Centre Bronowice (CCB) at IFJ PAN in Krakow. First experimental information on the proton and neutron decay branches from this state was obtained by using coincidence measurement of protons inelastically scattered on a 13C target and γ rays from daughter nuclei, namely, 12B (proton decay) and 12C (neutron decay). The main branches lead to the Jπ=2+, first-excited state at 0.953 MeV in 12B, and to the Jπ=1+, T=1 level at 15.110 MeV in 12C. The results were compared with predictions from the Gamow Shell Model (GSM), which was used to describe the stretched resonance in terms of its energy, width, electromagnetic transition strengths and decay pattern. A very good agreement was obtained between the measured and calculated properties of the 21.47-MeV stretched resonance in 13C, demonstrating the high-quality and precision of the GSM wave function calculations, which include coupling to the resonant and non-resonant particle continuum.

10. Emergent normal-state Mottness in the infinite-layer NdNiO_{2} superconductor

Abstract: We present a computational study based on density functional plus dynamical mean-field theory calculations for the normal-state electronic reconstruction of pure and hole-doped NdNiO_{2} superconductors. Our results capture the T dependence of the electrical resistivity, providing a many-particle interpretation of the emergence of pseudogaplike features at low energies as well as the weakly insulating regime seen in experiment. We show how Mottness manifests itself in the weak localization to bad-metallicity crossover due to strong correlation in the e_{g}-shell one-particle spectral functions and self-energies.

Abstract: The neutron-rich 213Pb isotope was produced in the fragmentation of a primary 1 GeV A 238U beam, separated in FRS in mass and atomic number, and then implanted for isomer decay γ-ray spectroscopy with the RISING setup at GSI. A newly observed isomer and its measured decay properties indicate that states in 213Pb are characterized by the seniority quantum number that counts the nucleons not in pairs coupled to angular momentum J=0. The conservation of seniority is a consequence of a geometric phase associated with particle-hole conjugation, which becomes observable in semi-magic nuclei where nucleons half-fill the valence shell. The γ-ray spectroscopic observables in 213Pb are thus found to be driven by two mechanisms, particle-hole conjugation and seniority conservation, which are intertwined through a Berry phase.

Abstract: The γ-ray emission from the nuclei 62,64Fe following Coulomb excitation at bombarding energy of 400-440 AMeV was measured with special focus on E1 transitions in the energy region 4-8 MeV. The unstable neutron-rich nuclei 62,64Fe were produced at the FAIR-GSI laboratories and selected with the FRS spectrometer. The γ decay was detected with AGATA. From the measured γ-ray spectra the summed E1 strength is extracted and compared to microscopic quasi-particle phonon model calculations. The trend of the E1 strength with increasing neutron number is found to be fairly well reproduced with calculations that assume a rather complex structure of the 1− states (three-phonon states) inducing a strong fragmentation of the E1 nuclear response below the neutron binding energy.

Abstract: Resumo Araceae está entre as famílias com maior riqueza de espécies para o bioma Mata Atlântica e é caracterizada pela presença de inflorescência em espádice, associada a uma bráctea, a espata. Este trabalho tem como objetivo inventariar as espécies de Araceae do Parque Nacional do Caparaó, com chave de identificação, descrições e ilustrações diagnósticas das espécies. Para isso, foram realizadas expedições de coleta nos meses de janeiro, abril e novembro de 2017, em diferentes trilhas, altitudes e formações vegetacionais do ParNa. O material coletado foi depositado no herbário RB e as duplicatas enviadas para o herbário GFJP, UNOP. Estas foram analisadas, além das amostras disponíveis em sites do speciesLink, Jabot e Herbário Virtual Reflora. Foram encontradas 21 espécies nativas da Mata Atlântica, distribuídas em quatro gêneros, sendo os mais representativos: Anthurium e Philodendron com nove espécies cada. Além disso, foram evidenciados dois novos registros para estados brasileiros (Xanthosoma maximilianii para o Espírito Santo e Philodendron acutatum para Minas Gerais), uma espécie endêmica desta Unidade de Conservação (A. mourae) e três espécies novas para a ciência. Esses resultados reforçam a importância de estudos florísticos e a conservação do ParNa Caparaó.

