Abstract

This work reports on accurate, high-resolution measurements of the 25Mg(n,γ)26Mg and 25Mg(n,tot) cross sections in the neutron energy range from thermal to about 300 keV, leading to a significantly improved 25Mg(n,γ)26Mg parametrization. The relevant resonances for n+25Mg were characterized from a combined R-matrix analysis of the experimental data. This resulted in an unambiguous spin/parity assignment of the corresponding excited states in 26Mg. With this information experimental upper limits of the reaction rates for 22Ne(α,n)25Mg and 22Ne(α,γ)26Mg were established, potentially leading to a significantly higher (α,n)/(α,γ) ratio than previously evaluated. The impact of these results has been studied for stellar models in the mass range 2 to 25 M⊙.

Abstract

The neutron time of flight (n_TOF) facility at CERN is a neutron spallation source, its white neutron energy spectrum ranges from thermal to several GeV, covering the full energy range of interest for nuclear astrophysics, in particular for measurements of the neutron capture cross-section required in s-process nucleosynthesis. This contribution gives an overview on the astrophysical program made at n_TOF facility, the results and the implications will be considered.

Abstract

The beta-decay of Re-187 (t(1/2) = 42.3 Gyr) represents a suited cosmo-chronometer for the age of the r-process abundances, since the radiogenic part of the daughter isotope (OS)-O-187 is defined by the difference between the solar Os-187 abundance and s-process contribution to Os-187. The latter component can be determined via the s-process systematics based on the stellar neutron capture cross sections of Os-186 and Os-187. The laboratory cross section of Os-187 requires a significant correction for the effect of the low-lying excited state at 9.75 keV, which is strongly populated under stellar conditions. This theoretical correction can be improved by an experimental cross section for inelastic scattering to the 9.75 keV state. High resolution time-of-flight measurements of (n, gamma) cross sections of (OS)-O-186,187,188 from I eV to I MeV at CERN n-TOF facility are reported. The inferred stellar cross sections differ from previously recommended values. In addition, the inelastic scattering cross section has been measured at 30 keV neutron energy via time-of-flight at the Karlsruhe 3.7 MV Van de Graaff. Abstract

We have measured the neutron capture cross sections of the stable magnesium isotopes 24,25,26Mg in the energy range of interest to the s process using the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN. Capture events from a natural metal sample and from samples enriched in 25Mg and 26Mg were recorded using the total energy method based on C6 2H6 detectors. Neutron resonance parameters were extracted by a simultaneous resonance shape analysis of the present capture data and existing transmission data on a natural isotopic sample. Maxwellian-averaged capture cross sections for the three isotopes were calculated up to thermal energies of 100 keV and their impact on s-process analyses was investigated. At 30 keV the new values of the stellar cross section for 24Mg, 25Mg, and 26Mg are 3.8±0.2 mb, 4.1±0.6 mb, and 0.14±0.01 mb, respectively.

Abstract

The radiative neutron capture cross section of 207Pb has been measured at the CERN neutron time of flight installation n_TOF using the pulse height weighting technique in the resolved energy region. The measurement has been performed with an optimized setup of two C6D6 scintillation detectors, which allowed us to reduce scattered neutron backgrounds down to a negligible level. Resonance parameters and radiative kernels have been determined for 16 resonances by means of an R-matrix analysis in the neutron energy range from 3 keV to 320 keV. Good agreement with previous measurements was found at low neutron energies, whereas substantial discrepancies appear beyond 45 keV. With the present results, we obtain an s-process contribution of 77(8)% to the solar abundance of 207Pb. This corresponds to an r-process component of 23(8)%, which is important for deriving the U/Th ages of metal poor halo stars., 7 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev. C

Abstract

The study of post‐AGB stars gives important informations on the s‐process inside AGB stars, as the s‐enrichment of post‐AGB stars is due to an intrinsic process. A sample of thirteen C‐and s‐rich post‐AGB stars were analyzed with AGB nucleosynthetic models at different masses, metallicities and s‐process efficiencies. We present and discuss the theoretical fits obtained for 3 selected stars of our sample. A summary of the results obtained by comparing spectroscopic abundances and AGB theoretical models for all the considered stars is reported.

