Abstract

Abstract In this article, we study further applications of the Schwarzschild–Finsler–Randers (SFR) model which was introduced in a previous work Triantafyllopoulos et al. (Eur Phys J C 80(12):1200, 2020). In this model, we investigate curvatures and the generalized Kretschmann invariant which plays a crucial role for singularities. In addition, the derived path equations are used for the gravitational redshift of the SFR-model and these are compared with the GR model. Finally, we get some results for different values of parameters of the generalized photonsphere of the SFR-model and we find small deviations from the classical results of general relativity (GR) which may be ought to the possible Lorentz violation effects.

Abstract

Abstract In this work, we extend for the first time the spherically symmetric Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild–De Sitter solutions with a Finsler–Randers-type perturbation which is generated by a covector $$A_\gamma $$ A γ . This gives a locally anisotropic character to the metric and induces a deviation from the Riemannian models of gravity. A natural framework for this study is the Lorentz tangent bundle of a spacetime manifold. We apply the generalized field equations to the perturbed metric and derive the dynamics for the covector $$A_\gamma $$ A γ . Finally, we find the timelike, spacelike and null paths on the Schwarzschild–Randers spacetime, we solve the timelike ones numerically and we compare them with the classic geodesics of general relativity. The obtained solutions are new and they enrich the corresponding literature.

Abstract

Abstract In the context of Finsler–Randers theory we consider, for the first time, the cosmological scenario of the varying vacuum. In particular, we assume the existence of a cosmological fluid source described by an ideal fluid and the varying vacuum terms. We determine the cosmological history of this model by performing a detailed study on the dynamics of the field equations. We determine the limit of General Relativity, while we find new eras in the cosmological history provided by the geometrodynamical terms provided by the Finsler–Randers theory.

Abstract

The exploration of the universe has recently entered a new era thanks to the multimessenger paradigm, characterized by a continuous increase in the quantity and quality of experimental data that is obtained by the detection of the various cosmic messengers (photons, neutrinos, cosmic rays and gravitational waves) from numerous origins. They give us information about their sources in the universe and the properties of the intergalactic medium. Moreover, multi-messenger astronomy opens up the possibility to search for phenomenological signatures of quantum gravity. On the one hand, the most energetic events allow us to test our physical theories at energy regimes which are not directly accessible in accelerators; on the other hand, tiny effects in the propagation of very high energy particles could be amplified by cosmological distances. After decades of merely theoretical investigations, the possibility of obtaining phenomenological indications of Planck-scale effects is a revolutionary step in the quest for a quantum theory of gravity, but it requires cooperation between different communities of physicists (both theoretical and experimental). Abstract

Osteoclast (OC) progenitors (OCP) have been defined in the bone marrow (BM) as CD3(-)CD45R(B220)(-)GR1(-)CD11b(lo/)(-)CD115(+) (dOCP) and more recently in the peripheral blood (PB) as Lym(-)Ly6G(-)CD11b(+)Ly6C(+). These progenitors respond to stimuli, including LPS from periopathogenic Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, activating MAPK signaling, resulting in cytokine/chemokine-mediated osteoclastogenesis. Intracellular negative signaling pathways, including MAPK phosphatase-1 (MKP-1, gene Dusp1) deactivate MAPK pathways (p-p38 and p-JNK) and reduce inflammatory cytokines/chemokines.To delineate the role of MKP-1 in chemokine-mediated OC formation using defined OC progenitor populations. Given its role in innate immune inflammatory signaling, we hypothesize that MKP-1 regulates LPS-induced OC formation from BM OCP through deregulated chemokines.BM and PB from WT and Dusp1(-/-) female mice (8-12weeks) was obtained and sorted into defined progenitor populations. BM sorted dOCP were primed with MCSF and RANKL (48h), blocked with vehicle or chemokine blocking antibodies and stimulated with LPS (48-96h). TRAP assay and OC activity were measured for OC formation and activity following treatments. NanoString Array and qPCR were utilized for gene expression analysis.Dusp1(-/-) dOCPs formed more and larger osteoclasts from CD11b(hi) and dOCP compared to matched WT (P0.05 each). PB-derived dOCP produced larger and more functional osteoclasts from Dusp1(-/-) mice compared to WT controls. NanoString array data revealed significant deregulation in chemokine expression from Dusp1(-/-) versus WT cells. qPCR validation of target genes revealed that Dusp1 deficient CD11b(+) populations display 1.5-3.5-fold greater expression of CXCL1 and 2-3-fold greater expression of CXCL2 compared to WT in CD11b(hi) and dOCP (P0.05 each). Antibody blocking studies using anti-CXCL1 and CXCL2 antibodies blunted osteoclastogenesis in Dusp1(-/-) cells.MKP-1 negatively regulates chemokine-driven OC formation and subsequent bone resorption in response to LPS stimulation. Collectively, these data provide useful insight into mechanisms potentially leading to the development of therapeutic treatment of periodontal disease.

Abstract

Background and Objective Periodontal disease pathogenesis is comprised of the complex inflammatory immune response to oral bacterial dysbiosis. Like other inflammatory diseases, there is sexual dimorphism evident in periodontal diseases. During periodontitis, inflammatory chemokines direct neutrophils to migrate to the site of infection to neutralize the pathogen. Interestingly, these same chemokines are also involved in regulating pathogen-induced osteoclast formation. Previous reports show differences in bone turnover and lymphocyte recruitment between sexes. We hypothesize that chemokine expression is differentially regulated by sex and thus results in differential osteoclast formation. Material and Methods Male and female mice were utilized to isolate neutrophils based on expression of Ly6G-specific, as well as defined osteoclast progenitors. Cells were stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 100 ng/mL) then analyzed for neutrophil infiltration and gene expression. Defined osteoclast progenitors were primed: macrophage-colony stimulating factor (25 ng/mL), receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (50 ng/mL), then stimulated with LPS. Osteoclasts were enumerated via TRAP stain and mRNA isolated for gene expression analysis via quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Results In response to LPS, male neutrophils in vitro respond with increased chemokine expression and significantly more osteoclast formed in response to LPS compared to females. Conclusions Findings support observations in humans regarding a sexual dimorphism in oral bacterial infections of alveolar bone loss. Males have a strong inflammatory response to bacterial infection, resulting in increased inflammatory microenvironment, reduced pathogenic bacteria clearance and increased osteoclast-driven bone loss in response to differential expression of key chemokines.

