Pheasants are declining everywhere in the world and therefore updated information about their population and habitats are important for conservation and management. The present study was conducted in the Palas Valley, District Kohistan, Pakistan in late spring (May and June) 2020 and early spring (March and April) 2021 to assess the population and anthropogenic stress. The major focus was on three sympatric pheasant species, including Western Horned Tragopan (Tragopan melanocephalus), Himalayan Monal (Lophophorus impejanus), and Koklass Pheasant (Pucrasia macrolopha). We used the “Call Count Method” for the population assessment in the field, and a questionnaire survey was conducted to document the risk assessment of local residents of the valley. The population assessments revealed that the Koklass Pheasant is more adapted to increasing anthropogenic activities and its population appeared more or less similar as 22 years ago. In the past 22 years, Western Tragopan and Himalayan Monal have lost about 40–50% of their populations. Human interference in the form of illegal hunting, deforestation, and overgrazing was found to be common in the valley. The study concludes that the Palas Valley habitat is ideal for pheasant species; however, human interference in the form of urbanization, habitat fragmentation, illegal hunting, and deforestation is occurring at a rapid pace, causing havoc in the pheasant population.

Biofloc technology is much highlighted these days because of its tremendous effects on aquaculture. Microbes were enriched on cheapest organic carbon source i. e., powdered banana peels and were incorporated in different aquaria rearing grass carp fingerlings under different C/N treatments (10:1, 15:1 and 20:1) and 10% water daily water exchange. The initial growth of fingerlings was recorded. The experiment was settled in triplicates for 60 days and run parallel to control group provided with commercial feed and daily water exchange. Its effect was evaluated by measuring the growth of fingerlings and water parameters of each aquarium. The average % gain in weight and length of fingerlings was obtained significantly highest (28.12 ± 0.30g and 17.29 ± 0.46cm respectively) in aquaria containing pure powdered banana peels with 10% water exchange and C/N ratio was adjusted at 20: 1 (T3) than other treatments and control. Ammonia and other water parameters were also under control in T3 than other experimental and control groups. By all counts, it was concluded that the highest C/N ratio in biofloc system had the potential to increment C. idella growth rate by reducing toxicity and could be used as fish meal substitute. Os micróbios foram enriquecidos com a fonte de carbono orgânico mais barata, i. e., cascas de banana em pó, e foram incorporadas em diferentes aquários de criação de alevinos de carpa-capim sob diferentes tratamentos C/N (10: 1, 15: 1 e 20: 1) e 10% de troca diária de água. O crescimento inicial dos alevinos foi registrado. O experimento foi resolvido em triplicatas por 60 dias e executado paralelamente ao grupo controle fornecido com ração comercial e troca diária de água. Seu efeito foi avaliado medindo o crescimento dos alevinos e os parâmetros da água de cada aquário. O% de ganho médio em peso e comprimento dos alevinos foi obtido significativamente mais alto (28,12 ± 0,30g e 17,29 ± 0,46 cm respectivamente) em aquários contendo cascas de banana em pó puro com 10% de troca de água e a relação C/N foi ajustada em 20: 1 (T3) do que outros tratamentos e controle. A amônia e outros parâmetros da água também estavam sob controle no T3 mais do que nos outros grupos experimentais e de controle. Por todas as contagens, concluiu-se que a maior razão C/N no sistema de bioflocos tem o potencial de incrementar a taxa de crescimento de C. idella reduzindo a toxicidade e pode ser usada como substituto da farinha de peixe.

The first aromatic benzicorrole termed naphthicorrole was synthesized with a carbon donor containing more than six members. Its oxidized (enedione-embedded) porphyrinoid was also obtained using different meso-aryl substitutions under sequential oxidation conditions. The resulting enedione motif of the nonaromatic porphyrinoid was regioselective to the C2 position for S or N nucleophiles. Thus, the oxidized porphyrinoid was tested as a built-in linker for biomolecules. The progress of the reaction was visually monitored due to their different conjugation pathways.

We present the design, fabrication, and radiation testing of a custom 20-channel application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) for amplification and digitization of microvolt signal levels from space instrumentation (e.g., thermopile sensors) operating in harsh space radiation environments. The ASIC is fabricated in a commercial 180-nm complementary metal oxide silicon (CMOS) process node using a combination of radiation hard by design and discrete-time analog signal processing to mitigate leakage, offset, 1/ $f$ , and thermal noise. The chip has an input-referred integrated noise voltage of 190 nV in a 240-Hz bandwidth. Irradiation with very high total ionizing dose (TID) and high-energy heavy ions was carried out to evaluate the chip’s radiation hardness. The chip’s postradiation performance evidenced parametric immunity to greater than 50 Mrad (Si) TID and no single-event latch-up up to at least 123.6 MeV-cm2/mg linear energy transfer.