Abstract: The lifetimes of the low-lying excited states 2+ and 4+ have been directly measured in the neutron-deficient 106,108Sn isotopes. The nuclei were populated via a deep-inelastic reaction and the lifetime measurement was performed employing a differential plunger device. The emitted γ rays were detected by the AGATA array, while the reaction products were uniquely identified by the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer. Large-Scale Shell-Model calculations with realistic forces indicate that, independently of the pairing content of the interaction, the quadrupole force is dominant in the B(E2;21+→0g.s.+) values and it describes well the experimental pattern for 104−114Sn; the B(E2;41+→21+) values, measured here for the first time, depend critically on a delicate pairing-quadrupole balance, disclosed by the very precise results in 108Sn.

15. Contrasting properties of particle-particle and hole-hole excitations in 206Tl and 210Bi nuclei

Abstract: A complete-spectroscopy investigation of low-lying, low-spin states in the one-proton-hole and one-neutron-hole nucleus 206Tl has been performed by using thermal neutron capture and γ-coincidence technique with the FIPPS Ge array at ILL Grenoble. The new experimental results, together with data for the one-proton-particle and one-neutron-particle nucleus 210Bi (taken from a previous study done at ILL in the EXILL campaign), allowed for an extensive comparison with predictions of shell-model calculations performed with realistic interactions. No phenomenological adjustments were introduced in the calculations. In 210Bi, state energies, transition multipolarities and decay branchings agree well with theory for the three well separated multiplets of states which dominate the low-lying excitations. On the contrary, in 206Tl significant discrepancies are observed: in the same energy region, six multiplets were identified, with a significant mixing among them being predicted, as a consequence of the smaller energy separation between the active orbitals. The discrepancies in 206Tl are attributed to the larger uncertainties in the determination of the off-diagonal matrix elements of the realistic shell-model interaction with respect to the calculated diagonal matrix elements, the only ones playing a major role in the case of 210Bi. The work points to the need of more advanced approaches in the construction of the realistic interactions. Abstract: Cross sections and corresponding momentum distributions have been measured for the first time at zero degrees for the exotic nuclei obtained from a beam of 18O at 8.5 MeV/A impinging on a 1 mg/cm2 238U target. Sizable cross sections were found for the production of exotic species arising from the neutron transfer and proton removal from the projectile. Comparisons of experimental results with calculations based on deep-inelastic reaction models, taking into account the particle evaporation process, indicate that zero degree is a scattering angle at which the differential reaction cross section for production of exotic nuclei is at its maximum. This result is important in view of the new generation of zero degrees spectrometers under construction, such as the S3 separator at GANIL, for example. Abstract: A lifetime measurement of the 19/2− state in 207Pb has been performed using the Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift (RDDS) method. The nuclei of interest were produced in multi-nucleon transfer reactions induced by a 208Pb beam impinging on a 100Mo enriched target. The beam-like nuclei were detected and identified in terms of their atomic mass number in the VAMOS++ spectrometer while the prompt γ rays were detected by the AGATA tracking array. The measured large reduced transition probability B(E3,19/2−→13/2+)=40(8) W.u. is the first indication of the octupole phonon at high spin in 207Pb. An analysis in terms of a particle-octupole-vibration coupling model indicates that the measured B(E3) value in 207Pb is compatible with the contributions from single-phonon and single particle E3 as well as E3 strength arising from the double-octupole-phonon 6+ state, all adding coherently. A crucial aspect of the coupling model, namely the strong mixing between single-hole and the phonon-hole states, is confirmed in a realistic shell-model calculation. Abstract: The paper reviews recent developments in $$\gamma $$ γ -ray spectroscopy of the neutron-rich fragments produced in nuclear fission. This subject has been an intensive area of study spanning more than five decades. Here we highlight key results and describe the evolution of the associated experimental techniques since the last review papers in 1995 (I. Ahmad and W.R. Phillips, Rep. Prog. Phys. 58(11), 1415 (1995); J. H. Hamilton et al., Prog. Part. Nucl. Phys. 35, 635(1995)). Research themes in nuclear structure will be explored along with the fission reaction mechanism and the links to nuclear astrophysics and applications.

