Abstract: Abstract The KM3NeT/ARCA neutrino detector is currently under construction at 3500 m depth offshore Capo Passero, Sicily, in the Mediterranean Sea. The main science objectives are the detection of high-energy cosmic neutrinos and the discovery of their sources. Simulations were conducted for the full KM3NeT/ARCA detector, instrumenting a volume of 1 km $$^3$$ 3 , to estimate the sensitivity and discovery potential to point-like neutrino sources. This paper covers the reconstruction of track- and shower-like signatures, as well as the criteria employed for neutrino event selection. With an angular resolution below 0.1 $$^\circ $$ ∘ for tracks and under 2 $$^\circ $$ ∘ for showers, the sensitivity to point-like neutrino sources surpasses existing observed limits across the entire sky.

Abstract: Abstract The measurement of the flux of muons produced in cosmic ray air showers is essential for the study of primary cosmic rays. Such measurements are important in extensive air shower detectors to assess the energy spectrum and the chemical composition of the cosmic ray flux, complementary to the information provided by fluorescence detectors. Detailed simulations of the cosmic ray air showers are carried out, using codes such as CORSIKA, to estimate the muon flux at sea level. These simulations are based on the choice of hadronic interaction models, for which improvements have been implemented in the post-LHC era. In this work, a deficit in simulations that use state-of-the-art QCD models with respect to the measurement deep underwater with the KM3NeT neutrino detectors is reported. The KM3NeT/ARCA and KM3NeT/ORCA neutrino telescopes are sensitive to TeV muons originating mostly from primary cosmic rays with energies around 10 TeV. The predictions of state-of-the-art QCD models show that the deficit with respect to the data is constant in zenith angle; no dependency on the water overburden is observed. The observed deficit at a depth of several kilometres is compatible with the deficit seen in the comparison of the simulations and measurements at sea level.

3. Stability of the flow over superhydrophobic micro roughnesses: The influence of the interface

Abstract: Superhydrophobic surfaces are known for their drag reduction properties. However, the interface between the lubricant and the overlying flow may easily become unstable, leading to the depletion of the superhydrophobic layer and to a consequent drag increase. In this paper, we investigate the modal and non-modal instability of the flow over longitudinal trapezoidal superhydrophobic riblets, including, for the first time, the gas/liquid interface dynamics in the stability analyses. A two-dimensional stability problem, obtained with a domain transform technique and interface modelling using a linearised Young–Laplace equation, is coupled with the n−periodic stability framework introduced by Schmid et al. (2017). The latter technique, using a Bloch wave formalism, allows the computation of the stability of an array of n riblet units of given periodicity at a reasonable numerical cost. For small periodicities, the most unstable mode is a fundamental instability stemming from the three-dimensionalisation of a Tollmien–Schlichting wave. Conversely, in the case of large riblet periodicities, a subharmonic mode linked to capillarity effects becomes the most unstable. Nonmodal transient growth analysis shows that the superhydrophobic riblets have a weak effect on the overall growth. However, riblets having small periodicities induce a slight stabilisation of the flow, while large ones induce an increase of the energy growth on detuned perturbations. The resulting energy growth mechanism induces interface deformations encompassing more than one subunit.

Abstract: Abstract The ICARUS collaboration employed the 760-ton T600 detector in a successful 3-year physics run at the underground LNGS laboratory, performing a sensitive search for LSND-like anomalous $$\nu _e$$ ν e appearance in the CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso beam, which contributed to the constraints on the allowed neutrino oscillation parameters to a narrow region around 1 eV $$^2$$ 2 . After a significant overhaul at CERN, the T600 detector has been installed at Fermilab. In 2020 the cryogenic commissioning began with detector cool down, liquid argon filling and recirculation. ICARUS then started its operations collecting the first neutrino events from the booster neutrino beam (BNB) and the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam off-axis, which were used to test the ICARUS event selection, reconstruction and analysis algorithms. ICARUS successfully completed its commissioning phase in June 2022. The first goal of the ICARUS data taking will be a study to either confirm or refute the claim by Neutrino-4 short-baseline reactor experiment. ICARUS will also perform measurement of neutrino cross sections with the NuMI beam and several Beyond Standard Model searches. After the first year of operations, ICARUS will search for evidence of sterile neutrinos jointly with the Short-Baseline Near Detector, within the Short-Baseline Neutrino program. In this paper, the main activities carried out during the overhauling and installation phases are highlighted. Preliminary technical results from the ICARUS commissioning data with the BNB and NuMI beams are presented both in terms of performance of all ICARUS subsystems and of capability to select and reconstruct neutrino events.

Abstract: Abstract This article reports the first observation of the Moon and the Sun shadows in the sky distribution of cosmic-ray induced muons measured by the KM3NeT/ORCA detector. The analysed data-taking period spans from February 2020 to November 2021, when the detector had 6 Detection Units deployed at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, each composed of 18 Digital Optical Modules. The shadows induced by the Moon and the Sun were detected at their nominal position with a statistical significance of 4.2 $$\sigma $$ σ and 6.2 $$\sigma $$ σ , and an angular resolution of $$\sigma _{res}=0.49^\circ $$ σ res = 0 . 49 ∘ and $$\sigma _{res}=0.66^\circ $$ σ res = 0 . 66 ∘ , respectively, consistent with the prediction of $$0.53^\circ $$ 0 . 53 ∘ from simulations. This early result confirms the effectiveness of the detector calibration, in time, position and orientation and the accuracy of the event direction reconstruction. This also demonstrates the performance and the competitiveness of the detector in terms of pointing accuracy and angular resolution.

