S. J. Brennan et al., We present the bolometric light curve, identification and analysis of the progenitor candidate, and preliminary modelling of AT 2016jbu (Gaia16cfr). We find a progenitor consistent with a ∼ 22–25 M⊙ yellow hypergiant surrounded by a dusty circumstellar shell, in agreement with what has been previously reported. We see evidence for significant photometric variability in the progenitor, as well as strong Hα emission consistent with pre-existing circumstellar material. The age of the environment, as well as the resolved stellar population surrounding AT 2016jbu, supports a progenitor age of >10 Myr, consistent with a progenitor mass of ∼22 M⊙. A joint analysis of the velocity evolution of AT 2016jbu and the photospheric radius inferred from the bolometric light curve shows the transient is consistent with two successive outbursts/explosions. The first outburst ejected material with velocity ∼650 km s−1, while the second, more energetic event ejected material at ∼4500 km s−1. Whether the latter is the core collapse of the progenitor remains uncertain. Brennan, S. J. et al (ASTROPY Collaboration), We present the results from a high-cadence, multiwavelength observation campaign of AT 2016jbu (aka Gaia16cfr), an interacting transient. This data set complements the current literature by adding higher cadence as well as extended coverage of the light-curve evolution and late-time spectroscopic evolution. Photometric coverage reveals that AT 2016jbu underwent significant photometric variability followed by two luminous events, the latter of which reached an absolute magnitude of MV ∼-18.5 mag. This is similar to the transient SN 2009ip whose nature is still debated. Spectra are dominated by narrow emission lines and show a blue continuum during the peak of the second event. AT 2016jbu shows signatures of a complex, non-homogeneous circumstellar material (CSM). We see slowly evolving asymmetric hydrogen line profiles, with velocities of 500 km s-1 seen in narrow emission features from a slow-moving CSM, and up to 10 000 km s-1 seen in broad absorption from some high-velocity material. Late-time spectra (∼+1 yr) show a lack of forbidden emission lines expected from a core-collapse supernova and are dominated by strong emission from H, He i, and Ca ii. Strong asymmetric emission features, a bumpy light curve, and continually evolving spectra suggest an inhibit nebular phase. We compare the evolution of H α among SN 2009ip-like transients and find possible evidence for orientation angle effects. We present the first estimate of the Galactic nova rate based on optical transient surveys covering the entire sky. Using data from the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) and \textit{Gaia} -- the only two all-sky surveys to report classical nova candidates -- we find 39 confirmed Galactic novae and 7 additional unconfirmed candidates discovered from 2019--2021, yielding a nova discovery rate of $\approx 14$ yr$^{-1}$. Using accurate Galactic stellar mass models, three-dimensional dust maps, and incorporating realistic nova light curves, we have built a sophisticated Galactic nova model that allows an estimate of the recovery fraction of Galactic novae from these surveys over this time period. The observing capabilities of each survey are distinct: the high cadence of ASAS-SN makes it sensitive to fast novae, while the broad observing filter and high spatial resolution of \textit{Gaia} make it more sensitive to highly reddened novae across the entire Galactic plane and bulge. Despite these differences, we find that ASAS-SN and \textit{Gaia} give consistent Galactic nova rates, with a final joint nova rate of $26 \pm 5$ yr$^{-1}$. This inferred nova rate is substantially lower than found by many other recent studies. Critically assessing the systematic uncertainties in the Galactic nova rate, we argue that the role of faint fast-fading novae has likely been overestimated, but that subtle details in the operation of transient alert pipelines can have large, sometimes unappreciated effects on transient recovery efficiency. Context: The timescale of a microlensing event scales as a square root of a lens mass. Therefore, long-lasting events are important candidates for massive lenses, including black holes. Aims: Here we present the analysis of the Gaia18cbf microlensing event reported by the Gaia Science Alerts system. It exhibited a long timescale and features that are common for the annual microlensing parallax effect. We deduce the parameters of the lens based on the derived best fitting model. Methods: We used photometric data collected by the Gaia satellite as well as the follow-up data gathered by the ground-based observatories. We investigated the range of microlensing models and used them to derive the most probable mass and distance to the lens using a Galactic model as a prior. Using known mass-brightness relation we determined how likely it is that the lens is a main-sequence (MS) star. Results: This event is one of the longest ever detected, with the Einstein timescale of $t_\mathrm{E}=491.41^{+128.31}_{-84.94}$ days for the best solution and $t_\mathrm{E}=453.74^{+178.69}_{-105.74}$ days for the second-best. Assuming Galaxy priors, this translates to the most probable lens mass of $M_\mathrm{L} = 2.65^{+5.09}_{-1.48} M_\odot$ and $M_\mathrm{L} = 1.71^{+3.78}_{-1.06} M_\odot$, respectively. As shown by recent gravitational wave detections, galaxies harbour an unknown population of black holes at high masses. In our Galaxy such dark objects can be found and studied solely via gravitational microlensing methods. This paper described our search for black-hole lenses both in archived OGLE data and among on-going microlensing events found by OGLE and Gaia. That combination of superb time-domain astrometry and photometry will enable us to derive masses and distances to these dark lenses uniquely, and to describe the demographics of the unseen component of the Milky Way.

