1. Anti-E alloimmunization in a pregnancy with a low antibody titer

Abstract

Red blood cell alloimmunization during pregnancy causes hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn. While alloimmunization in pregnancy is treatable with anti-D antibodies, management with other antibodies has not been studied. A 32-year-old woman had anti-E antibodies detected during pregnancy, but the titer was < 1 : 2. Her newborn was admitted to hospital because direct Coombs tests were positive. Low titers of maternal anti-E antibodies were found in the newborn. We performed phototherapy and administered intravenous immunoglobulin because the newborn showed early jaundice and hyperkalemia, which suggested hemolytic disease. After being discharged at 6 days of age, the baby was readmitted to hospital at 9 days because of recurrent jaundice and underwent phototherapy. The baby was later discharged without recurrence of jaundice. Low anti-E antibody titers in pregnancy can cause alloimmunization, which can be treated successfully. The potential risk of hemolytic disease should be considered in cases with such low titers.

2. The potential role of robust face representations learned within families when searching for one’s child in a crowd

Abstract

Abstract Own child’s face is one of the most socially salient stimuli for parents, and a faster search for it than for other children’s faces may help provide warmer and more sensitive care. However, it has not been experimentally examined whether parents find their child’s face faster. In addition, although own child’s face is specially processed, the search time for own child’s face may be similar to that for other socially salient stimuli, such as own or spouse’s faces. This study tested these possibilities using a visual search paradigm. Participants (parents) searched for their child’s, own, spouse’s, other child’s, same-sex adult’s, or opposite-sex adult’s faces as search targets. Our findings indicate that both mothers and fathers identified their child’s face more quickly than other children’s faces. Similarly, parents found their own and spouse’s faces more quickly than other adults’ faces. Moreover, the search time for family members’ faces increased with the number of faces on the search display, suggesting an attentional serial search. These results suggest that robust face representations learned within families and close relationships can support reduced search times for family members’ faces.

3. Mechanism for the Increased Permeability in Endothelial Monolayers Induced by Elastase

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism for the increase in endothelial permeability induced by human neutrophil elastase (HNE). Pretreatment of bovine pulmonary artery endothelial cells (BPAEC) with HNE(0-30 μg/ml) for 1 h produced a concentration dependent increase in 125I-albumin clearance. The effect was reversible and was not due to cytolysis. Pretreatment of BPAEC with sodium tungstate, which depletes xanthine oxidase, or with oxypurinol, did not prevent HNE induced increased permeability. Heparin, which neutralizes the cationic charge of HNE, also had no protective effect. Pretreatment with heat inactivated HNE, which still had positive charge sites, did not result in increased endothelial permeability. Also, ONO-5046, a novel specific inhibitor of HNE, did prevent increased permeability. These results suggest that elastase increases endothelial permeability mainly through its proteolytic effects.

Abstract

In this study, strawberry plants (Fragaria × ananassa Duchesne ex Rozier) grown via elevated cultivation in a greenhouse were heavily infested with powdery mildew. We isolated the powdery mildew fungus from strawberry leaves and identified the isolate as Podosphaera aphanis (Wallroth) U. Braun & S. Takamatsu var. aphanis KSP-7 N, based on its morphological characteristics and sequencing of the ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer region. The host range of KSP-7 N was assessed by inoculating 17 plant families comprising 49 species (a total of 110 cultivars) with conidia. The fungus caused severe powdery mildew on the tested strawberry plants (commercial, wild, and false strawberries), produced scattered conidia on conidiophores, and formed completely catenated conidia within approximately 27 h from conidiophore erection to the first release of mature conidia. Six conidia were produced on each conidiophore; only those at the apex reached maturity. The cycles of conidial release were repeated 17 to 21 times at intervals of approximately 6 h, during gradual upward elongation of the conidiophores. At the final stage, conidia were released without growth or septation of the generative cells. Conidiophores produced an average of 38 conidia during a 96-h period. These results will help to clarify the modes of conidiogenesis, the lifetime of conidiophores, and the production of conidia on a conidiophore among powdery mildew pathogens isolated from strawberry leaves.

