Interventions to augment the mucosal thickness around dental implants are indicated to optimize esthetics and maintain peri-implant health. However, there is a lack of clinical data on the long-term performance of soft tissue substitutes, such as volume-stable collagen matrix (VCMX), compared to autogenous grafts, such as subepithelial connective tissue grafts (SCTGs). This randomized controlled trial aimed to assess 5-year data on clinical and radiographic outcomes at implant sites previously augmented with VCMX or SCTG.Twenty patients were randomly assigned for soft tissue augmentation with VCMX or SCTG at single implant sites. Following abutment connection, final restorations were inserted (baseline; BL) and patients were reexamined up to 5 years (FU-5). Measurements included clinical data, marginal bone levels, mucosal thickness, and ridge contour changes. Nonparametric tests and estimates were applied for the statistical analysis.The median buccal mucosal thickness increased by 0.3 mm (Q1: -0.8; Q3: 1.0) in the VCMX group (P = 0.656) and 0.3 mm (Q1: 0.0; Q3: 1.0) in the SCTG group (P = 0.188) between BL and FU-5 (intergroup P = 0.752), while the ridge contour decreased by a median of -0.3 mm (-0.9; -0.1) (P = 0.078) for VCMX and -0.3 mm (-0.4; -0.2) (P = 0.039) for SCTG (intergroup P = 0.817). Peri-implant health was maintained in both groups with stable clinical and radiographic outcomes and without significant differences between the treatments.Despite the limited power and considerable dropout rate in the present study, soft tissue augmentation at implant sites with either VCMX or SCTG resulted in similar stable peri-implant tissues, favorable esthetics, and clinically negligible contour changes at 5 years post loading.

The aim of this study was to compare patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) of soft tissue substitutes versus autogenous grafts for soft tissue augmentation procedures at implant sites. Comprehensive and systematic literature searches were performed until December 2021. A focused question was formulated based on the Population, Intervention, Comparison and Outcome criteria (PICO): In patients with dental implants undergoing soft tissue augmentation (P), do soft tissue substitutes (I) compared to autogenous soft tissue graft (SCTG [subepithelial connective tissue graft]) (C) limit the post-operative morbidity and other patient reported-outcomes measures (O). Randomized controlled clinical trials, prospective-, retrospective- and case-series studies were included. Meta-analyses were performed whenever possible and the results were expressed as weighted mean differences (WMD). A total of 29 clinical studies were included. For mucosal thickness gain, soft tissue substitutes significantly reduced the pain perception compared to SCTG (n = 4; WMD = 14.91 Visual Analog Scale [VAS] units; 95% confidence interval [CI] 6.42-23.40; P .0006) based on a 0-100 VAS scale. Based on a 0-10 VAS scale, a borderline significance of pain reduction was found when soft tissue substitutes were applied (n = 4; WMD = 1.62 VAS units; 95% CI 0.01-3.23; P = .05). For keratinized tissue gain, soft tissue substitutes significantly reduced the pain perception after keratinized tissue augmentation compared to SCTG based on a 0-100 VAS scale (n = 2; WMD = 21.43 VAS units; 95% CI 12.58-30.28; P .0001). Based on the 0-10 VAS scale, soft tissue substitutes significantly reduced the pain as compared to SCTG (n = 4; WMD = 1.65 VAS units; 95% CI 0.66-2.64; P = .001). Regarding pain medication, soft tissue substitutes required less painkillers (n = 6; WMD = 1.56 tablets; 95% CI 1.22-1.91; P .00001) after soft tissue augmentation. The surgery time was significantly reduced when soft tissue substitutes were used (n = 5; WMD = 10.9 minutes; 95% CI 4.60-17.19; P .00001). There were no significant differences in satisfaction, aesthetics, and quality of life (OHIP-14) between soft tissue substitutes and autogenous grafts following soft tissue augmentation at implants sites. Soft tissue substitutes, compared to autogenous grafts, significantly improve PROMs following soft tissue augmentation at implant sites. Soft tissue substitutes can reduce pain perception, amounts of painkillers and surgery time while achieving similar levels of patient´s satisfaction as autogenous grafts without impairing the clinical outcomes. The current evidence indicates that they constitute a valid and reliable alternative to minimize the invasiveness in soft tissue augmentation procedures at implant sites.

The aim of the study was to identify and report outcome measures and methods of assessment on soft-tissue augmentation interventions in the context of dental implant therapy reported in clinical studies published in the last 10 years.The protocol of this PRISMA 2020-compliant systematic review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42021252214). A literature search was conducted to identify articles that met the pre-established eligibility criteria. Data of interest, with an emphasis on outcome measures, were extracted. For each outcome, specific methods and timing of assessment were described in detail. Following a critical qualitative analysis of the data, outcome measures were categorized. Primary outcomes were identified and the frequency of reporting in the selected articles was calculated. Additionally, risk of bias assessments were performed for individual articles and primary outcomes.Ninety-two articles, of which 39 reported randomized controlled trials (RCTs), 20 reported non-RCTs, and 33 reported case series studies, were selected. Outcome measures were categorized into either investigator-evaluated outcome measures (i.e., clinical, digital imaging, esthetic, histologic, biomarker, and safety) or patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). Clinical outcomes were the most frequently reported type of outcome. Considering all categories, the most frequently reported primary outcomes were facial mucosa thickness assessed with clinical methods (22.83%), facial keratinized mucosa width assessed with clinical methods (19.57%), facial mucosal margin position/recession assessed with clinical methods (18.48%), facial mucosa thickness assessed with digital imaging methods (11.96%), facial soft-tissue volume assessed with digital imaging methods (9.78%), and supracrestal tissue height assessed with clinical methods (9.78%). No distinguishable patterns of association between specific types or quality (level of bias) of clinical studies and the choice of primary outcomes were observed.Clinical research on peri-implant soft-tissue augmentation has progressively increased in the last 10 years. Although clinical outcome measures were the most frequently reported outcomes in the selected literature, trends in the field are indicative of a shift from traditional clinical assessment methods to the use of digital technologies. PROMs were generally underreported but should be considered an integral methodological component in future clinical studies.