In this paper we describe the routine photometric calibration of data taken with the VIRCAM instrument on the ESO VISTA telescope. The broadband ZYJHKs data are directly calibrated from 2MASS point sources visible in every VISTA image. We present the empirical transformations between the 2MASS and VISTA, and WFCAM and VISTA, photometric systems for regions of low reddening. We investigate the long-term performance of VISTA+VIRCAM. An investigation of the dependence of the photometric calibration on interstellar reddening leads to these conclusions: (1) For all broadband filters, a linear colour-dependent correction compensates the gross effects of reddening where $E(B-V), 22 pages, 22 figures. A surprisingly large fraction (70%) of hot, carbon dominated atmosphere (DQ) white dwarfs are magnetic and/or photometrically variable on short timescales up to ~1000 s. However, here we show that the hot DQ magnetic white dwarf SDSS J000555.90-100213.5 is photometrically variable by 11% on a longer timescale, with a period of 2.110 +/- 0.045 days. We report on the first ultracool dwarf discoveries from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey Early Data Release (LAS EDR), in particular the discovery of T dwarfs which are fainter and more distant than those found using the 2MASS and SDSS surveys. We aim to show that our methodologies for searching the ~27 sq degs of the LAS EDR are successful for finding both L and T dwarfs $via$ cross-correlation with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR4 release. While the area searched so far is small, the numbers of objects found shows great promise for near-future releases of the LAS and great potential for finding large numbers of such dwarfs. Ultracool dwarfs are selected by combinations of their YJH(K) UKIDSS colours and SDSS DR4 z-J and i-z colours, or, lower limits on these red optical/infrared colours in the case of DR4 dropouts. After passing visual inspection tests, candidates have been followed up by methane imaging and spectroscopy at 4m and 8m-class facilities. Our main result is the discovery following CH4 imaging and spectroscopy of a T4.5 dwarf, ULASJ 1452+0655, lying ~80pc distant. A further T dwarf candidate, ULASJ 1301+0023, has very similar CH4 colours but has not yet been confirmed spectroscopically. We also report on the identification of a brighter L0 dwarf, and on the selection of a list of LAS objects designed to probe for T-like dwarfs to the survey J-band limit. Our findings indicate that the combination of the UKIDSS LAS and SDSS surveys provide an excellent tool for identifying L and T dwarfs down to much fainter limits than previously possible. We present eight new T4.5-T7.5 dwarfs identified in the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS) Data Release 1 (DR1). In addition we have recovered the T4.5 dwarf SDSS J020742.91+000056.2 and the T8.5 dwarf ULAS J003402.77-005206.7. Photometric candidates were picked up in two-colour diagrams over 190 square degrees (DR1) and selected in at least two filters. All candidates exhibit near-infrared spectra with strong methane and water absorption bands characteristic of T dwarfs and the derived spectral types follow the unified scheme of Burgasser et al. (2006). We have found 6 new T4.5-T5.5 dwarfs, one T7 dwarf, one T7.5 dwarf, and recovered a T4.5 dwarf and a T8.5 dwarf. We provide distance estimates which lie in the 15-85 pc range; the T7.5 and T8.5 dwarfs are probably within 25 pc of the Sun. International audience; The Monitor project is a large scale photometric monitoring survey of ten star forming regions and open clusters aged between 1 and 200 Myr using wide-field optical cameras on 2-4 m telescopes worldwide. The primary goal of the project is to search for close-in planets and brown dwarfs at young ages through the detection of transit events. Such detections would provide unprecedented constraints on planet formation and migration time-scales, as well as on evolutionary models of planets and brown dwarfs in an age range where such constraints are very scarce. We report the discovery of 16 detached M-dwarf eclipsing binaries with J

