Activate carbon (AC) demand has increased worldwide, with application in adsorption, heterogeneous catalysis, and most recently as electrocatalyst support. However, while AC production from agro-industrial waste are widely researched, textile waste is neglected as raw material. In this study, cotton fabric was first applied as textile dye adsorbent after iron impregnation, which enhanced the adsorption capacity. The dye adsorbed fabric was than sequentially pyrolyzed at 800 °C for 2 h under N2 atmosphere, producing a magnetic mesoporous activated carbon (MAC) of 472 m2 g-1 BET surface area with 82% micropores and magnetization saturation of 34.2 emu g-1 deriving from encapsulated metallic αFe. This new simple and fast one-step carbonization, activation and iron incorporation method, has very low chemicals consumption and waste generation compared to the traditionally applied ones. The so produced MAC was loaded with 20 % Pd and tested for electrocatalyst properties: high density current for ethanol oxidation of 549 mA mg-1Pd, 1.37 times higher than using commercial Pd catalyst, lower onset potential of -0.48 V vs NHE. Application of the electrocatalyst for direct ethanol fuel cell achieved a high energy production of 27 mW cm-2 at 353 K.

Background Spontaneous ruptured aortic plaques (SRAPs) act as emboli for systemic organs because SRAPs might contain CCs which cause inflammation besides mechanical obstruction. The purpose of the study is to clarify the difference of the characteristics of representative SRAPs, puff rupture and puff-chandelier rupture sampled by non-obstructive general angioscopy. (NOGA) Methods A total of 177 puff-chandelier ruptures which blown out spontaneously and glittered against the light of the angioscopic fiber and 105 puff ruptures which did not glitter were sampled by NOGA in patients having or suspected coronary artery disease. Sampled plaques were analyzed two kinds of methods, conventional Hematoxylin-eosin stain and methods without solvents. Samples were diagnosed if the component of atheroma was detected with either method. The percentage of content of CCs, the number of CCs, the longer and shorter diameters were compared between blood sampled from puff and puff-chandelier rupture. Results Samples were diagnosed as atheroma 56% of puff-chandelier rupture and 27% of puff- rupture. (p Conclusions Diversity of SRAPs were shown as that puff rupture had less CCs and more fibrin than puff-chandelier rupture, suggesting that potentially less inflammation and more fibrinolytic. This work aims to obtain activated carbon (AC) from yeast residue to boost up bioeconomy. In this way, carbon was prepared from yeast biomass produced by the ethanol industry and after beta-glucan extraction. Carbon was activated with CO2, water vapor, and a combination of both using an experimental design. The best conditions to produce AC were activation with CO2 for 30 min at 850 °C and CO2 flow of 0.09 L/min, set by experimental design and desirability function to optimize the yield, surface area, and microporosity. Thus, for physical activation with water vapor employing the optimized conditions, it was possible to achieve a yield of 56.6% (m/m) for AC with 1144 m2/g of surface area and mean micropore volume of 0.53 cm3/g. The maximum AC surface area reached 1616 ± 567 m2/g with a yield of 21 ± 1%. The prepared ACs were characterized by elemental analysis, X-ray diffractometry, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry analysis, pHPZC, and potentiometric titration to determine the main functional groups of sorption sites. The carbon obtained from the desirability condition was used to remove dipyrone from synthetic aqueous effluent with an experimental sorption capacity of 88 ± 4 mg/g, being the phenomenon described by the Freundlich isotherm model.