To identify the factors associated with buccal peri-implant soft tissue dehiscences (BSTDs) and their frequency of occurrence.Randomized controlled trials, controlled clinical trials, cohort studies, and case series assessing the frequency of occurrence of BSTD were included. BSTD was defined as an apical migration of the peri-implant soft tissues of ≥1 mm from the baseline examination (final restoration) or in comparison with the adjacent or contralateral natural tooth. Frequency distributions of BSTD related to the presence or absence of any surgical, prosthetic, or anatomic factor that may have contributed to the development of BSTD were recorded. Random-effects meta-analyses using odds ratios (OR) were performed to investigate the association of certain factors with the development of BSTD.Twenty-four articles were finally included belonging to 22 clinical investigations. Patients at higher risk of developing BSTD were associated with thin biotype (OR = 2.85 [1.40, 5.8], n = 5, p = .003) and with buccally placed implants (OR = 14.37 [4.58, 45.14], n = 3, p ≤ .001). Patients without connective tissue grafting (CTG) had greater odds of developing BSTD (OR = 9.00 [3.11, 26.02], n = 5, p ≤ .001), while buccal bone plate thickness of1 mm and immediately placed implants were not associated with greater BSTD (OR = 1.29 [0.35, 4.77], n = 2, p = .704 and OR = 1.56 [0.46, 5.26], n = 4, p = .477, respectively). The frequency of occurrence of BSTD varied across the included studies with a range from 0% to 61%.Thin tissue biotype and buccally placed implants were associated with BSTD, whereas CTG seemed to have a protective effect. Thin buccal plates and immediately placed implants did not demonstrate a higher risk of BSTD.

In systematically healthy patients with an implant-supported fixed restoration (P), what is the influence of thin (E) as compared to thick (C) peri-implant soft tissues on aesthetic outcomes (O)?Following an a priori protocol, a literature search of six databases was conducted up to August 2020 to identify prospective/retrospective clinical studies on healthy patients with an implant-supported fixed reconstruction. Measurement of the buccal soft tissue thickness and an aesthetic outcome was a prerequisite, and sites presenting with a buccal soft tissue thickness of2 mm or shimmering of a periodontal probe were categorized as a thin phenotype. After study selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment, random-effects meta-analysis of Mean Differences (MD) or Odds Ratios (OR) with their corresponding 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) were conducted, followed by sensitivity analyses and assessment of the quality of evidence.Thirty-four unique studies reporting on 1508 patients with 1606 sites were included (9 randomized controlled trials, one controlled trial, 10 prospective cohort studies, 8 cross-sectional studies, and 6 retrospective cohort studies). The mean difference of the pink aesthetic score (PES) after the follow-up was not significantly different between thin (2.0 mm) or thick soft tissues (≥2.0 mm) or phenotypes (12 studies; MD = 0.15; [95% CI = -0.24, 0.53]; p = .46). PES changes during the follow-up, however, were significantly in favour of thick soft tissues (≥2.0 mm) or phenotypes (p = .05). An increased mean mucosal thickness was associated with an increased papilla index (5 studies; MD = 0.5; [95% CI = 0.1, 0.3]; p = .002) and an increase in papilla presence (5 studies; OR = 1.6; [95% CI = 1.0, 2.3]; p = .03). Thin soft tissues were associated with more recession, -0.62 mm (4 studies; [95% CI = -1.06, -0.18]; p = .006). Patient-reported outcome measures (patient satisfaction) were in favour of thick soft tissues -2.33 (6 studies; [95% CI = -4.70, 0.04]; p = .05). However, the quality of evidence was very low in all instances due to the inclusion of non-randomized studies, high risk of bias and residual confounding.Within the limitations of the present study (weak study designs and various soft tissue measurements or time-points), it can be concluded that increased soft tissue thickness at implant sites was associated with more favourable aesthetic outcomes.

To compare screw-retained and cemented all-ceramic implant-supported single crowns regarding biological and technical outcomes over a 5-year observation period.In 44 patients, 44 two-piece dental implants were placed in single-tooth gaps in the esthetic zone. Patients randomly received a screw-retained (SR) or cemented (CR) all-ceramic single crown and were then re-examined annually up to 5 years. Outcome measures included: clinical, biological, technical, and radiographic parameters. Data were statistically analyzed with Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney, Wilcoxon, and Fisher's exact tests.During the observation period, three patients (6.8%) were loss to follow-up. Eight restorations (18.2%, CI (8.2%, 32.7%)) were lost due to technical (6 patients, 13.6% (CI (5.2%, 27.4%)), 2 CR and 4 SR group, intergroup p = .673; implants still present) or biological complications (2 patients, 4.5% (CI (0.6%, 16.5%)), only CR group, intergroup p = .201, both implants lost). This resulted in a survival rate of 81.2% (CI (65.9%, 90.1%)) on the restorative level (18 SR; 15 CR, 3 lost to follow-up). At the 5-year follow-up, the median marginal bone levels were located slightly apical relative to the implant shoulder with 0.4 mm (0.5; 0.3) (SR) and 0.4 mm (0.8; 0.3) (CR) (intergroup p = .582). Cemented restorations demonstrated a significantly higher biological complication rate (36.8%, SR: 0.0%; intergroup p = .0022), as well as a significantly higher overall complication rate (68.4%, SR: 22.7%, intergroup p = .0049). All other outcomes did not differ significantly between the two groups (p .05).All-ceramic single-tooth restorations on two-piece dental implants resulted in a relatively low survival rate. Cemented restorations were associated with a higher biological and overall complication rate than screw-retained restorations.

