Abstract

Polonium isotopes having two protons above the shell closure at $Z=82$ show a wide variety of low-lying high-spin isomeric states across the whole chain. The structure of neutron-deficient isotopes up to $^{210}$Po ($N=126$) is well established as they are easily produced through various methods. However, there is not much information available for the neutron-rich counterparts for which only selective techniques can be used for their production. We report on the first fast-timing measurements of yrast states up to the 8$^+$ level in $^{214,216,218}$Po isotopes produced in the $\beta^-$ decay of $^{214,216,218}$Bi at ISOLDE, CERN. In particular, our new half-life value of 607(14) ps for the 8$_1^+$ state in $^{214}$Po is nearly 20 times shorter than the one available in literature and comparable with the newly measured half-lives of 409(16) and 628(25) ps for the corresponding 8$_1^+$ states in $^{216,218}$Po, respectively. The measured $B(E2;8_1^+ \to 6_1^+)$ transition probability values follow an increasing trend relative to isotope mass, reaching a maximum for $^{216}$Po. The increase contradicts the previous claims of isomerism for the $8^+$ yrast states in neutron-rich $^{214}$Po and beyond. Together with the other measured yrast transitions, the $B(E2)$ values provide a crucial test of the different theoretical approaches describing the underlying configurations of the yrast band. The new experimental results are compared to shell-model calculations using the KHPE and H208 effective interactions and their pairing modified versions, showing an increase in configuration mixing when moving towards the heavier isotopes., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures (main manuscript), 2 pages (supplemental material)

Abstract

The experimental data collected during the S515 experiment performed by the R3B collaboration at GSI/FAIR represent a great opportunity to investigate nucleon knockout reactions of exotic nuclei in the region of Sn using complete kinematics measurements. These cross sections can be used in the future to investigate the quenching in the knockout of the minority species (neutrons or protons) in nuclei far from stability. Some of the arguments put forward are the underestimation of the knockout of deeply bound nucleons, final state interactions or the role of short-range correlations (SRC). Recently, several works based on inclusive measurements have shown that these SRCs could reduce the single nucleon knockout cross sections by around 50%, depending on the neutron excess (N/Z) of the initial projectile. The S515 data can help us to go further in this investigation because it allows to correlate the knockout cross sections of one, two or more nucleons with the number of protons and neutrons emitted from the target and which can be detected by the CALIFA and NeuLAND detectors, respectively, and perform complete kinematical studies on the nature of the event (SRC, evaporation, emission of clusters, final-state interactions...). Here the results obtained for the charge distribution of reaction residues are presented, which is one of the first steps of the still on-going analysis.

Abstract

A new experimental fission approach is presented in the context of the R3B (Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams) collaboration, at the GSI/FAIR facility, in which knockout reactions in inverse kinematics are used to induce fission of 238U that will allow to characterise the excitation energy of the fission process and all the fission products. The CALIFA (CALorimeter for In-Flight detection of γ-rays and high energy charged pArticles) calorimeter, a key part of the R3B set-up, is used to reconstruct the momenta of the two protons from the (p, 2p) reactions. Preliminary results show that kinematic variables and first estimates for nucleon-removal cross sections are well reconstructed and in good agreement with other experimental measurements.

Abstract

Nuclear fission is a complex dynamical process, whose description involves the coupling between intrinsic and collective degrees of freedom, as well as different quantum-mechanical phenomena. For this reason, to this day it still lacks a satisfactory and complete microscopic description. In addition to the importance of describing fission itself, studies of the r-process in astrophysics depend on fission observables to constrain the theoretical models that explain the isotopic abundances in the Universe. To improve on the existing data, fission reactions of heavy nuclei in inverse kinematics are produced in quasi-free (p,2p) scattering reactions, which induce fission through particle-hole excitations that can range from few to tens of MeV. In order to study the evolution of the fission yields with temperature, the excitation energy of the fissioning system must be reconstructed, which is possible by measuring the four-momenta of the two outgoing protons. Performing this kind of experiment requires a complex experimental setup, providing full isotopic identification of both fission fragments and an accurate measurement of the momenta of the two outgoing protons. This was realized recently at the GSI/FAIR facility and some of the results obtained for the charge distributions are presented in this work.