Abstract

We propose to use alternative cosmic tracers to measure the dark energy equation of state and the matter content of the Universe [w(z)&Ωm]. Our proposed method consists of two components: (a) tracing the Hubble relation using HII galaxies which can be detected up to very large redshifts, z∼4, as an alternative to supernovae type Ia, and (b) measuring the clustering pattern of X‐ray selected AGN at a median redshift of ∼1. Each component of the method can in itself provide interesting constraints on the cosmological parameters, especially under our anticipation that we will reduce the corresponding random and systematic errors significantly. However, by joining their likelihood functions we will be able to put stringent cosmological constraints and break the known degeneracies between the dark energy equation of state (whether it is constant or variable) and the matter content of the universe and provide a powerful and alternative route to measure the contribution to the global dynamics and the equation of...

Abstract

We present the final band-merged ELAIS catalogue at 6.7, 15, 90, and 175 $��$m, and the associated data at u,g,r,i,z,J,H,K, and 20cm. The origin of the survey, infrared and radio observations, data-reduction and optical identifications are briefly reviewed, and a summary of the area covered, and completeness limit for each infrared band is given. A detailed discussion of the band-merging and optical association strategy is given. The total catalogues consists of 2860 sources. For extragalactic sources observed in 3 or more infrared bands, colour-colour diagrams are presented and discussed in terms of the contributing infrared populations. Spectral energy distributions are shown for selected sources and compared with cirrus, M82 and Arp220 starburst, and AGN dust torus models. Spectroscopic redshifts are tabulated, where available. For the N1 and N2 areas, the INT ugriz Wide Field Survey, permits photometric redshifts to be estimated for galaxies and quasars. These agree well with the spectroscopic redshifts, within the uncertainty of the photometric method. The redshift distribution is given for selected ELAIS bands and colour-redshift diagrams are discussed. There is a high proportion of ultraluminous infrared galaxies in the ELAIS Catalogue ($> 10 %$ of 15 $��$m sources), many with Arp220-like colours. 10 hyperluminous infrared galaxies and 10 EROs are found in the survey. The large numbers of ultraluminous galaxies imply very strong evolution in the star-formation rate between z = 0 and 1., 21 pages, 31 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

In this paper we present the first results from an on-going serendipitous survey aiming to identify X-ray selected `normal' galaxies (i.e. not AGN dominated) by combining archival XMM-Newton data with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. In the first 4.5deg2 of this program we have identified a total of 11 `normal' galaxy candidates (8 of them with optical spectroscopy) with fluxes f_X(0.5-8keV)~1e-15-1e-13cgs. 10. Finsler–Randers cosmology: dynamical analysis and growth of matter perturbations.

Abstract

We study for the first time the dynamical properties and the growth index of linear matter perturbations of the Finsler–Randers (FR) cosmological model, for which we consider that the cosmic fluid contains matter, radiation and a scalar field. Initially, for various FR scenarios we implement a critical point analysis and we find solutions which provide cosmic acceleration and under certain circumstances we can have de Sitter points as stable late-time attractors. Then we derive the growth index of matter fluctuations in various Finsler–Randers cosmologies. Considering cold dark matter and neglecting the scalar field component from the perturbation analysis we find that the asymptotic value of the growth index is , which is close to that of the concordance Λ cosmology, . In this context, we show that the current FR model provides the same Hubble expansion with that of the Dvali, Gabadadze and Porrati (DGP) gravity model. However, the two models can be distinguished at the perturbation level since the growth index of the FR model is  ∼18.2% lower than that of the the DPG gravity . If we allow pressure in the matter fluid then we obtain , where is the matter equation of state parameter. Finally, we extend the growth index analysis by using the scalar field and we find that the evolution of the growth index in FR cosmologies is affected by the presence of scalar field. 11. Constraints to Dark Energy Using PADE Parameterizations.

Abstract

We put constraints on dark energy (DE) properties using PADE parameterization, and compare it to the same constraints using Chevalier–Polarski–Linder (CPL) and ΛCDM, at both the background and the perturbation levels. The DE equation of the state parameter of the models is derived following the mathematical treatment of PADE expansion. Unlike CPL parameterization, PADE approximation provides different forms of the equation of state parameter that avoid the divergence in the far future. Initially we perform a likelihood analysis in order to put constraints on the model parameters using solely background expansion data, and we find that all parameterizations are consistent with each other. Then, combining the expansion and the growth rate data, we test the viability of PADE parameterizations and compare them with CPL and ΛCDM models, respectively. Specifically, we find that the growth rate of the current PADE parameterizations is lower than ΛCDM model at low redshifts, while the differences among the models are negligible at high redshifts. In this context, we provide for the first time a growth index of linear matter perturbations in PADE cosmologies. Considering that DE is homogeneous, we recover the well-known asymptotic value of the growth index (namely ), while in the case of clustered DE, we obtain . Finally, we generalize the growth index analysis in the case where γ is allowed to vary with redshift, and we find that the form of in PADE parameterization extends that of the CPL and ΛCDM cosmologies, respectively.
