In stars, metallicity is usually traced using Fe, while in nebulae, O serves as the preferred proxy. Both elements have different nucleosynthetic origins and are not directly comparable. Additionally, in ionized nebulae, Fe is heavily depleted onto dust grains. We investigate the distribution of Fe gas abundances in a sample of 452 star-forming nebulae with \feiii~$\lambda 4658$ detections and their relationship with O and N. Additionally, we analyze the depletion of Fe onto dust grains in photoionized environments. We homogeneously determine the chemical abundances with direct determinations of electron temperature ($T_e$), considering the effect of possible internal variations of this parameter. We adopt a sample of 300 Galactic stars to interpret the nebular findings. We find a moderate linear correlation ($r=-0.59$) between Fe/O and O/H. In turn, we report a stronger correlation ($r=-0.80$) between Fe/N and N/H. We interpret the tighter correlation as evidence of Fe and N being produced on similar timescales while Fe-dust depletion scales with the Fe availability. The apparently flat distribution between Fe/N and N/H in Milky Way stars supports this interpretation. We find that when 12+log(O/H)<7.6, the nebulae seem to reach a plateau value around $\text{log(Fe/O)} \approx -1.7$. If this trend is confirmed, it would be consistent with a very small amount of Fe-dust in these systems, similar to what is observed in high-z galaxies discovered by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). We derive a relationship that allows us to approximate the fraction of Fe trapped into dust in ionized nebulae. If the O-dust scales in the same way, its possible contribution in low metallicity nebulae would be negligible. After analyzing the Fe/O abundances in J0811+4730 and J1631+4426, we do not see evidence of the presence of very massive stars with $M_\text{init}>300M_{\odot}$ in these systems., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

The Orion Molecular Cloud complex, one of the nearest (D = 406 pc) and most extensively studied massive star-forming regions, is ideal for constraining the physics of stellar feedback, but its ~12 deg diameter on the sky requires a dedicated approach to mapping ionized gas structures within and around the nebula. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-V) Local Volume Mapper (LVM) is a new optical integral field unit (IFU) that will map the ionized gas within the Milky Way and Local Group galaxies, covering 4300 deg^2 of the sky with the new LVM Instrument. We showcase optical emission line maps from LVM covering 12 deg^2 inside of the Orion belt region, with 195,000 individual spectra combined to produce images at 0.07 pc (35.3") resolution. This is the largest IFU map made (to date) of the Milky Way, and contains well-known nebulae (the Horsehead Nebula, Flame Nebula, IC 434, and IC 432), as well as ionized interfaces with the neighboring dense Orion B molecular cloud. We resolve the ionization structure of each nebula, and map the increase in both the [SII]/Ha and [NII]/Ha line ratios at the outskirts of nebulae and along the ionization front with Orion B. [OIII] line emission is only spatially resolved within the center of the Flame Nebula and IC 434, and our ~0.1 pc scale line ratio diagrams show how variations in these diagnostics are lost as we move from the resolved to the integrated view of each nebula. We detect ionized gas emission associated with the dusty bow wave driven ahead of the star sigma Orionis, where the stellar wind interacts with the ambient interstellar medium. The Horsehead Nebula is seen as a dark occlusion of the bright surrounding photo-disassociation region. Contrastive learning (CL) has emerged as a potent tool for building meaningful latent representations of galaxy properties across a broad spectrum of wavelengths, ranging from optical and infrared to radio frequencies. These representations facilitate a variety of downstream tasks, including galaxy classification, similarity searches, and parameter estimation, which is why they are often referred to as foundation models. In this study, we employ CL on the latest extended DR from CALIFA survey, which encompasses 895 galaxies with enhanced spatial resolution. We demonstrate that CL can be applied to IFU surveys, even with small training sets, to meaningful embedding where galaxies are well-separated based on their physical properties. We discover that the strongest correlations in the embedding space are observed with the EW of Ha morphology, stellar metallicity, age, stellar surface mass density, the [NII]/Ha ratio, and stellar mass, in descending order of correlation strength. Additionally, we illustrate the feasibility of unsupervised separation of galaxy populations along the SFMS, successfully identifying the BC and the RS in a two-cluster scenario, and the GV population in a three-cluster scenario. Our findings indicate that galaxy luminosity profiles have minimal impact on the construction of the embedding space, suggesting that morphology and spectral features play a more significant role in distinguishing between galaxy populations. Moreover, we explore the use of CL for detecting variations in galaxy population distributions across different environments, including voids, clusters, filaments and walls. Nonetheless, we acknowledge the limitations of the CL and our specific training set in detecting subtle differences in galaxy properties, such as the presence of an AGN or other minor scale variations that exceed the scope of primary parameters like stellar mass or morphology., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures

We have learnt in the last decades that the majority of galaxies belong to high density regions interconnected in a sponge-like fashion. This large-scale structure is characterised by clusters, filaments, walls, where most galaxies concentrate, but also under-dense regions, called voids. The void regions and the galaxies within represent an ideal place for the study of galaxy formation and evolution as they are largely unaffected by the complex physical processes that transform galaxies in high-density environments. These void galaxies can hold the key as well to answer current challenges to the $\Lambda$CDM paradigm. The Calar Alto Void Integral-field Treasury surveY (CAVITY) is a Legacy project approved by the Calar Alto Observatory to obtain spatially resolved spectroscopic information of $\sim300$ void galaxies in the Local Universe (0.005 < z < 0.050) covering from -17.0 to -21.5 in $\rm r$ band absolute magnitude. It officially started in January 2021 and has been awarded 110 useful dark observing nights at the 3.5 m telescope using the PMAS spectrograph. Complementary follow-up projects including deep optical imaging, integrated, as well as resolved CO data, and integrated HI spectra, have joint the PMAS observations and naturally complete the scientific aim of characterising galaxies in cosmic voids. The extension data has been denominated CAVITY+. The data will be available to the whole community in different data releases, the first of which is planned for July 2024, and it will provide the community with PMAS data cubes for around 100 void galaxies through a user friendly, and well documented, database platform. We present a catalog of $\sim$52,000 extragalactic HII regions and their spectroscopic properties obtained using Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) from MUSE observations. The sample analyzed in this study contains 678 galaxies within the nearby Universe (0.004 < z < 0.06) covering different morphological types and a wide range of stellar masses (6 < log(M$_{*}$/M$_{\odot}$) < 13). Each galaxy was analyzed using the Pipe3D and pyHIIextractor codes to obtain information of the ionized gas and underlying stellar populations. Specifically, the fluxes, equivalent widths, velocities and velocity dispersions of 30 emission lines covering the wavelength range between $\lambda$4750A to $\lambda$9300A, were extracted and were used to estimate luminosity weighted ages and metallicities of the underlying stellar populations from each HII region (of the original sample we detect HII regions in 539 galaxies). In addition, we introduce and apply a novel method and independent of any intrinsic physical property to estimate and decontaminate the contribution of the diffuse ionized gas. Using the final catalog, we explore the dependence of properties of the HII regions on different local and global galaxy parameters: (i) Hubble type, (ii) stellar mass, (iii) galactocentric distance, and (iv) the age and metallicity of the underlying/neighbour stellar populations. We confirm known relations between properties of the HII regions and the underlying stellar populations (in particular with the age) uncovered using data of lower spatial and spectral resolution. We present the Bidimensional Exploration of the warm-Temperature Ionised gaS (BETIS) project, designed for the spatial and spectral study of the diffuse ionised gas (DIG) in a selection of nearby spiral galaxies observed with the MUSE integral-field spectrograph. Our primary objective is to investigate the various ionisation mechanisms at play within the DIG. We analysed the distribution of high- and low-ionisation species in the optical spectra of the sample on a spatially resolved basis. We introduced a new methodology for spectroscopically defining the DIG, optimised for galaxies of different resolutions. We also examined the suitability of using Ha equivalent width (EWha) as a proxy for defining the DIG and its associated ionisation regime. The average radial distribution of the main line ratios are enhanced in the DIG. It follows similar trends between the DIG regime and the HII regions, as well as the Ha surface brightness, indicating a correlation between the ionisation of these species in both the DIG and the HII regions. The DIG loci in diagnostic diagrams are found within the line ratios that correspond to photoionisation due to the star formation. There is a noticeable offset correspondent to fast shocks. However, an individual diagnosis performed for each galaxy reveals that all the DIG in these galaxies can be attributed to photoionisation from star formation. The offset is primarily due to the contribution of Seyfert galaxies in our sample, which is closely aligned with models of ionisation from fast shocks and galactic outflows, thus mimicking the DIG emission. Our results indicate that galaxies exhibiting active galactic nucleus activity should be considered separately when conducting a general analysis of the DIG ionisation mechanisms, since this emission is indistinguishable from high-excitation DIG., Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures, A&A accepted

