1. Multiscale Computational and Artificial Intelligence Models of Linear and Nonlinear Composites: A Review

Abstract: Herein, state‐of‐the‐art multiscale modeling methods have been described. This research includes notable molecular, micro‐, meso‐, and macroscale models for hard (polymer, metal, yarn, fiber, fiber‐reinforced polymer, and polymer matrix composites) and soft (biological tissues such as brain white matter [BWM]) composite materials. These numerical models vary from molecular dynamics simulations to finite‐element (FE) analyses and machine learning/deep learning surrogate models. Constitutive material models are summarized, such as viscoelastic hyperelastic, and emerging models like fractional viscoelastic. Key challenges such as meshing, data variability and material nonlinearity‐driven uncertainty, limitations in terms of computational resources availability, model fidelity, and repeatability are outlined with state‐of‐the‐art models. Latest advancements in FE modeling involving meshless methods, hybrid ML and FE models, and nonlinear constitutive material (linear and nonlinear) models aim to provide readers with a clear outlook on futuristic trends in composite multiscale modeling research and development. The data‐driven models presented here are of varying length and time scales, developed using advanced mathematical, numerical, and huge volumes of experimental results as data for digital models. An in‐depth discussion on data‐driven models would provide researchers with the necessary tools to build real‐time composite structure monitoring and lifecycle prediction models.

Abstract: Current estimates of dissolved CO2 in subduction-zone fluids based on thermodynamic models rely on a very sparse experimental data base. Here, the authors show that experimental graphite-saturated COH fluids interacting with silicates at 1–3 GPa and 800 °C display unpredictably high CO2 contents.

Abstract: We investigate the damping of Alfv\'en waves generated by the cosmic ray resonant streaming instability in the context of the cosmic ray escape and propagation in the proximity of supernova remnants. We consider ion-neutral damping, turbulent damping and non linear Landau damping in the warm ionized and warm neutral phases of the interstellar medium. For the ion-neutral damping, up-to-date damping coefficients are used. We investigate in particular whether the self-confinement of cosmic rays nearby sources can appreciably affect the grammage. We show that the ion-neutral damping and the turbulent damping effectively limit the residence time of cosmic rays in the source proximity, so that the grammage accumulated near sources is found to be negligible. Contrary to previous results, this also happens in the most extreme scenario where ion-neutral damping is less effective, namely in a medium with only neutral helium and fully ionized hydrogen. Therefore, the standard picture, in which CR secondaries are produced during the whole time spent by cosmic rays throughout the Galactic disk, need not to be deeply revisited., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Abstract: Very-high Energy (VHE) gamma-ray astroparticle physics is a relatively young field, and observations over the past decade have surprisingly revealed almost two hundred VHE emitters which appear to act as cosmic particle accelerators. These sources are an important component of the Universe, influencing the evolution of stars and galaxies. At the same time, they also act as a probe of physics in the most extreme environments known - such as in supernova explosions, and around or after the merging of black holes and neutron stars. However, the existing experiments have provided exciting glimpses, but often falling short of supplying the full answer. A deeper understanding of the TeV sky requires a significant improvement in sensitivity at TeV energies, a wider energy coverage from tens of GeV to hundreds of TeV and a much better angular and energy resolution with respect to the currently running facilities. The next generation gamma-ray observatory, the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), is the answer to this need. In this talk I will present this upcoming observatory from its design to the construction, and its potential science exploitation. CTAO will allow the entire astronomical community to explore a new discovery space that will likely lead to paradigm-changing breakthroughs. In particular, CTA has an unprecedented sensitivity to short (sub-minute) timescale phenomena, placing it as a key instrument in the future of multi-messenger and multi-wavelength time domain astronomy. 6. Effect of Heat Stabilization and Solid Lubricants on High Strain Rate Response of Polyamide 6

Abstract: In this research, high strain rate impact testing of polyamide 6 composites (PA6) with different inclusions and processes is performed to assess the material response to increasing impact loads. Testing groups are divided into four categories depending on their inclusions and process: no inclusions, heat stabilized with no inclusions, oil & Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), and glass fiber solid lubricant. Computational analysis is performed to obtain material properties such as dynamic modulus and stress-strain behavior from Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) tests. Out of the four groups, it was concluded that oil & MoS2 and glass fiber solid lubricant were more capable of maintaining dynamic modulus. In contrast, PA6 without any inclusions experienced a rapid decrease in dynamic modulus with increasing strain rate. Microscopic imagery is taken to evaluate crack formation in samples and sample deformation. Multiple side and edge cracks were developed from the specimens starting from a strain rate of 1900s−1; however, shattering of specimens was not experienced until above 2300s−1 strain rates were achieved. It is concluded that tested specimens experienced hardening trends at higher testing pressures and strain rates. A computational analysis is underway to establish the effect of heat stabilization and lubricant inclusions in PA6 strain rate-dependent mechanical response.

