1. Transition probabilities in 31P and 31S: A test for isospin symmetry

Abstract: Excited states in the mirror nuclei 31P and 31S were populated in the 1p and 1n exit channels of the reaction 20Ne + 12C, at a beam energy of 33 MeV. The 20Ne beam was delivered for the first time by the Piave-Alpi accelerator of the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. Angular correlations of coincident γ-rays and Doppler-shift attenuation lifetime measurements were performed using the multi-detector array GASP in conjunction with the EUCLIDES charged particle detector. In the observed B(E1) strengths, the isoscalar component, amounting to 24% of the isovector one, provides strong evidence for breaking of the isospin symmetry in the A=31 mass region. Self-consistent beyond mean field calculations using Equation of Motion method based on a chiral potential and including two- and three-body forces reproduce well the experimental B(E1) strengths, reinforcing our conclusion. Coherent mixing from higher-lying states involving the Giant Isovector Monopole Resonance accounts well for the effect observed. The breaking of the isospin symmetry originates from the violation of the charge symmetry of the two- and three-body parts of the potential, only related to the Coulomb interaction.

Abstract: Abstract This paper presents the energy dependence of multiplicity and net-electric charge fluctuations in p+p interactions at beam momenta 20, 31, 40, 80, and 158 $$\text{ Ge }\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text{ V }\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c . Results are corrected for the experimental biases and quantified with the use of cumulants and factorial cumulants. Cumulant ratios are an essential tool in the search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter in heavy ion collisions. Measurements performed in p+p interactions provide a vital baseline estimation in these studies. The measured signals are compared with the string hadronic models Epos1.99 and FTFP-BERT.

Abstract: Abstract The yields of $$K^0_S$$ K S 0 mesons have been measured in inelastic p+p interactions at incident projectile momenta of 31, 40 and 80 $$\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c ( $$\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7, 8.8$$ s NN = 7.7 , 8.8 and 12.3 $$\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}$$ Ge V , respectively). The data were recorded by the NA61 $$/$$ / SHINE spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron and the $$K^0_S$$ K S 0 mesons identified via their decays into $$\pi ^{+} \pi ^{-}$$ π + π - pairs. Double-differential distributions are presented as function of transverse momentum and rapidity. The mean multiplicities of $$K^0_S$$ K S 0 mesons were determined to be $$(5.95 \pm 0.19 (stat) \pm 0.30 (sys)) \times 10^{-2}$$ ( 5.95 ± 0.19 ( s t a t ) ± 0.30 ( s y s ) ) × 10 - 2 at 31 $$\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c , $$(7.61 \pm 0.13 (stat) \pm 0.43 (sys)) \times 10^{-2}$$ ( 7.61 ± 0.13 ( s t a t ) ± 0.43 ( s y s ) ) × 10 - 2 at 40 $$\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c and $$(11.58 \pm 0.12 (stat) \pm 0.55 (sys)) \times 10^{-2}$$ ( 11.58 ± 0.12 ( s t a t ) ± 0.55 ( s y s ) ) × 10 - 2 at 80 $$\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c . The results on $$K^{0}_{S}$$ K S 0 production are compared with the production of charged kaons in corresponding reactions and with model calculations (Epos1.99, SMASH 2.0 and PHSD) as well as with published data from other experiments.

Abstract: Abstract The critical point of strongly interacting matter is searched for at the CERN SPS by the NA61/SHINE experiment in central $$^{40}$$ 40 Ar + $$^{45}$$ 45 Sc collisions at 13 A, 19 A, 30 A, 40 A, and 75 A GeV/c. The dependence of the second-order scaled factorial moments of proton multiplicity distributions on the number of subdivisions in transverse momentum space is measured. The intermittency analysis uses statistically independent data sets for every subdivision in transverse and cumulative-transverse momentum variables. The results obtained do not indicate the searched intermittent pattern. An upper limit on the fraction of correlated protons and the intermittency index is obtained based on a comparison with the Power-law Model.