14. Covid-19 infodemic on older people with access to digital media: factors associated with psychopathological alterations

Abstract

Objective to analyze the sociodemographic profile and COVID-19 infodemic’s repercussions on psychopathological alterations in older people with access to digital media. Method cross-sectional study by web-based survey in the population over 60 years old who use digital media. Descriptive analysis considered sociodemographic variables and other variables related to exposure to information about COVID-19; a set of signs and symptoms to psychopathological alterations due to this exposure were analyzed. Data analyzed by the Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis tests and Spearman’s correlation coefficient. Results a total of 470 older people were included in the survey, 61.3% aged 60 to 69 years, 67.2% female, 71.1% white race/color and 41.3% with higher education. 89.4% of respondents be exposed to news and information about COVID-19 on television, and 71.3% on social network. The most cited psychic symptoms were feeling worried (76.9%), fear of death of dear people (76.8%) and fear of getting sick (74%). Psychopathological alterations were observed in 3.8% of women and 5.9% of men. These sign and symptoms were associated with a lower level of education, a decrease in post-pandemic income and felt affected by the news about COVID-19 on social networks. Conclusion COVID-19 infodemic is associated with psychopathological alterations in older people. Even with the increase in access to social networks, the main media used by older people is television. Strategies for digital inclusion and literacy should be developed, offering tools for older people to fight the COVID-19 infodemic.

Abstract

Resumo Objetivo Analisar o perfil sociodemográfico e repercussões da infodemia de covid-19 nas alterações psicopatológicas em idosos com acesso a mídias digitais. Método Estudo transversal por web-based survey na população acima de 60 anos que utiliza mídias digitais. A análise descritiva contemplou variáveis sociodemográficas e relacionadas à exposição a informações sobre covid-19; analisou-se um conjunto de sinais e sintomas de alterações psicopatológicas devido a essa exposição. Os dados foram analisados pelos testes Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis e coeficiente de correlação de Spearman. Resultados Participaram da pesquisa 470 pessoas idosas, a maioria na faixa etária de 60 a 69 anos (61,3%), sexo feminino (67,2%), raça/cor branca (71,1%) e com nível superior ou maior escolaridade (41,3%). A exposição às informações sobre covid-19 ocorreu em 89,4% dos respondentes pela televisão e em 71,3%, pelas redes sociais, tendo causado preocupação (76,9%) e medo, tanto da morte de pessoas queridas (76,8%) quanto de adoecer (74%). Esses sinais e sintomas de alterações psicopatológicas estavam presentes em 3,8% das mulheres e 5,9% dos homens, associados à menor nível de escolaridade, diminuição da renda pós-pandemia e ao fato do idoso se sentir afetado pelas notícias sobre covid-19 veiculadas nas redes sociais. Conclusão A infodemia de covid-19 foi associada a alterações psicopatológicas em idosos. Mesmo com o aumento do acesso às redes sociais, a principal fonte de informação dessa população é a televisão. Estratégias de inclusão e alfabetização digitais para a população idosa devem ser pensadas como meio para lidarem com a infodemia de covid-19.

Abstract

The figure-ground division plays a fundamental role in all image perceptions. Although there are a lot of studies about extraction of a figure such as detection of edges or grouping of texture, there are few discussions about a relationship between obtained figure and ground. We focused on double image illusions having two complementary relationships be- tween figure and ground and analyzed them. We divided the double image illusions according to two different interpretations and using these divisions we extracted and analyzed their logical structures by lattices derived from rough sets that we had developed. As a result we discovered unusual logical structures in double image illusions.