We have performed photometric observations of nearly 7 million stars with 8 < V < 15 with the SuperWASP-North instrument from La Palma between 2004 May-September. Fields in the RA range 17-18hr, yielding over 185,000 stars with sufficient quality data, have been searched for transits using a modified box least-squares (BLS) algorithm. We find a total of 58 initial transiting candidates which have high S/N in the BLS, show multiple transit-like dips and have passed visual inspection. Analysis of the blending and inferred planetary radii for these candidates leaves a total of 7 transiting planet candidates which pass all the tests plus 4 which pass the majority. We discuss the derived parameters for these candidates and their properties and comment on the implications for future transit searches., Comment: 17 pages, 24 figures, accepted by MNRAS

The UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) is a set of five large near-infrared surveys, covering a complementary range of areas, depths, and Galactic latitudes. The UKIDSS Second Data Release (DR2) includes the First Data Release (DR1), with minor improvements, plus new data for the LAS, GPS, GCS, and DXS, from observations made over 2006 May through July (when the UDS was unobservable). DR2 was staged in two parts. The first part excluded the GPS, and took place on 2007 March 1. The GPS was released on 2007 April 12. DR2 includes 282 sq. degs of multicolour data to (Vega) K=18, complete in the full YJHK set for the LAS, 57 sq. degs in the ZYJHK set for the GCS, and 236 sq. degs in the JHK set for the GPS. DR2 includes nearly 7 sq. degs of deep JK data (DXS, UDS) to an average depth K=21. In addition the release includes a comparable quantity of data where coverage of the filter set for any survey is incomplete. We document changes that have occurred since DR1 to the pipeline, calibration, and archive procedures. The two most noteworthy changes are presentation of the data in a single database (compared to two previously), and provision of additional error flags for detected sources, flagging potentially spurious artifacts, corrupted data and suspected cross-talk sources. We summarise the contents of each of the surveys in terms of filters, areas, and depths.