We report the observation of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effects in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) confined to an InAs/AlGaSb quantum well, using a dual-gated Hall-bar device allowing for the independent control of the vertical electric field and electron density. At a magnetic field of 24 T, we observe FQH states at several filling factors, namely $\nu = 5/3$, $2/3$, and $1/3$, in addition to the $\nu = 4/3$ previously reported for an InAs 2DEG. The $\nu = 4/3$ and $5/3$ states, which are absent at zero back-gate voltage, emerge as the quantum well is made more symmetric by applying a positive back-gate voltage. The dependence of zero-field electron mobility on the quantum-well asymmetry reveals a significant contribution of interface-roughness scattering, with much stronger scattering at the lower InAs/AlGaSb interface. However, the dependence of the visibility of the FQH effects on the quantum-well asymmetry is not entirely consistent with that of mobility, suggesting that a different source of disorder is also at work., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Overexpression of HER2 in breast cancer is correlated with poor prognosis. HER2-targeted drugs, such as trastuzumab and lapatinib, have been successful to treat HER2-positive breast cancers, however, the acquisition of the drug resistance of the cells is recognized. Here we suggest the novel molecular targets to cure HER2-positive breast cancers. The oncogenic roles of Rac1, a Rho family small GTPase, in a variety of cancers have been demonstrated. For example, the elevated expression or hyperactivation of Rac1 is frequently observed in human cancers, correlating with their aggressiveness and poor prognosis. In breast cancers, upregulation of Rac1 GEF (GTP exchange factor) and downregulation of Rac1 GAP (GTPase activating protein) have been reported. Moreover, activation of Rac1 contributed to trastuzumab resistance, which poses a serious problem during chemotherapy. In the present study, we first investigated in detail in which subtypes of breast cancers mRNA expression of Rac1 is correlated with their poor prognosis. Using the METABRIC database, we found that high mRNA expression of Rac1 significantly correlated with the poor prognosis of HER2-positive breast cancer (p=0.0012, High: n=49, Low: n=171). On the other hands, other three types (basal, claudin-low, or luminal-B type) did not show significant correlation between the expression levels of Rac1 mRNA and their prognosis (p=0.15, High: n=97, Low: n=102; p=0.052, High: n=110, Low: n=89; p=0.17, High: n=70, Low: n=391; respectively). In luminal-A type breast cancer, low mRNA expression of Rac1 significantly correlated with poor prognosis (p=0.0046, High: n=492, Low: n=187). We next investigated the molecular mechanism underlying Rac1 activation in HER2-positive breast cancer cells, SKBR-3 cells. We found that Cullin-3 (CUL3, a subunit of a RING ubiquitin E3 ligase complex) and its adaptor protein KCTD10 are essential for Rac1 activation. Mechanistically, CUL3/KCTD10 ubiquitinate RhoB, a Rho family small GTPase that suppresses the activation of Rac1, leading to the degradation RhoB. We also found that HER2 signaling is essential for the activation of Rac1. Conclusions: This study reveals that the novel molecular axis CUL3/KCTD10/RhoB regulates the Rac1 activation in HER2-positive breast cancer cells. The interference of CUL3/KCTD10 complex formation may be a new strategy to the treatment of HER2- and Rac1-positive breast cancers. In this work, we investigated the use of cotton scraps in natura and modified with iron nitrate,in the adsorption of one of the main water contaminants of the textile industries, the reactive black dye. Special attention was paid to the appropriate destination of the spent adsorbent, in compliance with the precepts of the circular economy. Cotton and polyester are excellent candidates for adsorbents and are produced on a large scale worldwide, but fabric wastes do not yet have a wellestablished method of application. We found that fabrics containing different types of fibers or colors maintain the ability to remove dye. The retention promoted by the cotton fabric in natura reached 18.8 mg g-1. After treatment with iron ions, there was an increase in the dye adsorption capacity to 31.0 mg g-1. In addition, the spent iron-containing adsorbent was pyrolyzed at 973 K, resulting in an activated magnetic carbon with a specific surface area ranging from 300 to 565 m2 g-1. Thus, it was possible to convert the used adsorbent into a new material with wide application possibilities.