Abstract

O eritrograma é uma avaliação que representa um auxílio ao clínico no diagnóstico de afecções que acometem os animais domésticos. No entanto, estudos hematológicos em bubalinos são escassos, havendo poucas informações na literatura a respeito de valores de referência dos constituintes sanguíneos desta espécie. Assim, este trabalho teve como objetivo a análise do eritrograma de búfalos de diferentes faixas etárias da raça Murrah, machos e fêmeas. Os animais em estudo foram distribuídos em quatro grupos experimentais, de acordo com as idades: Grupo 1: animais com idade entre o nascimento e 3 meses (n=15); Grupo 2: animais com idade entre 4 e 6 meses (n=50); Grupo 3: animais com idade entre 7 e 12 meses (n=50); e Grupo 4: animais com idade superior a 12 meses (n=50). Como resultados das análises foram encontrados os seguintes valores médios, no Grupo 1: 7,9x106 hemácias/mL de sangue (He); 13,0 g/dL de hemoglobina (Hb); hematócrito (Ht) de 38,9%; Volume Corpuscular Médio (VCM) de 49,0 fl; Concentração Hemoglobínica Corpuscular Média (CHCM) de 33,6 %, e Hemoglobina Corpuscular Média (HCM) de 16,4 pg; no Grupo 2: He: 7,1 x10(6)/mL; Hb: 12,5 g/dL; Ht: 36,8%; VCM: 52,4 fl; CHCM: 33,9%, e HCM: 17,8 pg; no Grupo 3: He: 7,9 x10(6)/mL; Hb: 12,0 g/dL; Ht: 33,8%; VCM: 43,1 fl; CHCM: 35,4%, e HCM: 15,34 pg; e no Grupo 4: He: 6,7 x10(6)/mL; Hb: 11,7 g/dL; Ht: 34,4%; VCM: 53,4 fl; CHCM: 34,4%. e HCM: 17,4 pg. A análise estatística dos resultados encontrados para as diferentes faixas etárias permitiu concluir que ocorreram variações determinadas pela evolução da idade, caracterizadas por diminuição do número médio de hemácias (He), da concentração de hemoglobina (Hb) e do valor do hematócrito (Ht). Os índices hematimétricos apresentaram variações significativas no G3.Erythrograms aid the veterinary practitioner in the diagnosis of diseases that affect domestic animals. However, hematological studies involving buffaloes are scarce, with little information in the literature on reference values for blood components in this species. Therefore, the objective of this study was analyze erythrograms of Murrah breed buffaloes of different ages, both males and females. Buffaloes in the study were distributed into four experimental groups, according to their ages: Group 1, animals from birth to 3 months of age (n=15); Group 2, animals from 4 to 6 months of age (n=50); Group 3, animals from 7 to 12 months of age (n=50); and Group 4, animals from 13 months to five years of age (n=50). The following values were obtained, for Group 1: 7.9x10(6) erythrocytes/mL (He), 13.0g/dL hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Ht) 38.9%, Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) 49.0 fl, Mean Hemoglobin Corpuscular Concentration (MCHC) 33.6%, and Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH) 16.4 pg; for Group 2: He7.1x10(6)/mL, Hb12.5g/dL, Ht 36.8%, MCV 52.4 fl; MCHC 33.9%; and MCH 17.8 pg; for Group 3: He 7.9x10(6)/mL, Hb12.0g/dL, Ht 33.8%, MCV 43.1 fl, MCHC 35.4%, and MCH 15.34pg; for Group 4: He 6.7x10(6)/mL, Hb 11.7g/dL, Ht 34.4%, MCV 53.4 fl, MCHC 34.4%, and MCH 17.4 pg. Statistical analysis of the results for the different age ranges permitted the conclusion that when the animals got older there was a decrease in the mean red cell counts (He), hemoglobin concentration (Hb) and hematocrit values (Ht). Abstract

Background Blood pressure (BP) variability has reportedly been a risk factor for various clinical events. To clarify the influence of BP visit‐to‐visit variability on adverse events in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, a post hoc analysis of the J‐RHYTHM Registry was performed. Methods and Results Of 7406 outpatients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation from 158 institutions, 7226 (age, 69.7±9.9 years; men, 70.7%), in whom BP was measured 4 times or more (14.6±5.0 times) during the 2‐year follow‐up period or until occurrence of an event, constituted the study group. SD and coefficient of variation of BP values were calculated as BP variability. Thromboembolism, major hemorrhage, and all‐cause death occurred in 110 (1.5%), 121 (1.7%), and 168 (2.3%) patients, respectively. When patients were divided into quartiles of systolic BP‐SD (P =0.015 for thromboembolism; HR, 2.60, 95% CI, 1.36–4.97, P =0.004 for major hemorrhage; and HR, 1.85, 95% CI, 1.11–3.07, P =0.018 for all‐cause death) after adjusting for components of the CHA 2 DS 2 ‐VASc score, warfarin and antiplatelet use, atrial fibrillation type, BP measurement times, and others. These findings were consistent when BP‐coefficient of variation was used instead of BP‐SD. Conclusions Systolic BP visit‐to‐visit variability was significantly associated with all adverse events in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. Further studies are needed to clarify the causality between BP variability and adverse outcomes in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. Abstract

Previous studies have demonstrated that the serotonin transporter gene-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) affects the recognition of facial expressions and attention to them. However, the relationship between 5-HTTLPR and the perceptual detection of others' facial expressions, the process which takes place prior to emotional labeling (i.e., recognition), is not clear. To examine whether the perceptual detection of emotional facial expressions is influenced by the allelic variation (short/long) of 5-HTTLPR, happy and sad facial expressions were presented at weak and mid intensities (25% and 50%). Ninety-eight participants, genotyped for 5-HTTLPR, judged whether emotion in images of faces was present. Participants with short alleles showed higher sensitivity (d') to happy than to sad expressions, while participants with long allele(s) showed no such positivity advantage. This effect of 5-HTTLPR was found at different facial expression intensities among males and females. The results suggest that at the perceptual stage, a short allele enhances the processing of positive facial expressions rather than that of negative facial expressions.