Abstract

Abstract

In the last decades, measurements of spallation, fragmentation and Coulex induced fission reactions in inverse kinematics have provided valuable data to accurately investigate the fission dynamics and nuclear structure at large deformations of a large variety of stable and non-stable heavy nuclei. To go a step further, we propose now to induce fission by the use of quasi-free (p,2p) scattering reactions in inverse kinematics, which allows us to reconstruct the excitation energy of the compound fissioning system by using the four-momenta of the two outgoing protons. Therefore, this new approach might permit to correlate the excitation energy with the charge and mass distributions of the fission fragments and with the fission probabilities, given for the first time direct access to the simultaneous measurement of the fission yield dependence on temperature and fission barrier heights of exotic heavy nuclei, respectively. Abstract

CALIFA is the high efficiency and energy resolution calorimeter for the R$^{3}$B experiment at FAIR, intended for detecting high energy charged particles and $\gamma$-rays in inverse kinematics direct reactions. It surrounds the reaction target in a segmented configuration of Barrel and Forward End-Cap pieces. The CALIFA Barrel consists of 1952 detection units made of CsI(Tl) long-shaped scintillator crystals, and it is being commissioned during the Phase0 experiments at FAIR. The first setup for the CALIFA Barrel commissioning is presented here. Results of detector performance with $\gamma$-rays are obtained, and show that the system fulfills the design requirements.

Abstract

CALIFA is the high efficiency and energy resolution calorimeter for the R3B experiment at FAIR, intended for detecting high energy light charged particles and gamma rays in scattering experiments, and is being commissioned during the Phase-0 experiments at FAIR, between 2018 and 2020. It surrounds the reaction target in a segmented configuration with 2432 detection units made of long CsI(Tl) finger-shaped scintillator crystals. CALIFA has a 10 year intended operational lifetime as the R3B calorimeter, necessitating measures to be taken to ensure enduring performance. In this paper we present a systematic study of two groups of 6 different detection units of the CALIFA detector after more than four years of operation. The energy resolution and light output yield are evaluated under different conditions. Tests cover the aging of the first detector units assembled and investigates recovery procedures for degraded detection units. A possible reason for the observed degradation is given, pointing to the crystal-APD coupling.

Abstract

We report on spectroscopic information and lifetime measurements of even-even neutron-rich Te isotopes. Excited states were populated in fast-neutron induced fission of 238U at the ALTO facility of IJCLab with the LICORNE neutron source and detected using the hybrid ν-ball spectrometer. We provide first results on lifetimes of the 6+1 state in 136Te and the (6+1), (4+1), and (2+1) states in 138Te and discuss the results in the context of large-scale shell-model calculations. The level schemes of 136Te and 138Te are revised in terms of lifetimes of their 2+1,4+1 states and updated information on the (4+2) state in 136Te is presented. In addition, previously reported data on spectroscopy and lifetimes in 134Te are reexamined. This work provides new insights into the evolution of collectivity for Te isotopes with N=82,84,86.

Abstract

International audience; A new $\beta$-decaying state in $^{214}$Bi has been identified at the ISOLDE Decay Station at the CERN-ISOLDE facility. A preferred $I^{\pi} = (8^-)$ assignment was suggested for this state based on the β-decay feeding pattern to levels in $^{214}$Po and shell-model calculations. The half-life of the $I^{\pi} = (8^-)$ state was deduced to be $T_{1/2} = 9.39(10)$ min. The deexcitation of the levels populated in $^{214}$Po by the $\beta$ decay of this state was investigated via $\gamma - \gamma$ coincidences and a number of new levels and transitions was identified. Shell-model calculations for excited states in $^{214}$Bi and $^{214}$Po were performed using two different effective interactions: the H208 and the modified Kuo-Herling particle interaction. Both calculations agree on the interpretation of the new β-decaying state as an $I^{\pi} = 8^-$ isomer and allow for tentative assignment of shell-model states to several high-spin states in $^{214}$Po.