Summary Background & aims The associations between dietary magnesium intake and stroke and coronary heart disease (CHD) incidences are inconsistent and not established in Asian. We aimed to determine the association between dietary magnesium intake and the risk of stroke and CHD in a Japanese population. Subjects/Methods We studied 85,293 Japanese subjects by questionnaire at baseline (age 45–74 years, without cardiovascular disease or cancer in 1995 and 1998 for Cohorts I and II, respectively). The participants were followed until the end of 2009 and 2010 in Cohorts I and II, respectively. Dietary magnesium intake was estimated from a self-administered 138-item food-frequency questionnaire. Results After 1,305,738 person-years of follow-up, 4110 strokes and 1283 cases of CHD were documented. The multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs, 95% confidence intervals, 95%CIs) of CHD for the fourth and fifth quintiles of dietary magnesium intake were 0.70 (0.50–0.99) and 0.66 (0.44–0.97) in men (P for trend = 0.036), respectively, and third quintile of dietary magnesium intake was 0.61 (0.39–0.96) in women (P for trend = 0.241), compared with the lowest quintile in men and women. We observed no decreased risks of incident stroke in men or women with higher dietary magnesium intakes. Conclusions Higher dietary magnesium intake was associated with a reduced risk of CHD in Japanese men.

A finding between dietary pattern and cancer may provide visions beyond the assessment of individual foods or nutrients. We examined the influence of dietary pattern with colorectal cancer (CRC) among a Japanese population.A total of 93,062 subjects (43,591 men, 49,471 women) who participated in the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study were followed from 1995-1998 to the end of 2012, during which 2482 cases of CRC (1514 men, 968 women) were newly identified. Dietary data was obtained from a validated food-frequency questionnaire between 1995 and 1998.Three dietary pattern was derived from principal components factor: prudent, westernized, and traditional pattern. After controlled for potential confounders, the prudent pattern showed a decreased association of CRC risk in men (HR for highest quintile vs lowest: 0.85; 95% CI: 0.72-1.00; P trend0.05), slightly more strongly with distal colon cancer (P trend0.05); but an increased risk of rectal cancer in women (P trend0.05). The westernized pattern showed a significant positive linear trend for colon (P trend0.05) and distal cancer (P trend0.05) in women. There was no apparent association of traditional Japanese dietary pattern on the overall or any specific sites risk of CRC.A prudent dietary pattern showed an inverse association with CRC risk in men, and a westernized pattern was related with a higher risk of colon and distal cancer in women.

The magnetic hyperfine field and electric field gradients at a radioactive impurity probe of $^{111}\mathrm{Cd}(\ensuremath{\leftarrow}^{111m}\mathrm{Cd})$ occupying the La/Ca $A$ site in a perovskite manganaite ${\mathrm{La}}_{0.7}{\mathrm{Ca}}_{0.3}{\mathrm{MnO}}_{3}$ (${T}_{C}\ensuremath{\sim}250\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$) were measured by means of time-differential perturbed angular correlation (TDPAC) spectroscopy. In the paramagnetic-insulator phase at room temperature, the $^{111}\mathrm{Cd}(\ensuremath{\leftarrow}^{111m}\mathrm{Cd})$ probes are distributed in two different environments: distorted and less distorted sites; whereas in the ferromagnetic-metal phase below ${T}_{C}$, the oscillatory structure of the distorted component vanishes from the TDPAC function. The vanishing of the oscillation is ascribable to dynamic motion of polarons dragged by conduction electrons induced by the double exchange interaction. In liquid helium, the dynamic motion freezes, leaving averaged local distortion. The dynamic motion and freezing of local structures associated with the colossal-magnetoresistance phase transition to the ferromagnetic phase is discussed on the basis of temperature-dependent electromagnetic fields at the probe nuclei of the $A$ site ions.

We have developed a SiC-FET-type gas sensor that enables highly sensitive NO detection in high-temperature exhaust gas. The gate of the FET is a gas detection layer consisting of yttria-stabilized zirconia, nickel oxide, and platinum, which are deposited on the SiC substrate. The threshold voltage of the FET depends on the NO concentration. Experimental results demonstrate that the FET-type sensor can detect NO concentration less than 1 ppm, thus meeting the specifications required to satisfy the strict regulations for exhaust gas in the next generation.