A.; Zech, A.; Zechlin, H.; Zhdanov, V., I; Zivec, M., The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the new-generation ground-based observatory for γ astronomy, provides unique capabilities to address significant open questions in astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. We study some of the salient areas of γ cosmology that can be explored as part of the Key Science Projects of CTA, through simulated observations of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and of their relativistic jets. Observations of AGN with CTA will enable a measurement of γ absorption on the extragalactic background light with a statistical uncertainty below 15% up to a redshift z=2 and to constrain or detect γ halos up to intergalactic-magnetic-field strengths of at least 0.3 pG . Extragalactic observations with CTA also show promising potential to probe physics beyond the Standard Model. The best limits on Lorentz invariance violation from γ astronomy will be improved by a factor of at least two to three. CTA will also probe the parameter space in which axion-like particles could constitute a significant fraction, if not all, of dark matter. Abstract: Cosmic rays escaping the Galaxy exert a force on the interstellar medium directed away from the Galactic disc. If this force is larger than the gravitational pull due to the mass embedded in the Galaxy, then galactic winds may be launched. Such outflows may have important implications for the history of star formation of the host galaxy, and in turn affect in a crucial way the transport of cosmic rays, both due to advection with the wind and to the excitation of waves by the same cosmic rays, through streaming instability. The possibility to launch cosmic ray-induced winds and the properties of such winds depend on environmental conditions, such as the density and temperature of the plasma at the base of the wind and the gravitational potential, especially the one contributed by the dark matter halo. In this paper, we make a critical assessment of the possibility to launch cosmic ray-induced winds for a Milky Way-like galaxy and how the properties of the wind depend upon the conditions at the base of the wind. Special attention is devoted to the implications of different conditions for wind launching on the spectrum of cosmic rays observed at different locations in the disc of the galaxy. We also comment on how cosmic ray-induced winds compare with recent observations of Oxygen absorption lines in quasar spectra and emission lines from blank sky, as measured by XMM-Newton/EPIC-MOS.

10. Analytical model of nonlinear twist dependency for Kevlar yarn based on local filament strain

Abstract: Kevlar KM2 600 denier yarn is often twisted to improve yarn load at failure. It is noted in ASTM-D-7269 that twisting KM2 past five twists per inch can cause a lower load at failure. Understanding the physics that govern the load decrease at higher twist ratios can lead to improved yarn designs, possibly stronger than the peak values currently seen at three turns per inch. Increasing yarn strength would enable enhanced usage of Kevlar yarn, improving chord and fabric structures. This paper describes the testing and finite element analysis methods used to probe yarn tenacity as a function of twist per inch. The performed tests indicate that strength decreases as the yarn is twisted past three twists per inch and are in agreement with previously conducted trials. The finite element model results were compared to test data performed in this study and ones reported in literature. Employing the validated simulation data, yarn damage and failure pictorials were produced. The frames showing the yarn at varying displacements illustrate the yarn failure propagation at varying twist-per-turn values. It is suggested that yarn softening as a function of twist per turn is attributed to higher strains of the outer filaments, at large amounts of twist, than of the core filaments. Previous work has shown a dependency of local filament strength to its yarn radius. The focus of this paper is to derive a comprehensive filament model, using finite element analysis, that incorporates the yarn strain gradient and is experimentally verified.

Abstract: The escape of cosmic rays from the Galaxy leads to a gradient in the cosmic ray pressure that acts as a force on the background plasma, in the direction opposite to the gravitational pull. If this force is large enough to win against gravity, a wind can be launched that removes gas from the Galaxy, thereby regulating several physical processes, including star formation. The dynamics of these cosmic ray driven winds is intrinsically non-linear in that the spectrum of cosmic rays determines the characteristics of the wind (velocity, pressure, magnetic field) and in turn the wind dynamics affects the cosmic ray spectrum. Moreover, the gradient of the cosmic ray distribution function causes excitation of Alfven waves, that in turn determine the scattering properties of cosmic rays, namely their diffusive transport. These effects all feed into each other so that what we see at the Earth is the result of these non-linear effects. Here we investigate the launch and evolution of such winds, and we determine the implications for the spectrum of cosmic rays by solving together the hydrodynamical equations for the wind and the transport equation for cosmic rays under the action of self-generated diffusion and advection with the wind and the self-excited Alfven waves., Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures. Abstract: The cosmic ray electron spectrum exhibits a break at a particle energy of $\ensuremath{\sim}1\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{TeV}$ and extends without any attenuation up to $\ensuremath{\sim}20\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{TeV}$. Synchrotron and inverse Compton energy losses strongly constrain the time of emission of $\ensuremath{\sim}20\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{TeV}$ electrons to $\ensuremath{\approx}2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{4}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{yr}$ and the distance of the potential source(s) to $\ensuremath{\approx}100--500\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{pc}$, depending on the cosmic ray diffusion coefficient. This suggests that maybe one nearby discrete source may explain the observed spectrum of high energy electrons. Given the strong energy dependence ($\ensuremath{\propto}1/E$) of the cooling time of TeV electrons, the spectral shape of the electron spectrum above the $\ensuremath{\sim}1\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{TeV}$ break strongly depends on the history of injection of these electrons from the source. In this paper we show that a local, continuous (on timescales of $\ensuremath{\sim}{10}^{5}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{yr}$) but fading electron accelerator, with a characteristic decay time of $\ensuremath{\sim}{10}^{4}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{yr}$, can naturally account for the entire spectrum of cosmic ray electrons in the TeV domain. Although the standard ``nearby pulsar'' scenario naturally meets this time condition, it is (almost) excluded by recent measurements of the positron fraction, which above $\ensuremath{\sim}100\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}$ saturates at a level well below 0.5 and drops above $\ensuremath{\sim}400--500\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}$. The second potential source population, the supernova remnants, accelerate mostly electrons, rather than positrons. However, they hardly can provide an effective production of multi-TeV electrons via the standard diffusive shock acceleration scenario for $\ensuremath{\sim}{10}^{5}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{yr}$. A third possibility are stellar wind shocks, which however are likely to be continuous with nearly constant luminosity on timescales $\ensuremath{\gg}10\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{kyr}$ and probably cannot match the time requirement of our potential source. Therefore, we face a real challenge in the identification of the origin of the source of multi-TeV electrons. Thus, the link of this source with known particle accelerators would require a dramatic revision of the standard paradigms of acceleration and escape in such objects.