The usual approach to classify the ionizing source using optical spectroscopy is based on the use of diagnostic diagrams that compares the relative strength of pairs of collisitional metallic lines (e.g., [O iii] and [N ii]) with respect to recombination hydrogen lines (e.g., H{\beta} and H{\alpha}). Despite of being accepted as the standard procedure, it present known problems, including confusion regimes and/or limitations related to the required signal-to-noise of the involved emission lines. These problems affect not only our intrinsic understanding of inter-stellar medium and its poroperties, but also fundamental galaxy properties, such as the star-formation rate and the oxygen abundance, and key questions just as the fraction of active galactic nuclei, among several others. We explore the existing alternatives in the literature to minimize the confusion among different ionizing sources and proposed a new simple diagram that uses the equivalent width and the velocity dispersion from one single emission line, H{\alpha}, to classify the ionizing sources. We use aperture limited and spatial resolved spectroscopic data in the nearby Universe (z{\sim}0.01) to demonstrate that the new diagram, that we called WHaD, segregates the different ionizing sources in a more efficient way that previously adopted procedures. A new set of regions are defined in this diagram to select betweeen different ionizing sources. The new proposed diagram is well placed to determine the ionizing source when only H{\alpha} is available, or when the signal-to-noise of the emission lines involved in the classical diagnostic diagrams (e.g., H{\beta})., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publishing in A&A

Galaxies are expected to accrete pristine gas from their surroundings to sustain their star formation over cosmic timescales. Its lower abundance affects the metallicity of the ISM in which stars are born, leaving chemical imprints in the stellar populations. We measure the amount of pristine gas that galaxies accrete during their lifetime, using information on the ages and abundances of their stellar populations and a chemical evolution model. We also aim to determine the efficiency of star formation over time. We derived star formation histories and metallicity histories for a sample of 8523 galaxies from the MaNGA survey. We use the former to predict the evolution of the metallicity in a closed-box scenario, and estimate for each epoch the gas accretion rate required to match these predictions with the measured stellar metallicity. Using only chemical parameters, we find that the history of gas accretion depends on the mass of galaxies. More massive galaxies accrete more gas and at higher redshifts than less massive galaxies, which accrete their gas over longer periods. We also find that galaxies with a higher star formation rate at z = 0 have a more persistent accretion history for a given mass. The star formation efficiency shows similar correlations: early-type galaxies and higher-mass galaxies had a higher efficiency in the past, and it declined such that they are less efficient in the present. Our analysis of individual galaxies shows that compactness affects the peak star formation efficiency that galaxies reach, and that the slope of the efficiency history of galaxies with current star formation is flat. Our results support the hypothesis that a steady and substantial supply of pristine gas is required for persistent star formation in galaxies. Galactic interactions and subsequent mergers are a paramount channel for galaxy evolution. In this work, we use the data from 236 star forming CALIFA galaxies with integrated molecular gas observations in their central region (approximately within an effective radius) -- from the APEX millimeter telescope and the CARMA millimeter telescope array. This sample includes isolated (126 galaxies) and interacting galaxies in different merging stages (110 galaxies; from pairs, merging and post-merger galaxies). We show that the impact of interactions and mergers in the center of galaxies is revealed as an increase in the fraction of molecular gas (compared to isolated galaxies). Furthermore, our results suggest that the change in star formation efficiency is the main driver for both an enhancement and/or suppression of the central star formation -- except in merging galaxies where the enhanced star formation appears to be driven by an increase of molecular gas. We suggest that gravitational torques due to the interaction and subsequent merger transport cold molecular gas inwards, increasing the gas fraction without necessarily increasing star formation., Comment: 3 Figures, 13 Pages. We present the analysis performed using the pyPipe3D pipeline for the 895 galaxies that comprises the eCALIFA data release Sanchez et al. submitted, data with a significantly improved spatial resolution (1.0-1.5"/FWHM). We include a description of (i) the analysis performed by the pipeline, (ii) the adopted datamodel for the derived spatially resolved properties and (iii) the catalog of integrated, characteristics and slope of the radial gradients for a set of observational and physical parameters derived for each galaxy. We illustrate the results of the analysis (i) using the NGC\,2906 as an archetypal galaxy, showing the spatial distribution of the different derived parameters and exploring in detail the properties of the ionized gas, and (ii) showing distribution of the spatial resolved ionized gas across the classical [OIII]/H$\beta$ vs. [NII]/H$\alpha$ for the whole galaxy sample. In general our results agree with previous published ones, however, tracing radial patterns and segregating individual ionized structures is improved when using the current dataset. This paper describes the extended data release of the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey (eDR). It comprises science-grade quality data for 895 galaxies obtained with the PMAS/PPak instrument at the 3.5 m telescope at the Calar Alto Observatory along the last 12 years, using the V500 setup (3700-7500{\AA}, 6{\AA}/FWHM) and the CALIFA observing strategy. It includes galaxies of any morphological type, star-formation stage, a wide range of stellar masses ($\sim$10$^7$ 10$^{12}$ Msun ), at an average redshift of $\sim$0.015 (90\% within 0.005$<$z$<$0.05). Primarily selected based on the projected size and apparent magnitude, we demonstrate that it can be volume corrected resulting in a statistically limited but representative sample of the population of galaxies in the nearby Universe. All the data were homogeneous re-reduced, introducing a set of modifications to the previous reduction. The most relevant is the development and implementation of a new cube-reconstruction algorithm that provides with an (almost) seeing-limited spatial resolution (FWHM PSF $\sim$1.0").To illustrate the usability and quality of the data, we extracted two aperture spectra for each galaxy (central 1.5" and fully integrated), and analyze them using pyFIT3D. We obtain a set of observational and physical properties of both the stellar populations and the ionized gas, that have been compared for the two apertures, exploring their distributions as a function of the stellar masses and morphologies of the galaxies, comparing with recent results in the literature. Using spatially-resolved fossil record analysis on a large sample of 'red and dead' elliptical galaxies (classical ellipticals, CLEs) from the MaNGA/SDSS-IV DR15 survey, we reconstruct the archaeological evolution of their radial gradients in mass-to-luminosity ratio ($M/L$), $g-r$ color, and specific star formation (SF) rate. We also calculate other metrics that quantify the inside-out SF quenching and external mass growth processes. The $M/L$ gradients, $\nabla\Upsilon_{\star}$, are approximately flat at high look-back times ($t_{\rm lb}$), but then they become negative and steeper until an epoch, when this trend reverses. These trends are shifted to later epochs the less massive the galaxies are. Color gradients follow qualitatively similar trends. We find that these trends are mainly driven by strong inside-out quenching, without significant outer growth or structural changes overall. Our results suggest a scenario where the main progenitors of local CLE galaxies evolved quasi-passively after an early dissipative phase, but underwent radial photometric changes due to the inside-out quenching that led to the systematic decrease of $\nabla\Upsilon_{\star}$ and to an increase of the light-weighted radius. The late reversing of $\nabla\Upsilon_{\star}$, $t_{\rm lb}\approx2-4$ Gyr, roughly coincides with the global quenching of the CLE galaxies. We have pushed archaeological inferences to the limit, but thanks to the large number of objects and an understanding of how the caveats and assumptions affect our results, we conclude that they offer an average description of evolutionary behaviors of CLE progenitors that is valid at least qualitatively., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures. The diagram comparing the flux ratio of the [OIII] and H$\beta$ emission lines with the total stellar mass of galaxies (also known as the mass-excitation diagram, MEx) has been widely used to classify the ionization mechanism in high redshift galaxies between star formation and active galactic nuclear ones. This diagram was mainly derived using single-fiber spectroscopy from the SDSS-DR7 survey. In this study, we revise this diagram using the central and integrated spectral measurement from the entire Integral Field Spectroscopic MaNGA sample. Our results suggest that along with the physical parameters of this diagram, the equivalent width of the H$\alpha$ emission line is also required to constrain the ionization mechanism of a high-redshifted galaxy. It has been suggested that the gravitational potential can have a significant role in suppressing the star formation in the nearby galaxies. To establish observational constrains on this scenario, we investigate the connection between the dynamics, through the circular velocity curves (CVCs) as a proxy of the inner gravitational potential, and star formation quenching in 215 non-active galaxies across Hubble sequence from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey. Our results show that galaxies with similar CVCs tend to have a certain star-formation quenching pattern. To explore these findings in more details, we construct kpc-resolved relations of the equivalent width of the H$\alpha$ ($W_{{\rm H}\alpha}$) versus the amplitude ($V_c$) and shape ($\beta= d\ln V_c/ d\ln R$) of the circular velocity at given radius. We find that the $W_{{\rm H}\alpha}-V_c$ is a declining relationship, where the retired regions of the galaxies (the ones with $W_{{\rm H}\alpha}$ values below 3 \r{A}) tend to have higher $V_c$. Differently, $W_{{\rm H}\alpha}-\beta$ is a bi-modal relationship, characterised by two peaks: concentration of the star forming regions at a positive $\beta$ (rising CVC) and another one of the retired regions with a negative $\beta$ (declining CVC). Our results show that both the amplitude of the CVC, driven by the mass of the galaxies, and the shape of the CVC, reflecting the internal structure of the galaxies, play an important role in galaxy's quenching history., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