To compare cemented and screw-retained one-piece zirconia-based restorations in terms of clinical, radiographic, and technical outcomes 5 years after insertion.Thirty-four patients with single-tooth implants were randomly restored with either a cemented lithium disilicate crown on a one-piece customized zirconia abutment (CEM, 17 patients) or a screw-retained crown based on a directly veneered one-piece customized zirconia abutment (SCREW, 16 patients). All patients were recalled for a baseline examination (7-10 days after crown insertion) and then annually up to 5 years. The following outcomes were assessed: marginal bone level (changes), technical, and clinical (bleeding on probing, plaque control record, probing depth, and keratinized tissue) parameters. The Mann-Whitney U-test was used to assess differences between the two groups.At 5 years, 26 patients (13 in each group) were re-examined. The survival rates on the implant and restorative levels were 100% and 82.4% (equally for both groups), respectively. At 5 years, the median marginal bone level was located at -0.15 mm (IQR: -0.89 mm; 0.27 mm) (CEM) and -0.26 mm (IQR: -0.38 mm; 0.01 mm) (SCREW) below the implant shoulder (intergroup p = .9598). The median changes between baseline and the 5-year follow-up amounted to -0.23 mm (CEM; intragroup p = .0002) and -0.15 mm (SCREW; intragroup p = .1465) (intergroup p = .1690). The overall technical complication rate at 5 years was 15.4% (CEM) and 15.4% (SCREW) (intergroup p = 1.00). Clinical parameters remained stable over time (baseline to 5 years).At 5 years, screw-retained and cemented restorations rendered largely the same clinical, technical, and radiographic outcomes. Technical complications were frequent in both groups.

Objectives To analyze the influence of compression on tissue integration and degradation of soft tissue substitutes. Material and methods Six subcutaneous pouches in twenty-eight rats were prepared and boxes made of Al2O3 were implanted and used as carriers for soft tissue substitutes: a collagen matrix (MG), two volume-stable collagen matrices (FG/MGA), and a polycaprolactone scaffold(E). The volume-stable materials (FG/MGA/E) were further implanted with a twofold (2) and a fourfold (4) compression, created by the stacking of additional layers of the substitute materials. The samples were retrieved at 1, 2, and 12 weeks (10 groups, 3 time points, n = 5 per time point and group, overall, 150 samples). The area fraction of infiltrated fibroblasts and inflammatory cells was evaluated histologically. Due to within-subject comparisons, mixed models were conducted for the primary outcome. The level of significance was set at 5%. Results The area fraction of fibroblasts increased in all groups over time. At 12 weeks, the densely compressed materials FG4 (1.1%), MGA4 (1.7%), and MGA2 (2.5%) obtained lower values as compared to the other groups, ranging between 4.7 (E2) and 6.5% (MG). Statistically significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) were observed between groups FG4 vs MG/FG2/E/E4 as well as between MGA4 vs MG/FG2/E/E4 and E vs MGA2. Conclusions Higher levels of compression led to delayed tissue integration. The effect of different compression levels was more distinct when compared to the differences between the materials. Clinical relevance All biomaterials demonstrated tissue integration and a minimal concomitant inflammatory reaction. Clinically, it might be more favorable to obtain a sufficient flap release or to reduce the material size to improve the tissue integration processes.

The 5th generation new radio (5G NR) standards create both enormous challenges and potential to address the spatio-spectral-temporal agility of wireless transmission. In the framework of a research unit at TU Ilmenau, various concepts were studied, including both approaches toward integrated circuits and distributed receiver front-ends (FEs). We report here on the latter approach, aiming at the proof-of-principle of the constituting FEs suitable for later modular extension. A millimeter-wave agile multi-beam FE with an integrated 4 by 1 antenna array for 5G wireless communications was designed, manufactured, and verified by measurements. The polarization is continuously electronically adjustable and the directions of signal reception are steerable by setting digital phase shifters. On purpose, these functions were realized by analog circuits, and digital signal processing was not applied. The agile polarization is created inside the analog, real-time capable FE in a novel manner and any external circuitry is omitted. The microstrip patch antenna array integrated into this module necessitated elaborate measurements within the scope of FE characterization, as the analog circuit and antenna form a single entity and cannot be assessed separately. Link measurements with broadband signals were successfully performed and analyzed in detail to determine the error vector magnitude contributions of the FE.

OBJECTIVES To assess clinical and radiographic outcomes as well as the profilometric contour alterations of peri-implant hard and soft tissues around single implants treated with simultaneous guided bone regeneration (GBR) at 5 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-seven patients presenting with a single tooth gap in the esthetic zone received a two-piece implant. GBR was randomly performed using a resorbable (RES) or a non-resorbable membrane (N-RES) combined with a bone substitute material. Follow-up examinations were performed at baseline (BL = crown insertion), 1 year (FU-1), 3 years (FU-3), and at 5 years (FU-5) including clinical and radiographic parameters as well as profilometric changes. Statistics were performed by means of parametric and nonparametric tests. RESULTS At 5 years, 20 out of 27 patients (9 RES, 11 N-RES) were re-examined. Median values for probing depth changed insignificantly between BL and FU-5 in both groups. The demand for ever-increasing wireless data transmission rates and throughput area-densities, especially with regard to microcellular networks, internet access, back-hauling, inter-device transmission, and sensing applications, has spurred the exploration of new spectra in the millimeter-wave (30–300 GHz) and terahertz bands (0.1–10 THz), and the study of techniques for multi-Gigabit transmission based on very high-gain antennas [items 1) and 2) in the Appendix].