Abstract: Abstract In the era of precision measurements of the neutrino oscillation parameters, upcoming neutrino experiments will also be sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. KM3NeT/ORCA is a neutrino detector optimised for measuring atmospheric neutrinos from a few GeV to around 100 GeV. In this paper, the sensitivity of the KM3NeT/ORCA detector to neutrino decay has been explored. A three-flavour neutrino oscillation scenario, where the third neutrino mass state ν 3 decays into an invisible state, e.g. a sterile neutrino, is considered. We find that KM3NeT/ORCA would be sensitive to invisible neutrino decays with 1/α 3 = τ 3 /m 3 < 180 ps/eV at 90% confidence level, assuming true normal ordering. Finally, the impact of neutrino decay on the precision of KM3NeT/ORCA measurements for θ 23, Δ m 31 2 $$ \Delta {m}_{31}^2 $$ and mass ordering have been studied. No significant effect of neutrino decay on the sensitivity to these measurements has been found.

Abstract: Abstract The KM3NeT research infrastructure is unconstruction in the Mediterranean Sea. KM3NeT will study atmospheric and astrophysical neutrinos with two multi-purpose neutrino detectors, ARCA and ORCA, primarily aimed at GeV–PeV neutrinos. Thanks to the multi-photomultiplier tube design of the digital optical modules, KM3NeT is capable of detecting the neutrino burst from a Galactic or near-Galactic core-collapse supernova. This potential is already exploitable with the first detection units deployed in the sea. This paper describes the real-time implementation of the supernova neutrino search, operating on the two KM3NeT detectors since the first months of 2019. A quasi-online astronomy analysis is introduced to study the time profile of the detected neutrinos for especially significant events. The mechanism of generation and distribution of alerts, as well as the integration into the SNEWS and SNEWS 2.0 global alert systems, are described. The approach for the follow-up of external alerts with a search for a neutrino excess in the archival data is defined. Finally, an overview of the current detector capabilities and a report after the first two years of operation are given.

Abstract: Abstract This article presents the potential of a combined analysis of the JUNO and KM3NeT/ORCA experiments to determine the neutrino mass ordering. This combination is particularly interesting as it significantly boosts the potential of either detector, beyond simply adding their neutrino mass ordering sensitivities, by removing a degeneracy in the determination of ∆ m 31 2 $$ {m}_{31}^2 $$ between the two experiments when assuming the wrong ordering. The study is based on the latest projected performances for JUNO, and on simulation tools using a full Monte Carlo approach to the KM3NeT/ORCA response with a careful assessment of its energy systematics. From this analysis, a 5σ determination of the neutrino mass ordering is expected after 6 years of joint data taking for any value of the oscillation parameters. This sensitivity would be achieved after only 2 years of joint data taking assuming the current global best-fit values for those parameters for normal ordering.

Abstract: Abstract The next generation of water Cherenkov neutrino telescopes in the Mediterranean Sea are under construction offshore France (KM3NeT/ORCA) and Sicily (KM3NeT/ARCA). The KM3NeT/ORCA detector features an energy detection threshold which allows to collect atmospheric neutrinos to study flavour oscillation. This paper reports the KM3NeT/ORCA sensitivity to this phenomenon. The event reconstruction, selection and classification are described. The sensitivity to determine the neutrino mass ordering was evaluated and found to be 4.4 $$\sigma $$ σ if the true ordering is normal and 2.3 $$\sigma $$ σ if inverted, after 3 years of data taking. The precision to measure $$\varDelta m^2_{32}$$ Δ m 32 2 and $$\theta _{23}$$ θ 23 were also estimated and found to be $$85 . 10^{-6}~{\mathrm{eV}^{2}}$$ 85 . 10 - 6 eV 2 and $$(^{+1.9}_{-3.1})^{\circ }$$ ( - 3.1 + 1.9 ) ∘ for normal neutrino mass ordering and, $$75 . 10^{-6}~{\mathrm{eV}^{2}}$$ 75 . 10 - 6 eV 2 and $$(^{+2.0}_{-7.0})^{\circ }$$ ( - 7.0 + 2.0 ) ∘ for inverted ordering. Finally, a unitarity test of the leptonic mixing matrix by measuring the rate of tau neutrinos is described. Three years of data taking were found to be sufficient to exclude event rate variations larger than 20% at $$3\sigma $$ 3 σ level.

Abstract: Abstract The capture of scintillation light emitted by liquid Argon and Xenon under molecular excitations by charged particles is still a challenging task. Here we present a first attempt to design a device able to have a sufficiently high photon detection efficiency, in order to reconstruct the path of ionizing particles. The study is based on the use of masks to encode the light signal combined with single-photon detectors, showing the capability to detect tracks over focal distances of about tens of centimeters. From numerical simulations it emerges that it is possible to successfully decode and recognize signals, even of rather complex topology, with a relatively limited number of acquisition channels. Thus, the main aim is to elucidate a proof of principle of a technology developed in very different contexts, but which has potential applications in liquid argon detectors that require a fast reading. The findings support us to think that such innovative technique could be very fruitful in a new generation of detectors devoted to neutrino physics.