Abstract: Abstract The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron studies the onset of deconfinement in strongly interacting matter through a beam energy scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei of varied sizes. This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and mean multiplicities of $$\pi ^\pm $$ π ± , $$K^\pm $$ K ± , p and $$\bar{p}$$ p ¯ produced in $$^{40}\hbox {Ar+}^{45}\hbox {Sc}$$ 40 Ar+ 45 Sc collisions at beam momenta of 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A $$\text{ Ge }\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text{ V }\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c . The analysis uses the 10% most central collisions, where the observed forward energy defines centrality. The energy dependence of the $$K^\pm $$ K ± / $$\pi ^\pm $$ π ± ratios as well as of inverse slope parameters of the $$K^\pm $$ K ± transverse mass distributions are placed in between those found in inelastic $$p+p$$ p + p and central Pb + Pb collisions. The results obtained here establish a system-size dependence of hadron production properties that so far cannot be explained either within statistical or dynamical models.

Abstract: Abstract This paper reports measurements of two-pion femtoscopic correlations in Be+Be collisions at a beam momentum of 150 $$A\,\hbox {GeV}\!/\!c$$ A GeV / c (energy available in the center-of-mass system for nucleon pair $$\sqrt{s_{\text {NN}}} = 16.84$$ s NN = 16.84 GeV) by the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS accelerator. The obtained momentum space correlation functions can be well described by a Lévy distributed source model. The transverse mass dependence of the Lévy source parameters is presented, and their possible theoretical interpretations are discussed. The results show that the Lévy exponent $$\alpha $$ α is approximately constant as a function of $$m_{\text {T}}$$ m T , and far from both the Gaussian case of $$\alpha = 2$$ α = 2 or the conjectured value at the critical endpoint, $$\alpha = 0.5$$ α = 0.5 . The radius scale parameter R shows a slight decrease in $$m_{\text {T}}$$ m T , which can be explained as a signature of transverse flow. Finally, an approximately constant trend of the intercept parameter $$\lambda $$ λ as a function of $$m_{\text {T}}$$ m T was observed, similar to previous NA44 S + Pb results (obtained with a Gaussian approximation, but unlike RHIC results).

Abstract: Excited states in mirror nuclei 31S and 31P were populated in the 1n and 1p exit channels, respectively, of the reaction 20Ne + 12C. The beam of 20Ne, with an energy of 33 MeV, was delivered for the first time by the Piave-Alpi accelerator of the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. Angular correlations of coincident pairs and Doppler-shift attenuation lifetime measurements in 31S and 31P were performed using the multidetector array GASP in conjunction with the EUCLIDES charged particle detector. A comparison of the determined B(E1) strengths of the analog mirror 7/2- → 5/2+ transitions indicates the presence of a violation of isospin symmetry.

Abstract: Abstract The critical point of dense, strongly interacting matter is searched for at the CERN SPS in 40Ar + 45Sc collisions at 150A Ge V /c. The dependence of second-order scaled factorial moments of proton multiplicity distribution on the number of subdivisions of transverse momentum space is measured. The intermittency analysis is performed using both transverse momentum and cumulative transverse momentum. For the first time, statistically independent data sets are used for each subdivision number. The obtained results do not indicate any statistically significant intermittency pattern. An upper limit on the fraction of correlated proton pairs and the power of the correlation function is obtained based on a comparison with the Power-law Model developed for this purpose.

12. Modeling and investigation of a diesel engine with ethanol additives

Abstract: Ethanol is a promising alternative fuel, due to its renewable origin based on biomass. Also, it has a lower carbon content than the diesel fuel, which contains oxygen. For this reason, ethanol provides a remarkable potential for particulate reduction in diesel engines. One-dimensional simulation of a single-cylinder diesel engine with the help of the GT-Power software has been done. The simulation is designed to test the characteristics of the ethanol-filled diesel engine at full load. The obtained results were compared with pure diesel fuel.