Contains fulltext : 35239.pdf ( ) (Open Access) We present the results of a deep wide-field near-infrared survey of 12 deg2 of the Pleiades conducted as part of the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Galactic Cluster Survey (GCS). We have extracted over 340 high-probability proper motion (PM) members down to 0.03 Msolar using a combination of UKIDSS photometry and PM measurements obtained by cross-correlating the GCS with data from the Two Micron All Sky Survey, the Isaac Newton Telescope and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Additionally, we have unearthed 73 new candidate brown dwarf (BD) members on the basis of five-band UKIDSS photometry alone. We have identified 23 substellar multiple system candidates out of 63 candidate BDs from the (Y - K, Y) and (J - K, J) colour-magnitude diagrams, yielding a binary frequency of 28-44 per cent in the 0.075-0.030 Msolar mass range. Our estimate is three times larger than the binary fractions reported from high-resolution imaging surveys of field ultracool dwarfs and Pleiades BDs. However, it is marginally consistent with our earlier `peculiar' photometric binary fraction of 50 +/- 10 per cent presented by Pinfield et al., in good agreement with the 32-45 per cent binary fraction derived from the recent Monte Carlo simulations of Maxted & Jeffries and compatible with the 26 +/- 10 per cent frequency recently estimated by Basri & Reiners. A tentative estimate of the mass ratios from photometry alone seems to support the hypothesis that binary BDs tend to reside in near equal-mass ratio systems. In addition, the recovery of four Pleiades members targeted by high-resolution imaging surveys for multiplicity studies suggests that half of the binary candidates may have separations below the resolution limit of the Hubble Space Telescope or current adaptive optics facilities at the distance of the Pleiades (a ~7 au). Finally, we have derived luminosity and mass functions from the sample of photometric candidates with membership probabilities. The mass function is well modelled by a lognormal peaking at 0.24Msolar and is in agreement with previous studies in the Pleiades. The GSC-II white dwarf survey was designed to identify faint and high proper motion objects, which we used to define a new and independent sample of cool white dwarfs. With this survey we aim to derive new constraints on the halo white dwarf space density. Also, these data can provide information on the age of thick disk and halo through the analysis of the luminosity function. On the basis of astrometric and photometric parameters, we selected candidates with mu > 0.28 as/yr and R_F > 16 in an area of 1150 square degrees. Then, we separated white dwarfs from late type dwarfs and subdwarfs by means of the reduced proper motion diagram. Finally, spectroscopic follow-up observations were carried out to confirm the white dwarf nature of the selected candidates. We found 41 white dwarfs of which 24 are new discoveries. We present the optical identification of mid-IR and radio sources detected in the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) areas N1 and N2. Using the r' band optical data from the Wide Field Survey we apply a likelihood ratio method to search for the counterparts of the 1056 and 691 sources detected at 15 micron and 1.4 GHz respectively, down to flux limits of S_{15}=0.5 mJy and S_{1.4 GHz}=0.135 mJy. We find that ~92% of the 15 micron ELAIS sources have an optical counterpart down to the magnitude limit of the optical data, r'=24. All mid-IR sources with fluxes S_{15} >= 3 mJy have an optical counterpart. The magnitude distribution of the sources shows a well defined peak at relatively bright magnitudes r'~18. About 20% of the identified sources show a point-like morphology; its magnitude distribution has a peak at fainter magnitudes than those of galaxies. The mid-IR-to-optical and radio-to-optical flux diagrams are presented and discussed in terms of actual galaxy models. Objects with mid-IR-to-optical fluxes larger than 1000 are found that can only be explained as highly obscured star forming galaxies or AGNs. Blank fields being 8% of the 15 micron sample have even larger ratios suggesting that they may be associated with higher redshift and higher obscured objects.

A new model atmosphere analysis for the peculiar DQ white dwarf discovered by Carollo et al. (2002) is presented. The effective temperature and carbon abundance have been estimated by fitting both the photometric data (UBJ,VRF,IN,JHK) and a low resolution spectrum (3500, Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters

We present both synthetic and observed I - Z colours for a sample of spectroscopically classified M and L dwarfs drawn primarily from recent wide-field infrared surveys. Our synthetic photometry does not reproduce the strong decrease in the I Harris - Z RGO natural colour beyond M9 to a minimum around L2.5 reported by Steele & Howells. However, it does support the result that the I Harris - Z RGO colour does not increase with spectral type between L0–L2.5. Instead, the I Harris - Z RGO , i WFC - Z WFC , i SDSS - z SDSS and I C - Z RGO colours are shown to remain more or less constant before increasing once again for types later than L3–L4. These results, which are supported by both previously published observations and new photometry obtained with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) and the Wide Field Camera (WFC), have implications for the interpretation of the recently publicly released Wide Field Survey Programme data covering the Pleiades cluster and surveys for late-type M and L dwarfs in general.

ABSTRA C T We present follow-up infrared photometry for a sample of low-mass and very low-mass stars in the Praesepe open cluster. Our sample is selected from two sources: (i) 90 stars selected from the Hambly et al. photometric and proper-motion survey of Praesepe; (ii) 17 stars selected from the CCD imaging survey presented by Pinfield et al. We investigate cluster membership using infrared colour‐magnitude and colour‐colour diagrams. We find 81 likely and two possible members in the Hambly et al. sample, in line with predictions. Contamination in the Pinfield et al. sample is higher, and we find nine probable cluster members. We investigate the non-grey models of Baraffe et al., which are found to be in good agreement with the data. Multiplicity in Praesepe is also examined, and we find the multiple star fraction to be 0.51 from analysis of the I; I 2 K diagram. We investigate individual object masses, and find that the faintest candidate cluster members have masses close to the substellar limit.