Abstract: Abstract KM3NeT/ORCA is a next-generation neutrino telescope optimised for atmospheric neutrino oscillations studies. In this paper, the sensitivity of ORCA to the presence of a light sterile neutrino in a 3+1 model is presented. After three years of data taking, ORCA will be able to probe the active-sterile mixing angles θ 14, θ 24, θ 34 and the effective angle θ μe , over a broad range of mass squared difference ∆ m 41 2 $$ \Delta {m}_{41}^2 $$ ∼ [10 −5 , 10] eV2, allowing to test the eV-mass sterile neutrino hypothesis as the origin of short baseline anomalies, as well as probing the hypothesis of a very light sterile neutrino, not yet constrained by cosmology. ORCA will be able to explore a relevant fraction of the parameter space not yet reached by present measurements.

Abstract: Abstract The KM3NeT research infrastructure is under construction in the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of two water Cherenkov neutrino detectors, ARCA and ORCA, aimed at neutrino astrophysics and oscillation research, respectively. Instrumenting a large volume of sea water with $$\sim {6200}$$ ∼ 6200 optical modules comprising a total of $$\sim {200{,}000}$$ ∼ 200 , 000 photomultiplier tubes, KM3NeT will achieve sensitivity to $$\sim {10} \ \mathrm{MeV}$$ ∼ 10 MeV neutrinos from Galactic and near-Galactic core-collapse supernovae through the observation of coincident hits in photomultipliers above the background. In this paper, the sensitivity of KM3NeT to a supernova explosion is estimated from detailed analyses of background data from the first KM3NeT detection units and simulations of the neutrino signal. The KM3NeT observational horizon (for a $$5\,\sigma $$ 5 σ discovery) covers essentially the Milky-Way and for the most optimistic model, extends to the Small Magellanic Cloud ( $$\sim {60} \ \mathrm{kpc}$$ ∼ 60 kpc ). Detailed studies of the time profile of the neutrino signal allow assessment of the KM3NeT capability to determine the arrival time of the neutrino burst with a few milliseconds precision for sources up to 5–8 kpc away, and detecting the peculiar signature of the standing accretion shock instability if the core-collapse supernova explosion happens closer than 3–5 kpc, depending on the progenitor mass. KM3NeT’s capability to measure the neutrino flux spectral parameters is also presented.

13. Exploring the astrophysical energy range of the 27Al(p,α)24Mg reaction: A new recommended reaction rate

Abstract: The 26Al abundance holds a special role in present-day astrophysics, since it is a probe of active nucleosynthesis in the Galaxy and a valuable constraint of Galactic core-collapse supernovae rate. It is estimated through the detection of the 1809-keV γ-line of the daughter 26Mg and from the superabundance of 26Mg in comparison with the most abundant 24Mg isotope in meteorites. Accurate knowledge of the reaction rates involving 26Al, its stable counterpart 27Al and 24Mg is then mandatory. Moreover, these nuclei enter the MgAl cycle playing an important role in the production of Al and Mg isotopes. Recently, high-resolution stellar surveys have shown that the Mg-Al anti-correlation in red giants of globular clusters may hide the existence of multiple stellar populations, and that the relative abundances of Mg isotopes may not show correlation with Al.The common thread running through these astrophysical scenarios is the 27Al(p,α)24Mg reaction, which is the main 27Al destruction channel and directly correlates its abundance with the 24Mg one. Since available reaction rates show an order of magnitude uncertainty owing to the vanishingly small cross section at astrophysical energies, we have applied the Trojan Horse Method to deduce the reaction rate with no need of extrapolation. The indirect measurement made it possible to assess the contribution of the 84-keV resonance and to lower the upper limits on the strength of nearby resonances, with potential important impact for astrophysics. In particular, modifications in the 27Al and 24Mg abundances up to ∼30% are predicted for intermediate mass stars.

Abstract: Abstract KM3NeT is a research infrastructure located in the Mediterranean Sea, that will consist of two deep-sea Cherenkov neutrino detectors. With one detector (ARCA), the KM3NeT Collaboration aims at identifying and studying TeV–PeV astrophysical neutrino sources. With the other detector (ORCA), the neutrino mass ordering will be determined by studying GeV-scale atmospheric neutrino oscillations. The first KM3NeT detection units were deployed at the Italian and French sites between 2015 and 2017. In this paper, a description of the detector is presented, together with a summary of the procedures used to calibrate the detector in-situ. Finally, the measurement of the atmospheric muon flux between 2232–3386 m seawater depth is obtained.

Abstract: The detection of the neutrinos produced in the p−p chain and in the CNO cycle can be used to test the Standard Solar Model. The 3He(α,γ)7Be reaction is the first reaction of the 2nd and 3rd branch of the p−p chain, therefore, the uncertainty of its cross section sensitively influences the prediction of the 7Be and 8B neutrino fluxes. Despite its importance and the large number of experimental and theoretical works devoted to this reaction, the knowledge on the reaction cross section at energies characterizing the core of the Sun (15 keV - 30 keV) is limited and further experimental efforts are needed to reach the desired (≈ 3%) accuracy. The precise knowledge on the external capture contribution to the 3He(α,γ)7Be reaction cross section is crucial for the theoretical description of the reaction mechanism. In the present work the indirect measurement of this external capture contribution using the Asymptotic Normalization Coefficient (ANC) technique is reported. To extract the ANC, the angular distributions of deuterons emitted in the 6Li(3He,d)7Be α-transfer reaction were measured with high precision at EH3e = 3.0 MeV and EH3e = 5.0 MeV. The ANCs were then extracted from comparison of DWBA calculations to the measured data and the zero energy astrophysical S-factor for 3He(α,γ)7Be reaction was found to be 0.534 ± 0.025 keVb.