Abstract: International audience; Low-energy cosmic rays are the major ionization agents of molecular clouds. However, it has been shown that, if the cosmic ray spectrum measured by Voyager 1 is representative of the whole Galaxy, the predicted ionization rate in diffuse clouds fails to reproduce data by 1–2 orders of magnitude, implying that an additional source of ionization must exist. One of the solutions proposed to explain this discrepancy is based on the existence of an unknown low-energy (in the range 1 keV–1 MeV, not probed by Voyager) cosmic ray component, called carrot when first hypothesized by Reeves and collaborators in the seventies. Here we investigate the energetic required by such scenario. We show that the power needed to maintain such low-energy component is comparable of even larger than that needed to explain the entire observed cosmic ray spectrum. Moreover, if the interstellar turbulent magnetic field has to sustain a carrot, through second-order Fermi acceleration, the required turbulence level would be definitely too large compared to the one expected at the scale resonant with such low-energy particles. Our study basically rules out all the plausible sources of a cosmic ray carrot, thus making such hidden component unlikely to be an appealing and viable source of ionization in molecular clouds.

Abstract: We study the problem of the escape and transport of Cosmic-Rays (CR) from a source embedded in a fully ionised, hot phase of the interstellar medium (HIM). In particular, we model the CR escape and their propagation in the source vicinity taking into account excitation of Alfv\'enic turbulence by CR streaming and mechanisms damping the self-excited turbulence itself. Our estimates of escape radii and times result in large values (100 pc, $2\times10^5$ yr) for particle energies $\lesssim20$ GeV and smaller values for particles with increasing energies (35 pc and 14 kyr at 1 TeV). These escape times and radii, when used as initial conditions for the CR propagation outside the source, result in relevant suppression of the diffusion coefficient (by a factor 5-10) on time-scales comparable with their (energy dependent) escape time-scale. The damping mechanisms are fast enough that even on shorter time scales the Alfv\'enic turbulence is efficiently damped, and the ratio between random and ordered component of the magnetic field is $\delta B/B_0\ll 1$, justifying the use of quasi-linear theory. 15. Multiscale modeling of randomly interwoven fibers for prediction of KM2 Kevlar yarn strength and damage

Abstract: Modeling Kevlar yarn response as a function of twist requires creating a model at the filament level that incorporates capturing the mechanical interaction of numerous fibers. The inherent complexity of building a multiscale interwoven fibrous structure manually is prohibitive for such an endeavor; therefore, computer-aided simulations are preferred. In this study, a random walk methodology was employed to generate a fibrous structure along the axis of a yarn. Since the directionality of the fibers is randomly oriented along the axis, the fibers can wind around each other and tangle or terminate on demand. The resultant geometry can represent the tortuous path that yarn filaments experience. Yarn twist can be introduced through imposing a rotation matrix to the geometry or conducting an initial analysis that applies the preload. The analysis method employed in this paper captures the correct prestress of the twisted yarns at zero, three, and ten twists per inch. The analysis then loaded the yarn until filament fracture occurred. The predicted ultimate load was within 5% for all three twists per inch analyzed. The zero twists per inch linear response matched test results to within 5%.

Abstract: International audience; In the last few years, several experiments have shown that the cosmic ray spectrum below the knee is not a perfect power law. In particular, the proton and helium spectra show a spectral hardening by ∼0.1–0.2 in spectral index at particle energies of ∼ 200–300 GeV nucleon$^{−1}$. Moreover, the helium spectrum is found to be harder than that of protons by ∼0.1 and some evidence for a similar hardening was also found in the spectra of heavier elements. Here, we consider the possibility that the hardening may be the result of a dispersion in the slope of the spectrum of cosmic rays accelerated at supernova remnant shocks. Such a dispersion is indeed expected within the framework of non-linear theories of diffusive shock acceleration, which predict steeper (harder) particle spectra for larger (smaller) cosmic ray acceleration efficiencies.

Abstract: The penetration of Armor Piercing, Capped (APC) projectiles into Special Treatment Steel is not new [1]. Many years ago the means of calculating the ballistic limit, residual velocity, etc. were based on semi-empirical formulae garnered from actual tests [2]. Major geometric changes in the design of a projectile, cap and windscreen made some difference in the ability of the shell to penetrate armor plate. The purpose of this paper is to attempt to determine a reasonable method to model the mechanical properties of the target material as well as the projectile components to reasonably match the test data and compare with the semi-empirical models. The projectile chosen is a U.S. Navy 14 inch Mark 16 Model 8 projectile depicted in Figure 1. This projectile has been modeled using the Abaqus finite element software. It is believed that the triaxiality of the target material has a great effect on the results [3]. This was compared to the semi-empirical formulae of Lambert and Thompson as well as that of Okun [4]. The modifications to the mechanical properties in the Abaqus model to incorporate triaxiality are discussed. The models were in very good agreement over a fair range of target thicknesses and impact obliquities but not at high obliquities and large target thicknesses.