Abstract

The Telescope Array (TA) experiment is designed to detect air showers induced by ultra high energy cosmic rays. The TA ground Surface particle Detector (TASD) observed several short-time bursts of air shower like events. These bursts are not likely due to chance coincidence between single shower events. The expectation of chance coincidence is less than 10 − 4 for five-year's observation. We checked the correlation between these bursts of events and lightning data, and found evidence for correlations in timing and position. Some features of the burst events are similar to those of a normal cosmic ray air shower, and some are not. On this paper, we report the observed bursts of air shower like events and their correlation with lightning.

Abstract

Phototherapy is a useful noninvasive therapy, but it can induce cutaneous malignant tumours, including squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). We report on a 79-year-old man who had long-standing mycosis fungoides for 40 years, which had been treated with psoralen ultraviolet A therapy for 37 years at a dose of approximately 5000 J/cm2 . Approximately 6 years before presentation, numerous types of cutaneous malignancies, including actinic keratosis, BCC and SCC, had begun to develop all over the patient's body. We hypothesized that he was experiencing a pathogenesis similar to patients with xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), and we therefore assessed his DNA repair capacity. Based on these investigations, the patient was eventually diagnosed as non-XP, even though we detected that his DNA repair capacity was slightly lower than that of normal controls, which may have led to the skin cancers. We speculate that multiple skin malignancies can be induced by long-term phototherapy in patients with slightly impaired DNA repair capacity.

Abstract

TARA (Telescope Array Radar) is a cosmic ray radar detection experiment colocated with Telescope Array, the conventional surface scintillation detector (SD) and fluorescence telescope detector (FD) near Delta, Utah, U.S.A. The TARA detector combines a 40 kW, 54.1 MHz VHF transmitter and high-gain transmitting antenna which broadcasts the radar carrier over the SD array and within the FD field of view, towards a 250 MS/s DAQ receiver. TARA has been collecting data since 2013 with the primary goal of observing the radar signatures of extensive air showers (EAS). Simulations indicate that echoes are expected to be short in duration (~10 microseconds) and exhibit rapidly changing frequency, with rates on the order of 1 MHz/microsecond. The EAS radar cross-section (RCS) is currently unknown although it is the subject of over 70 years of speculation. A novel signal search technique is described in which the expected radar echo of a particular air shower is used as a matched filter template and compared to waveforms obtained by triggering the radar DAQ using the Telescope Array fluorescence detector. No evidence for the scattering of radio frequency radiation by EAS is obtained to date. Abstract

Cosmic rays in the energy range $10^{18.0}$ - $10^{18.5}$ eV are thought to have a light, probably protonic, composition. To study their origin one can search for anisotropy in their arrival directions. Extragalactic cosmic rays should be isotropic, but galactic cosmic rays of this type should be seen mostly along the galactic plane, and there should be a shortage of events coming from directions near the galactic anticenter. This is due to the fact that, under the influence of the galactic magnetic field, the transition from ballistic to diffusive behavior is well advanced, and this qualitative picture persists over the whole energy range. Guided by models of the galactic magnetic field that indicate that the enhancement along the galactic plane should have a standard deviation of about 20$^\circ$ in galactic latitude, and the deficit in the galactic anticenter direction should have a standard deviation of about 50$^\circ$ in galactic longitude, we use the data of the Telescope Array surface detector in $10^{18.0}$ to $10^{18.5}$ eV energy range to search for these effects. The data are isotropic. Neither an enhancement along the galactic plane nor a deficit in the galactic anticenter direction is found. Using these data we place an upper limit on the fraction of EeV cosmic rays of galactic origin at 1.3% at 95% confidence level.