Abstract: Abstract Studying atmospheric neutrino oscillations in the few-GeV range with a multi-megaton detector promises to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy. This is the main science goal pursued by the future KM3NeT/ORCA water Cherenkov detector in the Mediterranean Sea. In this paper, the processes that limit the obtainable resolution in both energy and direction in charged-current neutrino events in the ORCA detector are investigated. These processes include the composition of the hadronic fragmentation products, the subsequent particle propagation and the photon-sampling fraction of the detector. GEANT simulations of neutrino interactions in seawater produced by GENIE are used to study the effects in the 1-20 GeV range. It is found that fluctuations in the hadronic cascade in conjunction with the variation of the inelasticity y are most detrimental to the resolutions. The effect of limited photon sampling in the detector is of significantly less importance. These results will therefore also be applicable to similar detectors/media, such as those in ice.

Abstract: A radioactive ion beam of 6He produced via the 7Li(p,2p)6He reaction with typical intensity of 3 × 106 ions/see was elastically scattered from LiF(Au) targets. Elastic scattering of 6He at Elab=27 MeV with 197Au have been measured in the angular range of 6º-72º in the laboratory system employing LEDA and LAMP detection system. Optical Model calculations have been used to fit the data .

Abstract: 12C +12 C is the main reaction during core and shell carbon burning in massive stars, however, at temperatures higher than 109K when most of the carbon is depleted and its abundance is lower than 16O, the 12C +16 O fusion can also become relevant. Moreover, 12C +16 O reaction can ignite also in the scenario of explosive carbon burning. The astrophysical energy region of interest thus ranges from 3 to 7.2 MeV in the center-of-mass frame. There are various measurements of the cross-section available in the literature, however, they all stop around 4 MeV, making extrapolation necessary at lower energies. To try to solve this uncertainty and corroborate direct measurement the Trojan Horse Method was applied to three-body processes 16O(14N, α24Mg)2H and 16O(14N, p27Al)2H to study the 16O(12C, α)24Mg and 16O(12C, p)27Al reactions.

Abstract: With the aim of improving our knowledge about their nature, we conduct a comparative study on a sample of long-rising Type II supernovae (SNe) resembling SN 1987A. To do so, we deduce various scaling relations from different analytic models of H-rich SNe, discussing their robustness and feasibility. Then we use the best relations in terms of accuracy to infer the SN progenitor's physical properties at the explosion for the selected sample of SN 1987A-like objects, deriving energies of $\sim 0.5$-$15$ foe, radii of $\sim 0.2$-$100 \times 10^{12}$ cm, and ejected masses of $\sim 15$-$55$\msun. Although the sample may be too small to draw any final conclusion, these results suggest that (a) SN 1987A-like objects have parameters at explosion covering a wide range of values; (b) the main parameter determining their distribution is the explosion energy; (c) a high-mass ($\gtrsim 30$\,\Msun), high-energy ($\gtrsim 10$\,foe) tail of events, linked to extended progenitors with radii at explosion $\sim 10^{13}$-$10^{14}$\,cm, challenge standard theories of neutrino-driven core-collapse and stellar evolution. We also find a correlation between the amount of $^{56}$Ni in the ejecta of the SN 1987A-like objects and the spectrophotometric features of the SN at maximum, that may represent a tool for estimating the amount of $^{56}$Ni in the SN ejecta whitout having information on the tail luminosity., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, and 2 appendices, accepted for publication on MNRAS

Abstract: The optical data transport system of the KM3NeT neutrino telescope at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea will provide more than 6000 optical modules in the detector arrays with a point-to-point optical connection to the control stations onshore. The ARCA and ORCA detectors of KM3NeT are being installed at a depth of about 3500m and 2500 m, respectively and their distance to the control stations is about 100 kilometers and 40 kilometers. In particular, the two detectors are optimised for the detection of cosmic neutrinos with energies above about 1 TeV (ARCA) and for the detection of atmospheric neutrinos with energies in the range 1 GeV–1 TeV (ORCA). The expected maximum data rate is 200 Mbps per optical module. The implemented optical data transport system matches the layouts of the networks of electro-optical cables and junction boxes in the deep sea. For efficient use of the fibres in the system the technology of Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing is applied. The performance of the optical system in terms of measured bit error rates, optical budget are presented. Abstract: Astrophysical reactions involving radioactive isotopes (RI) often play an important role in high-temperature stellar environments. The experimental studies on the reaction rates for those are still limited mainly due to the technical difficulties in producing high-quality RI beams. A direct measurement of those reactions would be still challenging in many cases, however, we can make a reliable evaluation of the reaction rates by an indirect method or by studying the resonance prorerties. Here we ntroduce recent examples of experimental studies on such RI-involving astrophysical reactions, performed at Center for Nuclear Study, the University of Tokyo, using the low-energy RI beam separator CRIB. One is for the neutron-induced destruction reactions of 7Be in the Big-Bang nucleosynthesis, and the other is the study on the 22Mg(α, p) reaction relevant in X-ray bursts, which was performed with the resonant scattering method from the inverse reaction channel.

Abstract: The carbon-burning process in massive stars mainly occurs via the 12C +12 C. However, at temperatures higher than 109K and considering the increased abundance of 16O produced during the later stages of the heliumburning,the 12C+16O fusion can also become relevant. Moreover, 12C+16O also plays a role in the scenario of explosive carbon burning. Thus, the astrophysical energy region of interest ranges from 3 to 7.2 MeV in the center-of-mass frame. However, the various measurements of the cross-section available in the literature stop around 4 MeV, making extrapolation necessary. To solve this uncertainty and corroborate direct measurement we applied the Trojan Horse Method to three-body processes 16O(14N, α24Mg)2H and 16O(14N, p27Al)2H to study the 12C(16O, α)24Mg and 12C(16O, p)27Al reactions in their entire energy region of astrophysical interest. In this contribution, after briefly describing the method used, the experiment and the preliminary phases of the data analysis will be presented and discussed.