Purpose The aim of the present study was to assess the perceptibility and acceptability threshold values for color differentiation at the restoration and mucosa levels. Materials and methods One restored single-tooth implant and the contralateral reference tooth were spectrophotometrically assessed in 20 patients. Perceptibility and acceptability were evaluated by dentists, dental technicians, and laypeople. Results Dental technicians had the highest sensitivity in the perception of tooth color differences (ΔE = 2.7), followed by dentists (ΔE = 3.3) and laypeople (ΔE = 4.4). Acceptability threshold values were generally higher than perceptibility threshold in all groups. Dental technicians exhibited the highest sensitivity in the perception of mucosa color differences (50% perceptibility at ΔE = 2.65), followed by dentists (ΔE > 3.7) and laypeople (ΔE > 6). Conclusion Color differences were tolerated with varying degrees among the three groups. Laypeople accepted higher color differences at the mucosa level.

This study proposes a new strategy of extracting parameters for tapped delay line (TDL) channel models from vehicle to infrastructure channel measurements. The proposed approach is based on an already existing method to derive parameters for a non-stationary model using first-order Markov chains. It will be shown that with the proposed method, the number of taps necessary to regenerate the delay spread of a channel can be significantly reduced. An approach will be discussed to evaluate the performance of the model. The feasibility of the method will be confirmed using channel sounding measurements.

Peri-implant bone dehiscences were grafted either with deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) block or with particulate DBBM, both covered with a collagen membrane and stabilized with resorbable pins. After 6 months, 17 biopsy samples were included for histologic assessment. Block and particulate DBBM rendered successful tissue integration. Particulate DBBM showed a median of 25.2% of new bone and 31.3% of bone substitute. In the block group, there was a median of 11.5% of new bone and 36.0% of bone substitute. When interpreting the discrepancy in new bone between the groups, the difference in the size of the augmented hard tissue needs to be taken into account.

Automotive radar systems are indispensable for advanced driver assistance systems and traffic safety. Besides existing monostatic radar techniques, bi-static radar sensing like passive coherent location offers additional options to improve the radar visibility of vulnerable road users. Regarding the testing and evaluation of signal processing algorithms including parameter estimation, it is essential to provide electromagnetically shielded and reproducible measurement conditions, in addition to field tests in real traffic scenarios. This study describes the possibility to emulate relevant performance parameters for bi-static radar scenarios in the frequency range from 1 GHz to 6 GHz in a metal-shielded semi-anechoic chamber. Of special interest are the bi-static angle between transmitter, target, and receiver, and the resulting bi-static Doppler frequencies of a realistic vehicular traffic scenario. According to the concept of cooperative passive coherent location, Doppler scattering measurements are presented and compared to electromagnetic simulations. The authors find promising agreement between measured and ground truth data in the delay-Doppler spectrum.

Employing frequency bands above 100 GHz for future frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar applications necessitate hardware realizations as monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC). Spurious signals stemming from hardware impairments deteriorate target detection performance, but hardware-based mitigation is not preferred, given the increased cost and size of the integrated circuits. Instead, signal processing-based mitigation is favored. In this article, an approach is proposed to mitigate hardware impairments by parametric, model-based signal processing. For one particular FMCW radar operating at 160 GHz, a behavioral model of the radar device is developed, which accounts for the hardware impairments. This device model is incorporated in the data model of a maximum-likelihood parameter estimator that both resolves target ranges and mitigates spurious signal components. The mitigation performance and the improved robustness of target detection of this approach in the presence of hardware impairments are demonstrated by measurements.

Aim: To test whether or not buccal vertical bone dehiscences (≤5 mm) around posterior implants left for spontaneous healing (SH) result in the same clinical and radiologic outcome as dehiscences treated with guided bone regeneration (GBR) at 7.5 years after implant placement (IMPL). Materials and methods: Twenty-two patients receiving 28 posterior implants with a small non-contained buccal bone dehiscence (≤5 mm) were randomly assigned to the SH or the GBR group. Implants were loaded at 6 months. Clinical parameters (probing depths, sulcus bleeding index, plaque index) and approximal marginal radiographic bone levels were assessed regularly up to at least 6.8 years. The vertical extension of the dehiscences was measured clinically at IMPL and abutment connection and radiographically on cone beam computed tomographys at a mean follow-up time of 7.5 years. Results: Twenty patients with a total of 26 implants were recalled at 7.5 years (9.1% dropout). The implant/crown survival rates were 100% in both groups. Stable peri-implant tissues were observed in both groups showing only minimal signs of inflammation. During the entire study period (IMPL-7.5-year follow-up), the median buccal vertical bone gain measured 1.61 mm for the GBR group and 0.62 for the SH group showing no significant difference between the groups. Also, at 7.5 years, the median approximal marginal bone levels (GBR: 0.53; SH: 0.68) were not significantly different between the two groups (p = .61) while the remaining median buccal vertical dehiscences were larger in the SH group (2.51 mm) compared to the GBR group (1.66 mm; p = .02). Conclusions: Implants with small non-contained buccal bone dehiscences exhibited high implant survival rates and healthy peri-implant tissues at 7.5 years. In the GBR group, the buccal vertical bone levels were higher compared to the SH group but remained stable over the entire study period for both treatments. OBJECTIVES To test the non-inferiority of demineralized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) compared to demineralized bovine bone mineral with 10% collagen (DBBM-C) for the maintenance of the soft tissue contour after tooth extraction in the esthetic zone. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty-five patients randomly received ridge preservation at a single site in the anterior maxilla with DBBM or DBBM-C. Both, DBBM and DBBM-C were covered with a collagen matrix. Profilometric analyses were performed at baseline (BL), immediately after treatment (PO) and at 4 months (FU; day of implant placement). The main outcome was the horizontal mean change (HC) at the buccal aspect. The measurements also included changes of the estimated soft tissue thickness (eTT) at 1mm, 3mm and 5mm below the buccal gingival margin. Descriptive analysis was performed and differences between groups were analyzed using independent samples t-test. The non-inferiority test was performed for HC. RESULTS At 4 months, the horizontal mean change (HC) was -1.43mm (±0.53mm) (DBBM-C) and -1.32mm (±0.53mm) (DBBM). Change of the estimated soft tissue thickness (eTT) between baseline (BL) and four months of follow-up (FU) at 1mm, 3mm and 5mm amounted to -4.58mm (±2.02mm), -2.40mm (±0.97mm) and -1.37mm (±0.78mm) for DBBM-C and to -4.12mm (±1.80mm), -2.09mm (±0.91mm) and -1.23mm (±0.72mm) for DBBM. The differences between the groups were not statistically significantly for any of the outcome measures (p > .05). CONCLUSIONS DBBM is non-inferior to DBBM-C for the maintenance of the soft tissue contour 4 months after tooth extraction.