SUMMARYSources of stress responsible for earthquakes occurring in the Central and Eastern United States (CEUS) include not only far-field plate boundary forces but also various local contributions. In this study, we model stress fields due to heterogeneities in the upper mantle beneath the CEUS including a high-velocity feature identified as a lithospheric drip in a recent regional P-wave tomography study. We calculate velocity and stress distributions from numerical models for instantaneous 3-D mantle flow. Our models are driven by the heterogeneous density distribution based on a temperature field converted from the tomography study. The temperature field is utilized in a composite rheology, assumed for the numerical models. We compute several geodynamic quantities with our numerical models: dynamic topography, rate of dynamic topography, gravitational potential energy (GPE), differential stress, and Coulomb stress. We find that the GPE, representative of the density anomalies in the lithosphere, is an important factor for understanding the seismicity of the CEUS. When only the upper mantle heterogeneities are included in a model, differential and Coulomb stress for the observed fault geometries in the CEUS seismic zones acts as a good indicator to predict the seismicity distribution. Our modelling results suggest that the upper mantle heterogeneities and structure below the CEUS have stress concentration effects and are likely to promote earthquake generation at preexisting faults in the region’s seismic zones. Our results imply that the mantle flow due to the upper-mantle heterogeneities can cause stress perturbations, which could help explain the intraplate seismicity in this region.

Quercetin is a well-known flavonoid that resents in fruits and vegetables. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) are widely used for packing and cosmetics. This study was conducted to determine the effect of Quercetin on the liver by ZnO-NPs toxicity in a mouse model. Thirty-six Swiss albino mice were divided into two groups, i.e. control group and the experimental group. The control group was administered saline for 28 days orally. The experimental group is further divided into three groups. To the first one, only ZnO-NPs (30 mg/kg, orally) were given for 28 days. To the second group, only quercetin (100 mg/kg, orally) was given for 28 consecutive days. To the third, a combination of quercetin and ZnO-NPs was given for alternate 28 days through the oral route. Animals were sacrificed after 14 and 28 days of dosing. Mouse liver was fixed in the 10% formalin to preserve organ integrity. Histopathological analysis was done to observe the structure of liver in treated mice. The ZnO-NPs group shows the central vein full of infiltrations, sinusoidal spaces congestions and some the necrosis of hepatocytes was observed. The quercetin group shows a normal central vein with no infiltrations. The animals that received both quercetin and ZnO-NPs showed infiltration in central vein and necrosis but less than that of only ZnO-NPs given group. Full recovery in the liver structure was observed in the quercetin+ZnO-NPs group after 28 days of treatment. This study showed the hepatoprotective effect of quercetin because it reduces the toxicity produced by ZnO-NPs.

Background: The whole world is facing one of the biggest health related disasters of the century. As a novel disease, Covid-19 has so many parameters yet to explore. Aim: To explore varied pattern of clinical presentation of COVID-19 in obstetric population in tertiary care hospital. Study design: Cross-sectional study. Methodology: This study with enrolled pregnant females (n=36) was carried out after ethical review committee’s (ERC) approval at Department of Gynecology & Obstetrics, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Lahore-Pakistan over a period of 3 months in 2020. Data was analyzed by SPSS software, version-20. Presenting symptoms of subjects were presented as frequency and percentage. Results: Total 36 patients were selected. Twenty four (66.66%) patients were symptomatic while the rest 12 (33.33%) patients were asymptomatic. Conclusion: We concluded that clinical presentation of COVID-19 pregnant patients is similar as in rest of the world and it is also same as in general population. The present study aimed to evaluate the influence of various levels of synbiotics on growth performance and intestinal morphology of fast-growing broilers during different phases. A total of 720, one-day-old straight run broilers (Ross 308) were randomly divided into 12 treatment groups according to a completely randomized design having three supplemented diets of synbiotics (a combination of probiotics and prebiotics) (0.5, 1, and 1.5%) reared at four phases [starter (1-11 days), grower (12-22 days), finisher (23-35 days), whole life (1-35 days)]. Every treatment was replicated six times with ten birds each. The parameters were evaluated in growth performance (feed intake, body weight, feed conversion ratio, and mortality) and intestinal morphology (Villus height, Crypt depth and Villus to Crypt ratio). Results of the present study revealed that growth performance, feed intake (p=0.0029), body weight (p=0.0001) and feed conversion ratio (p=0.0001) were improved with 1 percent synbiotics diet supplementation,while1.5 percent synbiotics level showed lower body weight. Crypt death (p=0.0529) has been marginally greater in the whole life. It can be inferred that a 1 % synbiotics supplemented diet has had a beneficial impact on growth and gut health throughout life.