Abstract

The Pierre Auger Collaboration (Auger) recently reported a correlation between the arrival directions of cosmic rays with energies above 39 EeV and the flux pattern of 23 nearby starburst galaxies (SBGs). In this Letter, we tested the same hypothesis using cosmic rays detected by the Telescope Array experiment (TA) in the 9-year period from May 2008 to May 2017. Unlike the Auger analysis, we did not optimize the parameter values but kept them fixed to the best-fit values found by Auger, namely 9.7% for the anisotropic fraction of cosmic rays assumed to originate from the SBGs in the list and 12.9{\deg} for the angular scale of the correlations. The energy threshold we adopted is 43 EeV, corresponding to 39 EeV in Auger when taking into account the energy-scale difference between two experiments. We find that the TA data is compatible with isotropy to within 1.1{\sigma} and with the Auger result to within 1.4{\sigma}, meaning that it is not capable to discriminate between these two hypotheses., Comment: More accurate title, fixed an inconsistency in the declination range used, with a few figures slightly changing as a result, other minor revisions

Abstract

One of the uncertainties in interpretation of ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) data comes from the hadronic interaction models used for air shower Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. The number of muons observed at the ground from UHECR-induced air showers is expected to depend upon the hadronic interaction model. One may therefore test the hadronic interaction models by comparing the measured number of muons with the MC prediction. In this paper, we present the results of studies of muon densities in UHE extensive air showers obtained by analyzing the signal of surface detector stations which should have high $\it{muon \, purity}$. The muon purity of a station will depend on both the inclination of the shower and the relative position of the station. In 7 years' data from the Telescope Array experiment, we find that the number of particles observed for signals with an expected muon purity of $\sim$65% at a lateral distance of 2000 m from the shower core is $1.72 \pm 0.10{\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.37 {\rm (syst.)}$ times larger than the MC prediction value using the QGSJET II-03 model for proton-induced showers. A similar effect is also seen in comparisons with other hadronic models such as QGSJET II-04, which shows a $1.67 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.36$ excess. We also studied the dependence of these excesses on lateral distances and found a slower decrease of the lateral distribution of muons in the data as compared to the MC, causing larger discrepancy at larger lateral distances.

Abstract

Background Upadacitinib (UPA) is an oral, JAK1-selective inhibitor found to be effective in Phase 2 and 3 studies in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with inadequate response or intolerance to csDMARDs and bDMARDs. 1–4 Objectives To evaluate the efficacy and safety of UPA in Japanese active RA patients with inadequate response to csDMARDs (csDMARD-IR). Methods During the 12 week double-blind period, patients on stable csDMARDs were randomised to receive UPA 7.5,15 or 30 mg once daily or PBO (1:1:1:1). The primary endpoint was proportion of patients achieving ACR20 at Wk 12 (NRI). Results Of 197 patients treated, 187 completed the double-blind period. At Week 12, more patients receiving UPA 7.5, 15 and 30 mg vs PBO met ACR20 (75.5%, 83.7%,80% vs 42.9%, p table 1) . The more stringent responses, such as ACR50/70, DAS28-CRP≤3.2, were achieved by significantly higher proportions of patients on UPA vs PBO with more patients on UPA 15 mg and 30 mg achieving these responses vs UPA 7.5 mg ( Table ). At Week 12, patients receiving UPA vs PBO had greater improvements from baseline (p Overall adverse events (AE), serious AEs, infections (including serious infections, opportunistic infections and herpes zoster) were numerically higher in UPA 30 mg. There were no events of pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, tuberculosis or malignancy and there were no deaths. Mean haemoglobin levels improved with UPA 7.5 (+0.35 g/dL) and remained stable with UPA 15 (-0.03 g/dL) vs UPA 30 (-0.54 g/dL) and PBO (−0.17 g/dL). CPK elevations and lymphopenia occurred more frequently in UPA 30 mg. Conclusions In this Japanese RA csDMARD-IR population, the efficacy of UPA was demonstrated, with better responses for more stringent endpoints on UPA 15 mg and 30 mg vs 7.5 mg. Abstract

Today more than ever, narrative content generation has become important. This is due to the advances and accessibility of computational devices. As these devices become more familiar to people and easier to handle, there will be greater expectations for autonomous functioning and desires for a natural communication with the users. To achieve such demands, computational devices need to process and generate higher levels of meanings such as context and abstraction of topics. This chapter gives a background on topics that have been developed so far in content analysis and content generation, but focuses mainly on the figure-ground impression model, for both analysis and generating narrative context. By focusing on the characters and their attributes in the text, not only is this model able to represent the figure-ground impressions qualitatively, but also quantitatively. Such a feature may be useful to execute in computational devices such as artificial intelligence.