Abstract: The γ-ray decay of excited states of the one-valence-proton nucleus 133Sb has been studied using cold-neutron induced fission of 235U and 241Pu targets, during the EXILL campaign at the ILL reactor in Grenoble. By using a highly efficient HPGe array, coincidences between γ-rays prompt with the fission event and those delayed up to several tens of microseconds were investigated, allowing to observe, for the first time, high-spin excited states above the 16.6 μs isomer. Lifetimes analysis, performed by fast-timing techniques with LaBr3(Ce) scintillators, revealed a difference of almost two orders of magnitude in B(M1) strength for transitions between positive-parity medium-spin yrast states. The data are interpreted by a newly developed microscopic model which takes into account couplings between core excitations (both collective and non-collective) of the doubly magic nucleus 132Sn and the valence proton, using the Skyrme effective interaction in a consistent way. The results point to a fast change in the nature of particle-core excitations with increasing spin.

Abstract: Multi-Nucleon Transfer (MNT) reactions have been used for decades as a reaction mechanism, in order to populate excited states in nuclei far from stability and to perform nuclear structure studies. Nevertheless, the development of set-ups involving high acceptance tracking magnetic spectrometers (mainly existing in Europe), coupled with the Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) opens new possibilities, especially if they are used in conjunction with high-intensity stable beams or ISOL RIBs. In this article, we will discuss the capabilities of such set-ups aiming at different goals, including complete information in high-resolution spectroscopy as well as lifetime measurements.

Abstract: 9 pags., 8 figs., 4 tabs., Background: The Xe isotopic chain with four valence protons above the Z=50 shell closure is an ideal laboratory for the study of the evolution of nuclear deformation. At the N=82 shell closure, Xe136 presents all characteristics of a doubly closed shell nucleus with a spherical shape. In the very neutron-deficient isotopes close to N=50, the α-decay chain of Xe was investigated to probe the radioactive decay properties near the drip-line and the magicity of Sn100. Additionally, the Xe isotopes present higher order symmetries in the nuclear deformation such as the octupole degree of freedom near N=60 and N=90 or O(6) symmetry in stable isotopes. Purpose: The relevance of the O(6) symmetry has been investigated by measuring the spectroscopic quadrupole moment of the first excited states in Xe124. In the O(6) symmetry limit, the spectroscopic quadrupole moment of collective states is expected to be null. Method: A stable Xe124 beam with energies of 4.03A MeV and 4.11A MeV was used to bombard a natW target at the GANIL facility. Excited states were populated via the safe Coulomb excitation reaction. The collision of the heavy ions with a large Z at low energy make this reaction sensitive to the diagonal E2 matrix element of the excited states. The recoils were detected in the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer and the γ rays in the AGATA tracking array. The least squares fitting code gosia was used for the analysis to extract both E2 and M1 transitional and E2 diagonal matrix elements. Results: The rotational ground state band was populated up to the 81+ state as well as the 22+ and 42+ states. Using high precision spectroscopic data to constrain the gosia fit, the spectroscopic quadrupole moments of the 21+, 41+, and 61+ states were determined for the first time. Conclusions: The spectroscopic quadrupole moments were found to be negative, large, and constant in the ground state band underlining the prolate axially deformed ground state band of Xe124. The present experimental data confirm that the O(6) symmetry is substantially broken in Xe124., This work was supported by STFC(UK). Abstract: International audience; The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been installed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (LNL), Italy. In this installation, AGATA will consist, at the beginning, of 13 AGATA triple clusters (ATCs) with an angular coverage of 1π, and progressively the number of ATCs will increase up to a 2π angular coverage. This setup will exploit both stable and radioactive ion beams delivered by the Tandem–PIAVE-ALPI accelerator complex and the SPES facility. The new implementation of AGATA at LNL will be used in two different configurations, firstly one coupled to the PRISMA large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer and lately a second one at Zero Degrees, along the beam line. These two configurations will allow us to cover a broad physics program, using different reaction mechanisms, such as Coulomb excitation, fusion-evaporation, transfer and fission at energies close to the Coulomb barrier. These setups have been designed to be coupled with a large variety of complementary detectors such as charged particle detectors, neutron detectors, heavy-ion detectors, high-energy γ-ray arrays, cryogenic and gasjet targets and the plunger device for lifetime measurements. We present in this paper the conceptual design, characteristics and performance figures of this implementation of AGATA at LNL.