28. P409 MYOCARDITIS OR RHABDOMYOLYSIS WITH MYOCYTE NECROSIS?

Abstract: Rhabdomyolysis is a clinical syndrome involving skeletal muscle tissue characterized by muscle weakness, myalgias and increased creatine phosphokinase (CPK) levels, usually 5 times up the normal limit. During rhabdomyolysis troponin (TNI) may be released due to mismatch between oxygen supply and demand, cytokine and endotoxin toxicity, presence of heterophile antibodies that cause false positive results and cross–reactivity between TNI isoforms produced by skeletal muscle and TNI isoforms produced by cardiac muscle. The triggering causes are multiple and include viral infections and genetic pathologies involving skeletal muscles. Genetic mutations of filamin C can cause myofibrillar myopathies, a heterogeneous group of neuromuscular disorders characterized by myopathy involving proximal and distal muscles that often occur in adulthood and may be associated with cardiomyopathies. Genetic mutations of filamin C can also be found in healthy adults because some variants have a subclinical expression. Case Report A 34 years old man came to the Emergency Department (ED) with fever, diarrhoea, asthenia and anuria. His past medical history was characterized by 4 episodes of myocarditis (TNI value increased up to 21 ng/dl, reduced left ventricular ejection fraction to 40%) all occurring in conjunction with acute gastroenteritis. The genetic analysis, performed six months before, showed a heterozygous mutation of the gene coding for filamin C. Blood tests performed in ED showed an increase in CRP values (4.8mg/dl), in transaminases values and a modest increase in troponin values (0.96ng/dl) without electrocardiographic and echocardiographic abnormalities (ejection fraction was preserved). He was admitted to Emergency Cardiology Department with a diagnosis of myocarditis. The CPK value resulted to be 22.503 U/l (n.v. 60 –190 U/l). Cardiac MRI underlined no signs of acute myocarditis. The patient, treated with intravenous fluid therapy, after one week showed clinical improvement and normalization of CPK and TNI values. Conclusions in the present case the acute gastrointestinal event was the trigger of rhabdomyolysis and not of an acute myocarditis as initially erroneously interpreted, in a patient carrying a genetic mutation predisposing to myopathies. Follow–up will evaluate whether and to what extent the genetic abnormality will lead to the development of myopathy and/or cardiomyopathy.

Abstract: International audience; The French nuclear community is highly active in the field of earthquake engineering and more precisely, regarding seismic risk assessment. Among the existing safety-oriented frameworks, there is one which involves not only nuclear operators such as Electricité de France (EDF), the French Sustainable Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) and FRAMATOME, but also the French technical support organization which is the Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN). Within this framework, research activities are conducted, aiming to enhance knowledge in order to improve nuclear safety of either existing or new facilities. These activities deal with topics and challenging issues that appear to be significant in the seismic risk assessment process. More precisely, they aim to better assess the seismic margins when available, to better understand the beyond-design behavior of nuclear buildings or related equipment and to improve the necessary knowledge to produce robust seismic hazard assessment studies. The main objective of this paper is to give an overview of the past, ongoing, and future joint activities carried out by CEA-EDF-FRAMATOME-IRSN and will especially highlight main findings and future challenges and opportunities in the field of seismic safety of nuclear facilities. To reach the objective, technical focus will be made during the presentation.

Abstract: A new mathematical framework is proposed for characterizing the coherent motion of fluctuations around a mean turbulent channel flow. We search for statistically invariant coherent solutions of the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations written in a perturbative form with respect to the turbulent mean flow, using a suitable approximation of the Reynolds stress tensor. This is achieved by setting up a continuation procedure of known solutions of the perturbative Navier–Stokes equations, based on the continuous increase of the turbulent eddy viscosity towards its turbulent value. The recovered solutions, being sustained only in the presence of the Reynolds stress tensor, are representative of the statistically coherent motion of turbulent flows. For small friction Reynolds number and/or domain size, the statistically invariant motion is almost identical to the corresponding invariant solution of the Navier–Stokes equations. Whereas, for sufficiently large friction number and/or domain size, it considerably departs from the starting invariant solution of the Navier–Stokes equations, presenting spatial structures, main wavelengths and scaling very close to those characterizing both large- and small-scale motion of turbulent channel flows. 31. P223 THYROTOXIC DILATED CARDIOMYOPATHY