Abstract

International audience; Prompt and delayed γ-ray spectroscopy of the neutron-rich 94Kr was performed, as part of the fission campaign at the ALTO facility of the IPN Orsay, using the fast-neutron-induced fission reaction 238U(n,f) in combination with the ν-Ball array, a novel hybrid γ spectrometer for energy and lifetime measurements. Several new yrast and nonyrast transitions were observed for the first time, extending the previously known level scheme. Additionally, we report on the observation of a new short-lived isomer at 3444 keV with a half-life of 32(3) ns. The analysis of the Nilsson orbitals obtained from Gogny cranked Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations suggests a (9−) spin and an oblate deformation for this isomer corresponding to a two-quasineutron state, indicating an isomeric structure very similar to that of the neighboring isotones 96Sr and 92Se

Abstract

Objective: The liver plays a key role in the inflammatory response during major surgery or infection. The influence of age on liver function and hepatic acute phase protein (APP) synthesis should be serially studied in elderly patients undergoing major abdominal surgery., Design and Setting: Prospective and descriptive study over 3 days. Clinical investigation in the operating room and surgical intensive care unit (ICU) of a tertiary care hospital., Patients and Interventions: 42 consecutive patients were grouped according to age: less than 60 years ("adult") or over 65 years ("elderly") and prospectively studied. All patients received standardized general anesthesia and were treated afterwards according to the standard protocols of our ICU. Intensivists caring for the patients were not involved in the study and were blinded to data analysis., Measurements and Results: Concentrations of interleukin (IL)-6, serum amyloid A (SAA), C-reactive protein (CRP), alpha1-antitrypsin (alpha1-AT), and haptoglobin were measured to assess the APP response. Liver function was evaluated by the monoethylglycinexylidide (MEGX) test and by measuring alpha-glutathione S-transferase (alpha-GST). All measurements were performed at induction of anesthesia (T0), at the end of surgery (T1), and 2 h (T2), 24 h (T3), and 48 h (T4) postoperatively. There was no difference in the incidence of postoperative septic complications between the two groups. Baseline values of IL-6 and the four APPs were normal in all patients and did not differ between the groups. IL-6 levels increased significantly in all patients at T1 and T2, with a significantly higher increase in the older patients (elderly: from 7.4+/-3.4 pg/ml to 220.6+/-49.5 pg/ml; adult: from 6.2+/-2.5 pg/ml to 189.9+/-36.8 pg/ml). A return to baseline values was seen at T3 in both groups. Concentrations of all APPs, except for haptoglobin, started to increase at T3. Peak concentrations were significantly lower in the elderly patients (elderly: SAA 358+/-133 microg/l, CRP 5.1+/-2.3 mg/dl, alpha1-AT 160+/-96 mg/dl; adult: SAA 444+/-100 microg/l, CRP 8.5+/-3.2 mg/dl, alpha1-AT 223+/-85 mg/dl). Baseline alpha-GST and MEGX concentrations were normal in all patients. Alpha-GST concentrations increased in both groups at T1 and T2, with a significantly higher increase in the older patients (elderly: 3.7+/-1.4 microg/l to 10.2+/-2.9 microg/l; adult 4.5+/-2.1 microg/l to 8.5+/-1.7 microg/l). A return to baseline values was seen at T3 in both groups. MEGX concentrations were significantly lower and abnormal (<50 ng/ml) in the older patients at T3 and T4., Conclusions: Our observations suggest that the postoperative hepatic acute phase response is reduced in elderly patients undergoing major abdominal surgery. The decreased release of liver-synthesized APPs was associated with an impaired hepatocyte function and a disturbance of hepatocellular integrity. Further work needs to be done to determine whether these findings might have an impact on the incidence of postoperative septic complications or prognostic significance for survival in aged patients.