18. Fiberwalk: a random walk approach to fiber representative volume element creation

Abstract: Attaining accurate representative geometry for a finite element analysis at various scales can be a challenging research task. Added complications arise when the geometry is representing a manufactured or biological composite. In this study, a representative geometry of linear fibrous composites was created at the microscale and is employed to reproduce crystalline microfibril stacking of Kevlar to form a single fibril joined by a non-ordered crystal structure. The structure can have ellipsoidal or rectangular microfibrils stacked in ellipsoidal or rectangular fibrils and may have any desired packing ratio within the 1–100% range. In order to build a fibrous structure along a path, a Random Walk methodology was used. Since the directionality of the fibers is random, but always stepping from one side of the path toward the other, the fibers can wind around each other and tangle or terminate if needed. Another key concept of this method is the addition of a rotation matrix operation for the path of the fibers. This allows the path around the three local coordinates to be in a linear or sinusoidal direction. The resultant geometry produced can represent the tortuous path nanofibrils undergo. Moreover, rotation about the path axis allows for the twisted geometry of ring spun yarn, and metal cable to be reproduced. Inclusion of spherical objects to the path of the fibers has been accommodated to reproduce fiber projection around, or end at, an obstruction in their path. This approach allows representing impurities at the fibril, fiber, or yarn level of composite fabric manufacturing.

Abstract: Sub-clinical lung impairment, mostly represented by a reduced diffusion of alveolar gases, is a recognised complication of advanced primary biliary cirrhosis. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence and type of pulmonary involvement in primary biliary cirrhosis and the relationship between lung function abnormalities and selected epidemiological and clinical variables. Sixty-one patients with different stages of primary biliary cirrhosis consecutively seen in our outpatient clinic were evaluated. The advancement of primary biliary cirrhosis was characterised by the histological stage, the presence of signs of portal hypertension and the Mayo Risk Score: a Cox regression model using serum bilirubin and albumin levels, prothrombin time, age and degree of oedema as selected variables. We measured static and dynamic lung volumes, by means of a spirometer, and diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide. Rheumatological disorders were evaluated by an independent rheumatologist. No patient complained of respiratory symptoms. Airway obstruction was present in one patient. In 24 patients (39%) the alveolar diffusion capacity was reduced. We did not find any significant relationship between diffusing capacity and smoking habits, advancement of liver disease and concomitant Sjogren syndrome. Abstract: HBV-DNA was measured by the spot hybridization technique in serial serum samples obtained from 47 HBsAg carriers followed up for a mean of 4 years. The levels of HBV-DNA were compared to the conventional HBV serology and immunopathology to determine the relation of active HBV replication to the outcome of hepatitis and the suitability of Italian HBsAg carriers for treatment with DNA inhibitors. HBV-DNA was found in 26 carriers (53%) and persisted with comparable serum levels in 24 of them throughout the follow up. The occurrence rate of an unfavorable outcome as determined by histological evidence of cirrhosis was 6% versus 44% (p less than 0.01) in carriers with active viral infection (greater than 1 ng/ml of HBV-DNA) and in patients with absent or low levels of viral DNA (less than 1 pg/ml), respectively. Progression of the liver disease could not be predicted on the basis of active HBV replication and was presumably related to factors other than synthesis of HBV. In many patients with inactive viral infection a primary pathogenic factor was the HBV-associated delta, an agent with a putative RNA genome against which DNA inhibitors have no rationale and possibly no effects. The majority of Italian carriers do not appear suitable for treatment with DNA inhibitors and they should be considered for a different therapy.

Abstract: The spectrum and morphology of the diffuse Galactic gamma-ray emission carries valuable information on cosmic ray (CR) propagation. Recent results obtained by analyzing Fermi-LAT data accumulated over seven years of observation show a substantial variation of the CR spectrum as a function of the distance from the Galactic Center. The spatial distribution of the CR density in the outer Galaxy appears to be weakly dependent upon the galactocentric distance, as found in previous studies as well, while the density in the central region of the Galaxy was found to exceed the value measured in the outer Galaxy. At the same time, Fermi-LAT data suggest a gradual spectral softening while moving outward from the center of the Galaxy to its outskirts. These findings represent a challenge for standard calculations of CR propagation based on assuming a uniform diffusion coefficient within the Galactic volume. Here we present a model of non-linear CR propagation in which transport is due to particle scattering and advection off self-generated turbulence. We find that for a realistic distribution of CR sources following the spatial distribution of supernova remnants and the space dependence of the magnetic field on galactocentric distance, both the spatial profile of CR density and the spectral softening can easily be accounted for., 6 pages, 3 figures. Abstract: Background & Aims: We conducted a study to estimate population coverage and detection rate (DR) achievable through different strategies of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening. Methods: A population-based multicenter randomized trial comparing 3 strategies was used: (1) biennial immunologic fecal occult blood test (FIT), (2) "once only" sigmoidoscopy (FS), and (3) "once only" colonoscopy (TC). A random sample of men and women, aged 55 to 64 years, was drawn from general practitioners' (GP) rosters. Eligible subjects, randomized within GP, were mailed a personal invitation. Nonresponders in groups 2 and 3 were invited again at 12 and 24 months. Screenees with "high-risk" distal polyps (villous component >20%, high-grade dysplasia, CRC, size ≥10 mm, >2 adenomas) at FS, or with positive FIT, were referred for TC. Results: The attendance rate was 32.3% (1965/6075) for FIT, 32.3% (1944/6018) for FS, 26.5% (1597/6021) for TC. FIT detected 2 patients with CRC (0.1%) and 21 with an advanced adenoma (1.1%). The corresponding figures were as follows: 12 (0.6%) and 86 (4.5%) patients, respectively, for FS; 13 (0.8%) and 100 (6.3%) patients, respectively, for TC. To detect 1 advanced neoplasm, it would be necessary to invite 264 people with FIT, 60 with FS, 53 with TC. FS would have detected 27.3% of the proximal advanced neoplasms detected at TC. 23. Silicate dissolution boosts the CO