Abstract: The structure of the 11 / 2 1 + state in 131Sb was investigated at the LOHENGRIN spectrometer of Institut Laue-Langevin via neutron-induced fission of 235U and lifetime measurements, yielding T 1 / 2 = 3 ( 2 ) , at the edge of the sensitivity of the experimental method. This first result for the 11 / 2 1 + state half-life in neutron-rich Sb isotopes provides a quadrupole reduced transition probability to the ground state of B ( E 2 ) = 1.4 − 0.6 + 1.5 W.u., very close to the B ( E 2 ; 2 1 + → 0 1 + ) in 130Sn. Realistic shell-model calculations reproduce well both the experimental level scheme of 131Sb and the B ( E 2 ; 11 / 2 1 + → 7 / 2 1 + ) value, indicting a dominant 2 + ( 130 Sn ) ⊗ π g 7 / 2 core-proton coupled configuration for the 11 / 2 1 + state.

Abstract: Increasing attention has been paid in the recent years to the presence of Organic MicroPollutants (OMPs) in water, being considered a source of a high risk for public health and environment (Rodriguez-Narvaez et al., 2017). The present study belongs to a wide research activity carried out since 2018 and still ongoing having the aim to assess the occurrence with time and removal rate of OMPs in full-scale Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) (Di Marcantonio et al. 2020). The present paper shows the results of the monitoring activity conducted on the influent and effluent of 8 WWTPs focusing on 14 selected OMPs belonging to different classes (e.g. caffeine, illicit drugs, pharmaceuticals). The study activity included measuring in the same samples the traditional water quality parameters (e.g. COD, nitrogen species, TSS) to evaluate if there is any correlation between their removal and that of the selected OMPs. The investigated plants were chosen being representative of different treatment processes, of the type of final disposal of the treated water and the characteristics and extension of the area served by the sewage network. Finally, the environmental risk assessment was carried out based on the values of OMPs measured in the effluent of the plants.

Abstract: The γ decay from the high-lying states of 124Sn was measured using the inelastic scattering of 17O at 340 MeV. The emitted γ rays were detected with high resolution with the AGATA demonstrator array and the scattered ions were detected in two segmented ΔE–E silicon telescopes. The angular distribution was measured both for the γ rays and the scattered 17O ions. An accumulation of E1 strength below the particle threshold was found and compared with previous data obtained with (γ,γ′) and (α,α′γ) reactions. The present results of elastic scattering, and excitation of E2 and E1 states were analysed using the DWBA approach. From this comprehensive description the isoscalar component of the 1− excited states was extracted. The obtained values are based on the comparison of the data with DWBA calculations including a form factor deduced using a microscopic transition density. Abstract: 6 pags., 8 figs., 1 tab., Excited states in the neutron-deficient nucleus Tc87 have been studied via the fusion-evaporation reaction Fe54(Ar36,2n1p)Tc87 at 115 MeV beam energy. The AGATA γ-ray spectrometer coupled to the DIAMANT, NEDA, and Neutron Wall detector arrays for light-particle detection was used to measure the prompt coincidence of γ rays and light particles. Six transitions from the deexcitation of excited states belonging to a new band in Tc87 were identified by comparing γ-ray intensities in the spectra gated under different reaction channel selection conditions. The constructed level structure was compared with the shell model and total Routhian surface calculations. Abstract: International audience; High-resolution γ-ray spectroscopy of N18 is performed with the Advanced GAmma Tracking Array, following deep-inelastic processes induced by an O18 beam on a Ta181 target. Six states are newly identified, which together with the three known excitations exhaust all negative-parity excited states expected in N18 below the neutron threshold. Spin and parities are proposed for all located states on the basis of decay branchings and comparison with large-scale shell-model calculations performed in the p-sd space, with the YSOX interaction. Of particular interest is the location of the 01− and 12− excitations, which provide strong constrains for cross-shell p-sd matrix elements based on realistic interactions and help to simultaneously reproduce the ground and first-excited states in N16 and N18, for the first time. Understanding the N18 structure may also have significant impact on neutron-capture cross-section calculations in r-process modeling including light neutron-rich nuclei.