Background An integrated structured approach to atrial fibrillation (AF) management is recommended by ESC.1 However, limited data is available on its “real-world” impact on anticoagulation uptake and subsequent AF-related hospitalisation and stroke rates. Purpose To evaluate the long-term impact of the introduction of a community-wide integrated AF service based in a secondary care hospital. Methods In September 2017 we implemented a new integrated pathway for patients with newly diagnosed “symptomatic” atrial arrhythmias across two regions (population 450,000) in England in collaboration with primary care. All patients were seen in a one-stop multi-professional clinic (Arrhythmia nurse and Electrophysiologist with ECG and echocardiogram) within 2 weeks. They underwent standardised screening for modifiable risk factors, counselling regarding diagnosis/ anticoagulation and received an individualised AF management plan as well as access to a nurse-led telephone helpline. We followed up the first 126 consecutive patients for a period of 12 months. Results Baseline characteristics are shown in Table 1, showing a high incidence of modifiable risk factors (previously un-identified in the majority). After review in clinic, 30-day AF-related readmission rates to hospital were low (1.6%, n=2) as compared to historical local data (5.8%). This was sustained at 3 months (4.7%, n=6) and at 12 months (7.9%, n=10). 99% of 83 of eligible patients (CHA2DS2-VASc score of >2 with no major contra-indications) received oral anticoagulation. Over 12 months follow-up, rates of TIA/stroke was low (n=3, 2.4%). All-cause mortality was also low (n=1, 0.8%). NHS England region-wide data showed a marked reduction in percentage of total stroke admissions with history of AF not taking anticoagulation at stroke presentation in 2018/19 as compared to 2017/18 across our two regions; this was lower than the national average and the lowest within West Yorkshire (Figure 1). Conclusions An integrated service for AF management implemented community-wide was associated with high uptake of oral anticoagulation among eligible patients and low rates of AF-related hospitalisations and all-cause mortality. Across the community, among stroke admissions with AF at presentation, a lower percentage of patients without anticoagulation was observed in comparison with previous years and neighbouring regions. Left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) is an established and effective treatment to reduce the risk of thromboembolic stroke derived from the LAA in patient with non valvular atrial fibrillation. Per-cutaneous closure of the LAA is typically guided by fluoroscopic and echocardiographic guidance. The purpose of our study is to ascertain real world radiation exposure during the LAAO performed in our institution and the interplay of different variables and patient characteristics. Our study retrospectively analyzed all consecutive LAAO procedures performed at our Tertiary level Teaching Hospital. Data was collected using Hospital electronic records and cardiac catherization laboratory records. A total of 261 patients who underwent LAAO were identified, 28% were female. Average age at the time of procedure was 77 years (range 54–93 years). Mean fluoroscopy time was 10.2 minutes (±7.0), average Radiation dose was 67 gy/cm2 (±73). Interestingly, gy/cm2 per minute of fluoroscopy averaged at 6.69 (±5.0). Subgroup analysis focused on the effect of Body mass index (BMI) on radiation dose. Since the recent introduction of a partial electronic health record system, BMI data was only available on 161 patients. The cohort with BMI 30 mean dose was 96.8±68, p=0.0025 (95% CI (65 to 14)). Analysis by the four different device types (Watchman, Watchman Flx, Wavecrest and ACP) were used for LAAO, with highest number been watchman (n=189). Upon comparing the radiation exposure in our study cohort watchman device had the least Dose adjusted Product (DAP) at 62gy/cm2 but the newer watchman flx (n=25) had slightly lower gy/cm2 per minute of fluoroscopy time 6.58±3.41 versus 6.83±5.56. In addition, operator volume between our two implanters was assessed. Our highest volume operator implanted the majority of devices (n=235) whilst the Watchman Flx was predominantly implanted by our newer implanter (n=26). Despite the relatively modest numbers of the Watchman Flx, there was minimal difference in exposure time in favor of the more senior interventionist. In conclusion, LAAO in our center has encouraging radiation safety data, which is comparable to previously published data in internationally recognized high volume centers. Cl--ion transporters (2a-2h) were synthesized based on the binding motifs of prodigiosin. Transporter 2e clearly displays Cl--ion transportation activity across both model and live cell membranes. Furthermore, 2e can disrupt Ca2+ homeostasis and increase the intracellular concentration of Ca2+ in the DLD-1 cell. This disruption can lead to Caspase-dependent apoptosis supported by CHOP expression (a marker of ER stress) and the appearance of the cleaved forms of Caspase 3 and PARP.