We present here the analysis performed using the pyPipe3D pipeline for the final MaNGA dataset included in the SDSS seventeenth data-release. This dataset comprises more than 10,000 individual datacubes, being the integral field spectroscopy galaxy survey with the largest number of galaxies. pyPipe3D processes the IFS datacubes to extract spatially-resolved spectroscopic properties of both the stellar population and the ionized-gas emission lines. A brief summary of the properties of the sample and the characteristics of the analyzed data are included. The article provides details on (i) the performed analysis, (ii) a description of the pipeline, (iii) the adopted stellar population library, (iv) the morphological and photometric analysis, (v) the adopted datamodel for the derived spatially resolved properties and (vi) the individual integrated and characteristic galaxy properties included in a final catalog. Comparisons with results from a previous version of the pipeline for earlier data releases and from other tools using this dataset are included. A practical example on how to use of the full dataset, and final catalog illustrates how to handle the delivered product. Using the largest sample of galaxies observed with an optical integral field unit (IFU, the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey, $\sim$10000 targets), we derive the radial distribution of the physical properties obtained from the stellar continuum and the ionized-gas emission lines. Given the large sample, we are able to explore the impact of the total stellar mass and morphology by averaging those radial distributions for different bins of both global properties. We use a piece-wise analysis to characterize the slopes of the gradients from those properties at different galactocentric distances. In general we find that most of the properties -- derived from both the stellar continuum and the ionized gas emission lines -- exhibit a negative gradient with a secondary impact by global properties such as the total stellar mass or morphology. Our results confirm the intimate interplay between the properties of the stellar component and those of the ionized gas at local (kpc) scales in order to set the observed gradients. Furthermore, the resemblance of the gradients for similar global properties (in particular for the stellar parameters) indicates statistical similar histories of star formation and chemical enrichment with an initial radial gas distribution following the potential of the galaxy., Comment: 58 pages. 59 Figures. We present a new code named pyHIIextractor, which detects and extracts the main features (positions and radii) of clumpy ionized regions, i.e. candidate HII regions, using H{\alpha} emission line images. Our code is optimized to be used on the dataproducts provided by the Pipe3D pipeline (or dataproducts with such a format), applied to high spatial resolution Integral Field Spectroscopy data (like that provided by the AMUSING++ compilation, using MUSE). The code provides the properties of both the underlying stellar population and the emission lines for each detected H ii candidate. Furthermore, the code delivers a novel estimation of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) component, independent of its physical properties, which enables a decontamination of the properties of the HII regions from the DIG. Using simulated data, mimicking the expected observations of spiral galaxies, we characterise pyHIIextractor and its ability to extract the main properties of the H ii regions (and the DIG), including the line fluxes, ratios and equivalent widths. Finally, we compare our code with other such tools adopted in the literature, which have been developed or used for similar purposes: pyhIIexplorer, SourceExtractor, HIIphot, and astrodendro. We conclude that pyHIIextractor exceeds the performance of previous tools in aspects such as the number of recovered regions and the distribution of sizes and fluxes (an improvement that is especially noticeable for the faintest and smallest regions). pyHIIextractor is therefore an optimals tool to detect candidate HII regions, offering an accurate estimation of their properties and a good decontamination of the DIG component., Comment: Submitted for publishing in RASTI, 26 pages, 14 figures

We present an extensive exploration of the impact of 29 physical parameters in the oxygen abundance for a sample of 299 star-forming galaxies extracted from the extended CALIFA sample. We corroborate that the stellar mass is the physical parameter that better traces the observed oxygen abundance (i.e., the mass-metallicity relation, MZR), while other physical parameters could play a potential role in shaping this abundance, but with a lower significant impact. We find that the functional form that best describes the MZR is a third-order polynomial function. From the residuals between this best functional form and the MZR, we find that once considered the impact of the mass in the oxygen abundance, the other physical parameters do not play a significant secondary role in shaping the oxygen abundance in these galaxies (including the gas fraction or the star formation rate). Our analysis suggests that the origin of the MZR is related to the chemical enrichment evolution of the interstellar medium due, most likely, to the build-up of stellar mass in these star-forming galaxies., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables

We present a new version of the FIT3D and Pipe3D codes, two packages to derive properties of the stellar populations and the ionized emission lines from optical spectroscopy and integral field spectroscopy data respectively. The new codes have been fully transcribed to Python from the original Perl and C versions, modifying the algorithms when needed to make use of the unique capabilities of this language with the main goals of (1) respecting as much as possible the original philosophy of the algorithms, (2) maintaining a full compatibility with the original version in terms of the format of the required input and produced output files, and (3) improving the efficiency and accuracy of the algorithms, and solving known (and newly discovered) bugs. The complete package is freely distributed, with an available repository online. pyFIT3D and pyPipe3D are fully tested with data of the most recent IFS data surveys and compilations (e.g. CALIFA, MaNGA, SAMI and AMUSING++), and confronted with simulations. We present in here the exploration of the physical properties of the sample of HII regions and aggregations of the last HII regions catalog of the CALIFA survey. This sample comprises the optical spectroscopic properties of more than ~26,000 ionized regions corresponding to 924 galaxies from the Integral Field Spectroscopy data, including the flux intensity and equivalent widths and the properties of their underlying stellar population. In the current study we derive a set of physical quantities for all these regions based on those properties, including (i) the fraction of young stars; (ii) the ionization strength (using six different estimations); (iii) the oxygen abundance (using 25 different calibrators); (iv) the nitrogen and nitrogen-to-oxygen abundance; (v) the dust extinction and (vi) the electron density. Using this dataset we explore how the loci in the classical diagnostic diagrams are connected with those quantities, the radial distributions of these parameters, and the inter-relations between themselves and with the properties of the underlying stellar populations. We conclude that many properties of the HII regions are tightly related to the galactic stellar evolution at the location where those regions are observed. Those properties are modulated only as a second-order effect by the properties of the ionizing stars and the ionized nebulae that do not depend on the astrophysical context in which they are formed. We apply stellar population synthesis analysis to obtain spatially-resolved archaeological inferences for a large sample of "red and dead" Elliptical galaxies (Classical Ellipticals; CLEs) from the MaNGA/SDSS-IV DR15 survey. From their 2D stellar light and mass maps, we explore the differences between the radial mass and light distributions in the rest-frame bands $g,$ $r,$ and $i$ as functions of look-back time, $t_{\rm lb}$, or redshift, $z$. We characterize these differences through the ratios between the following mass- and light-derived global properties: sizes, concentrations, and effective surface densities. We find that the mass-to-light ratios of these properties change with $t_{\rm lb}$, more the more massive the galaxies are. The CLE galaxy archaeological progenitors are, on average, less compact, concentrated, and dense in light than in mass as $z$ decreases. However, at later times, when also the evolution of the progenitors becomes passive at all radii, there is an upturn in these trends and the differences between mass and light in compactness/concentration decrease towards $z\sim 0$. The trends in the ratios of mass to light sizes agree qualitatively with results from direct observations in galaxy surveys at different redshifts. We discuss the caveats and interpretations of our results, and speculate that the strong structural evolution found in some previous studies for early-type galaxies could be explained partially by photometric changes rather than by intrinsic structural changes., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 19 pages, 11 figures

One way the AGN are expected to influence the evolution of their host galaxies is by removing metal content via outflows. In this article we present results that show that AGN can have an effect on the chemical enrichment of their host galaxies using the fossil record technique on CALIFA galaxies. We classified the chemical enrichment histories of all galaxies in our sample regarding whether they show a drop in the value of their metallicity. We find that galaxies currently hosting an AGN are more likely to show this drop in their metal content compared to the quiescent sample. Once we separate the sample by their star-forming status we find that star-forming galaxies are less likely to have a drop in metallicity but have deeper decreases when these appear. This behavior could be evidence for the influence of either pristine gas inflows or galactic outflows triggered by starbursts, both of which can produce a drop in metallicity., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We measure the star formation rate (SFR) per unit gas mass and the star formation efficiency (SFE$_{\rm gas}$ for total gas, SFE$_{\rm mol}$ for the molecular gas) in 81 nearby galaxies selected from the EDGE-CALIFA survey, using $^{12}$CO(J=1-0) and optical IFU data. For this analysis we stack CO spectra coherently by using the velocities of H$\alpha$ detections to detect fainter CO emission out to galactocentric radii $r_{\rm gal} \sim 1.2 r_{25}$ ($\sim 3 R_{\rm e}$), and include the effects of metallicity and high surface densities in the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion. We determine the scale lengths for the molecular and stellar components, finding a close to 1:1 relation between them. This result indicates that CO emission and star formation activity are closely related. We examine the radial dependence of SFE$_{\rm gas}$ on physical parameters such as galactocentric radius, stellar surface density $\Sigma_{\star}$, dynamical equilibrium pressure $P_{\rm DE}$, orbital timescale $\tau_{\rm orb}$, and the Toomre $Q$ stability parameter (including star and gas $Q_{\rm star+gas}$). We observe a generally smooth, continuous exponential decline in the SFE$_{\rm gas}$ with $r_{\rm gal}$. The SFE$_{\rm gas}$ dependence on most of the physical quantities appears to be well described by a power-law. Our results also show a flattening in the SFE$_{\rm gas}$-$\tau_{\rm orb}$ relation at $\log[\tau_{\rm orb}]\sim 7.9-8.1$ and a morphological dependence of the SFE$_{\rm gas}$ per orbital time, which may reflect star formation quenching due to the presence of a bulge component. Differential enrichment between $\alpha$- and Fe-peak elements is known to be strongly connected with the shape of the star formation history (SFH), the star formation efficiency (SFE), the inflow and outflow of material, and even the shape of the Initial Mass Function (IMF). However, beyond the Local Group detailed explorations are mostly limited to early-type galaxies due to the lack of a good proxy for [$\alpha$/Fe] in late-type ones, limiting our understanding of the chemical enrichment process. We intent to extend the explorations of [$\alpha$/Fe] to late-type galaxies, in order to understand the details of the differential enrichment process. We compare the gas phase oxygen abundance with the luminosity weighted stellar metallicity in an extensive catalog of $\sim$25,000 H ii regions extracted from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey, an exploration using integral field spectroscopy of $\sim$900 galaxies, covering a wide range of masses and morphologies. This way we define [O/Fe] as the ratio between both parameters, proposing it as an indirect proxy of the [$\alpha$/Fe] ratio. Results. We illustrate how the [O/Fe] parameter describes the chemical enrichment process in spiral galaxies, finding that: (i) it follows the decreasing pattern with [Fe/H] reported for the [$\alpha$/Fe] ratio and (ii) its absolute scale depends of the stellar mass and the morphology. We reproduce both patterns using two different chemical evolution models (ChEM), considering that galaxies with different stellar mass and morphology present (i) different SFHs, SFEs and different inflow/outflow rates, or (ii) a different maximum stellar mass cut for the IMF. Helium is the second most common chemical species in the Universe. The study of helium abundance has the potential to unravel the chemical evolution of and within galaxies. In this study, we provide an empirical calibration for the singly ionized helium abundance: $12+\log_{10}({\rm He}^+/{\rm H}^+)$, based on the emission line flux ratio He$_{\lambda5876}$/H$\alpha$ from Galactic and extragalactic HII regions compiled from the literature. Based on this calibrator, we explore for the first time the helium abundance in a large sample of HII regions located in galaxies representative of the nearby Universe from the CALIFA survey. Furthermore, this calibrator allows us to explore the variations of the helium abundance with respect to the oxygen abundance. The observed trends are in agreement with a change in the chemical enrichment with mass/oxygen abundance similar to the one observed due to the inside-out model in a MW-galaxy (highlighting the connection between resolved and global trends in galaxies). Our calibrator provides an empirical proxy to estimate the helium abundance at kpc scales as well as to constrain chemical evolutionary models., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures. This series of papers aims at understanding the formation and evolution of non-barred disc galaxies. We use the new spectro-photometric decomposition code, C2D, to separate the spectral information of bulges and discs of a statistically representative sample of galaxies from the CALIFA survey. Then, we study their stellar population properties analising the structure-independent datacubes with the Pipe3D algorithm. We find a correlation between the bulge-to-total ($B/T$) luminosity (and mass) ratio and galaxy stellar mass. The $B/T$ mass ratio has only a mild evolution with redshift, but the bulge-to-disc ($B/D$) mass ratio shows a clear increase of the disc component since redshift $z < 1$ for massive galaxies. The mass-size relation for both bulges and discs describes an upturn at high galaxy stellar masses (log{(M_{\star}/M_{\sun})} > 10.5). The relation holds for bulges but not for discs when using their individual stellar masses. We find a negligible evolution of the mass-size relation for both the most massive (log{(M_{\star \rm ,b,d}/M_{\sun})} > 10) bulges and discs. For lower masses, discs show a larger variation than bulges. We also find a correlation between the S\'ersic index of bulges and both galaxy and bulge stellar mass, which does not hold for the disc mass. Our results support an inside-out formation of nearby non-barred galaxies, and they suggest that i) bulges formed early-on and ii) they have not evolved much through cosmic time. However, we find that the early properties of bulges drive the future evolution of the galaxy as a whole, and particularly the properties of the discs that eventually form around them., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures. We present a new characterization of the relations between star-formation rate, stellar mass and molecular gas mass surface densities at different spatial scales across galaxies (from galaxy wide to kpc-scales). To do so we make use of the largest sample combining spatially-resolved spectroscopic information with CO observations, provided by the EDGE-CALIFA survey, together with new single dish CO observations obtained by APEX. We show that those relations are the same at the different explored scales, sharing the same distributions for the explored data, with similar slope, intercept and scatter (when characterized by a simple power-law). From this analysis, we propose that these relations are the projection of a single relation between the three properties that follows a distribution well described by a line in the three-dimension parameter space. Finally, we show that observed secondary relations between the residuals and the considered parameters are fully explained by the correlation between the uncertainties, and therefore have no physical origin. The mechanisms that bring galaxies to strongly reduce their star formation activity (star-formation quenching) is still poorly understood. To better study galaxy evolution, we propose a classification based on the maps of the ionised hydrogen distribution, traced by kpc-resolved, equivalent width of H$\alpha$ maps, and the nuclear activity of the galaxies using information from the BPT diagnostic diagrams. Using these tools, we group a sample of 238 galaxies from the CALIFA survey in six quenching stages (QS): objects dominated by recent star formation; systems that present a quiescent-nuclear-ring structure in their centre; galaxies that are centrally-quiescent; galaxies with no clear pattern in their ionisation gas distribution - mixed; systems that posses only a few star-forming regions - nearly-retired, or galaxies that are completely quiescent - fully-retired. Regarding their nuclear activity, we further divide the galaxies into two groups - active systems that host a weak or strong AGN in their centre, and non-active objects. Galaxies grouped into quenching stage classes occupy specific locations on the star-formation-rate versus stellar mass diagram. The "Blue cloud" is populated by the star-forming and the quiescent-nuclear-ring galaxies, the "Green valley" is populated by centrally-quiescent and mixed systems, "Red sequence" by the nearly- and fully-retired objects. Generally, galaxies that host a weak or strong AGN show properties, comparable to the non-active counterparts at the same quenching stages, except for the AGN-hosting star-forming systems. The degree of the star-formation quenching increases along the present emission-line pattern sequence from star-forming to fully-retired. We present the relation between the star formation rate surface density, $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$, and the hydrostatic mid-plane pressure, P$_{\rm h}$, for 4260 star-forming regions of kpc size located in 96 galaxies included in the EDGE-CALIFA survey covering a wide range of stellar masses and morphologies. We find that these two parameters are tightly correlated, exhibiting smaller scatter and strong correlation in comparison to other star-forming scaling relations. A power-law, with a slightly sub-linear index, is a good representation of this relation. Locally, the residuals of this correlation show a significant anti-correlation with both the stellar age and metallicity whereas the total stellar mass may also play a secondary role in shaping the $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ - P$_{\rm h}$ relation. For our sample of active star-forming regions (i.e., regions with large values of H$\alpha$ equivalent width), we find that the effective feedback momentum per unit stellar mass ($p_\ast/m_\ast$),measured from the P$_{\rm h}$ / $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ ratio increases with P$_{\rm h}$. The median value of this ratio for all the sampled regions is larger than the expected momentum just from supernovae explosions. Morphology of the galaxies, including bars, does not seem to have a significant impact in the $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ - P$_{\rm h}$ relation. Our analysis suggests that self regulation of the $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ at kpc scales comes mainly from momentum injection to the interstellar medium from supernovae explosions. However, other mechanism in disk galaxies may also play a significant role in shaping the $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ at local scales. Star formation rate density, $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$, has shown a remarkable correlation with both components of the baryonic mass at kpc scales (i.e., the stellar mass density, and the molecular gas mass density; $\Sigma_{\ast}$, and $\Sigma_{\rm mol}$, respectively) for galaxies in the nearby Universe. In this study we propose an empirical relation between $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ and the baryonic mass surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm b}$ =$\Sigma_{\rm mol,Av}$ + $\Sigma_{\ast}$; where $\Sigma_{\rm mol,Av}$ is the molecular gas density derived from the optical extinction, Av) at kpc scales using the spatially-resolved properties of the MaNGA survey - the largest sample of galaxies observed via Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS, $\sim$ 8400 objects). We find that $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ tightly correlates with $\Sigma_{\rm b}$. Furthermore, we derive an empirical relation between the $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ and a second degree polynomial of $\Sigma_{\rm b}$ yielding a one-to-one relation between these two observables. Both, $\Sigma_{\rm b}$ and its polynomial form show a stronger correlation and smaller scatter with respect to $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ than the relations derived using the individual components of $\Sigma_{\rm b}$. Our results suggest that indeed these three parameters are physically correlated, suggesting a scenario in which the two components of the baryonic mass regulate the star-formation activity at kpc scales., Comment: 10 pages, 6 Figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