Abstract: We have studied the dependence of the production cross-sections of the isotopes 282,283112 and 286–288114 on the excitation energy of the compound nuclei 286112 and 290114. The maximum cross-sections of the xn-evaporation channels for the reaction 238U(48Ca,xn)286-x 112 were measured to be: σ 3n = 2.5 -1.1 +1.8 pb and σ 4n = 0.6 -0.5 +1.6 pb; for the reaction 242Pu(48Ca,xn)290-x 114: σ 2n ∼ 0.5 pb, σ 3n = 3.6 -1.7 +3.4 pb and σ 4n = 4.5 -1.9 +3.6 pb. In the reaction 233U(48Ca, 2-4n)277–279 112 we measured an upper cross-section limit of σ xn ≤ 0.6 pb. An increase of σ ER in the reactions of actinide targets with 48Ca can be due to the expected increase of the survivability of the excited compound nucleus upon closer approach to the closed neutron shell N = 184. The observed nuclear decay properties of the nuclides with Z = 104–118 are compared with theoretical nuclear mass calculations and the systematic trends of α-decay properties. As a whole, they give a consistent pattern of decay of the 18 even-Z neutron-rich nuclides with Z = 104–118 and N = 163–177.

Abstract: PC-based detection system for heavy element research at the Dubna Gas-filled Recoil Separator is presented. It allows to operate with the experimental data obtained from the detection system of GFRS which consists of 12-strip silicon position sensitive detector and two multiwire low-pressure proportional gaseous chambers to generate time-of-flight signal of incoming charge particles. Special attention is payed to the detection of genetically linked recoil-alpha sequences in a real-time mode. The results of the experiment aimed at the synthesis of new Z=113–115 elements with the mentioned technique are presented in brief.

Abstract: neutron-rich isotopes 242,244 Pu, 243 Am, 245,248 Cm and 249 Cf with 48 Ca projectiles. The decay properties of the synthesized nuclei are consistent with the consecutive α-decays originating in the decays of parent nuclides 286,287,288,289 114, 287,288 115, 290,291,293 116 and 294 118 produced in the 2n- to 5n-evaporation channels. The present observations can be considered to be experimental evidence of the existence of the “island of stability” of superheavy elements.

Abstract: This paper presents results of the experiments aimed at producing long-lived superheavy elements located near the spherical-shell closures with Z ⩾ 114 and N ⩾ 172 in the 244Pu + 48Ca and 248Cm + 48Ca reactions. The large measured α-particle energies of the newly observed nuclei, together with the long decay times and spontaneous fission terminating the chains, offer evidence of the decay of nuclei with high atomic numbers. The decay properties of the synthesized nuclei are consistent with the consecutive α-decays originating from the parent nuclides 288, 289114 and 292116, produced in the 3n and 4n evaporation channels with cross-sections of about a picobarn. The present observations can be considered as experimental evidence of the existence of the “island of stability” of superheavy elements.

18. ENABLING CITY DIGITAL TWINS THROUGH URBAN LIVING LABS

Abstract: The population density in urban areas is rapidly rising, leading to a constant need for new infrastructure and services for citizens. To reduce the time to implementation and optimise the monetary cost of various solutions, the plans and policies of local authorities and stakeholders would benefit from undergoing a series of virtual stress tests. To this end, prescriptive and predictive technologies are widely adopted to optimise city planning and to understand the urban processes and environment such as air pollution and transportation. Nevertheless, holistic sandboxes tightly integrated with cities are still largely lacking. The city digital twin is a promising concept that provides a tool for exploration of new solutions in a controlled environment before their deployment. The digital twin is a virtual replica of the real city, which collects data from the infrastructure, processes and services using not only the available systems, but also purposely built connected devices and sensors. In this context, the establishment of urban living labs facilitates the monitoring and understanding of urban processes and enriches the digital twin with highly-relevant data. This paper presents an urban living lab, under deployment in the district of Lozenets in Sofia, Bulgaria. It is part of a larger initiative for developing a city digital twin of Sofia to support the design, exploration, and experimentation of different solutions. The living lab is equipped with sensors for monitoring air quality, atmospheric parameters, noise pollution and pedestrian flows. In addition, a Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) system is realised as an edge computing facility at one of the busiest intersections of the district. Along with the equipment, the paper describes the architecture and components of the platform for data collection, storage, processing, and visualization. Finally, high-priority studies are presented, and their demographic and economic impact is discussed.