Abstract: International audience; “Stretched” states are examples of the simplest nuclear excitations in the continuum, thus offering an excellent testing ground for various theoretical approaches. The decay of the stretched single-particle state in 13C, located at 21.47 MeV, was investigated in an experiment performed recently at the Cyclotron Centre Bronowice (CCB) at IFJ PAN in Kraków. First experimental information on the proton and neutron decay channels of this resonance was obtained by employing coincidence measurement of protons inelastically scattered on the 13C target and γ rays from daughter nuclei. The new experimental findings will be used for testing predictions obtained by the Gamow Shell Model calculations.

Abstract: Excited states of 17N, 18N and 19N were investigated through the measurement of gamma rays, following their population via deep-inelastic reactions induced by an 18O beam (7 MeV/u) on a thick 181Ta target. The experimental setup comprised the AGATA+PARIS detection system, coupled to the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer. In the 17N nucleus, the analysis of gamma-ray transitions de-exciting two states around 4-5 MeV clearly pointed to discrepancies with the lifetime values reported in literature. Three new gamma rays were observed in 18N at the energies of 1662.3 (3) keV, 2073.4 (8) keV and 2300.9 (8) keV, and hints for other two new transitions around 1566 keV and 1720 keV were found. In addition, a new transition with energy of 2489.7 (8) keV was observed in 19N.

Abstract: The low-lying excited states in the neutron-deficient $N = Z + 1$ nucleus $^{87}_{43}$Tc$_{44}$ have been studied via the fusion-evaporation reaction $^{54}$Fe $(^{36}Ar, 2n1p)$ $^{87}$Tc at the Grand Accelerateur National d'Ions Lourds (GANIL), France. The AGATA spectrometer was used in conjunction with the auxiliary NEDA, Neutron Wall, and DIAMANT detector arrays to measure coincident prompt γ rays, neutrons, and charged particles emitted in the reaction. A level scheme of $^{87}$Tc from the $(9/2^+_{g.s})$ state to the $( 33 / 2^+_1$) state was established based on six mutually coincident γ -ray transitions. The constructed level structure exhibits a rotational behavior with a sharp backbending at $ℏω ≈ 0.50$ MeV. A decrease in alignment frequency and increase in alignment sharpness in the odd-mass isotonic chains around $N=44$ is proposed as an effect of the enhanced isoscalar neutron-proton interactions in odd-mass nuclei when approaching the $N=Z$ line.

Abstract: A novel Monte Carlo technique has been developed to determine lifetimes of excited states in the tens-to-hundreds femtoseconds range in products of low-energy heavy-ion binary reactions, with complex velocity distributions. The method is based on a detailed study of Doppler-broadened $$\gamma $$ γ -ray lineshapes. Its relevance is demonstrated in connection with the $$^{18}\text {O}(7.0\, \text {MeV/u})+\,^{181}\text {Ta}$$ 18 O ( 7.0 MeV/u ) + 181 Ta experiment, performed at GANIL with the AGATA+VAMOS+PARIS setup, to study neutron-rich O, C, N, ... nuclei. Excited states in $$^{17}\text {O}$$ 17 O and $$^{19}\text {O}$$ 19 O , with known lifetimes, are used to validate the method over the $$\sim 20{-}400\,\text {fs}$$ ∼ 20 - 400 fs lifetime-sensitivity range. Emphasis is given to the unprecedented position resolution provided by $$\gamma $$ γ -tracking arrays, which turns out to be essential for reaching the required accuracy in Doppler-shift correction. The technique is anticipated to be an important tool for lifetime investigations in exotic neutron-rich nuclei, produced with intense ISOL-type beams.