Abstract: Estimates of dissolved CO2 in subduction-zone fluids are based on thermodynamic models, relying on a very sparse experimental data base. Here, we present experimental data at 1–3 GPa, 800 °C, and ∆FMQ ≈ −0.5 for the volatiles and solute contents of graphite-saturated fluids in the systems COH, SiO2–COH ( + quartz/coesite) and MgO–SiO2–COH ( + forsterite and enstatite). The CO2 content of fluids interacting with silicates exceeds the amounts measured in the pure COH system by up to 30 mol%, as a consequence of a decrease in water activity probably associated with the formation of organic complexes containing Si–O–C and Si–O–Mg bonds. The interaction of deep aqueous fluids with silicates is a novel mechanism for controlling the composition of subduction COH fluids, promoting the deep CO2 transfer from the slab–mantle interface to the overlying mantle wedge, in particular where fluids are stable over melts., Current estimates of dissolved CO2 in subduction-zone fluids based on thermodynamic models rely on a very sparse experimental data base. Here, the authors show that experimental graphite-saturated COH fluids interacting with silicates at 1–3 GPa and 800 °C display unpredictably high CO2 contents.

Abstract: We present the results of a search for gravitational waves associated with 223 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the InterPlanetary Network (IPN) in 2005-2010 during LIGO's fifth and sixth science runs and Virgo's first, second and third science runs. The IPN satellites provide accurate times of the bursts and sky localizations that vary significantly from degree scale to hundreds of square degrees. We search for both a well-modeled binary coalescence signal, the favored progenitor model for short GRBs, and for generic, unmodeled gravitational wave bursts. Both searches use the event time and sky localization to improve the gravitational-wave search sensitivity as compared to corresponding all-time, all-sky searches. We find no evidence of a gravitational-wave signal associated with any of the IPN GRBs in the sample, nor do we find evidence for a population of weak gravitational-wave signals associated with the GRBs. For all IPN-detected GRBs, for which a sufficient duration of quality gravitational-wave data is available, we place lower bounds on the distance to the source in accordance with an optimistic assumption of gravitational-wave emission energy of $10^{-2}M_{\odot}c^2$ at 150 Hz, and find a median of 13 Mpc. For the 27 short-hard GRBs we place 90% confidence exclusion distances to two source models: a binary neutron star coalescence, with a median distance of 12Mpc, or the coalescence of a neutron star and black hole, with a median distance of 22 Mpc. 25. A Hierarchical Model for Kevlar Fiber Failure

Abstract: Advances in materials characterization at the submicron and the nano-scales have progressed in the last decade. At the same time, computational capability for finite element analyses are also improving through technological developments in parallel computing. However, large computational models of nanostructured materials are currently limited by the lack of validation data. The work reported in this paper describes the formulation of a representative nanoscale model for Kevlar fibers based on failure section imaging that captures its fibril and microfibril structure. In this regard, a finite element model that captures the nanoscale structure of Kevlar fibers was developed to predict their macroscale response. Experimental derivation of geometrical parameters and physical properties of fibrils and microfibrils is challenging due to the sensitive nature of polymers. There are several microfibril parameters that reflect into effective fiber response, such as the microfibril constitutive behavior, length, diameter, shape, the inter-fibril shear and normal strength, and the inter-fibril normal and tangential force decay the after peak strength is achieved. This paper investigates the effect of each of the aforementioned parameters on the initial modulus, yield strength, ultimate strength, and strain rate dependence of Kevlar fibers with 10 μm average diameter. The sensitivity of the macroscale response to each microfibril parameter can be used to identify areas where experimental information can further enable the predictive capability of the computational model. A parametric study was performed to calculate the effective macroscale fiber response. Subsequently, a local gradient sensitivity method was employed to plot the sensitivity of the fiber response to each microfibril parameter.Copyright © 2013 by ASME

26. Temporary endoscopic metallic stent for idiopathic esophageal achalasia

Abstract: Idiopathic achalasia is a motor disorder of the esophagus of unknown etiology caused by loss of motor neurons determining an altered motility. It may determine severe symptoms such as progressive dysphagia, regurgitations, and pulmonary aspirations. Many therapeutic options may be offered to patients with achalasia, from surgery to endoscopic treatments such as pneumatic dilation, botulinum injection, peroral endoscopic myotomy, or endoscopic stenting. Recently, temporary placement of a stent was proposed by Cheng as therapy for achalasia disorders, whereas no Western authors have dealt with it up to date. The present study reports our preliminary experience in 7 patients with achalasia treated with a temporary stent. Partially covered self-expanding metallic stents (Micro-Tech, Nanjin, China) 80 mm long and 30 mm wide were placed under fluoroscopic control and removed after 6 days. Clinical follow-up was scheduled to check endoscopic success, symptoms release, and complications. The placement and the removal of the stents were obtained in all patients without complications. Mean clinical follow-up was 19 months. Five out of 7 patients referred total symptoms release and 2 experienced significant improvement of dysphagia. The procedure was not time consuming and was safe; no mild or severe complications were registered. In conclusion, our results may suggest a possible safe and effective endoscopic alternative treatment in patients with achalasia; however, further larger studies are necessary to confirm these promising, but very preliminary, data.