Abstract: Abstract Measurements of $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K ∗ ( 892 ) 0 resonance production via its $$K^{+}\pi ^{-}$$ K + π - decay mode in inelastic p+p collisions at beam momenta 40 and 80 $$\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$ GeV / c ( $$\sqrt{s_{NN}}=8.8$$ s NN = 8.8 and 12.3 $$\text{ GeV }$$ GeV ) are presented. The data were recorded by the NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The template method was used to extract the $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K ∗ ( 892 ) 0 signal. Transverse momentum and rapidity spectra were obtained. The mean multiplicities of $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K ∗ ( 892 ) 0 mesons were found to be $$(35.1 \pm 1.3 \mathrm {(stat)} \pm 3.6 \mathrm {(sys))} \cdot 10^{-3}$$ ( 35.1 ± 1.3 ( stat ) ± 3.6 ( sys ) ) · 10 - 3 at 40 $$\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$ GeV / c and $$(58.3 \pm 1.9 \mathrm {(stat)} \pm 4.9 \mathrm {(sys))} \cdot 10^{-3}$$ ( 58.3 ± 1.9 ( stat ) ± 4.9 ( sys ) ) · 10 - 3 at 80 $$\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$ GeV / c . The NA61/SHINE results are compared with the Epos1.99 and Hadron Resonance Gas models as well as with world data. The transverse mass spectra of $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K ∗ ( 892 ) 0 mesons and other particles previously reported by NA61/SHINE were fitted within the Blast-Wave model. The transverse flow velocities are close to 0.1–0.2 of the speed of light and are significantly smaller than the ones determined in heavy nucleus-nucleus interactions at the same beam momenta.

Abstract: This article reports the results of experiments aimed at producing hypothetical long-lived superheavy elements located near the spherical-shell closures with Z≥114 and N≥72. For the synthesis of superheavy nuclei, we used a combination of neutron-rich reaction partners, with a 244Pu target and a 48Ca projectile. The sensitivity of the present experiment exceeded by more than two orders of magnitude previous attempts at synthesizing superheavy nuclides in reactions of 48Ca projectiles with actinide targets. We observed new decay sequences of genetically linked alpha decays terminated by spontaneous fission. The high measured alpha-particle energies, together with the long decay times and spontaneous fission terminating the chains, offer evidence for the decay of nuclei with high atomic numbers. The decay properties of the synthesized nuclei are consistent with the consecutive alpha decays originating from the parent nuclides 288,289114, produced in the 3n-and 4n-evaporation channels with cross sections of about a picobarn. The present observations can be considered experimental evidence for the existence of the “island of stability” of superheavy elements and are discussed in terms of modern theoretical approaches.

Abstract: In bombardment of ${}^{244}\mathrm{Pu}$ with ${}^{48}\mathrm{Ca}$, we observed a decay sequence consisting of an implanted heavy atom, three subsequent $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ decays, and a spontaneous fission (SF), all correlated in time and position. The measured $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ energies and corresponding time intervals were ${E}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}9.71$ MeV ( $\ensuremath{\Delta}t\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}30.4$ s), 8.67 MeV ( $\ensuremath{\Delta}t\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}15.4$ min), and 8.83 MeV ( $\ensuremath{\Delta}t\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1.6$ min); for the SF ( $\ensuremath{\Delta}t\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}16.5$ min), the total deposited energy was approximately 190 MeV. The $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-particle energies together with the decay times and SF terminating the chain offer evidence of the decay of nuclei with high atomic numbers. This decay chain is a good candidate for originating from the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ decay of the parent nucleus ${}^{289}114$, produced with a cross section of about 1 pb.

Abstract: Abstract The production of $$K^{0}_{S}$$ K S 0 mesons in inelastic p+p collisions at beam momentum 158 $$\text{ GeV }/c$$ GeV / c ( $$\sqrt{s_{NN}}=17.3$$ s NN = 17.3 $$\text{ GeV }$$ GeV ) was measured with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. Double-differential distributions were obtained in transverse momentum and rapidity. The mean multiplicity of $$K^{0}_{S}$$ K S 0 was determined to be $$0.162 \pm 0.001 (stat.) \pm 0.011 (sys.)$$ 0.162 ± 0.001 ( s t a t . ) ± 0.011 ( s y s . ) . The results on $$K^{0}_{S}$$ K S 0 production are compared with model predictions (EPOS 1.99, SMASH 2.0, PHSD and UrQMD 3.4 models) as well as with published world data.