We present a parallax measurement for the very cool degenerate WD 0346+246, the serendipitous discovery of which was reported by Hambly et al. We find an absolute parallax of 36±5 mas, yielding a distance estimate of 28±4 pc. The resulting absolute visual magnitude of the object is MV=16.8±0.3, making it the second-lowest luminosity white dwarf currently known. We use the distance estimate and measured proper motion to show that the object has kinematics consistent with membership of the Galactic halo. WD 0346+246 is therefore by far the coolest and least luminous of only a handful of plausible halo white dwarf candidates. As such, the object has relevance to the ongoing debate concerning the results of microlensing experiments and the nature of any baryonic dark matter component to the Galactic halo residing in stellar remnants.

ABSTRA C T We present a new sample of brown dwarf (BD) candidates from a survey covering 68 · 68 centred on the Pleiades. The survey was constructed using I- and R-band photographic plates, from the United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope, measured using the new high-precision microdensitometer SuperCOSMOS at the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh. Objects as faint as or up to ,0:5 mag fainter than the Pleiades lithium boundary are selected on the basis of having extremely red photographic colours and proper motions consistent with cluster membership; follow-up near-infrared and infrared photoelectric photometry yields nine candidate BD Pleiads. Coordinates, magnitudes and finders are presented for these objects. We use these data and information on higher mass stars to construct a mass function having an increasingly shallow gradient towards and across the stellar/substellar boundary; a few of the candidates are found at distances of more than 28 from the nominal cluster centre. We discuss the implications of these results for future surveys.

Hubble Space Telescope Near-Infrared Camera and Multiobject Spectrometer (NICMOS) observations of six brown dwarf candidates in the Pleiades open cluster are presented. One of them, namely CFHT-Pl-18, is clearly resolved as a binary with an angular separation of 033. The very low density of contaminating background stars in our images and the photometry of the components support that this system is a physical binary rather than a chance projection. All of the available photometric and spectroscopic data indicate that the CFHT-Pl-18 system is likely a member of the Pleiades cluster, but a final confirmation will have to wait until lithium can be detected. Assuming cluster membership, we compare our NICMOS photometry with evolutionary models and find that the inclusion of the effects of dust grains is necessary for fitting the data. We estimate that the masses of the components are about 0.045 and 0.035 M☉. The binary system has a projected separation of 42 AU (for a distance of 125 pc) that is common among stellar binaries.

A membership catalogue for the Pleiades is divided into four mass bins, and a tidally truncated King profile is fitted to each bin with good agreement with the data. The tidal radius of the cluster is found to be 13.1 pc, and the total mass of the cluster down to the stellar limit is calculated to be 735 M. The spread of stars in each bin, as well as the relaxation and crossing times, shows the Pleiades to be an approximately relaxed cluster with equilibrium between the density and velocity distributions. The cluster kinetic energy and binding energy are consistent with the virial theorem, indicating no large unseen population of brown dwarfs. However, the 1 σ errors in the cluster parameters provide an upper limit to the mass of any brown dwarf population of 131 M, which would show up in deep CCD surveys as ≤ 5.5 brown dwarfs per 10 × 10 arcminute field in the cluster centre.

The WASP project and infrastructure supporting the Super WASP Facility are described. As the instrument, reduction pipeline and archive system are now fully operative we expect the system to have a major impact in the discovery of bright exo-planet candidates as well in more general variable star projects.