Abstract: Early endoscopic diagnosis improves the prognosis of patients with gastric cancer, as shown by the finding that 5-year survival rates exceeding 90% are observed in Japanese patients with early gastric cancer. It has been hypothesized that tumor size may have prognostic significance; therefore, a distinction between minute, small, and large early gastric cancers has been proposed. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of minute and small early gastric cancers in Western countries and to compare their clinicopathologic features with those of large early gastric cancers. Of 465 Italian patients with gastric cancer who were studied, 20.5% had an early gastric cancer, and 34.7% of these were minute or small. Tumor size is correlated with intramural spreading and metastasis to perigastric lymph nodes. Nodal involvement occurs more frequently in the diffuse than in the intestinal type of early gastric cancer. Long-term survival rate is not correlated with tumor size, intramural spreading, or nodal metastasis. The minute and small early gastric cancers of Italian patients are indistinguishable from those occurring in Japanese patients. These lesions are more common than previously thought and should be carefully searched for by endoscopists. The correlation of tumor size with intramural invasion and perigastric lymph node metastasis suggests that minute and small early gastric cancers are precursors of large early gastric cancers. Although the distinction between minute, small, and large early gastric cancers is of low prognostic value, the distinction might be useful for selecting different therapeutic approaches.

Abstract: Bleeding peptic ulcer is a life threatening condition with high mortality rate but often treatable by endoscopy. Surgical indications in case of gastroduodenal ulcers are confined to endoscopic and radiological failures in bleeding control. Duodenal fistula (DF) is a rare complication of gastric resection and even if a rare event it may be a life threatening condition. Surgical and medical options could not solve the DF. Herein we report a case of an old patient underwent emergency gastrectomy for ulcer’s bleeding who developed DF associated to sepsis, malnutrition and, hydro-electrolyte disorders not responding to surgical and medical attempts. We demonstrated, for the first time, the efficacy of over the scope clips (OTSC®) in the treatment of postoperative duodenal fistulas not responding to surgical and medical treatment in high risk patient.

30. [French validation of the anger reactions and goals scale (RBC)]

Abstract: The study presents the French validation of a German scale (AERZ) [Diagnostica 49 (2003) 97-109, revised Eur J Pers (2009)] measuring anger regulation. The French validation (RBC scale) comprises two subscales measuring seven anger reactions and seven anger goals. Disentangling dimensions related to anger reactions and anger goals, respectively, is the main advantage of this scale. In addition to seven cognitive-behavioral anger reactions (i.e., venting, rumination, submission, feedback, distraction, humor and downplaying the incident's negative impact), the RBC scale also addresses the cognitive representations underlying anger reactions by exploring anger goals (i.e., enforcing personal standards, enforcing social standards, downregulating affect, avoiding conflicts, protecting one's reputation, weighing costs and gaining revenge).The original scale was translated following the scientific guidelines and recommendations for cultural adaptation of instruments. The adapted French version was tested with a sample of students (n=184, 70.7% were females) from the University of Luxembourg (M=21.31, S.D.=1.93). Students filled in a questionnaire composed of the RBC scale, the SF-36 quality of life scale and the STAXI-II anger instrument. The RBC scale comprises 56 items; reactions are assessed on a 4 point Likert scale from "almost never" (1) to "always" (4), whereas goals are assessed on a 4 point Likert scale from "not at all" (1) to "completely" (4).Factor analysis revealed a seven-factor solution for the anger reactions subscale (that explained 63.13% of the common variance) and a six-factor solution for the anger goals subscale (that explained 57.45% of the common variance). The original factorial structure was examined in confirmatory factor analysis. For the anger reactions subscale, a good model fit was found, with chi(2)(329)=546.38, p0.1, CFI=0.87, RMSEA=0.06. For the anger goals subscale, a satisfactory model fit was observed, with chi(2)(335)=658.52, p0.1, CFI=0.78, RMSEA=0.07 revealing a six-factorial structure that differed from the original version in the combination of two dimensions ("downregulating affect" and "protecting one's reputation"). The RBC scale's internal consistencies were found satisfactory with Cronbach's alphas ranging from 0.60 to 0.83 for the various dimensions. Part-whole correlations ranged from r(it)=0.27 to 0.80. Gender differences showed that female participants used significantly more rumination strategies and emotional regulation, whereas male students demonstrated greater humor in anger situations. Significant correlations between RBC and STAXI-II confirmed the construct validity of the RBC scale. Criteria validity was analyzed using the predictive value of the RBC dimensions on the quality of life subscales of the SF-36.The present results support the validity, the reliability and the sensitivity of the 56 items scale on anger regulation and its use in psychological research. Although our findings need to be replicated and the test-retest validity is subject to future verification, the present validation of the RBC scale offers a multidimensional inventory for measuring anger reactions and anger goals. This inventory may be used, for example, as a diagnostic tool or for testing the effectiveness of anger management interventions.