Abstract: The focal plane detector of the Dubna gass-filled recoil separator has been developed to study fusion reaction products from heavy-ion-induced nuclear reactions in the region of heavy nuclei with Z > 104. It consists of a 12 strip position-sensitive silicon detector to measure the energy/position of implanted nuclides and decay products and two low-pressure proportional chambers to generate a TOF signal. Additional information on ΔE from the STOP chamber is stored to provide an opportunity to discriminate alpha decays to the ground state of daughter product from the ones accompanied by conversion electron emission. The detector was successfully applied for the nuclear reactions which led to the discovery of new nuclides with Z = 108, 110 (A = 267, 273). An appropriate data acquisition system is described.

Abstract: In bombardments of $^{244}\mathrm{Pu}$ with $^{34}\mathrm{S}$ we discovered the \ensuremath{\alpha}-decaying nuclide $^{273}110$. We conducted an extensive off-line search of the raw data for event sequences which fit the expected pattern of implantation in a position-sensitive detector and subsequent decay of $^{273}110$ and its descendants. We observed one three-member sequence of genetically linked \ensuremath{\alpha} decays, resulting in ${\mathit{E}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}$=11.35 MeV, a half-life of 0.${3}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}0.2}^{+1.3}$ ms, and a production cross section of about 0.4 pb for $^{273}110$. Other possible $^{273}110$ event chains were also observed. The measured \ensuremath{\alpha}-particle energy for the N=163 nuclide $^{273}110$ provides direct evidence for a neutron shell closure at N=162. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: In bombardments of ${}^{238}$U targets with 186-MeV ${}^{34}$S projectiles we discovered the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-decaying nuclide ${}^{267}$108 with a half-life of ${19}_{\ensuremath{-}10}^{+29}$ ms, ${E}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}9.74$ to 9.87 MeV, and a production cross section of about 2.5 pb. The new nuclide was identified by measuring correlations in energy, time, and position to establish genetic links between its implantation in a position-sensitive silicon detector and subsequent $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ decay followed by $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ decays of known descendant nuclides.

Abstract: Abstract Double-differential yields of $${\Xi \left( 1530\right) ^{0}} $$ Ξ 1530 0 and $${\overline{\Xi }\left( 1530\right) ^{0}} $$ Ξ ¯ 1530 0 resonances produced in p+p interactions were measured at a laboratory beam momentum of 158 $$\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$ GeV / c . This measurement is the first of its kind in p+p interactions below LHC energies. It was performed at the CERN SPS by the NA61/SHINE collaboration. Double-differential distributions in rapidity and transverse momentum were obtained from a sample of $$26\times 10^6$$ 26 × 10 6 inelastic events. The rapidity and transverse momentum spectra and mean multiplicities were compared to predictions of string-hadronic and statistical model calculations.

Abstract: There is a great variety of terms and concepts describing laparoscopic hysterectomy in scientific literature. The term "laparoscopic hysterectomy" includes different operations where the laparoscope is used as an aid for a hysterectomy. The first classifications related to hysterectomy laparoscopic procedures were suggested by Munro and Parker (1993) Johns and Diamonds (1994) and Garry et al. (1994). Based on them is the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL) classification of 2000. Reich defined basic terms easy to use in clinical practice. The elaboration of a suitable classification system describing the size of laparoscopic intervention in hysterectomy is a prerequisite for an adequate comparison of the results of scientific researches.

Abstract: There is a great variety of operative techniques for laparoscopic hysterectomy described in scientific literature.The authors give variants of the laparoscopic hysterectomy technique summarizing their two-year experience (2010-2011). The emphasis is on some peculiarities in CO2 insufflation and placing ports as well as on certain specific steps in the operation stages.The mean operative time of different types of laparoscopic hysterectomy is distributed as follows: laparoscopic hysterectomy with uterine artery ligation--72, 96 +/- 14 min, total laparoscopic hysterectomy--68, 80 +/- 15 min, laparoscopically-assisted vaginal hysterectomy--75, 82 +/- 18 min (p0.05). There are no significant differences in mean hospital stay as well as in postoperative hemoglobin and postoperative hematocrite values on the first day after the operation. The total rate of complications is 1.4%.The presented laparoscopic hysterectomy technique is safe and feasible for general gynecological surgical practice as long as sufficient experience has been gained and the technical peculiarities at separate stages of the operation are strictly observed.