The management and prevention of soft tissue complications is of key importance in modern implant dentistry and influences biologic and esthetic outcomes. The assessment of the soft tissue conditions from a quantitative and qualitative perspective should, therefore, be part of the overall treatment plan. Such an assessment dictates a potential indication as well as an ideal time point for additional soft tissue management. A proper risk assessment and management of the soft tissues at the planned implant site are of key importance prior to any implant-related surgery. Cases with peri-implant soft tissue complications generally involve: (a) a lack of attached and keratinized mucosa; (b) insufficient volume; (c) development of mucosal dehiscences; or (d) a combination of (a), (b), and (c). In case of soft tissue deficiencies, these should be addressed as early as possible to increase the predictability of the surgical interventions. This article reviews the main causes for peri-implant soft tissue complications and presents different therapeutic options for the management of various clinical scenarios.

To determine the effect of (1) implant placement timing and (2) the type of soft tissue graft in terms of ridge profile changes.Four implant treatment modalities were applied in the mesial root areas of the third and fourth mandibular premolars of 10 mongrel dogs alongside connective-tissue graft (CTG) and volume-stable cross-linked collagen matrix (VCMX): immediate, early, and delayed placement (DP), and DP following alveolar ridge preservation (ARP). All dogs were sacrificed 3 months after soft tissue augmentation. Standard Tessellation Language files from designated time points were analysed.Compared with the pre-extraction situation, the median width of the ridge demontstrated a linear increase only in group ARP/CTG (0.07 mm at the 2-mm level), whereas all other groups showed a reduction (between -1.87 and -0.09 mm, p .05). Groups ARP/CTG (0.17 mm) and DP/CTG (0.05 mm) exhibited a profilometric tissue gain in a set region of interest (p .05). The net effect of CTG and VCMX ranged from 0.14 to 0.79 mm.Dimensional ridge changes varied between treatment protocols. ARP with CTG led to the smallest difference in ridge profile between the pre-extraction and the study end time point. Both CTG and VCMX enhanced the ridge contour.

To test whether the emergence profile (CONVEX or CONCAVE) of implant-supported crowns influences the mucosal margin stability up to 12 months after insertion of the final restoration.Forty-seven patients with a single implant in the anterior region were randomly allocated to one of three groups: (1) CONVEX (n = 15), implant provisional and an implant-supported crown both with a convex profile; (2) CONCAVE (n = 16), implant provisional and an implant-supported crown both with a concave profile; (3) CONTROL (n = 16), no provisional (healing abutment only) and an implant-supported crown. All patients were recalled at baseline, 6, and 12 months. The stability of mucosal margin along with clinical, aesthetic, and profilometric outcomes as well as time and costs were evaluated. To predict the presence of recession, multivariable logistic regressions were performed and linear models using generalized estimation equations were conducted for the different outcomes.Forty-four patients were available at 12 months post-loading. The frequency of mucosal recession amounted to 64.3% in group CONVEX, 14.3% in group CONCAVE, and 31.4% in group CONTROL. Regression models revealed that a CONVEX profile was significantly associated with the presence of recessions (odds ratio: 12.6, 95% confidence interval: 1.82-88.48, p = .01) compared with the CONCAVE profile. Pink aesthetic scores amounted to 5.9 in group CONVEX, 6.2 in group CONCAVE, and 5.4 in group CONTROL, with no significant differences between the groups (p = .735). Groups CONVEX and CONCAVE increased the appointments and costs compared with the CONTROL group.The use of implant-supported provisionals with a CONCAVE emergence profile results in a greater stability of the mucosal margin compared with a CONVEX profile up to 12 months of loading. HELENA Study Group: et al., [Background and aims] This study aims to examine the associations of food portion size (PS) with markers of insulin resistance (IR) and clustered of metabolic risk score in European adolescents., [Methods] A total of 495 adolescents (53.5% females) from the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence (HELENA) study were included. The association between PS from food groups and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index, VO2 max, and metabolic risk score was assessed by multilinear regression analysis adjusting for several confounders. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to determine the mean differences of food PS from food groups by HOMA-IR cutoff categories by using maternal education as a covariable., [Results] Larger PS from vegetables in both gender and milk, yoghurt, and milk beverages in males were associated with higher VO2 max, while larger PS from margarines and vegetable oils were associated with lower VO2 max (p < 0.05). Males who consumed larger PS from fish and fish products; meat substitutes, nuts, and pulses; cakes, pies, and biscuits; and sugar, honey, jams, and chocolate have a higher metabolic risk score (p < 0.05). Males with lower HOMA-IR cutoff values consumed larger PS from vegetables, milk, yoghurt, and milk beverages (p < 0.05). This study aims to examine the composition of lining and masticatory mucosa at the pre- and post-soft tissue augmentation procedures with a volume-stable cross-linking collagen matrix (VCMX) in humans. In 12 patients, single implant sites were augmented with a VCMX. Biopsies were obtained including masticatory (MM) and lining (LM) mucosa before augmentation and at 12 weeks post-augmentation procedures. Rete pegs density (RPD), length (RPL), and blood vessel density (BVD) were histomorphometrically analyzed at both time points. Picrosirius red staining under polarized light microscopy was used to evaluate collagen fiber organization. The effects of time and tissue type were evaluated by ANOVA with repeated measures. Patient populations differ for elective vs urgent and emergent surgery. The effect of this difference on surgical outcome is not well understood and may be important for improving surgical safety. Our primary hypothesis was that there is an association of surgical acuity with risk of postoperative cardiac events. Secondarily, we examined elective vs urgent and emergent patients separately to understand patient characteristics that are associated with postoperative cardiac events.We performed a retrospective cohort study of patients ≥65 years undergoing noncardiac elective or urgent/emergent surgery. Logistic regression estimated the association of surgical acuity with a postoperative cardiac event, which was defined as myocardial infarction or cardiac arrest within 30 days of surgery. For the secondary analysis, we modeled the outcome after stratifying by acuity.The study included 161,177 patients with 1014 cardiac events. The unadjusted risk of a postoperative cardiac event was 3.2 per 1000 among elective patients and 28.7 per 1000 among urgent and emergent patients (adjusted odds ratio 4.10, 95% confidence interval 3.56-4.72). After adjustment, increased age, higher baseline cardiac risk, peripheral vascular disease, hypertension, worse American Society of Anesthesiologist (ASA) physical classification, and longer operative time were associated with a postoperative cardiac event. Higher baseline cardiac risk was more strongly associated with postoperative cardiac events in elective patients. In contrast, worse ASA physical classification was more strongly associated with postoperative cardiac events in urgent and emergent patients. Black patients had higher odds of a postoperative cardiac event only in urgent and emergent patients compared to White patients.Quality measurement and improvement to address postoperative cardiac risk should consider patients based on surgical acuity.