Abstract

The Telescope Array observatory utilizes fluorescence detectors and surface detectors to observe air showers produced by ultra high energy cosmic rays in the Earth's atmosphere. Cosmic ray events observed in this way are termed hybrid data. The depth of air shower maximum is related to the mass of the primary particle that generates the shower. This paper reports on shower maxima data collected over 8.5 years using the Black Rock Mesa and Long Ridge fluorescence detectors in conjunction with the array of surface detectors. We compare the means and standard deviations of the observed $X_{\mathrm{max}}$ distributions with Monte Carlo $X_{\mathrm{max}}$ distributions of unmixed protons, helium, nitrogen, and iron, all generated using the QGSJet~II-04 hadronic model. We also perform an unbinned maximum likelihood test of the observed data, which is subjected to variable systematic shifting of the data $X_{\mathrm{max}}$ distributions to allow us to test the full distributions, and compare them to the Monte Carlo to see which elements are not compatible with the observed data. For all energy bins, QGSJet~II-04 protons are found to be compatible with Telescope Array hybrid data at the 95% confidence level after some systematic $X_{\mathrm{max}}$ shifting of the data. Abstract

An intermediate-scale energy spectrum anisotropy has been found in the arrival directions of ultra-high energy cosmic rays of energies above $10^{19.2}$ eV in the northern hemisphere, using 7 years of data from the Telescope Array surface detector. A relative energy distribution test is done comparing events inside oversampled spherical caps of equal exposure, to those outside, using the Poisson likelihood ratio. The center of maximum significance is at $9^h$$16^m$, $45^{\circ}$. and has a deficit of events with energies $10^{19.2}$$\leq$$E$$

Abstract

We present the results of the search for ultra-high-energy photons with nine years of data from the Telescope Array surface detector. A multivariate classifier is built upon 16 reconstructed parameters of the extensive air shower. These parameters are related to the curvature and the width of the shower front, the steepness of the lateral distribution function, and the timing parameters of the waveforms sensitive to the shower muon content. A total number of two photon candidates found in the search is fully compatible with the expected background. The $95\%\,$CL limits on the diffuse flux of the photons with energies greater than $10^{18.0}$, $10^{18.5}$, $10^{19.0}$, $10^{19.5}$ and $10^{20.0}$ eV are set at the level of $0.067$, $0.012$, $0.0036$, $0.0013$, $0.0013~\mbox{km}^{-2}\mbox{yr}^{-1}\mbox{sr}^{-1}$ correspondingly., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

The results on ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECR) mass composition obtained with the Telescope Array surface detector are presented. The analysis employs the boosted decision tree (BDT) multivariate analysis built upon 14 observables related to both the properties of the shower front and the lateral distribution function. The multivariate classifier is trained with Monte-Carlo sets of events induced by the primary protons and iron. An average atomic mass of UHECR is presented for energies $10^{18.0}-10^{20.0}\ \mbox{eV}$. The average atomic mass of primary particles shows no significant energy dependence and corresponds to $\langle \ln A \rangle = 2.0 \pm 0.1 (stat.) \pm 0.44 (syst.)$. The result is compared to the mass composition obtained by the Telescope Array with $\mbox{X}_{\mbox{max}}$ technique along with the results of other experiments. Abstract

To improve the transmittance of Mg–Y based switchable mirrors in the transparent state the surface was coated with a TiO2 thin film using e-beam evaporation and the optical properties were studied. The TiO2 films had a refractive index of ~2.1. As a result of the TiO2 coating with a thickness of ~65 nm, the transmittance in the visible range was considerably improved and consequently the visible transmittance in the transparent state reached 68%. This result was consistent with simulation results calculated using complex refractive indices for hydrides of Pd, Mg–Y alloy, and Ta. Thus, it is concluded that TiO2 is one of the best candidates for an antireflection layer to improve the optical properties of switchable mirrors.

