Introduction: Heart rate variability (HRV), brain resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC), and gut microbiota (GM) are three recognized indicators of health status, whose relationship has not been characterized. We aimed to identify the GM genera and families related to HRV and rsFC, the interaction effect of HRV and rsFC on GM taxa abundance, and the mediation effect of diet on these relationships., Methods: Eighty-eight healthy, young Colombian men were included in this cross-sectional study. HRV metrics were extracted from 24-hour Holter monitoring data and the resting functional connectivity strength (FCS) of 15 networks were derived from functional magnetic resonance imaging. Gut microbiota composition was assessed using the sequences of the V3-V4 regions of the 16 S rRNA gene, and diet was evaluated using a food frequency questionnaire. Multivariate linear regression analyses were performed to evaluate the correlations between the independent variables (HRV metrics and FCS) and the dependent variables (GM taxa abundance or alpha diversity indexes). Mediation analyses were used to test the role of diet in the relationship between HRV and GM., Results: The sympathovagal quotient (SQ) and the FCS of control networks were positively correlated with the abundance of the gut Ruminococcaceae family and an unclassified Ruminococcaceae genus (Ruminococcaceae_unc). Additionally, the interaction between the FCS of the control network and SQ reduced the individual main effects on the Ruminococcaceae_unc abundance. Finally, reduced habitual fiber intake partially mediated the relationship between SQ and this genus., Conclusion: Two indicators of self-regulation, HRV and the rsFC of control networks, are related to the abundance of gut microbiota taxa in healthy men. Technology is one of the pillars of surgery in the 21st century and is a key factor in achieving better surgical results. The current surgical process involves not only surgical techniques, but also a very high degree of specialisation and the knowledge and use of techniques and devices from other fields. In Spain, there are no studies published at a national level in this regard. From the Minimally Invasive Surgery and Technological Innovation section of the Spanish Association of Surgeons we have designed a study whose main objective is to evaluate the degree of technological implantation in the specialty of General Surgery in Spain, as well as to analyze the devices available in the different centres of the country. We propose to make a detailed description of the applications of these devices and techniques by areas of interest, pointing out the pathologies and procedures in which this technology is used., (Copyright © 2021 AEC. The objective of this work is to perform image quality assessment (IQA) of eye fundus images in the context of digital fundoscopy with topological data analysis (TDA) and machine learning methods. Eye health remains inaccessible for a large amount of the global population. Digital tools that automize the eye exam could be used to address this issue. IQA is a fundamental step in digital fundoscopy for clinical applications; it is one of the first steps in the preprocessing stages of computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems using eye fundus images. Images from the EyePACS dataset were used, and quality labels from previous works in the literature were selected. Cubical complexes were used to represent the images; the grayscale version was, then, used to calculate a persistent homology on the simplex and represented with persistence diagrams. Then, 30 vectorized topological descriptors were calculated from each image and used as input to a classification algorithm. Six different algorithms were tested for this study (SVM, decision tree, k-NN, random forest, logistic regression (LoGit), MLP). LoGit was selected and used for the classification of all images, given the low computational cost it carries. Performance results on the validation subset showed a global accuracy of 0.932, precision of 0.912 for label "quality" and 0.952 for label "no quality", recall of 0.932 for label "quality" and 0.912 for label "no quality", AUC of 0.980, F1 score of 0.932, and a Matthews correlation coefficient of 0.864. This work offers evidence for the use of topological methods for the process of quality assessment of eye fundus images, where a relatively small vector of characteristics (30 in this case) can enclose enough information for an algorithm to yield classification results useful in the clinical settings of a digital fundoscopy pipeline for CAD.

Considering the high prevalence of cartilage-associated pathologies, low self-repair capacity and limitations of current repair techniques, tissue engineering (TE) strategies have emerged as a promising alternative in this field. Three-dimensional culture techniques have gained attention in recent years, showing their ability to provide the most biomimetic environment for the cells under culture conditions, enabling the cells to fabricate natural, 3D functional microtissues (MTs). In this sense, the aim of this study was to generate, characterize and compare scaffold-free human hyaline and elastic cartilage-derived MTs (HC-MTs and EC-MTs, respectively) under expansion (EM) and chondrogenic media (CM). MTs were generated by using agarose microchips and evaluated ex vivo for 28 days. The MTs generated were subjected to morphometric assessment and cell viability, metabolic activity and histological analyses. Results suggest that the use of CM improves the biomimicry of the MTs obtained in terms of morphology, viability and extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis with respect to the use of EM. Moreover, the overall results indicate a faster and more sensitive response of the EC-derived cells to the use of CM as compared to HC chondrocytes. Finally, future preclinical in vivo studies are still needed to determine the potential clinical usefulness of these novel advanced therapy products.

The encapsulation of cells into biopolymer matrices enables the preparation of engineered substitute tissues. Here we report the generation of novel 3D magnetic biomaterials by encapsulation of magnetic nanoparticles and human hyaline chondrocytes within fibrin-agarose hydrogels, with potential use as articular hyaline cartilage-like tissues. By rheological measurements we observed that, (i) the incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles resulted in increased values of the storage and loss moduli for the different times of cell culture; and (ii) the incorporation of human hyaline chondrocytes into nonmagnetic and magnetic fibrin-agarose biomaterials produced a control of their swelling capacity in comparison with acellular nonmagnetic and magnetic fibrin-agarose biomaterials. Interestingly, the in vitro viability and proliferation results showed that the inclusion of magnetic nanoparticles did not affect the cytocompatibility of the biomaterials. What is more, immunohistochemistry showed that the inclusion of magnetic nanoparticles did not negatively affect the expression of type II collagen of the human hyaline chondrocytes. Summarizing, our results suggest that the generation of engineered hyaline cartilage-like tissues by using magnetic fibrin-agarose hydrogels is feasible. The resulting artificial tissues combine a stronger and stable mechanical response, with promising in vitro cytocompatibility. Introduction: the main aim of this study was to develop and implement a risk map in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Service of the University Hospital «Virgen de las Nieves» of Granada to minimize the incidence of adverse effects (AE)., Materials and Methods: Longitudinal, prospective study carried out in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Service of the Hospital Universitario Virgen de las Nieves of Granada, from June 2017 to May 2018, through the methodology of «Analysis and Failure Mode Effect». Management of the different AE was addressed. The following phases were considered as it follows: identification of the problem, identification of AE for within the practice of the oral and maxillofacial surgery that represents a problem in the assistive safety, creation of an interdisciplinary working group, analysis of the current situation in patient safety and risk management using 2analysis tools, SWOT and PITELO, preparation of the patient care process, development of a catalog of AE and preparation of a risk map., Results: A total of 33 AE were identified. The risk map showed a higher incidence of AE in the Surgical Area (22) compared to the areas of Outpatient Clinic and Hospital Discharge (6). A total of 10 critical AE were identified., Conclusions: The elaboration of a risk map allowed to determine the process of the oral and maxillofacial surgical patient, and to elaborate a catalog of AE., (Publicado por Elsevier España, S.L.U.)