Asteroseismology has the capability of precisely determining stellar properties which would otherwise be inaccessible, such as radii, masses and thus ages of stars. When coupling this information with classical determinations of stellar parameters, such as metallicities, effective temperatures and angular diameters, powerful new diagnostics for Galactic studies can be obtained. The ongoing Stroemgren survey for Asteroseismology and Galactic Archaeology (SAGA) has the goal of transforming the Kepler field into a new benchmark for Galactic studies, similarly to the solar neighborhood. Here we present first results from a stripe centred at Galactic longitude 74deg and covering latitude from about 8 to 20deg, which includes almost 1000 K-giants with seismic information and the benchmark open cluster NGC 6819. We describe the coupling of classical and seismic parameters, the accuracy as well as the caveats of the derived effective temperatures, metallicities, distances, surface gravities, masses, and radii. Confidence in the achieved precision is corroborated by the detection of the first and secondary clump in a population of field stars with a ratio of 2 to 1, and by the negligible scatter in the seismic distances among NGC 6819 member stars. An assessment of the reliability of stellar parameters in the Kepler Input Catalogue is also performed, and the impact of our results for population studies in the Milky Way is discussed, along with the importance of an all-sky Stroemgren survey., ApJ, accepted. We present a deep R-, 1and Z-band photometric survey of the open cluster Praesepe. 26 new photometric candidates have been found with I> 17.8, extending Praesepe's main sequence down to 1=21.5. 19 of the new members are brown dwarf candidates, and two could be binary brown dwarfs. Praesepe's mass function is derived, and found to be rising into the brown dwarf range with (X ~ 1.5.

We report the serendipitous discovery of a new, very low luminosity, cool degenerate in the region of Taurus. The object was found as a very high proper-motion star (μ = 13 yr-1) on seven I-band UK Schmidt Telescope plates, dating from 1987 to 1994, via digitized scans from the new, fast, high-precision microdensitometer SuperCOSMOS. Photometry and spectrophotometry indicate that the object has a temperature comparable to those of the handful of coolest white dwarfs currently known (T~3900 K). We discuss the relevance of this discovery to current research concerning Galactic structure and evolution.

Observations at Ha and X-rays for a sample of Pleiades VLM stars have been used to investigate the nature of chromospheric and coronal activity for the lowest luminosity stars. We find strong evidence for a turnover in chromospheric activity atM I ~ 8 – 9 (M ~ 0.4 – 0.3M⊙), consistent with the point at which stars are expected to become fully convective. The X-ray data, however, show no change at this boundary, indicating that coronal activity is maintained down to M ~ 0.1M⊙.

The ROSAT EUV all-sky survey was conducted with the UK Wide Field Camera over the six month period July 1990 to January 1991, in two ‘colours’ using broadband filters to define wavebands centred at about 100 and 140 A. We present EUV luminosity functions for nearby (distance ≲ 25 pc) late type (F-M) stars.

A programme of long-duration (∼20-40 ks), ROSAT PSPC pointed observations of the Hyades open star cluster has been conducted. So far, 11 fields have been analysed, yielding, for selected regions (total area ∼3.5 deg 2 ), a sensitivity improvement over the PSPC all-sky survey of more than a factor of 5, and providing high-quality spectra and time series for the brighter sources. Approximately 75 per cent of the Hyads within the fields are detected in X-rays, including 23 out of 32 dM stars and 13 out of 17 dK stars; this allows us to construct their X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) down to L X ∼5×10 27 erg s −1 (0.1-2.4 keV). All four dMs with M V >13 in our sample have been detected

We present new data on the extreme-ultraviolet source RE1016−05, discovered in the ROSAT Wide Field Camera All-Sky Survey. Spectroscopy of possible optical counterparts reveals an object with a composite DA white dwarf and M dwarf spectrum, only 19 arcsec distant from the Wide Field Camera (WFC) source coordinates. The spectra exhibit hydrogen Balmer line emission in the cores of wide Balmer absorption lines arising from the white dwarf, together with weaker He I line emission. There is evidence for variability in the optical emission-line flux on time-scales of hours, but no variation in EUV output is detected. We classify the cool companion in the range dM1-dM3, and determine the white dwarf temperature to be in the range 37 000-47 000 K

We report the discovery, from the ROSAT EUV and X-ray all-sky surveys, and from IUE spectra, of a white dwarf (WD) companion to HD 33959C (= ADS 3824C, F4V, m V = 7.95). RE 0515+324 is among the 10 brightest EUV sources in the sky in the 100-200 A band. It is also a strong soft X-ray source. IUE observations of candidate objects have revealed a previously uncatalogued hot DA WD, visually unresolved from HD 33959C, making the pair one of three or four suggested Sirius-like systems. The estimated EUV luminosity is of the order of 400 times greater than that of Sirius B, implying that the WD is much hotter (cf. T eff = 24 000 K for Sirius B) and probably hydrogen-rich