Abstract: A detailed investigation on the relative isotopic distributions has been carried out for the first time in case of even-even correlated fission fragments for the $^{235}\mathrm{U}({n}_{\text{th}},f$) fission reaction. High-statistics data were obtained in a prompt $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray spectroscopy measurement during the EXILL campaign at ILL, Grenoble, France. The extensive off-line analysis of the coincidence data have been carried out using four different coincidence methods. Combining the results from two-dimensional $\ensuremath{\gamma}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and three-dimensional $\ensuremath{\gamma}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ coincidence analysis, a comprehensive picture of the relative isotopic yield distributions of the even-even neutron-rich fission fragments has emerged. The experimentally observed results have been substantiated by the theoretical calculations based on a novel approach of isospin conservation, and a reasonable agreement has been obtained. The calculations following the semiempirical GEF model have also been carried out. The results from the GEF model calculations are found to be in fair agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract: In this paper, we report a detailed study on the de-excitation of the 46Ti compound nucleus populated by means of four different reactions: 16O + 30Si at 7 and 8 AMeV, 18O + 28Si at 7 AMeV and 19F + 27Al at 7 AMeV. The GARFIELD detection array was used to measure the light charged particles and the heavy fragments emitted. This setup covers a large fraction of the solid angle with high-granularity. Complete events are chosen through total charge (Z TOT = 22) detection. Fusion-evaporation events are selected based on the condition that only one heavy fragment is detected in coincidence with the light charged particles. The analysis of global observables, such as charge distribution and light charged particle multiplicities, is compatible with the formation of a thermalized compound nucleus for all the four reactions. Nevertheless, an enhanced emission of α-particles with respect to a pure statistical picture is observed at very forward angles (α-particles.