A produção de energia através da biomassa pode contribuir significativamente, bem como para diminuir a emissão de carbono na atmosfera e também minimizar o problema de contaminação da água no caso dos resíduos de criação animal e resíduos sólidos municipais. Diante desta problemática, este trabalho teve como objetivo, monitorar a quantidade de dejetos produzidos por animal na granja (L/dia), e também a produção de biomassa da granja (m³/dia). As análises foram realizadas na Unidade Granja Colombari, localizada no município de São Miguel-PR, oeste do Paraná. Volume de controle foi realizado por meio de um sistema de medição volumétrica, a partir de caixa d’água instalada na saída dos efluentes dos galpões de alojamento de suínos. O período de coleta de dados situou-se entre os meses de dezembro de 2011 e junho de 2012. Durante esse período, o volume médio de dejetos medido, correspondente a 82 suínos, foi de aproximadamente 723 litros de dejetos/dia. Pode-se observar o aumento da produção dejetos nos meses de dezembro e janeiro, reflexo de maior consumo de água e consequente geração de dejetos.

Abstract

The Telescope Array experiment studies ultra high energy cosmic rays using a hybrid detector. Fluorescence telescopes measure the longitudinal development of the extensive air shower generated when a primary cosmic ray particle interacts with the atmosphere. Meanwhile, scintillator detectors measure the lateral distribution of secondary shower particles that hit the ground. The Middle Drum (MD) fluorescence telescope station consists of 14 telescopes from the High Resolution Fly’s Eye (HiRes) experiment, providing a direct link back to the HiRes measurements. Using the scintillator detector data in conjunction with the telescope data improves the geometrical reconstruction of the showers significantly, and hence, provides a more accurate reconstruction of the energy of the primary particle. The Middle Drum hybrid spectrum is presented and compared to that measured by the Middle Drum station in monocular mode. Further, the hybrid data establishes a link between the Middle Drum data and the surface array. A comparison between the Middle Drum hybrid energy spectrum and scintillator Surface Detector (SD) spectrum is also shown.

Abstract

We report on the search for steady point-like sources of neutral particles around 10$^{18}$ eV between 2008 May and 2013 May with the scintillator surface detector of the Telescope Array experiment. We found overall no significant point-like excess above 0.5 EeV in the northern sky. Subsequently, we also searched for coincidence with the Fermi bright Galactic sources. No significant coincidence was found within the statistical uncertainty. Hence, we set an upper limit on the neutron flux that corresponds to an averaged flux of 0.07 km$^{-2}$ yr$^{-1}$ for $E>1$ EeV in the northern sky at the 95% confidence level. This is the most stringent flux upper limit in a northern sky survey assuming point-like sources. The upper limit at the 95% confidence level on the neutron flux from Cygnus X-3 is also set to 0.2 km$^{-2}$ yr$^{-1}$ for $E>0.5$ EeV. Abstract

We measure the spectrum of cosmic rays with energies greater than 10 18.2 eV with the fluorescence detectors (FDs) and the surface detectors (SDs) of the Telescope Array Experiment using the data taken in our first 2.3-year observation from May 27, 2008 to September 7, 2010. A hybrid air shower reconstruction technique is employed to improve accuracies in determination of arrival directions and primary energies of cosmic rays using both FD and SD data. The energy spectrum presented here is in agreement with our previously published spectra and the HiRes results.

Abstract

The stability of the gain of the photomultiplier (PMT) camera for the Fluorescence Detector (FD) of the Telescope Array experiment was monitored using an 241 Am loaded scintillator pulsers (YAP) and a diffused xenon flasher (TXF) for a selected set of 35 PMT-readout channels. From the monitoring of YAP pulses over four years of FD operation, we found slow monotonic drifts of PMT gains at a rate of −1.7~+1.7%/year. An average of the PMT gains over the 35 channels stayed nearly constant with a rate of change measured at −0.01±0.31(stat)±0.21(sys)%/year. No systematic decrease of the PMT gain caused by the night sky background was observed. Monitoring by the TXF also tracked the PMT gain drift of the YAP at 0.88±0.14(stat)%/year.

Abstract

Measurements of the cross sections for charged current deep inelastic scattering in e+p collisions with a longitudinally polarised positron beam are presented. The measurements are based on a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 132 pb^-1 collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV. The total cross section is presented at positive and negative values of the longitudinal polarisation of the positron beams. The single-differential cross-sections ds/dQ^2, ds/dx and ds/dy are presented for Q^2 > 200 GeV^2. The reduced cross-section is presented in the kinematic range 200 < Q^2 < 60,000 GeV^2 and 0.006 < x < 0.562. The measurements agree well with the predictions of the Standard Model. The results are used to determine a lower limit on the mass of a hypothetical right-handed W boson., 33 pages, 11 figures, 7 tables