The aim of this study was to identify the additional effects of collagen membrane (CM) and of synthetic bone substitute (BS) on lateral bone augmentation of chronic peri-implant defect with titanium mesh (TM).Atrophic alveolar ridge was induced in six canine mandibles, and 5 peri-implant defects were achieved in each hemi-mandible. Bone augmentation was attempted using the following randomly allocated modalities: (1) Control: no treatment, (2) TM only group: blood clot covered by TM, (3) TM+BS group: BS covered by TM, (4) TM+CM group: blood clot covered by TM and CM, and (5) TM+BS+CM group: BS covered by TM and CM. After 16 weeks of submerged healing, micro-CT and histomorphometric analyses were performed.TM exposure occurred in one case in the TM only group, one case in the TM+CM group, and two cases in the TM+BS+CM group. Histologically, pseudo-periosteum was observed along the inner and outer surfaces of TM, and the directions of the collagen fiber within the pseudo-periosteum differed according to the additional use of CM. In general, the TM only group rendered higher values in vertical defect fill and dimension of the augmented hard tissue in comparison with the other treatment groups.Due to the small sample size, this pilot study remains inconclusive. Within the limitations of the study, the use of CM and/or BS did not appear to have an additional benefit on lateral bone augmentation of peri-implant defect with TM.

To assess clinical, technical, biological, and radiographic outcomes of implants supporting fixed restorations using two types of dental implants with non-matching implant-abutment junctions at 8 years.Sixty-four patients were randomly assigned to receive one of two implant systems (S1 or S2) and eventually fixed restorations. Patients were examined at loading (TNinety-eight implants were inserted in 64 patients and loaded with fixed restorations. At 8 years, 49 patients with 42 (S1) and 36 (S2) implants (25 in group S1 and 24 in group S2 on the patient level) were re-examined. The survival rates on the patient level were 97.6% (S1) and 97.2% (S2). The marginal bone levels (the primary endpoint) amounted to a gain of 0.21 mm (Q1: -0.11 mm; Q3: 0.5 mm) (S1) (p = .007) and to a loss of 0.24 mm (Q1: -0.79 mm; Q3: 0.05 mm) (S2) (p = .001) between baseline (TDental implants with non-matching implant-abutment junctions supporting fixed restorations resulted in high survival rates independent of the system used. Differences, mainly observed in terms of technical complications (in favor of S2), biological complications (in favor of S1), and marginal bone-level changes (in favor of group S1), appear to be clinically negligible.

To assess the frequency and quantity of interproximal contact loss (ICL) between implant restorations and adjacent teeth after at least 10 years of follow-up (FU).Thirty-nine patients (median age 57.3 years) with 80 implants were re-examined at least 10 years after insertion of final restorations (single crowns or fixed dental prostheses (FDPs)). Baseline (insertion of the restorations) and FU examinations encompassed the following: Stone casts were scanned and superimposed for metric assessment of tooth movements, radiographs, and clinical measurements. Outcome measures at implant sites were as follows: the extent of tooth movement and the frequency of interproximal contact loss [ICL], peri-implant marginal bone levels [MBLs], and clinical measurements (plaque control record [PCR], Bleeding on Probing [BOP], and probing depth [PD]). Data were analyzed statistically with generalized regression modeling with robust standard errors to account for within-patient clustering at 5%.Interproximal contact loss for at least one contact point after 10 years was observed in 50% of all implants (with open interproximal spaces up to 1.64 mm). Mesial contact points were significantly more prone to ICL than distal ones (relative risk [RR] = 1.79; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.07-2.99; p = .03). The type of restoration had a significant effect on ICL, with FDPs of 2 implants being significantly more prone to mesial ICL than single crowns (RR = 1.52; 95% CI = 1.02-2.25; p = .04). ICL was also associated with a significant increase in PD (+0.46 mm (95% CI = 0.04-0.88 mm; p = .03)) compared to implant sites without ICL. BOP, MBLs, and PCR were not significantly influenced by ICL.Interproximal contact loss was a common finding in 50% of the implant sites and was significantly associated with an increase in PD.