Abstract: Purpose. - To evaluate long terms outcomes of botulinum toxin in infantile esotropia by measuring the amount of microtropia 24 months after injection. Secondary purpose was to identify predictive factors of microtropia. Methods. - A retrospective, single-center study was performed at the university medical centerin Bordeaux between 2001 and 2018, including all patients with infantile esotropia greater than 20 D. All patients received 5 or 7,5 IU of botulinum toxin A in each medial rectus, once or twice depending on the angle of deviation after the first injection and after wearing full optical correction at least two months. We noted the angle at 1, 6, 12 and 24 months, the occurrence of any complications and the need for later strabismus surgery. The primary endpoint was the achievement of a microtropia less than 8 diopters (D) at 24 months post-injection. We evaluated the predictive factors for microtropia with a Fischer's test. Results. - We included 30 patients with esotropia greater than 20 D. The mean follow-up after injection was 48 months +/- 30. The mean age was 16.24 months (7-29 months) with a female predominance in the population (SR = 0.43). The mean pre-injection deviation was 41.25 +/- 12.17 D. The majority of patients were mildly (40%) or moderately (40%) hyperopic. At 24 months, 46.7% microtropias were obtained (95% CI: 28.9%-64.5%). The change in mean angle at 1, 6,12 and 24 months post-injection was -8.57 +/- 25.21 D; 14.48 +/- 13.40 D; 18.38 +/- 12.07 D and 21.23 +/- 14.97 D, respectively. No factors were predictive of microtropia. Of the 30 children, 3 had transient ptosis requiring strips and 12 showed an exotropia at 1 month. All complications were self-limited and without consequences. 3 children had a second injection of botulinum toxin, which in 2/3 of the cases resulted in a long-lasting microtropia. 26.7% (n = 8) of the children underwent secondary surgery. Obtaining a microtropia 24 months after injection statistically significantly reduced the need for secondary strabismus surgery: 92.9% P = 0.039% CI 95% (0.002; 1.0606). Conclusion. - Botulinum toxin appears to be a less invasive and more conservative alternative to surgery in children with infantile esotropia. In 46.7% of cases, microtropia is achieved. An improvement was noted in 90% (n = 27) of the children with a reduction of half (21.23 D) of the mean post-injection angle at 24 months. Nous avons évalué les facteurs prédictifs de la microtropie par un test de Fischer. Résultats: Nous avons inclus 30 patients ayant une ésotropie supérieure à 20 D avec un délai moyen de suivi post-injection de 48 mois ± 30. L’âge moyen était de 16,24 mois (7–29 mois) avec une prédominance féminine dans la population (sex ratio SR = 0,43). L’angle moyen pré-injection était de 41,25 ± 12,17 D. Il y avait une majorité d’hypermétropes légers (40 %) et modérés (40 %). À 24 mois, on obtenait 46,7 % de microtropies (intervalle de confiance : IC 95 % : 28,9 %–64,5 %). L’évolution de l’angle moyen à 1,6,12 et 24 mois post-injection était respectivement de −8,57 ± 25,21 D ; 14,48 ± 13,40 D ; 18,38 ± 12,07 D et 21,23 ± 14,97 D. Aucun facteur n’était prédictif de l’obtention d’une microtropie. Parmi les 30 enfants, 3 ont eu des ptôsis transitoires nécessitant la pose de strips et 12 ont présenté une exotropie à 1 mois. Toutes les complications étaient spontanément résolutives et sans conséquences. 3 enfants ont eu une seconde injection de toxine botulique permettant dans 2/3 des cas l’obtention d’une microtropie durable. 26,7 % (n = 8) des enfants ont été opérés secondairement ; l’obtention d’une microtropie à 24 mois diminuait de façon statistiquement significative les chirurgies secondaires du strabisme : p = 0,039 % IC 95 % (0,002 ; 1,0606). Conclusion: La toxine botulique semble être une alternative moins invasive et plus conservatrice que la chirurgie chez les enfants présentant une ésotropie précoce. Elle permet l’obtention d’une microtropie dans 46,7 % des cas. On notait une amélioration chez 90 % (n = 27) des enfants avec une réduction de la moitié (21,23 D) de l’angle moyen post-injection à 24 mois. Lorsqu’elle est efficace elle réduit significativement les chirurgies secondaires.