Abstract: Hysterectomy is the most common gynecological operation after Caesarean section and the laparoscopic access to uterus removal is one of the contemporary methods showing slow but steady growth in time. In reference to indications and contraindications for laparoscopic hysterectomy, the following directions emerge as controversial: malignant gynecological tumors, uterus size, and high body mass index. Laparoscopic hysterectomy can be taken into consideration at the first stage of endometrial, cervical and ovarian cancer. If there is doubt about an uterus sarcoma and a laparoscopic access is accomplished, a conversion to abdominal hysterectomy must be done. Obesity and big uteri are not a contrarindication for that minimally-invasive access. Today, laparoscopic hysterectomy is a reasonable alternative to total abdominal and vaginal hysterectomy.

Abstract: In bombardments of 248Cm with 22Ne we discovered two new isotopes, 265106 and 266106, by establishing genetic links between α decays of the 106 nuclides and spontaneous fission (SF) or α decays of the daughter (or granddaughter) nuclides. For 266106 we measured Eα = 8.63 ± 0.05 MeV followed by the SF decay of 262104 for which we measured a half-life value of 1.2+1.00.5 s. For 265106 we measured Eα = 8.71–8.91 MeV. We estimated α half-lives of 10–30 s for 266106 and 2–30 s for 265106 with SF branches of approximately 50% or less. The decay properties of 266106 indicate a large enhancement in the SF stability of this N = 160 nuclide and confirm the existence of the predicted deformed shells N = 162 and Z = 108.

Abstract: Thirty‐four new nuclides with Z = 104–116, 118 and N = 161–177 have been synthesized in the complete‐fusion reactions of 238U, 237Np, 242,244Pu, 243Am, 245,248Cm, and 249Cf targets with 48Ca beams. The masses of evaporation residues were identified through measurements of the excitation functions of the xn‐evaporation channels and from cross bombardments. The decay properties of the new nuclei agree with those of previously known heavy nuclei and with predictions from different theoretical models. A discussion of self‐consistent interpretations of all observed decay chains originating from the parent isotopes 282,283112, 282113, 286–289114, 287,288115, 290–293116, and 294118 is presented. Decay energies and lifetimes of the neutron‐rich superheavy nuclei as well as their production cross sections indicate a considerable increase in the stability of nuclei with the approach to the theoretically predicted nuclear shells with N = 184 and Z = 114.

Abstract: An experiment has been performed to detect the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ emission mode in ${}^{178}\mathrm{Hf}{}^{m2}$ isomer decay and a partial half-life of $(2.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.5)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{10}$y was measured. It was concluded that $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ decay is strongly retarded by the centrifugal barrier arising due to the high spin of this isomeric state. Additional analysis shows, however, that the $K$-hindrance in this $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ decay is relatively weak, despite the strong manifestation of spin-hindrance.

Abstract: Abstract Measurements of multiplicity fluctuations of identified hadrons produced in inelastic p+p interactions at 31, 40, 80, and 158 $$\text {Ge}\text {V}/c$$ Ge / c beam momentum are presented. Three different measures of multiplicity fluctuations are used: the scaled variance $$\omega $$ ω and strongly intensive measures $$\Sigma $$ Σ and $$\Delta $$ Δ . These fluctuation measures involve second and first moments of joint multiplicity distributions. Data analysis is preformed using the Identity method which corrects for incomplete particle identification. Strongly intensive quantities are calculated in order to allow for a direct comparison to corresponding results on nucleus–nucleus collisions. The results for different hadron types are shown as a function of collision energy. A comparison with predictions of string-resonance Monte-Carlo models: Epos, Smash and Venus, is also presented.

Abstract: Abstract The physics goal of the strong interaction program of the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is to study the phase diagram of hadronic matter by a scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei with various sizes at a set of energies covering the SPS energy range. This paper presents differential inclusive spectra of transverse momentum, transverse mass and rapidity of $$\pi ^{-}$$ π - mesons produced in central $${}^{40}$$ 40 Ar+ $${}^{45}$$ 45 Sc collisions at beam momenta of 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150 $$A\,\text{ Ge }\text{ V }\!/\!\textit{c}$$ A Ge V / c . Energy and system size dependence of parameters of these distributions – mean transverse mass, the inverse slope parameter of transverse mass spectra, width of the rapidity distribution and mean multiplicity – are presented and discussed. Furthermore, the dependence of the ratio of the mean number of produced pions to the mean number of wounded nucleons on the collision energy was derived. The results are compared to predictions of several models.

