1. Longitudinal Polarization of the Electrons from the Decay of Unpolarized Positive and Negative Muons

Abstract

The polarization of electrons from the decay of unpolarized positive and negative muons has been detected by the method of transmission of bremsstrahlung through magnetized iron. It is shown that the positrons have positive helicity and the negatrons negative helicity, thus providing a clear demonstration of violation of invariance under charge conjugation. It follows on the basis of the two component neutrino theory that the neutrino associated with the decay of the pion has negative helicity and the anti-neutrino positive helicity. The agreement of this with recent results for the neutrino in β-decay lends support to this theory and confirms the law of conservation of leptons.

3. The charge-exchange scattering of negative pions by protons at 96.6 MeV

Abstract

The angular distribution of γ rays from the charge-exchange scattering of 96.6 MeV negative pions by protons has been measured at 14 angles between 20° and 151.2°. The γ-ray detector utilized a lead converter and counter telescope. The correction for loss of electrons in the converter was determined experimentally and the calculated efficiency of the detector checked by direct measurement with a tagged beam of γ rays. Analysis of the distribution of γ rays yielded the following differential cross section for the charge-exchange scattering (mbn sterad-1 c.m.): dσ/dΩ=(0.694 ± 0.047) - (1.56 ± 0.05) cosθ + (1.89 ± 0.14) cos2θ Using previously determined values for the T = 3/2 phase shifts, those for the T = ½ state were found to be α1 = 8.28 ± 0.56°; α11 = -5.0 ± 1.1°; α13 = -0.23 ± 0.47°.

4. The scattering of positive pions by protons at 97.1 MeV

Abstract

The differential cross section for the scattering of 97.1 MeV positive pions by protons has been measured at fourteen angles between 36.3° and 164.1° in the centre-of-mass system. After the subtraction of first-order Coulomb effects the cross section is given (in mbn sterad-1) by dσ/dΩ=(2.873 ± 0.039) - (2.872 ± 0.057) cosθ + (5.08 ± 0.11) cos2θ The total cross section was measured by attenuation to be 56.1 ± 1.7 mbn. The values of the phase shifts uncorrected for D-wave or higher-order Coulomb effects were found to be α33 = 20.95 ± 0.32°, α31 = -2.24 ± 0.18°, α3 = -8.59 ± 0.23°. The magnitudes of the above corrections are discussed. These phase shifts were used, together with previous measurements of negative pion elastic scattering, to derive the following values for the T = ½ phase shifts at the same energy: α1 = 7.93 ± 0.42°, α11 = -1.90 ± 0.30°, α13 = -0.60 ± 0.30°.

5. The Elastic Scattering of 98 MeV Negative Pions by Hydrogen

Abstract

The elastic scattering by hydrogen of negative pions with mean energy 98 MeV has been measured at 13 angles between 30° and 150° (lab.). The pion beam was monitored with a calibrated ionization chamber and its muon and electron contamination determined by means of a Cerenkov counter. This counter was also used in the scattering telescope to separate out the electrons produced by charge exchange γ-radiation. The results were corrected for Coulomb effects and a 3-parameter curve fitted to the nuclear parts. The curve is dσ/dΩ = (1 ± 0.027) [0.385 ± 0.008 + (0.276 ± 0.015) cos θ + (0.282 ± 0.031) cos2 θ]. Thus the forward scattering intensity is 0.942 ± 0.043 mbn sterad-1. In a separate transmission experiment the total nuclear cross section for scattering of 98 MeV negative pions by hydrogen was found to be 21.9 ± 0.7 mbn. These two figures yield a value for the real part of the forward scattering amplitude D_ = 0.195 ± 0.006 in units h/mπc. The corresponding value of f2 from the dispersion relation is 0.073.

Abstract

IT is now well known that parity is not conserved in weak Fermi interactions, and that this generally results in longitudinal polarization of the spins of the emitted particles. Very strong polarizations of the muons emitted in pion decay1, and of the electrons emitted in beta decay2, have already been detected. The experiment reported here was aimed at detecting longitudinal polarization of the positrons emitted in the decay of unpolarized muons.

Abstract

The first observation of neutral pion production in π e inelastic scattering is presented. The cross section at 300 GeV for | t ‖>62;10 −3 (GeV / c ) 2 is 2.11 ± 0.47 nb, in good agreement with the theory of PCAC anomalies with 3 quark colours.

Abstract

The negative kaon electromagnetic form factor has been measured in the space-like q 2 range 0.015–0.10 (GeV/ c ) 2 by the direct scattering of 250 GeV kaons from electrons at the CERN SPS. It is found that the kaon mean square charge radius 〈 r 2 K 〉 = 0.34 ± 0.05 fm 2 . From data collected simultaneously for πe scattering, the difference between the charged pion and kaon mean square radii (which is less sensitive to systematic errors) is found to be 〈 r 2 π 〉 − 〈 r 2 K = 0.1 0 ± 0.045 fm 2 .

Abstract

The pion form factor has been measured in the space-like q 2 region 0.014 to 0.26 (GeV/ c ) 2 by scattering 300 GeV pions from the electrons of a liquid hydrogen target. A detailed description is given of the apparatus, data analysis and corrections to the data. The mean square charge radius extracted from the data is model-dependent. We find that a form which includes a realistic description of the form factor phase gives a similar results to the naive pole form, and conclude 〈r 2 π 〉 = 0.438±0.008 fm 2 .

The EM form factor of the pion has been studied in the time-like region by measuring σ(e+e− → π+π−) normalized to σ(e+e− → μ+μ−). Results have been obtained for q2 down to the physical threshold.