Abstract: Background and importance The introduction of the pharmacy based central intravenous additive service (CIVAS) enabled the batches production of ready-to-administer, non-hazardous intravenous drugs by using the robotic system APOTECAunit. The clinical benefits in terms of a higher quality aseptic process, reduced medication errors and increased quality control testing have been demonstrated. Aim and objectives The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of the fully automatised CIVAS on the working efficiency of the wards by measuring the time saved in daily nursing practice. Material and methods The study was conducted over 3 months with data collected before and after introducing the CIVAS. Overall, three wards were analysed: inpatient haematology (IH), cardiac surgical (CS) and infectious diseases (ID). The nursing staff was observed daily for 4 weeks. Different tasks associated with the following intravenous drugs supplied by the CIVAS were recorded: ondansetron, palonosetron, cefazoline, piperacillin–tazobactam, ceftriaxone and dexamethasone. The average working time spent on managing intravenous drugs was calculated per full time equivalent (FTE), including direct activities (intravenous drug preparation) and indirect activities (procurement of drugs and medical devices, drugs inventory management, drug ordering). 1.0 FTE was equivalent to a nurse working 8.0 hours per day, 5 days per week. Results The overall time spent on managing intravenous drugs decreased from 1.6 to 0.7 hours/day/FTE in the IH ward, from 0.75 to 0.15 hours/day/FTE in the CS ward and from 2.1 to 0.43 hours/day/FTE in the ID ward. Before implementing the CIVAS, on average 1.0 FTE spent 0.5 hours/day on preparing intravenous drugs, whereas the intravenous drug preparation time was reduced to zero afterwards in each of the three wards. The time spent on procurement decreased by 80% in the IH ward, by 60% in the CS ward and by 75% in the ID ward. The nursing staff shortened the time required for drug inventory management by 33% in the CS ward and by 50% in the IH and ID wards. In all wards, ordering of drugs was reduced by at least 50%. Conclusion and relevance The study showed that the centralised, automated preparation of intravenous drugs optimised the working efficiency of the wards, thereby allowing the nursing staff to dedicate more time to perform tasks directly involved with patient care. Abstract: Background and importance In 2014, the hospital pharmacy started a project to implement a central intravenous additive service (CIVAS) unit A pre-feasibility study was performed, a new class C clean room equipped with the robotic system APOTECA unit was built and the fully automated aseptic production process was validated In 2016, the CIVAS started producing standard doses of chemotherapy supportive treatments (palonosetron, ondansetron, dexamethasone) in readyto- administer form for the oncology and haematology units The production was then shifted to antibiotics (cefazolin, piperacillin-tazobactam, ceftriaxone) and pantoprazole for infectious disease, cardiac surgery and emergency medicine departments Currently, the in-advance production of batch preparations at CIVAS is mainly based on daily consumption and performed by one pharmacy technician and one pharmacist (0 25 full time equivalent each) The working day is from 8am to 4pm (Monday-Friday) Aim and objectives The aim of this study was to analyse the performance of the CIVAS over the past year and evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the increasing demands for sterile antibiotics by emergency departments Material and methods Overall CIVAS production, dosage accuracy and average production time (APT) of each ready-toadminister preparation were evaluated over a period of 12 months (from September 2019 to August 2020) Data were collected from the APOTECA statistical tool Results 12 215 preparations were compounded, of which 26% were in syringe (1 g cefazolin, APT 125 s) and 74% in 100 mL NaCl 0 9% infusion bags (55% for 4 5 g piperacillin-tazobactam, ATP 203 s;14% for 40 mg pantoprazole, ATP 196 s;5% for 2 g ceftriaxone, ATP 177 s) Average dosage accuracy for all preparations was 98 9±1% During the peak of Italy's COVID-19 outbreak (March 2020), weekly production increased by 28% The production of pantoprazole remained steady, while piperacillin-tazobactam and ceftriaxone for the emergency departments increased considerably (+19% and 9%, respectively) and cefazolin for the cardiac surgery department decreased by 26% Conclusion and relevance Implementation of a fully automated CIVAS allows measuring and controlling every step of the production process for ready-to-administer preparations The study showed that CIVAS met increasing demands for sterile antibiotics during the pandemic crisis, thereby supporting the emergency units and providing the highest level of quality and safety

Abstract: When a heavy atomic nucleus splits (fission), the resulting fragments are observed to emerge spinning1; this phenomenon has been a mystery in nuclear physics for over 40 years2,3. The internal generation of typically six or seven units of angular momentum in each fragment is particularly puzzling for systems that start with zero, or almost zero, spin. There are currently no experimental observations that enable decisive discrimination between the many competing theories for the mechanism that generates the angular momentum4–12. Nevertheless, the consensus is that excitation of collective vibrational modes generates the intrinsic spin before the nucleus splits (pre-scission). Here we show that there is no significant correlation between the spins of the fragment partners, which leads us to conclude that angular momentum in fission is actually generated after the nucleus splits (post-scission). We present comprehensive data showing that the average spin is strongly mass-dependent, varying in saw-tooth distributions. We observe no notable dependence of fragment spin on the mass or charge of the partner nucleus, confirming the uncorrelated post-scission nature of the spin mechanism. To explain these observations, we propose that the collective motion of nucleons in the ruptured neck of the fissioning system generates two independent torques, analogous to the snapping of an elastic band. A parameterization based on occupation of angular momentum states according to statistical theory describes the full range of experimental data well. This insight into the role of spin in nuclear fission is not only important for the fundamental understanding and theoretical description of fission, but also has consequences for the γ-ray heating problem in nuclear reactors13,14, for the study of the structure of neutron-rich isotopes15,16, and for the synthesis and stability of super-heavy elements17,18. γ-ray spectroscopy experiments on the origin of spin in the products of nuclear fission of spin-zero nuclei suggest that the fission fragments acquire their spin after scission, rather than before.