Abstract: The decay properties of {sup 290}116 and {sup 291}116, and the dependence of their production cross sections on the excitation energies of the compound nucleus, {sup 293}116, have been measured in the {sup 245}Cm({sup 48}Ca,xn){sup 293-x}116 reaction. These isotopes of element 116 are the decay daughters of element 118 isotopes, which are produced via the {sup 249}Cf+{sup 48}Ca reaction. They performed the element 118 experiment at two projectile energies, corresponding to {sup 297}118 compound nucleus excitation energies of E* = 29.2 {+-} 2.5 and 34.4 {+-} 2.3 MeV. During an irradiation with a total beam dose of 4.1 x 10{sup 19} {sup 48}Ca projectiles, three similar decay chains consisting of two or three consecutive {alpha} decays and terminated by a spontaneous fission (SF) with high total kinetic energy of about 230 MeV were observed. The three decay chains originated from the even-even isotope {sup 294}118 (E{sub {alpha}} = 11.65 {+-} 0.06 MeV, T{sub {alpha}} = 0.89{sub -0.31}{sup +1.07} ms) produced in the 3n-evaporation channel of the {sup 249}Cf+{sup 48}Ca reaction with a maximum cross section of 0.5{sub -0.3}{sup +1.6} pb.

Abstract: The results of two experiments designed to synthesize element 115 isotopes in the {sup 243}Am+{sup 48}Ca reaction are presented. Two new elements with atomic numbers 113 and 115 were observed for the first time. With 248-MeV {sup 48}Ca projectiles, we observed three similar decay chains consisting of five consecutive {alpha} decays, all detected in a total time interval of 30 s. Each chain was terminated by a spontaneous fission (SF) with a high-energy release and a lifetime of about a day. With 253-MeV {sup 48}Ca projectiles, we registered a different decay chain of consecutive {alpha} decays detected in a time interval of 0.5 s, also terminated by spontaneous fission, but after 1.8 h. The decay properties of the eleven new {alpha}- and SF-decaying nuclei are consistent with expectations for consecutive {alpha} decays originating from the parent isotopes {sup 288}115 and {sup 287}115, produced in the 3n- and 4n-evaporation channels, respectively. Support for the assignment of the atomic numbers of all of the nuclei in the {sup 288}115 decay chain was obtained in an independent experiment in which a long-lived spontaneous fission activity, {sup 268}Db (15 events), was found to be chemically consistent with the fifth group of the periodic table.more » The odd-odd isotope {sup 288}115 was observed with largest cross section of about 4 pb. In the SF decay of {sup 268}Db, a total kinetic energy of 230 MeV and a neutron multiplicity per fission of 4.2 were measured. The decay properties of the 11 new isotopes with Z=105-115 and the production cross sections are in agreement with modern concepts of the role of nuclear shells in the stability of superheavy nuclei. Abstract: We have studied the dependence of the production cross sections of the isotopes {sup 282,283}112 and {sup 286,287}114 on the excitation energy of the compound nuclei {sup 286}112 and {sup 290}114. The maximum cross section values of the xn-evaporation channels for the reaction {sup 238}U({sup 48}Ca,xn){sup 286-x}112 were measured to be {sigma}{sub 3n}=2.5{sub -1.1}{sup +1.8} pb and {sigma}{sub 4n}=0.6{sub -0.5}{sup +1.6} pb; for the reaction {sup 242}Pu({sup 48}Ca,xn){sup 290-x}114: {sigma}{sub 2n}{approx}0.5 pb, {sigma}{sub 3n}=3.6{sub -1.7}{sup +3.4} pb, and {sigma}{sub 4n}=4.5{sub -1.9}{sup +3.6} pb. In the reaction {sup 233}U({sup 48}Ca,2-4n){sup 277-279}112 at E*=34.9=2.2 MeV we measured an upper cross section limit of {sigma}{sub xn}{