OBJECTIVES: The task of working Group 2 at the 6th Consensus Meeting of the European Association for Osseointegration was to comprehensively assess the effects of soft tissue augmentation procedures at dental implant sites on clinical, radiographic and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) including an overview on available outcome measures and methods of assessment.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three systematic reviews and one critical review were performed in advance on (i) the effects of soft tissue augmentation procedures on clinical, radiographic and aesthetic outcomes, (ii) reliability and validity of outcome measures and methods of assessment and (iii) PROMs applied in clinical studies for soft tissue augmentation procedures at dental implant sites. Major findings, consensus statements, clinical recommendations and implications for future research were discussed in the group and approved during the plenary sessions.RESULTS: The four reviews predominantly revealed: Soft tissue augmentation procedures in conjunction with immediate and delayed implant placement result in superior aesthetic outcomes compared to no soft tissue augmentation in the zone of aesthetic priority. Soft tissue augmentation procedures have a limited effect on marginal bone level changes compared to implant sites without soft tissue augmentation. Clinically relevant parameters (gingival index, mucosal recession) and plaque control improve at implant sites when the width of keratinised mucosa is increased. A variety of aesthetic indices have been described with good reliability. Pink Esthetic Score and Complex Esthetic Index are the most validated aesthetic indices for single implants, though. Superimposed digital surface scans are most accurate to assess profilometric tissue changes. PROMs following soft tissue augmentation procedures have been assessed using various forms of questionnaires. Soft tissue augmentation had a limited effect on PROMs.CONCLUSIONS: Soft tissue augmentation procedures are widely applied in conjunction with implant therapy. Depending on the indication of these interventions, clinical, radiographic and aesthetic outcomes may improve, whereas the effect on PROMs is limited.

The lower THz bands are foreseen as candidates to achieve the data-rates demanded in the sixth generation (6G) of wireless communications. Hence, multiple measurements for characterization of propagation at these frequencies in different scenarios are being conducted all around the world. This also impulses activities on standardization of measurement equipment and methodologies to define common practices and make measurements from different actors comparable. Therefore, in the present paper we investigate the accuracy of a dual-polarized ultra-wideband channel sounder in the time, angular, and polarization domains by means of a verification methodology based on interferometry.

To analyze the influence of compression on tissue integration and degradation of soft tissue substitutes.Six subcutaneous pouches in twenty-eight rats were prepared and boxes made of AlThe area fraction of fibroblasts increased in all groups over time. At 12 weeks, the densely compressed materials FG4 (1.1%), MGA4 (1.7%), and MGA2 (2.5%) obtained lower values as compared to the other groups, ranging between 4.7 (E2) and 6.5% (MG). Statistically significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) were observed between groups FG4 vs MG/FG2/E/E4 as well as between MGA4 vs MG/FG2/E/E4 and E vs MGA2.Higher levels of compression led to delayed tissue integration. The effect of different compression levels was more distinct when compared to the differences between the materials.All biomaterials demonstrated tissue integration and a minimal concomitant inflammatory reaction. Clinically, it might be more favorable to obtain a sufficient flap release or to reduce the material size to improve the tissue integration processes.

PURPOSE To assess the clinical outcomes of single-retainer resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) and the profilometric changes of pontic sites after a mean of 10 years in function. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ten patients (mean age 32.4 years) who had received an RBFDP replacing a single anterior tooth were recalled after 10 years. Five patients had received a subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) at the pontic site. The clinical assessment comprised the following parameters: probing depth, bleeding on probing, modified plaque control record, gingival recession, measurement of the width of keratinized mucosa, and intraoral photographs and radiographs. The modified criteria of the United States Public Health Services evaluation system were applied. Additionally, patient satisfaction was recorded. Data were analyzed descriptively, and the 10-year RBFDP survival rates were calculated using Kaplan-Meier analysis. RESULTS The RBFDP survival rate after a mean follow-up of 10.0 years (range 7.4 to 13.3 years) was 100%. Neither technical failures nor biologic complications were observed. All abutment teeth remained vital, and no secondary caries were detected. Between baseline and follow-up examinations, the profilometric changes at the pontic sites were minimal, exhibiting a loss of -0.03 ± 0.10 mm (no SCTG) and 0.00 ± 0.37 mm (SCTG). CONCLUSION The present study exhibited high survival rates and low complication rates of the restorations, as well as excellent profilometric stability of the pontic sites over 10 years. The use of an RBFDP is a viable long-term treatment option for replacing a single anterior tooth.

AIM To assess the effect of Schneiderian membrane (SM) perforation on bone formation by applying a particulate deproteinized bovine bone mineral (PBBM). MATERIALS AND METHODS Bilateral sinus augmentation was performed in eight rabbits. The same amount of PBBM was placed at a sinus where the SM was intentionally perforated for the perforation group (standardized to 3 mm diameter) and the other sinus with an intact SM that served as the intact group. At 12 weeks, all animals were euthanized for radiographic and histomorphometric analyses. RESULTS The area of the newly formed bone in the perforation group was significantly less than that in the intact group (18.7% and 25.5%, respectively, p = .028). This study was conducted to assess the effect of hard and/or soft tissue grafting on immediate implants in a preclinical model.In 5 mongrel dogs, the distal roots of P2 and P3 were extracted from the maxilla (4 sites in each animal), and immediate implant placement was performed. Each site was randomly assigned to 1 of the following 4 groups: i) gap filling with guided bone regeneration (the GBR group), ii) subepithelial connective tissue grafting (the SCTG group), iii) GBR and SCTG (the GBR/SCTG group), and iv) no further treatment (control). Non-submerged healing was provided for 4 months. Histological and histomorphometric analyses were performed.Peri-implant tissue height and thickness favored the SCTG group (height of peri-implant mucosa: 1.14 mm; tissue thickness at the implant shoulder and ±1 mm from the shoulder: 1.14 mm, 0.78 mm, and 1.57 mm, respectively; median value) over the other groups. Bone grafting was not effective at the level of the implant shoulder and on the coronal level of the shoulder. In addition, simultaneous soft and hard tissue augmentation (the GBR/SCTG group) led to a less favorable tissue contour compared to GBR or SCTG alone (height of peri-implant mucosa: 3.06 mm; thickness of peri-implant mucosa at the implant shoulder and ±1 mm from the shoulder: 0.72 mm, 0.3 mm, and 1.09 mm, respectively).SCTG tended to have positive effects on the thickness and height of the peri-implant mucosa in immediate implant placement. However, simultaneous soft and hard tissue augmentation might not allow a satisfactory tissue contour in cases where the relationship between implant position and neighboring bone housing is unfavorable.