Abstract: Hyperthyroidism can strongly impact cardiac function. Thyrotoxicosis enhances myocardiocytes metabolism and it can be responsible for hyperdynamic circulation state leading to heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, but also left ventricle dilatation and severe contractile function impairment. It can furthermore provoke arrhythmias, mostly atrial fibrillation, but, as we are going to discuss in this case, even ventricular arrhythmias. A 40–year–old woman came to our emergency department for chest pain. ECG showed reduced R waves voltage in precordial leads and troponin I values were normal. The echocardiogram showed severe left ventricle disfunction with global hypokinesia (EF 35%) and enlarged left ventricle (LVEDD 65 mm). Blood tests revealed severe hyperthyroidism with extremely low level of TSH, FT3 13,45 pg/ml, FT4 3,4 ng/ml and thyroid echography documented multiple solid nodular formations with hypo–isoechogenic signal. She underwent a coronary angiography that showed patent coronary arteries, and a cardiac magnetic resonance confirming severe contractile impairment and hypertrabeculation of the apex and lateral wall. On the assumption of a dilated cardiomyopathy secondary to hyperthyroidism, we started treatment with methimazole, ACE inhibitors and propranolol. During hospitalization, continuous ECG monitoring recorded several episodes of non–sustained ventricular tachycardia, the longest lasting 22 seconds, so the patient was discharged with a wearable cardioverter–defibrillator. It did not record any arrhythmias and it was dismissed a month later. After almost two months of therapy, the echocardiogram showed mild left ventricular contractility improvement (EF 45%), and blood tests documented partial reduction of hyperthyroidism. A 24–hour ECG Holter did not record any arrhythmias and the patient remained asymptomatic during all the period after discharge. Even if rare, scientific literature confirms that dilated cardiomyopathy with reduced ejection fraction can occur as a complication of hyperthyroidism. After the exclusion of an ischemic cause, we underline the need for adequate initiation of treatments for thyrotoxicosis and heart failure, in order to improve chance of left ventricular function recovery. In the case discussed, after two months of therapy, EF was still not completely restored but improved from 35% to 45%, and concurrently arrhythmic risk did clearly decrease.

32. P376 INTRACAVITARY ABLATION OF PARASYMPATHETIC ATRIAL GANGLIONATED PLEXUS, A NEW APPROACH FOR SINUS BRADYCARDIA IN YOUNG PATIENTS

Abstract: Sinus bradycardia might be a severe clinical problem, if symptomatic pacemaker implantation is needed. In younger patients this will lead to several battery changes, higher infectious risk and psychological issues. When sinus bradycardia seems related to vagal hypertone, intracavitary ablation of atrial ganglionated plexus has recently been proposed as an alternative to pacemaker implantation in symptomatic younger patients. A 44–year–old patient was admitted to the emergency department for lipothymia and fatigue. The ECG showed marked sinus bradycardia with a heart rate of 35 bpm and continuous ECG monitoring revealed episodes of Mobitz I second degree AV block and 2:1 AV block. The transthoracic echocardiography was normal. In order to reduce the effect of vagal hypertone on the heart, catheter ablation of parasympathetic atrial ganglionated plexus was performed. In the right atrium the electrophysiological study showed fragmented potentials near caval vein openings and coronary sinus osthium, while in the left atrium these were found in the posterior wall close to the pulmonary veins and near the left part of coronary sinus. Catheter stimulation of these zones determined asystolic pauses and induction of atrial fibrillation with spontaneous resolution. Catheter radio–frequency ablation was performed, at the end of the procedure increase of heart rate at 70 bpm was observed and atrial fibrillation was no more inducible during pacing. Atrioventricular Wenckebach point recorded before the procedure was 730 ms and it passed to 430 ms. At continuous ECG monitoring the heart rate remained higher than 65 bpm all over the hospitalization, without any other meaningful arrhythmias. Ablation of parasympathetic atrial ganglionated plexus is still an experimental technique but it is proving to be very interesting and promising. In the case we described the patient took a real advantage from the procedure that was measurable both with the improve of heart rate and reduction of Wenckebach point. During the procedure we associated the site of fragmented potentials with the position of each plexus; stimulation of these sites evocated a strong vagal response, confirming that fragmented potentials can be used to localize the plexus. Some authors affirmed that ablation only on right atrium might be sufficient; however, we preferred to ablate in both atria in order to make the procedure more effective. More studies are needed to identify the correct site.

33. Linear and nonlinear optimal growth mechanisms for generating turbulent bands

Abstract: Recently, many authors have investigated the origin and growth of turbulent bands in shear flows, highlighting the role of streaks and their inflectional instability in the process of band generation and sustainment. Recalling that streaks are created by an optimal transient growth mechanism, and motivated by the observation of a strong increase of the disturbance kinetic energy corresponding to the creation of turbulent bands, we use linear and nonlinear energy optimisations in a tilted domain to unveil the main mechanisms allowing the creation of a turbulent band in a channel flow. Linear transient growth analysis shows an optimal growth for wavenumbers having an angle of approximately$35^\circ$, close to the peak values of the premultiplied energy spectra of direct numerical simulations. This linear optimal perturbation generates oblique streaks, which, for a sufficiently large initial energy, induce turbulence in the whole domain, due to the lack of spatial localisation. However, spatially localised perturbations obtained by adding nonlinear effects to the optimisation or by artificially confining the linear optimal to a localised region in the transverse direction are characterised by a large-scale flow and lead to the generation of a localised turbulent band. These results suggest that two main elements are needed for inducing turbulent bands in a tilted domain: (i) a linear energy growth mechanism, such as the lift-up, for generating large-amplitude flow structures, which produce inflection points; (ii) spatial localisation, linked to the presence or generation of large-scale vortices. We show that these elements alone generate isolated turbulent bands also in large non-tilted domains.

Abstract: Neutrino scattering on nuclei embedded in the hot and dense matter typical of the core collapse of supernovae, neutron star mergers, and proto-neutron stars, is studied. At finite temperatures, neutrinos experience exo- and endo-energy scattering on nuclei due to the Gamow–Teller component of a neutral current. It is shown that the average transfer of energy due to neutrino–nucleus scattering changes from positive to negative values at neutrino energies around four times higher than the temperature of the matter.