Abstract: We have studied the excitation functions of the reactions $^{244}\mathrm{Pu}$($^{48}\mathrm{Ca}$,$xn$). Maximum cross sections for the evaporation of 3--5 neutrons in the complete-fusion reaction $^{244}\mathrm{Pu+}^{48}\mathrm{Ca}$ were measured to be ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{3n}=2\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{pb}$, ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{4n}=5\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{pb}$, and ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{5n}=1\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{pb}$. The decay properties of $3n$-evaporation product $^{289}114$, in the decay chains observed at low $^{48}\mathrm{Ca}$ energy coincide well with those previously observed in the $^{244}\mathrm{Pu+}^{48}\mathrm{Ca}$ and $^{248}\mathrm{Cm+}^{48}\mathrm{Ca}$ reactions and assigned to $^{288}114$. Two isotopes of element 114 and their descendant nuclei were identified for the first time at higher bombarding energies: $^{288}114$ (${E}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}=9.95\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{MeV}$, ${T}_{1∕2}=0.6\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{s}$) and $^{287}114$ (${E}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}=10.04\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{MeV}$, ${T}_{1∕2}=1\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{s}$). We also report on the observation of new isotopes of element 116, $^{290,291}116$, produced in the $^{245}\mathrm{Cm}+^{48}\mathrm{Ca}$ reaction with cross sections of about $1\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{pb}$. A discussion of self-consistent interpretations of all observed decay chains originating at $Z=118$, 116, and 114 is presented.

Abstract: This paper presents results of experiments aimed at producing long-lived superheavy elements located near the spherical shell closures with Z ≥114 and N ≥172 in the reactions of neutron-rich isotopes 244Pu, 245,248Cm and 249Cf with 48Ca projectiles. The decay properties of the synthesized nuclei are consistent with the consecutive α-decays originating in the decays of parent nuclides 289114, 290,291,293116 and 294118 produced in the 2n and 3n-evaporation channels. The present observations can be considered to be experimental evidence of the existence of the “island of stability” of superheavy elements.

Abstract: The present paper reports the results of an attempt aimed at the synthesis of element 118 in the reaction {sup 249}Cf({sup 48}Ca,3n){sup 294}118. The experiment was performed employing the Dubna Gas-filled Recoil Separator and the U400 heavy-ion cyclotron at FLNR, JINR, Dubna. In the course of a 2300-hour irradiation of an enriched {sup 249}Cf target (0.23 mg/cm{sup 2}) with a beam of 245-MeV {sup 48}Ca ions, we accumulated a total beam dose of 2.5 x 10{sup 19} ions. We detected two events that may be attributed to the formation and decay of nuclei with Z=118. For one event, we observed a decay chain of two correlated {alpha}-decays with corresponding energies and correlation times of E{sub {alpha}1} = 11.65 {+-} 0.06 MeV, t{sub {alpha}1} = 2.55 ms and E{sub {alpha}2} = 10.71 {+-} 0.17 MeV, t{sub {alpha}2} = 42.1 ms and, finally, a spontaneous fission with the sum of the kinetic energies of the fission fragments E{sub tot} = 207 MeV (TKE {approx} 230 MeV) and t{sub SF} = 0.52 s. In the second event chain, the recoil nucleus decayed into two fission fragments with E{sub tot} = 223 MeV (TKE {approx} 245 MeV) 3.16 ms later, without intervening {alpha} decays.more » The probabilities that these events were caused by the chance correlations of unrelated signals are negligible. Both events were observed at an excitation energy of the compound nucleus {sup 297}118 of E* = 30.0 {+-} 2.4 MeV, close to the expected maximum of the 3n-evaporation channel. The relationship between the decay energy Q{sub {alpha}} and decay period T{sub {alpha}} shows that sequential {alpha}-transitions in the first event correspond to the decay chain with Z = 118{_}116{_}114. Decay characteristics of the newly observed nuclides are compared with radioactive decay properties of the even-even isotopes with Z = 116, 114 and 112 previously produced in the reactions {sup 244}Pu, {sup 248}Cm + {sup 48}Ca and calculations made in various nuclear models.« less