9. s-Process in Low Metallicity Stars: CEMP-s and CEMP-s+r

Abstract

A sample of 74 very metal‐poor, C‐ and s‐rich rich stars were collected from the literature. We give here a summary of the results obtained by comparing spectroscopic abundances of CEMP‐s stars and AGB theoretical models, using different 13C‐pocket efficiencies, initial masses and initial r‐enrichments. They acquired the C and s enrichments by mass transfer in a close binary system from the more massive companion while on the AGB (now a white dwarf). In general, reasonable solutions are obtained for all the stars. About half of these objects have a relevant number of elements detected at high resolution spectroscopy, while only 10 of them were obtained at moderate resolution. When few elements were detected, several solutions are possible. For most of the main‐sequence turnoff stars, due to the low Na and, in some cases, the low ls peak (Sr‐Y‐Zr), a good interpretation can only be obtained with lower initial AGB masses (MiniAGB⩽1.4 M⊙), and the absence of dilution factors suggests that no efficient thermo...

10. High-resolution spectroscopic observations of twos-process-enriched and carbon-poor post-AGB stars: GLMP 334 and IRAS 15482−5741

Abstract

Aims. The study of post-AGB stars provides important information on the s-process inside asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. We determined the atmospheric parameters and abundance patterns of two post-AGB stars: GLMP 334 and IRAS 15482−5741 to better understand their evolutionary state and the nature of the s-element enhancement of these stars. Methods. We used high-resolution optical spectroscopy. Atmospheric parameters and abundances were determined in the localthermodynamic-equilibrium model atmospheres of Kurucz (1993, CD-ROM 13, SAO) using the spectral analysis code MOOG. Spectroscopic observations are compared with nucleosynthesis AGB models of different initial masses and s-process efficiencies. Results. Theoretical interpretations are presented and discussed. The observed distribution of neutron capture elements can be fitted with particular choices of AGB initial masses and of the 13C neutron source (13C-pocket strengths) obtained at the adopted [Fe/H] for each star, but the low [C/Fe] observed is incompatible with model predictions. The problem can be solved by increasing the metallicity by 0.2 dex, which is inside the spectroscopic uncertainty. The abundances of carbon and nitrogen observed in these stars may support the occurrence of an extra-mixing episode, the “cool bottom process”, even if its exact effect cannot be theoretically quantified yet.

The solar s-process abundances have been analyzed in the framework of a Galactic Chemical Evolution (GCE) model. The aim of this work is to implement the study by Bisterzo et al., who investigated the effect of one of the major uncertainties of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) yields, the internal structure of the 13C pocket. We present GCE predictions of s-process elements computed with additional tests in the light of suggestions provided in recent publications. The analysis is extended to different metallicities, by comparing GCE results and updated spectroscopic observations of unevolved field stars. We verify that the GCE predictions obtained with different tests may represent, on average, the evolution of selected neutron-capture elements in the Galaxy. The impact of an additional weak s-process contribution from fast-rotating massive stars is also explored. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The neutron capture cross section of 206Pb has been measured at the CERN n\TOF spectrometer using a setup of two C6D6 detectors. In the energy interval from 1 eV to 600 keV the cross section is dominated by resonances, which were analyzed via the R-matrix analysis code SAMMY. In the relevant energy ranges for stellar nucleosynthesis, i.e., at thermal energies of kT = 8 keV and kT = 23 keV, the present Maxwellian average cross section differs by 20% and 9% from the recommended values of Bao et al respectively. From the new cross section the s-abundance of 206Pb could be reliably determined as 70(4)%. This result is of importance in order to test and constrain r-process abundance calculations in the actinide region, because the r-process portion of 206Pb is dominated by a-back decays of short-lived transbismuth isotopes. Abstract

The neutron time of flight (n_TOF) facility at CERN is a spallation neutron source with white neutron energy spectrum (from thermal to several GeV), covering the full energy range of interest for nuclear astrophysics, in particular for measurements of the neutron capture cross section required in s-process nucleosynthesis. This contribution presents an overview on the astrophysical program carried on at the n_TOF facility, the main results and their implications.

Abstract

The neutron capture cross section of 204Pb has been measured at the CERN n_TOF installation with high resolution in the energy range from 1 eV to 440 keV. An R-matrix analysis of the resolved resonance region, between 1 eV and 100 keV, was carried out using the SAMMY code. In the interval between 100 keV and 440 keV we report the average capture cross section. The background in the entire neutron energy range could be reliably determined from the measurement of a 208Pb sample. Other systematic effects in this measurement could be investigated and precisely corrected by means of detailed Monte Carlo simulations. We obtain a Maxwellian average capture cross section for 204Pb at kT=30 keV of 79(3) mb, in agreement with previous experiments. However our cross section at kT=5 keV is about 35% larger than the values reported so far.