NGC 7469 is a well known Luminous IR Galaxy, with a circumnuclear star formation ring ($\sim 830$ pc radius) surrounding a Seyfert 1 AGN. Nuclear unresolved winds were previously detected in X-rays and UV, as well as an extended biconical outflow in IR coronal lines. We search for extended outflows by measuring the kinematics of the $\mathrm{H\beta}$ and [O III] $\lambda 5007$ optical emission lines, in data of the VLT/MUSE integral field spectrograph. We find evidence of two outflow kinematic regimes: one slower regime extending across most of the star formation ring -- possibly driven by the massive star formation -- and a faster regime (with a maximum velocity of $-715 \ \mathrm{km \ s^{-1}}$), only observed in [O III], in the western region between the AGN and the massive star forming regions of the ring, likely AGN-driven. This work shows a case where combined AGN/star-formation feedback can be effectively spatially-resolved, opening up a promising path toward a deeper understanding of feedback processes in the central kiloparsec of AGN., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. We use fossil record techniques on the CALIFA sample to study how galaxies in the local universe have evolved in terms of their chemical content. We show how the metallicity and the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) evolve through time for the galaxies in our sample and how this evolution varies when we divide them based on their mass, morphology and star-forming status. We also check the impact of measuring the metallicity at the centre or the outskirts. We find the expected results that the most massive galaxies got enriched faster, with the MZR getting steeper at higher redshifts. However, once we separate the galaxies into morphology bins this behaviour is not as clear, which suggests that morphology is a primary factor to determine how fast a galaxy gets enriched, with mass determining the amount of enrichment. We also find that star-forming galaxies appear to be converging in their chemical evolution, that is, the metallicity of star-forming galaxies of different mass is very similar at recent times compared to several Gyr ago., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures

We present multi-band photometry and spectroscopy of SN 2018cuf, a Type IIP ("P" for plateau) supernova (SN) discovered by the Distance Less Than 40 Mpc survey (DLT40) within 24 hours of explosion. SN 2018cuf appears to be a typical Type IIP SN, with an absolute $V$-band magnitude of $-$16.73 $\pm$ 0.32 at maximum and a decline rate of 0.21 $\pm$ 0.05 mag/50d during the plateau phase. The distance of the object is constrained to be 41.8 $\pm$ 5.7 Mpc by using the expanding photosphere method. We use spectroscopic and photometric observations from the first year after the explosion to constrain the progenitor of SN 2018cuf using both hydrodynamic light curve modelling and late-time spectroscopic modelling. The progenitor of SN 2018cuf was most likely a red supergiant of about 14.5 $\rm M_{\odot}$ that produced 0.04 $\pm$ 0.01 $\rm M_{\odot}$ $\rm ^{56}Ni$ during the explosion. We also found $\sim$ 0.07 $\rm M_{\odot}$ of circumstellar material (CSM) around the progenitor is needed to fit the early light curves, where the CSM may originate from pre-supernova outbursts. During the plateau phase, high velocity features at $\rm \sim 11000\ km~s^{-1}$ are detected both in the optical and near-infrared spectra, supporting the possibility that the ejecta were interacting with some CSM. A very shallow slope during the post-plateau phase is also observed and it is likely due to a low degree of nickel mixing or the relatively high nickel mass in the SN., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures, submitted to ApJ

We present a novel method to retrieve the chemical structure of galaxies using integral field spectroscopy data through the stellar Metallicity Distribution Function (MDF). This is the probability distribution of observing stellar populations having a metallicity $Z$. We apply this method to a set of $550$ galaxies from the CALIFA survey. We present the behaviour of the MDF as a function of the morphology, the stellar mass and the radial distance. We use the stellar metallicity radial profiles retrieved as the first moment of the MDF, as an internal test for our method. The gradients in these radial profiles are consistent with the known trends: they are negative in massive early-type galaxies and tend to positive values in less massive late-type ones. We find that these radial profiles may not convey the complex chemical structure of some galaxy types. Overall, low mass galaxies ($\log{M_\star/\mathrm{M}_{\odot}}\leq10$) have broad MDFs ($\sigma_Z\sim1.0\,$dex), with unclear dependence on their morphology. However this result is likely affected by under-represented bins in our sample. On the other hand, massive galaxies ($\log{M_\star/\mathrm{M}_{\odot}}\geq11$) have systematically narrower MDFs ($\sigma_Z\leq0.2\,$dex). We find a clear trend whereby the MDFs at $r_k/R_e>1.5$ have large variance. This result is consistent with sparse SFHs in medium/low stellar density regions. We further find there are multi-modal MDFs in the outskirts ($\sim18\,$per cent) and the central regions ($\sim40\,$per cent) of galaxies. This behaviour is linked to a fast chemical enrichment during early stages of the SFH, along with the posterior formation of a metal-poor stellar population., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures

Understanding how galaxies cease to form stars represents an outstanding challenge for galaxy evolution theories. This process of "star formation quenching" has been related to various causes, including Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) activity, the influence of large-scale dynamics, and the environment in which galaxies live. In this paper, we present the first results from a follow-up of CALIFA survey galaxies with observations of molecular gas obtained with the APEX telescope. Together with EDGE survey CARMA observations, we collect $^{12}$CO observations that cover approximately one effective radius in 472 CALIFA galaxies. We observe that the deficit of galaxy star formation with respect to the star formation main sequence (SFMS) increases with the absence of molecular gas and with a reduced efficiency of conversion of molecular gas into stars, in line with results of other integrated studies. However, by dividing the sample into galaxies dominated by star formation and galaxies quenched in their centres (as indicated by the average value of the H$\alpha$ equivalent width), we find that this deficit increases sharply once a certain level of gas consumption is reached, indicating that different mechanisms drive separation from the SFMS in star-forming and quenched galaxies. Our results indicate that differences in the amount of molecular gas at a fixed stellar mass are the primary driver for the dispersion in the SFMS, and the most likely explanation for the start of star-formation quenching. However, once a galaxy is quenched, changes in star formation efficiency drive how much a retired galaxy separates in star formation rate from star-forming ones of similar masses. In other words, once a paucity of molecular gas has significantly reduced star formation, changes in the star formation efficiency are what drives a galaxy deeper into the red cloud, retiring it., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

We explore the effects of tidal interactions on star formation (SF) by analysing a sample of CALIFA survey galaxies. The sample consists of tidally and non-tidally perturbed galaxies, paired at the closest stellar mass densities for the same galaxy type between subsamples. They are then compared, both on the resolved Star Formation Main Sequence (SFMS) plane and in annular property profiles. Star-forming regions in tidally perturbed galaxies exhibit flatter SFMS slopes compared to star-forming regions in non-tidally perturbed galaxies. Despite that the annular profiles show star-forming regions in tidally perturbed galaxies as being mostly older, their SF properties are never reduced against those ones proper of non-tidally perturbed galaxies. Star-forming regions in non-tidally perturbed galaxies are better candidates for SF suppression (quenching). The lowered SF with increasing stellar mass density in tidally perturbed galaxies may suggest a lower dependence of SF on stellar mass. Though the SFMS slopes, either flatter or steeper, are found independent of stellar mass density, the effect of global stellar mass can not be ignored when distinguishing among galaxy types. Since a phenomenon or property other than local/global stellar mass may be taking part in the modulation of SF, the integrated SF properties are related to the tidal perturbation parameter. We find weak, but detectable, positive correlations for perturbed galaxies suggesting that tidal perturbations induced by close companions increase the gas accretion rates of these objects.

Our understanding of the structure, composition and evolution of galaxies has strongly improved in the last decades, mostly due to new results based on large spectroscopic and imaging surveys. In particular, the nature of ionized gas, its ionization mechanisms, its relation with the stellar properties and chemical composition, the existence of scaling relations that describe the cycle between stars and gas, and the corresponding evolution patterns have been widely explored and described. More recently, the introduction of additional techniques, in particular Integral Field Spectroscopy, and their use in large galaxy surveys, have forced us to re-interpret most of those recent results from a spatially resolved perspective. This review is aimed to complement recent efforts to compile and summarize this change of paradigm in the interpretation of galaxy evolution. In particular we cover three particular aspects not fully covered in detail in recent reviews: (i) the spatially resolved nature of the ionization properties in galaxies and the confusion introduced by considering just integrated quantities; (ii) the nature of the global scaling relations and their relations with the spatially resolved ones; and (iii) the dependence of the radial gradients and characteristic properties of the stellar populations and ionized gas on stellar mass and galaxy morphology. To this end we replicate published results, and present novel ones, based on the largest compilation of IFS data of galaxies in the nearby universe to date., Comment: 42 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in RMxAA

We present a comparison of the spin parameter $\lambda_R$, measured in a region dominated by the galaxy disc, between 20 pairs of nearby (0.005$<$z$<$0.03) seemingly isolated twin galaxies differing in nuclear activity. We find that 80--82% of the active galaxies show higher values of $\lambda_R$ than their corresponding non-active twin(s), indicating larger rotational support in the AGN discs. This result is driven by the 11 pairs of unbarred galaxies, for which 100% of the AGN show larger $\lambda_R$ than their twins. These results can be explained by a more efficient angular momentum transfer from the inflowing gas to the disc baryonic matter in the case of the active galaxies. This gas inflow could have been induced by disc or bar instabilities, although we cannot rule out minor mergers if these are prevalent in our active galaxies. This result represents the first evidence of galaxy-scale differences between the dynamics of active and non-active isolated spiral galaxies of intermediate stellar masses (10$^{10}