35. Minimal energy thresholds for sustained turbulent bands in channel flow

Abstract: In this work, nonlinear variational optimization is used for obtaining minimal seeds for the formation of turbulent bands in channel flow. Using nonlinear optimization together with energy bisection, we have found that the minimal energy threshold for obtaining spatially patterned turbulence scales with$Re^{-8.5}$for$Re>1000$. The minimal seed, which is different to that found in a much smaller domain, is characterized by a spot-like structure surrounded by a low-amplitude large-scale quadrupolar flow filling the whole domain. This minimal-energy perturbation of the laminar flow has dominant wavelengths close to$4$in the streamwise direction and$1$in the spanwise direction, and is characterized by a spatial localization increasing with the Reynolds number. At$Re \lesssim 1200$, the minimal seed evolves in time, creating an isolated oblique band, whereas for$Re\gtrsim 1200$, a quasi-spanwise-symmetric evolution is observed, giving rise to two distinct bands. A similar evolution is found also at low$Re$for non-minimal optimal perturbations. This highlights two different mechanisms of formation of turbulent bands in channel flow, depending on the Reynolds number and initial energy of the perturbation. The selection of one of these two mechanisms appears to be dependent on the probability of decay of the newly created stripe, which increases with time, but decreases with the Reynolds number.

Abstract: Experimental studies on astrophysical reactions involving radioactive isotopes (RI) often accompany technical challenges. Studies on such nuclear reactions have been conducted at the low-energy RI beam separator CRIB, operated by Center for Nuclear Study, the University of Tokyo. We discuss two cases of astrophysical reaction studies at CRIB; one is for the 7Be+n reactions which may affect the primordial 7Li abundance in the Big-Bang nucleosynthesis, and the other is for the 22Mg(α, p) reaction relevantin X-raybursts.

Abstract: The abundance of 26Al carries a special role in astrophysics, since it probes active nucleosynthesis in the Milky Way and constrains the Galactic core-collapse supernovae rate. It is estimated through the detection of the 1809 keV γ-line and from the superabundance of 26Mg in comparison with the most abundant Mg isotope (A = 24) in meteorites. For this reason, high precision is necessary also in the investigation of the stable 27Al and 24Mg isotopes. Moreover, these nuclei enter the so-called MgAl cycle, playing an important role in the production of Al and Mg. Recently, high-resolution stellar surveys have shown that the Mg–Al anticorrelation in red-giant stars in globular clusters may hide the existence of multiple stellar populations, and that the relative abundances of Mg isotopes may not be correlated with Al. The common thread running through these astrophysical scenarios is the 27Al(p,α)24Mg reaction, which is the main 27Al destruction channel and directly correlates its abundance with the 24Mg one. Since available reaction rates show large uncertainties owing to the vanishingly small cross section at astrophysical energies, we have applied the Trojan Horse Method to deduce the reaction rate with no need of extrapolation. The indirect measurement made it possible to assess the contribution of the 84 keV resonance and to lower upper limits on the strength of nearby resonances. In intermediate-mass AGB stars experiencing hot bottom burning, a sizeable increase in surface aluminum abundance is observed at the lowest masses, while 24Mg is essentially unaffected by the change in the reaction rate.

Abstract: Background: The Li 6 ( p , γ ) Be 7 cross section influences a variety of astrophysical scenarios, including big-bang and stellar nucleosynthesis. In recent years, conflicting results of direct measurements have been published, reporting contradictory low-energy trends. Purpose: To shed light on the contradiction between the existing data sets, the reaction was studied using the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) technique which was up-to-now never used for this reaction. Methods: To derive the ANC, the Li 6 ( He 3 , d ) Be 7 transfer reaction, studied at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Catania and at the John. D. Fox Superconducting Accelerator Laboratory at Florida State University, was re-analyzed, focusing on the proton transfer mechanism [the α transfer process is discussed by Kiss et al. [Phys. Lett. B 807, 135606 (2020)]. The energy of the He 3 beam impinging on a Li 6 target was E lab = 3 MeV and E lab = 5 MeV. The yield of the emitted deuterons was measured with high precision by using silicon Δ E - E telescopes. Results: From the DWBA analysis of the angular distributions of the emitted deuterons populating the ground ( E * = 0.0 MeV; 3 2 − ) and the first excited ( E * = 0.429 MeV ; 1 2 − ) states of Be 7 , the ANCs for the Li 6 + p → Be 7 system were deduced. Furthermore, the recently measured Li 6 ( p , γ ) Be 7 reaction cross sections [Piatti , Phys. Rev. C 102, 052802 (2020)] were also analyzed within this theoretical framework. Excellent agreement was found between ANC values derived indirectly and those determined from the direct data, which strengthens the conclusion of the present work. The astrophysical S factor—at energies characterizing the Sun—for the Li 6 ( p , γ ) Be 7 reaction was calculated using the weighted mean of the experimentally derived ANC values. Conclusions: The result of the present comprehensive study supports the extrapolation of Piatti [Phys. Rev. C 102, 052802 (2020)], Dong [J. Phys. G Nucl. Partic. 44, 045201 (2017)], and Gnech and Marcucci [Nucl. Phys. A 987, 1 (2019)], and thus disfavors the conclusions drawn by He [Phys. Lett. B 725, 287 (2013)] and Xu [Nucl. Phys. A 918, 61 (2013)].

Abstract: Neutron induced reactions are fundamental for the nucleosynthesis of elements in the universe. Indeed, to correctly study the reactions involved in the well-known s-process in stars, which produce about half of the elements beyond the iron peak, it is mandatory to know the neutron abundance available in those stars. The 17O(n, a)14C reaction is one of the so-called “neutron poisons” for the pro- cess and it could play an important role in the balance of the neutron abundance. The reaction is therefore investigated in the energy range of astrophysical inter- est between 0 and 350 keV in the center of mass by applying the Trojan Horse Method to the three body reaction 2H(17O, a14C)H.