A catalogue of 384 relatively bright sources detected in the first-ever all-sky survey in the extreme ultraviolet, carried out by the UK Wide Field Camera (WFC) on ROSAT has recently been published. We have made a detailed study of the differential source counts of the two classes of source that dominate the WFC bright source catalogue, namely white dwarf stars and active late-type stars. The source counts are flatter than the uniform Euclidean form, with the counts of white dwarf stars, in particular, giving evidence of very strong absorption. We find that the global source counts can be best explained in terms of a bubble model in which a local low-density region is bounded by higher density gas

The first all-sky survey for cosmic sources of extreme-ultraviolet radiation has been carried out with the UK Wide Field Camera on ROSAT. A first reduction of the survey data has yielded a catalogue of 383 relatively bright EUV sources, forming the WFC Bright Source Catalogue. This represents a 30-fold increase in the number of astrophysical objects detected in the ∼ 60-200 eV energy band and covers a flux range, in each of the two survey bands, of more than 2000. A search of the (typically ∼ 1-arcmin) error circles of the WFC sources, using a variety of catalogues and the SIMBAD data base, has identified probable optical counterparts of ∼73 per cent, including many active stars, white dwarf stars and a variety of other galactic and extragalactic objects

We announce the discovery of a new low-mass, pre-main sequence eclipsing binary, MML 53. Previous observations of MML 53 found it to be a pre-main sequence spectroscopic multiple associated with the 15-22 Myr Upper Centaurus Lupus cluster. We identify the object as an eclipsing binary for the first time through the analysis of multiple seasons of time series photometry from the SuperWASP transiting planet survey. Re-analysis of a single archive spectrum shows MML 53 to be a spatially unresolved triple system of young stars which all exhibit significant lithium absorption. Two of the components comprise an eclipsing binary with period, P = 2.097891(6) +- 0.000005 and mass ratio, q~0.8. Here, we present the analysis of the discovery data., Accepted to A&A

We have used data from the ROSAT Wide Field Camera (WFC) all sky survey to measure the EUV surface fluxes in the energy range 0.05–0.3 keV, (40–250A) of a number of magnetically active late-type stars. The preliminary results of this analysis are presented and correlations with coronal and transition region activity diagnostics are examined. We point out some difficulties in converting the instrumental count rate into an accurate flux and highlight the requirement for detailed spectral analysis of a range of late-type stars which can be used as template spectra for flux conversions.

The Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) is a new ESO telescope that will be commissioned in late 2007. The telescope has been specifically designed for survey work in both the visible and near infrared, but to start with will only have an infrared camera (VIRCAM). The focal plane of VIRCAM will consist of 16 2k by 2k non-buttable detectors with a pawprint of 0.6 square degrees. With an expected nightly data rate of 200–500 Gb, automated pipeline processing and data management requirements are paramount.

We report the discovery of WASP-3b, the third transiting exoplanet to be discovered by the WASP and SOPHIE collaboration. WASP-3b transits its host star USNO-B1.0 1256-0285133 every 1.846834+-0.000002 days. Our high precision radial-velocity measurements present a variation with amplitude characteristic of a planetary-mass companion and in-phase with the light-curve. Adaptive optics imaging shows no evidence for nearby stellar companions, and line-bisector analysis excludes faint, unresolved binarity and stellar activity as the cause of the radial-velocity variations. We make a preliminary spectroscopic analysis of the host star finding it to have Teff = 6400+-100 K and log g = 4.25+-0.05 which suggests it is most likely an unevolved main sequence star of spectral type F7-8V. Our simultaneous modelling of the transit photometry and reflex motion of the host leads us to derive a mass of 1.76 +0.08 -0.14 M_J and radius 1.31 +0.07-0.14 R_J for WASP-3b. The proximity and relative temperature of the host star suggests that WASP-3b is one of the hottest exoplanets known, and thus has the potential to place stringent constraints on exoplanet atmospheric models., 10 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, submitted for publication in MNRAS