Leakage in frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar with a homodyne receiver induces strong signal components in the lower frequency parts of the radar observations. There, the dynamic range of the observations has been reduced, such that close and weak targets are hard to detect. In this letter, a signal processing method is proposed to mitigate the leakage. First, background subtraction is applied to cancel the leakage. As the cancellation is imperfect, a noisy signal portion remains: the leakage noise. A statistical model is developed to describe the leakage noise as a colored noise process. This model is parameterized from measurements and used to whiten the observations. As a result, the dynamic range is improved, and the close targets become better detectable.

AIM To compare late implant placement following alveolar ridge preservation (LP/ARP) and early implantation (EP) in periodontally compromised non-molar extraction sites with respect to soft tissue levels, esthetics, and patient-reported outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixteen patients were randomly allocated to groups LP/ARP (n = 9) or EP (n = 7). Group LP/ARP received ARP using deproteinized bovine bone mineral containing 10% collagen and a native bilayer collagen membrane, and group EP received only extraction. Implant placement was performed 4-8 weeks post-extraction in group EP and 4 months post-alveolar ridge preservation in group LP/ARP. The soft tissue levels, pink/white esthetic scores, and periodontal parameters were evaluated 1-year post-loading. Patient's discomfort level was evaluated at the time of extraction/ARP and implant placement. RESULTS No implant failure or biologic complications occurred. There was no statistically significant difference in the median change of the midfacial mucosal margin (0.03 for group LP/ARP, -0.19 mm for group EP) and the mesial/distal papilla (0.62/0.25 mm for group LP/ARP, 0.29/-0.5 mm for group EP), pink/white esthetic scores, periodontal parameters, and patient's discomfort between the two groups. CONCLUSION Both implant placement protocols led to comparable outcomes in soft tissue levels, periodontal parameters, and patient's discomfort level.

Compare clinical outcomes of two types of dental implants with non-matching implant-abutment junctions loaded with fixed implant-borne reconstructions at 5 years of loading.In 64 patients, one of two implant systems (S1, S2) was randomly used to support fixed dental prostheses (FDP). At loading (TNinety-seven implants were placed and loaded with fixed reconstructions in 64 patients. At TBoth implant systems revealed high survival rates and minimal changes of the marginal bone levels during 5 years. Few biological complications occurred in both groups. S1 revealed a high rate of technical complications. Therefore, both implant systems can be recommended for fixed reconstructions.

5G promises many new vertical service areas beyond simple communication and data transfer. We propose CPCL (cooperative passive coherent location), a distributed MIMO radar service, which can be offered by mobile radio network operators as a service for public user groups. CPCL comes as an inherent part of the radio network and takes advantage of the most important key features proposed for 5G. It extends the well-known idea of passive radar (also known as passive coherent location, PCL) by introducing cooperative principles. These range from cooperative, synchronous radio signaling, and MAC up to radar data fusion on sensor and scenario levels. By using software-defined radio and network paradigms, as well as real-time mobile edge computing facilities intended for 5G, CPCL promises to become a ubiquitous radar service which may be adaptive, reconfigurable, and perhaps cognitive. As CPCL makes double use of radio resources (both in terms of frequency bands and hardware), it can be considered a green technology. Although we introduce the CPCL idea from the viewpoint of vehicle-to-vehicle/infrastructure (V2X) communication, it can definitely also be applied to many other applications in industry, transport, logistics, and for safety and security applications.

OBJECTIVES: To test whether or not the use of a xenogeneic block loaded with rhBMP-2 results in superior radiological and profilometric outcomes compared to an autogenous bone block. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four patients randomly received a xenogeneic block loaded with rhBMP-2 (test) or an autogenous bone block (control) for primary augmentation. The ridge width (RW) was evaluated by means of a CBCT scan after augmentation surgery and at 4 months, prior to implant placement. Surface scans were taken prior to augmentation and at 4 months for profilometric analyses. Data were analyzed with Wilcoxon-signed rank test, Mann-Whitney test, or nonparametric ANOVA models. RESULTS: The median RW after augmentation amounted to 7.13 mm (Q1 = 6.02; Q3 = 8.47) for test and 6.86 mm (Q1 = 5.99; Q3 = 8.95) for control. During 4 months of healing, the total RW decreased statistically significantly and measured 5.35 mm (Q1 = 4.53; Q3 = 6.7) for test and 5.15 mm (Q1 = 3.57; Q3 = 7.24) for control (p = 0.0005). The differences between the groups were not statistically significant (p > 0.5899). The buccal soft tissue contour slightly increased for test (0.83 mm; Q1 = 0.62; Q3 = 1.87) and control (1.16 mm; Q1 = 0.50; Q3 = 1.44). CONCLUSIONS: Both treatment modalities successfully increased the ridge width to a similar extent. The shrinkage during healing was not greater in the test than in the control group. The impact of hard tissue augmentation on the soft tissue contour was, however, minimal.