Abstract: We present preliminary data of elastic scattering and inclusive breakup cross sections for the 7Li+ 119Sn reaction, recently measured at the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS-INFN) (Catania, Italy) at energies around the Coulomb barrier (E lab = 21.2 and 26.5 MeV). The experimental data have been analyzed under the Optical Model and Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels methods.

Abstract: The use of the Trojan Horse Method (THM) appears as one of the most suitable tools for investigating nuclear processes of interest for astrophysics. THM has been demonstrated to be useful for exploring different nuclear reactions intervening both in stellar and primordial nucleosynthesis as well. Some recent results will be here discussed together with a brief discussion of the fundamental theoretical description. General details about the recently studied 7Be(n,α)4He reaction will be given.

Abstract: The spectroscopy of F is of interest for nuclear astrophysics and nuclear structure. In these proceedings we will focus on the astrophysical implications and on the perspectives of the use of elastic scattering for the investigation of reactions of astrophysical importance. In astrophysics, fluorine and the reactions producing and destroying it play a key role in constraining models of stars in different evolutionary stages, such as the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, responsible of the production of about half of the elements heavier than Fe. Indeed, s-nuclei are produced and brought to the surface thanks to mixing phenomena, together with fluorine that is produced in the same region from the same neutron source. Since the last stage in fluorine nucleosynthesis is the N(α, γ) F radiative capture, the study of the N + α elastic scattering may cast light on the fluorine synthesis. Also, F states are responsible of the appearance of resonances in the O(p,α) N reaction, leading to the production of N, later burnt to F in AGB stars through α-captures. Finally, the F spectroscopy may help constraining nuclear properties of the radioactive mirror nucleus Ne, whose states play a key role in novae modeling through the F(p,α) O reaction. In this work, the N - α elastic scattering is studied using the thick target inverse kinematics approach, allowing us to span a very large fluorine excitation energy range (∼ 6 - 10 MeV). A R-matrix analysis of the measured differential cross sections was also carried out, making it possible to determine the spin-parity and widths of a number of F states, including some previously not reported in the literature.

Abstract: Type I X-ray bursts (XRBs) are the most frequently observed thermonuclear explosions in nature. The 22Mg(α,p)25Al reaction plays a critical role in XRB models. However, experimental information is insufficient to deduce a precise 22Mg(α,p)25Al reaction rate for the respective XRB temperature range. A new measurement of 25Al+p resonant scattring was performed up to the astrophysically interested energy region of 22Mg(α,p)25Al. Several resonances were observed in the excitation functions, and their level properties have been determined based on an R-matrix analysis. In particular, proton widths and spin-parities of four natural-parity resonances above the α threshold of 26Si, which can contribute the reaction rate of 22Mg(α,p)25Al, were ﬁrst experimentally determined.

Abstract: Owing the presence of the Coulomb barrier at astrophysically relevant kinetic energies, it is very difficult, or sometimes impossible to measure astrophysical reaction rates in laboratory. To overcome the problems related to the use of extrapolation procedure, the Trojan Horse Method (THM) has been applied extensively for the last 25 years to measure nuclear reaction cross sections of astrophysical interest. Although it has been mainly applied for charged particle-induced reactions, recently the THM has been found to have also a relevant role for neutron-induced ones. Here, the basic principle and a review of the main application of the Trojan Horse Method are presented, following a step-by-step description of the results concerning the study of the 17O(n,α)14C reaction.

49. First Time Measurement of the 19F(p,x1) 16O Reaction at Astrophysical Energies: Evidence of Resonances Through the Application of the Trojan Horse Method

Abstract: The $^{19}$F(p,$\alpha $)$^{16}$O reaction is an important channel of fluorine destruction in H-rich environments as the outer layers of Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars. Measurements of the $^{19}$F(p,$\alpha _0$)$^{16}$O reaction via the Trojan Horse Method (THM) have shown the presence of resonant structures not observed before. As a consequence, the reaction rate at astrophysical temperatures (about $10^{7}$–$10^{8}$ K) exceeds up to a factor 1.7 the one previously adopted. Here we present the result of an experiment in which THM was used to extract the Quasi-Free (QF) contribution of the $^{2}$H($^{19}$F,$\alpha $ $^{16}$O)n reaction to the $^{19}$F(p,$\alpha _1$)$^{16}$O channel, corresponding to the population of the first excited state of the $^{16}$O. Three resonances in the E$_{cm}$ energy region below about 500 keV have been observed. This result hints to an enhancement of the $^{19}$F(p,$\alpha $)$^{16}$O destruction rate, with respect to what presently predicted.

50. Neutron-induced reactions investigated via the Trojan Horse Method

Abstract: The Trojan Horse Method has been applied to many neutron-induced reactions using the deuteron as a virtual source of neutrons, to explore wide energy regions of interest for astrophysics and applied physics and to investigate the suppression of the centrifugal barrier, that is one of the key advantages of this Method. The neutron-induced experimental campaign has already concerned 17O(n, α)14C, 6Li(n,α)3H, 7Be(n,p)7Li, 7Be(n,α)4He, 18F(n,α)15O and 14N(n,p)14C, and very recently 25Mg(n,α)22Ne and 27Al(n,p)27Mg, while others are planned to be measured soon, thus influencing different astrophysical scenarios. Particular attention is dedicated to a new measurement regarding the 10B(n,α)7Li reaction, aimed to disentangle the 7Li ground state contribution from its first excited state to the cross section.