The Wide Angle Search for Planets (WASP) photometrically surveys a large number of nearby stars to uncover candidate extrasolar planet systems by virtue of smallamplitude lightcurve dips on a . 5-day timescale typical of the \Hot-Jupiters." Observations with the SuperWASP-North instrument between April and September 2004 produced a rich photometric dataset of some 1.3£10 9 datapoints from 6.7 million stars. Our custom-built data acquisition and processing system produces » 0:02 mag photometric precision at V =13. We present the transit-candidates in the 03h-06h RA range. Of 141,895 lightcurves with su‐cient sampling to provide adequate coverage, 2688 show statistically significant transit-like periodicities. Of these, 44 pass visual inspection of the lightcurve, of which 24 are removed through a set of cuts on the statistical signiflcance of artefacts. All but 4 of the remaining 20 objects are removed when prior information at higher spatial-resolution from existing catalogues is taken into account. Of the four candidates remaining, one is considered a good candidate for follow-up observations with three further second-priority targets. We provide detailed information on these candidates, as well as a selection of the false-positives and astrophysical false-alarms that were eliminated, and discuss brie∞y the impact of sampling on our results.

The SuperWASP-I (Wide Angle Search for Planets-I) instrument observed 6.7 million stars between 8 and 15mag from La Palma during the 2004 May-September season. Our transit-hunting algorithm selected 11626 objects from the 184442 stars within the RA (right ascension) range 18-21h. We describe our thorough selection procedure whereby catalogue information is exploited along with careful study of the SuperWASP data to filter out, as far as possible, transit mimics. We have identified 35 candidates which we recommend for follow-up observations.

Microlensing experiments have suggested that a significant part of the dark halo of the Milky Way could be composed of matter in form of massive compact halo objects (MACHOs). Cool ancient white dwarfs (WDs) are the natural candidates. Here we present a new survey of halo WDs and evaluate the local space density using a new method for the membership selection based on the kinematic properties of the stars. A comparison to a revaluation of the Oppenheimer et al. (2001) result is also provided. The local space density estimated from the two independent samples is about ∼ 10 5M⊙pc 3 and is consistent with the canonical local mass density of the halo WDs.

We combine deep, wide-field near-IR and optical imaging to demonstrate a reddening-independent quasar selection technique based on identifying outliers in the (g-z) / (z-H) colour diagram. In three fields covering a total of ~0.7 deg^2 to a depth of m_H~18, we identified 68 quasar candidates. Follow-up spectroscopy for 32 objects from this candidate list confirmed 22 quasars (0.86 65% success rate), a high surface density of candidates, and is relatively independent of reddening. We discuss the implications for star/galaxy separation for IR based surveys for quasars. We present intermediate and low resolution optical spectroscopy (650-915 nm) of seven faint, very red objects (20 > I >= 17.8, I-Z >= 0.5) discovered in a CCD-based IZ survey covering an area of 1 sq. deg in the central region of the Pleiades open cluster. The observed spectra show that these objects are very cool dwarfs, having spectral types in the range M6-M9. Five out of the seven objects can be considered as Pleiades members on the basis of their radial velocities, Halpha emission and other gravity sensitive atomic features like the NaI doublet at 818.3 and 819.5 nm. According to current evolutionary models the masses of these new objects range from roughly 80 MJup for the hottest in the sample down to 45 MJup for Roque 4, the coolest and faintest confirmed member. These observations prove that the cloud fragmentation process extends well into the brown dwarf realm, suggesting a rise in the initial mass function below the substellar limit., 16 pages, 2 figures, aasms4 macro in LateX. 1997 ApJ Letters, accepted

We aim at constraining the angular momentum evolution of low mass stars by measuring their rotation rates when they begin to evolve freely towards the ZAMS, i.e. after the disk accretion phase has stopped. We conducted a multi-site photometric monitoring of the young open cluster h Persei that has an age of ~13 Myr. The observations were done in the I-band using 4 different telescopes and the variability study is sensitive to periods from less than 0.2 day to 20 days. Rotation periods are derived for 586 candidate cluster members over the mass range 0.410 Myr). The results are consistent with models that assume significant core-envelope decoupling during the angular momentum evolution to the ZAMS., 39 pages, 19 figures, light curves in appendix, 1 long table