Abstract: La caratterizzazione di opere d'arte in termini di materiali e tecniche artistiche richiede metodologie di analisi particolarmente sensibili, soprattutto per studi di provenienza e classificazione. Una tecnica adatta per questo scopo è la Spettrometria di Massa con Sorgente al Plasma, accoppiata ad un sistema di Ablazione Laser, in caso di indagini superficiali e stratigrafiche. In questo lavoro viene discussa l'applicazione della tecnica a casi studio di indagine di materiali lapidei (malte e stucchi), manufatti metallici archeologici e ossa umane preistoriche. 32. Improving Reliability by Reducing Tolerance Stack-Up Failures

Abstract: Excalibur is the Army's 155-mm guided bullet for howitzers. Once fielded, Excalibur is expected to have a reliability of 90%. This paper describes a method to predict the reliability of the locking mechanism in the fuze safe and arm device. Hand calculations showed that a locking failure could occur if several dimensions were machined close to a tolerance limit in the same device. The probability of a locking failure was estimated using Monte Carlo simulations and a First Order Probability method. The governing equation was a function of about a dozen other equations and 21 variables. A probability distribution function described each variable's nominal dimension and tolerance. Both Monte Carlo simulations and First Order Probability methods predicted fewer than 35 failures in a million devices. Output also included a ranking of dimensions and tolerances and their relative effect on reliability.

Abstract: BACKGROUND Although there is general consensus concerning the efficacy of colorectal cancer screening, there is a lack of agreement about which routine screening strategy should be adopted. We compared the participation and detection rates achievable through different strategies of colorectal cancer screening. METHODS From November 1999 through June 2001 we conducted a multicenter, randomized trial in Italy among a sample of 55-64 year olds in the general population who had an average risk of colorectal cancer. People with previous colorectal cancer, adenomas, inflammatory bowel disease, a recent (< or =2 years) colorectal endoscopy or fecal occult blood test (FOBT), or two first-degree relatives with colorectal cancer were excluded. Eligible subjects were randomly assigned, within the roster of their general practitioner, to 1) biennial FOBT (delivered by mail), 2) biennial FOBT (delivered by general practitioner or a screening facility), 3) patient's choice of FOBT or "once-only" sigmoidoscopy, 4) "once-only" sigmoidoscopy, or 5) sigmoidoscopy followed by biennial FOBT. An immunologic FOBT was used. Participation and detection rates of the strategies tested were compared using multivariable logistic regression models that adjusted for age, sex, and screening center. All statistical tests were two-sided. RESULTS Of 28 319 people sampled, 1637 were excluded and 26 682 were randomly assigned to a screening arm. After excluding undelivered letters (n = 427), the participation rates for groups 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 were 30.1% (682/2266), 28.1% (1654/5893), 27.1% (970/3579), 28.1% (1026/3650), and 28.1% (3049/10 867), respectively. Of the 2858 subjects screened by FOBT, 122 (4.3%) had a positive test result, 10 (3.5 per 1000) had colorectal cancer, and 39 (1.4%) had an advanced adenoma. Among the 4466 subjects screened by sigmoidoscopy, 341 (7.6%) were referred for colonoscopy, 18 (4 per 1000) had colorectal cancer, and 229 (5.1%) harbored an advanced adenoma. CONCLUSIONS The participation rates were similar for sigmoidoscopy and FOBT. The detection rate for advanced neoplasia was three times higher following screening by sigmoidoscopy than by FOBT.

Abstract: Day Bed Unit at the Department of Gastroenterology. Experience of a study group. We analyzed the activity of the Day-Bed Unit at the Department of Gastroenterology of Turin Hospital (Molinette). The quality of the service provided and the days of stay in hospital for each admission were evaluated in terms of cost benefit ratio. The average stay in hospital for each admission was 2.57 days as opposed to 9.3 in the in patient ward. Patients were divided in subsets according to the cause of admission. Stratifying the patients according to diagnosis showed a hospital stay of 2.73 days for liver disease and of 2.81 for pancreas and biliary disease. Among the admissions for liver disease, pre or posttranspiant patients required 2.89 days as opposed to 2.62 days of those who were treated for esophageal varices. Thus, the cause of admission was a factor influencing length of hospital stay. Patients needing non surgical treatment for liver cancer took 2.22 days if treated with percutaneous ethanol injection; those undergoing chemoembolization required 2.93 days. In conclusion, the day bed unit has proven to be able to provide a service with a good cost benefit ratio. Patients admitted to this service may be withdrawn from the waiting list of the in patient ward, thus reducing the waiting time. Optimization of this service needs integration with the surroudings Units within the Department and in the Hospital.

Abstract: The "groove pancreatitis" is a special form of segmental chronic pancreatitis affecting the "groove" between pancreatic head, duodenum and common bile duct. This type of chronic pancreatitis was first described in 1973 and only few cases have been reported in literature. Unlike other forms of chronic pancreatitis, this is often preceded by peptic ulcers, gastric resections or biliary tract diseases; it could be associated with cysts of the duodenal wall and pancreatic cysts. Abdominal pain, vomiting due to duodenal stenosis, obstructive jaundice and weight loss are the most common presenting symptoms. The radiological features show a pancreatic mass similar to a pancreatic head carcinoma and the discrimination of groove pancreatitis from pancreatic carcinoma is often difficult or even impossible in some patients. We describe a case of groove pancreatitis treated with pancreatoduodenectomy, reviewing the clinical and radiological features. We remark that the groove pancreatitis is a disease that must be known and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of pancreatic carcinoma.