We use the stellar kinematics for $2458$ galaxies from the MaNGA survey to explore dynamical scaling relations between the stellar mass $M_{\star}$ and the total velocity parameter at the effective radius, $R_e$, defined as $S_{K}^{2}=KV_{R_e}^{2}+\sigma_{\star_e}^{2}$, which combines rotation velocity $V_{R_e}$, and velocity dispersion $\sigma_{\star_e}$. We confirm that spheroidal and spiral galaxies follow the same $M_{\star}-S_{0.5}$ scaling relation with lower scatter than the $M_{\star}-V_{R_e}$ and $M_{\star}-\sigma_{\star_e}$ ones. We also explore a more general Universal Fundamental Plane described by the equation $log(\Upsilon_{e}) = log (S_{0.5}^{2}) - log (I_{e}) - log (R_{e}) + C$, which in addition to kinematics, $S_{0.5}$, and effective radius, $R_e$, it includes surface brightness, $I_e$, and dynamical mass-to-light ratio, $\Upsilon_e$. We use sophisticated Schwarzschild dynamical models for a sub-sample of 300 galaxies from the CALIFA survey to calibrate the so called Universal Fundamental Plane. That calibration allows us to propose both: (i) a parametrization to estimate the difficult-to-measure dynamical mass-to-light ratio at the effective radius; and (ii) a new dynamical mass proxy consistent with dynamical models within $0.09\ dex$. We reproduce the relation between the dynamical mass and the stellar mass in the inner regions of galaxies. We use the estimated dynamical mass-to-light ratio from our analysis, $\Upsilon_{e}^{fit}$, to explore the Universal Fundamental Plane with the MaNGA data set. We find that all classes of galaxies, from spheroids to disks, follow this Universal Fundamental Plane with a scatter significantly smaller $(0.05\ dex)$ than the one reported for the $M_{\star}-S_{0.5}$ relation $(0.1\ dex)$, the Fundamental Plane $(\sim 0.09\ dex)$ and comparable with Tully-Fisher studies $(\sim 0.05\ dex)$, but for a wider range of galaxy types., Comment: Submitted to ApJ. 21 pages, 12 figures

AT 2018cow was the nearest and best studied example of a new breed of extra-galactic, luminous and rapidly-evolving transient. Both the progenitor systems and explosion mechanisms of these rapid transients remain a mystery - the energetics, spectral signatures, and timescales make them challenging to interpret in established classes of supernovae and tidal disruption events. The rich, multi-wavelength data-set of AT 2018cow has still left several interpretations viable to explain the nature of this event. In this paper we analyse integral-field spectroscopic data of the host galaxy, CGCG 137-068, to compare environmental constraints with leading progenitor models. We find the explosion site of AT 2018cow to be very typical of core-collapse supernovae (known to form from stars with MZAMS ~8-25M), and infer a young stellar population age at the explosion site of few times 10Myr, at slightly sub-solar metallicity. When comparing to expectations for exotic intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) tidal disruption events,we find no evidence for a potential host system of the IMBH. In particular, there are no abrupt changes in metallicity or kinematics in the vicinity of the explosion site, arguing against the presence of a distinct host system. The proximity of AT 2018cow to strong star-formation in the host galaxy makes us favour a massive stellar progenitor for this event., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS, 10 pages

We present a new catalog of HII regions based on the integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data of the extended CALIFA and PISCO samples. The selection of HII regions was based on two assumptions: a clumpy structure with high contrast of H$\alpha$ emission and an underlying stellar population comprising young stars. The catalog provides the spectroscopic information of 26,408 individual regions corresponding to 924 galaxies, including the flux intensities and equivalent widths of 51 emission lines covering the wavelength range between 3745-7200A. To our knowledge, this is the largest catalog of spectroscopic properties of HII regions. We explore a new approach to decontaminate the emission lines from diffuse ionized gas contribution. This diffuse gas correction was estimated to correct every emission line within the considered spectral range. With the catalog of HII regions corrected, new demarcation lines are proposed for the classical diagnostic diagrams. Finally, we study the properties of the underlying stellar populations of the HII regions. It was found that there is a direct relationship between the ionization conditions on the nebulae and the properties of stellar populations besides the physicals condition on the ionized regions., Comment: 26 pages, 14 figures