Aim Free clinical teaching online delivered by NHS junior doctors to address a drop in face-to-face teaching. Method We created a block-based syllabus of topics that are commonly examined and created an SBA format series of online lectures. The lectures were delivered online and the lectures were carried out by NHS doctors. We delivered 30 continuous lectures in a 30-day period that covered a variety of topics. Each lecture lasted between 45 to 60 minutes and featured real time interactive mcqs which the students had a limited time to answer to simulate exam conditions. We also maintained a unique conference like format where the lecture provider would also be assisted by a ‘host' who would provide an environment that simulated a real-life lecture with a back-and-forth conversation. Lastly each session was reinforced with a feedback survey at the end which helped us improve our service but also provided key indicators on the needs of the audience. Results We were able to provide a series of lectures that on average had a viewership of 120-150 attendees per lecture and grew a social media following of 3500 people. Although the following on social media is not a full reflection of our reach. A good indication is our prescribing safety assessment series which attracted over 2000 people interested and 260 confirmed for one event. Conclusions We feel that the format we followed in delivering medical teaching provided a very effective format and we hope to continue this into the future.

Immune system hypersensitivity is believed to contribute to mental frailty in the elderly. Solid evidence indicates NOD-like receptor pyrin domain containing-3 (NLRP3)-inflammasome activation intimately connects aging-associated chronic inflammation (inflammaging) to senile cognitive decline. Thioredoxin interacting protein (TXNIP), an inducible protein involved in oxidative stress, is essential for NLRP3 inflammasome activity. This study aims to find whether TXNIP/NLRP3 inflammasome pathway is involved in senile dementia. According to our studies on sex-matched mice, TXNIP was significantly upregulated in aged animals, paralleled by the NLRP3-inflammasome over-activity leading to enhanced caspase-1 cleavage and IL-1β maturation, in both sexes. This was closely associated with depletion of the anti-aging and cognition enhancing protein klotho, in aged males. Txnip knockout reversed age-related NLRP3-hyperactivity and enhanced thioredoxin (TRX) levels. Further, TXNIP inhibition along with verapamil replicated TXNIP/NLRP3-inflammasome downregulation in aged animals, with FOXO-1 and mTOR upregulation. These alterations concurred with substantial improvements in both cognitive and sensorimotor abilities. Together, these findings substantiate the pivotal role of TXNIP to drive inflammaging in parallel with klotho depletion and functional decline, and delineate thioredoxin system as a potential target to decelerate senile dementia.

The first fully connected aromatic carbaporphyrin dimer (6) and its bis-Pd complex (6-Pd2) that bear a rigid naphthalene motif as an internal strap were synthesized. These dimers consisted of two aromatic carbaporphyrins that shared a naphthalene motif. The π-electron conjugation of the obtained macrocycles was proposed to have two separated local 22 π-electron pathways and a 34 π-electron pathway. Their weak aromaticity was fully supported by 1H NMR spectroscopy, NICS values, ACID calculations, and ICSS plots.

Poultry industry is amongst highly developed industries of Pakistan, fulfilling the protein demand of rapidly increasing population. On the other hand, the untreated poultry waste is causing several health and environmental problems. The current study was designed to check the potential of keratinolytic fungal species for the conversion of chicken-feather waste into biofortified compost. For the purpose, three fungal species were isolated from soil samples. These strains were pure cultured and then characterized phenotypically and genotypically. BLAST searches of 18S rDNA nucleotide sequence of the fungal isolates revealed that the two fungal isolates belonged to genus Aspergillus and one belonged to genus Chrysosporium. Optimum temperature for Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger and Chrysosporium queenslandicum was 29, 26 and 25 oC, respectively. A. flavus showed maximum (53%) feather degradation, A. niger degraded feather waste up to 37%, while C. queenslandicum showed 21% keratinolytic activity on chicken feathers at their respective temperature optima. The degradation potential of these fungal species showed their ability to form compost that has agro-industrial importance.