Abstract: We report our experience with 49 patients who underwent fistulosphincterotomy (FS) after cannulation of the common bile duct (CBD) by standard approaches had failed, due to suspected CBD obstruction. Only 4% of our cases turned out to have no biliary obstruction at all. The morbidity rate was 16%, and the mortality rate was 2%. In our series, FS raised the success rate of CBD cannulation from 90% to 96%. Ninety-five percent of successful cannulations were followed by endoscopic treatment. There were no cases of perforation or hemorrhage, and no difference in the success rate between FS in flat papillas and FS in bulging papillas, thanks, perhaps, to the technique we used. Our findings would indicate that FS is a useful procedure involving additional but not prohibitive risks. Nonetheless, it should be used only when CBD obstruction is strongly suspected and standard methods are not successful.

Abstract: A food-borne outbreak of pharyngitis from group A streptococcus developed in people attending wedding banquets in the same restaurant on July 5-8, 1986. Of the 300 people interviewed, 179 reported illness; pharyngeal swabs were taken from 115 ill people; from 63 (53%) of them group A streptococci, belonging to serotype T28, M28, were isolated. Statistical analysis performed using chi-square and Cochran's test showed that a prawn hors-d'oeuvre served on July 5 and squills or/and custard cake served on July 7 could have been a possible source of infection. Six people on the staff, 5 of whom belonged to the family of the restaurant manager, and the manager's three young daughters were colonized by the same group A serotype. A possible previous diffusion of the strain among the staff followed by contamination of the food was suspected.

47. Self-evaluation in young children

Abstract: A series of studies was conducted to examine the development of self-evaluation in children aged 1-5 years. Developmental changes in children's reactions to achievement-related outcomes were assessed in a variety of contexts, using different tasks and different criteria for success. The first study of 1-3-year-olds revealed an increased social orientation after the age of 21 months. Only children over this age were more likely to look up at the experimenter after they had produced an outcome themselves than after the same outcome had been produced by the experimenter. These older children were also more likely than younger children to call their mothers' attention to their achievements in a free-play situation. In a second study, on a task with visibly salient success versus failure outcomes, children aged 2-5 years responded to success with positive affect (e.g., smiling) and to failure with avoidance reactions (e.g., looking away from the experimenter). Praise enhanced children's positive affective reactions to success, but its effect was modest. In the final study, winning or losing on a competitive task was not understood by children below age 33 months and had no effect on their affective reactions to the task. In contrast, winning enhanced older children's pleasure in completing the task. Three stages are proposed in the development of self-evaluation. In the first stage, children experience joy in causality, but they lack the cognitive representational skills required for self-evaluation in a self-reflective sense, and they do not anticipate others' reactions to their performance. In the second stage, beginning before the age of 2 years, children anticipate adult reactions, seeking positive reactions to their successes and endeavoring to avoid negative reactions to failure. The proposed third stage involves a gradual internalization of external reactions, with children beginning to evaluate their performance and react emotionally to success and failure independently of their expectations of adult reactions. Although all studies focused on achievement outcomes, the development of self-evaluation in the moral domain may parallel this developmental sequence proposed for the achievement domain. It is also proposed that caretakers' reactions to rule violations might engender concerns about meeting adult expectations in achievement contexts.

48. [Percutaneous treatment of bile duct lithiasis. Personal experience in the first 150 cases]

Abstract: Since 1983 we have percutaneously treated 150 cases of bile duct lithiasis in which previous endoscopic maneuvers had been incomplete or unfeasible. Complete resolution of lithiasis was obtained in 139 of 150 patients. In 6 cases only partial success was obtained but symptoms subsided. In 2 cases the treatment failed and the patients underwent surgery. Minor complications were observed in 12.6% of patients and resolved either spontaneously or by percutaneous maneuvers. Mortality rate was 2%. After a follow-up period of 6-12 months, 9 patients had a recurrence, completely resolved with further percutaneous treatment. These cases never required surgery. We obtained the best results in patients with stones residual after cholecystectomy or a iatrogenic stricture of the biliary tree. We obtained good results in massive lithiasis with combined endoscopic, surgical and radiological procedures. Morbidity and mortality rates were lower than in surgical series and similar to the endoscopic ones. The short hospitalization, the low cost and the possibility of treatment on an outpatient basis should promote the spreading of percutaneous techniques in the treatment of bile duct lithiasis.

Abstract: Twenty-seven carriers of the hepatitis B surface antigen who underwent liver transplantation in Italy and Belgium for terminal Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) cirrhosis were investigated. In 22 of the patients, HDV infection recurred. Two patients died of coexisting HDV and hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation. Four patients who died of unrelated causes were found to have HDV without signs of HBV reactivation. Five patients (18%) cleared both HBV and HDV after transplantation with no evidence of hepatitis (mean follow-up, 29 months). In many surviving patients, HDV infection recurred early without signs of HBV reactivation. Disease returned in the 11 HDV-infected patients in whom HBV also recurred. Histological hepatitis did not recur during an interim of 12-33 months in the 5 HDV-infected patients in whom HBV did not return. The overall medium-term survival in patients with HDV who underwent transplantation was 77.7%. Liver transplantation offers patients with HDV a hope of cure from disease despite a high risk of reinfection. In the transplantation setting, HDV can cause subclinical infections without any apparent assistance from HBV; these infections become symptomatic only if and when HBV reactivates. Thus, HDV may not be in itself pathogenic but requires cooperation from HBV to cause the appearance of the disease.