We study the spatially resolved properties of 343 elliptical galaxies with the MaNGA/SDSS-IV survey. We used the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys for morphological classification. Based on integrated spectroscopic properties and colors, we classified seven classes of ellipticals. We inferred the stellar age and metallicity ($Z$) gradients out to a 1.5 effective radius of classical "red and dead", recently quenched, and blue star-forming ellipticals (CLEs, RQEs, and BSFs), corresponding to 73%, 10%, and 4% of the sample, respectively. We reconstructed their global and radial histories of star formation and mass growth. We find the mass- and luminosity-weighted age gradients of CLEs are nearly flat or mildly negative. The respective $Z$ gradients are negative, being flatter as the mass is smaller. The more massive CLEs formed stars earlier and quenched faster than the less massive ones. The CLEs show a weak inside-out growth and a clear inside-out quenching. They finished their quenching globally 3.8 $\pm$ 1.2 Gyr ago, with quenching time-scales of 3.4 $\pm$ 0.8 Gyr. At masses < 10$^{11}$ $M_{\bigodot}$, the age and $Z$ gradients of the RQEs and BSFs are flatter than those of the CLEs but with larger scatters. They show very weak inside-out growth and quenching, which is slow and even not completed at $z\sim0$ for the BSFs. Instead, the massive RQEs show an outside-in quenching and positive gradients in the luminosity-weighted age and stellar metallicities. The RQEs of all masses quenched 1.2 $\pm$ 0.9 Gyr ago on average. Our results for the CLEs are consistent with a two-phase scenario where their inner parts formed by an early and coeval dissipative collapse with a consequent burst of star formation and further quenching, whereas the outer parts continued their assembly likely by dry mergers. Estimating the bar pattern speed (\Om{}) is one of the main challenges faced in understanding the role of stellar bars in galaxy dynamical evolution. This work aims to characterise different uncertainty sources affecting the Tremaine Weinberg (TW)-method to study the correlation between bar and galaxies physical parameters. We use a sample of 15 MaNGA SDSS-IV galaxies and 3 CALIFA galaxies from \cite{Aguerri2015}. We studied the errors related with (i) galaxy centre determination, (ii) disc position angle (PA) emphasising the difficulties triggered by outer non-axisymmetric structures besides the bar, (iii) the slits length and (iv) the spatial resolution. In average, the PA uncertainties range $\sim 15 \%$, the slit length $\sim 9 \%$ and the centring error $\sim 5 \%$. Reducing the spatial resolution increases the sensitivity to the PA error. Through Monte Carlo simulations, we estimate the probability distribution of the \R{} bar speed parameter. The present sample is composed of 7 slow, 4 fast and 7 ultrafast bars, with no trend with morphological types. Although uncertainties and low sample numbers may mask potential correlations between physical properties, we present a discussion of them: We observe an anti-correlation of \Om{} with the bar length and the stellar mass, suggesting that massive galaxies tend to host longer and slower bars. We also observe a correlation of the molecular gas fraction with \R{}, and a weak anti-correlation with \Om{}, suggesting that bars rotate slower in gaseous discs. [Abridged] We present the apparent stellar angular momentum of 300 galaxies across the Hubble sequence, using integral-field spectroscopic data from the CALIFA survey. Adopting the same $\lambda_\mathrm{R}$ parameter previously used to distinguish between slow and fast rotating early-type (elliptical and lenticular) galaxies, we show that spiral galaxies as expected are almost all fast rotators. Given the extent of our data, we provide relations for $\lambda_\mathrm{R}$ measured in different apertures, including conversions to long-slit 1D apertures. Our sample displays a wide range of $\lambda_\mathrm{Re}$ values, consistent with previous IFS studies. The fastest rotators are dominated by relatively massive and highly star-forming Sb galaxies, which preferentially reside in the main star-forming sequence. These galaxies reach $\lambda_\mathrm{Re}$ values of $\sim$0.85, are the largest galaxies at a given mass, and display some of the strongest stellar population gradients. Compared to the population of S0 galaxies, our findings suggest that fading may not be the dominant mechanism transforming spirals into lenticulars. Interestingly, we find that $\lambda_\mathrm{Re}$ decreases for late-type Sc and Sd spiral galaxies, with values than in occasions puts them in the slow-rotator regime. While for some of them this can be explained by their irregular morphologies and/or face-on configurations, others are edge-on systems with no signs of significant dust obscuration. The latter are typically at the low-mass end, but this does not explain their location in the classical ($V/\sigma$,$\varepsilon$) and ($\lambda_\mathrm{Re}$,$\varepsilon$) diagrams. We study the global star-formation rate (SFR) vs. stellar mass (M$_*$) correlation, and the spatially-resolved SFR surface density ($\Sigma_{SFR}$) vs. stellar mass surface density (\Sm) correlation, in a sample of $\sim2,000$ galaxies from the MaNGA MPL-5 survey. We classify galaxies and spatially-resolved areas into star-forming and retired according to their ionization processes. We confirm the existence of a Star-Forming Main Sequence (SFMS) for galaxies and spatially-resolved areas, and show that they have the same nature, with the global as a consequence of the local one. The latter presents a bend below a limit \Sm value, $\approx 3\times 10^7$ M$_\odot$kpc$^{-2}$, which is not physical. Using only star-forming areas (SFAs) above this limit, a slope and a scatter of $\approx1$ and $\approx0.27$ dex are determined. The retired galaxies/areas strongly segregate from their respective SFMS's, by $\sim -1.5$ dex on average. We explore how the global/local SFMS's depend on galaxy morphology, finding that for star-forming galaxies and SFAs, there is a trend to lower values of star-formation activity with earlier morphological types, which is more pronounced for the local SFMS. The morphology not only affects the global SFR due to the diminish of SFAs with earlier types, but also affects the local SF process. Our results suggest that the local SF at all radii is established by some universal mechanism partially modulated by morphology. Morphology seems to be connected to the slow aging and sharp decline of the SF process, and on its own it may depend on other properties as the environment., Comment: 24 pages, 16 figues. The star formation main sequence (SFMS) is a tight relation between the galaxy star formation rate (SFR) and its total stellar mass ($M_\star$). Early-type galaxies (ETGs) are often considered as low-SFR outliers of this relation. We study, for the first time, the separated distribution in the SFR vs. $M_\star$ of bulges and discs of 49 ETGs from the CALIFA survey. This is achieved using C2D, a new code to perform spectro-photometric decompositions of integral field spectroscopy datacubes. Our results reflect that: i) star formation always occurs in the disc component and not in bulges; ii) star-forming discs in our ETGs are compatible with the SFMS defined by star forming galaxies at $z \sim 0$; iii) the star formation is not confined to the outskirts of discs, but it is present at all radii (even where the bulge dominates the light); iv) for a given mass, bulges exhibit lower sSFR than discs at all radii; and v) we do not find a deficit of molecular gas in bulges with respect to discs for a given mass in our ETGs. We study how the use of several stellar subtraction methods and line fitting approaches can affect the derivation of the main kinematic parameters (velocity and velocity dispersion fields) of the ionized gas component. The target of this work is the nearby galaxy NGC 2906, observed with the MUSE instrument at Very Large Telescope. A sample of twelve spectra is selected from the inner (nucleus) and outer (spiral arms) regions, characterized by different ionization mechanisms. We compare three different methods to subtract the stellar continuum (FIT3D, STARLIGHT and pPXF), combined with one of the following stellar libraries: MILES, STELIB and GRANADA+MILES. The choice of the stellar subtraction method is the most important ingredient affecting the derivation of the gas kinematics, followed by the choice of the stellar library and by the line fitting approach. In our data, typical uncertainties in the observed wavelength and width of the H\alpha and [NII] lines are of the order of <\delta\lambda>_rms \sim 0.1\AA\ and <\delta\sigma>_rms \sim 0.2\AA\ (\sim 5 and 10km/s, respectively). The results obtained from the [NII] line seem to be slightly more robust, as it is less affected by stellar absorption than H\alpha. All methods considered yield statistically consistent measurements once a mean systemic contribution \Delta\bar\lambda=\Delta\bar\sigma=0.2xDelta_{MUSE} is added in quadrature to the line fitting errors, where \Delta_{MUSE} = 1.1\AA\ \sim 50 km/s denotes the instrumental resolution of the MUSE spectra. Although the subtraction of the stellar continuum is critical in order to recover line fluxes, any method (including none) can be used in order to measure the gas kinematics, as long as an additional component of 0.2 x Delta_MUSE is added to the error budget., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures

We present a pilot study aimed to identify large-scale galaxy properties that could play a role in activating a quiescent nucleus. To do so, we compare the properties of two isolated nearby active galaxies and their non-active twins selected from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey. This pilot sample includes two barred and two unbarred galaxies. We characterise the stellar and ionised gas kinematics and also their stellar content. We obtain simple kinematic models by fitting the full stellar and ionised gas velocity fields and just the approaching/receding sides. We find that the analysed active galaxies present lopsided disks and higher values of the global stellar angular momentum ($\lambda_{R}$) than their non-active twins. This could be indicating that the stellar disks of the AGN gained angular momentum from the inflowing gas that triggered the nuclear activity. The inflow of gas could have been produced by a twisted disk instability in the case of the unbarred AGN, and by the bar in the case of the barred AGN. In addition, we find that the central regions of the studied active galaxies show older stellar populations than their non-active twins. Galaxies are complex systems made up of different structural components such as bulges, discs, and bars. Understanding galaxy evolution requires unveiling, independently, their history of stellar mass and metallicity assembly. We introduce C2D, a new algorithm to perform spectro-photometric multi-component decompositions of integral field spectroscopy (IFS) datacubes. The galaxy surface-brightness distribution at each wavelength (quasi-monochromatic image) is fitted using GASP2D, a 2D photometric decomposition code. As a result, C2D provides both a characteristic one-dimensional spectra and a full datacube with all the spatial and spectral information for every component included in the fit. We show the basic steps of the C2D spectro-photometric fitting procedure, tests on mock datacubes demonstrating its reliability, and a first application of C2D to a sample of three early-type galaxies (ETGs) observed within the CALIFA survey. The resulting datacubes from C2D are processed through the PIPE3D pipeline obtaining both the stellar populations and ionised gas properties of bulges and discs. We present a detailed exploration of the stellar mass vs. gas-phase metallicity relation (MZR) using integral field spectroscopy data obtained from ~1000 galaxies observed by the SAMI Galaxy survey. These spatially resolved spectroscopic data allow us to determine the metallicity within the same physical scale (Reff) for different calibrators. The shape of the MZ relations is very similar between the different calibrators, while there are large offsets in the absolute values of the abundances. We confirm our previous results derived using the spatially resolved data provided by the CALIFA and MaNGA surveys: (1) we do not find any significant secondary relation of the MZR with either the star formation rate (SFR) nor the specific SFR (SFR/Mass) for any of the calibrators used in this study, based on the analysis of the {individual} residuals, (2) if there is a dependence with the SFR, it is weaker than the reported one ($r_c\sim -$0.3), it is confined to the low mass regime (M*<10$^9$Msun) or high SFR regimes, and it does not produce any significant improvement in the {description of the average population of galaxies. The aparent disagreement with published results based on single fiber spectroscopic data could be due to (i) the interpretation of the secondary relation itself, (ii) the lower number of objects sampled at the low mass regime by the current study, or (iii) the presence of extreme star-forming galaxies that drive the secondary relation in previous results, Comment: 30 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publishing in MNRAS