Highly efficient hydrogen liquefaction is required for upcoming hydrogen energy society. Magnetic refrigeration is expected as a method to realize efficient hydrogen liquefaction, and the performance depends on properties of magnetic materials. RT 2 (R: rare-earth; T: Al, Ni) Laves phase intermetallic compounds with a second-order magnetic phase transition are one of the promising magnetocaloric materials. Thermal expansion, magnetostriction, and thermal conductivity of ErAl2, DyNi2, DyAl2 and GdNi2 were measured in magnetic fields using polycrystalline samples because of the important properties for practical use in a magnetic refrigerator. Thermal expansions showed anomalies at the magnetic transition temperature. However, those in 0 T were nearly the same as copper. Magnetostriction were not as large as magnetocaloric materials with a first-order magnetic phase transition such as TbMn2. Thermal conductivities in 0 T were almost in agreement with the literature data, and magnetic field dependence was small. These results indicate that RT 2 compounds are suitable as magnetic refrigerants for hydrogen liquefaction in practical use.

Aims Coping strategies may be significantly associated with health outcomes. This is the first study to investigate the association between baseline coping strategies and cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence and mortality in a general population cohort. Methods and results The Japan Public Health Center-based prospective Study asked questions on coping in its third follow-up survey (2000–04). Analyses on CVD incidence and mortality included 57 017 subjects aged 50–79 without a history of CVD and who provided complete answers on approach- and avoidance-oriented coping behaviours and strategies. Cox regression models, adjusted for confounders, were used to determine hazard ratios (HRs) according to coping style. Mean follow-up time was 7.9 years for incidence and 8.0 years for mortality. The premorbid use of an approach-oriented coping strategy was inversely associated with incidence of stroke (HR = 0.85; 95% CI, 0.73–1.00) and CVD mortality (HR = 0.74; 95% CI, 0.55–0.99). Stroke subtype analyses revealed an inverse association between the approach-oriented coping strategy and incidence of ischaemic stroke (HR = 0.79; 95% CI, 0.64–0.98) and a positive association between the combined coping strategy and incidence of intra-parenchymal haemorrhage (HR = 2.03; 95% CI, 1.01–4.10). Utilizing an avoidance coping strategy was associated with increased mortality from ischaemic heart disease (IHD) only in hypertensive individuals (HR = 3.46; 95% CI, 1.07–11.18). The coping behaviours fantasizing and positive reappraisal were associated with increased risk of CVD incidence (HR = 1.24; 95% CI, 1.03–1.50) and reduced risk of IHD mortality (HR = 0.63; 95% CI, 0.40–0.99), respectively. Conclusion An approach-oriented coping strategy, i.e. proactively dealing with sources of stress, may be associated with significantly reduced stroke incidence and CVD mortality in a Japanese population-based cohort.

To determine the direct and indirect relationships of sociodemographic, emotional and behavioral characteristics of family caregivers of Alzheimer's disease patients who have neuropsychiatric symptoms.A total of 134 family caregivers answered a questionnaire with sociodemographic data, and questions regarding the context of care, Neuropsychiatric Inventory, Zarit Burden Interview, Dementia Management Strategies Scale and the Beck Depression Inventory. A path analysis was used to model the direct and indirect relationships among the selected variables.Being a female caregiver, presenting high levels of burden, a moderate degree of depressive symptoms, distress (Neuropsychiatric Inventory total distress score), active management strategies and criticism management strategies were significantly associated with the total score of neuropsychiatric symptoms. The caregiver burden and use of criticism management strategies were directly related to neuropsychiatric symptoms in older adults with Alzheimer's disease. The use of active management strategies and depressive symptoms of caregivers had indirect relationships with neuropsychiatric symptoms through caregiver burden.Overburdened caregivers and the use of dysfunctional management strategies are associated with a greater presence of neuropsychiatric symptoms in Alzheimer's disease patients. These aspects should be considered when developing interventions for caregivers to manage neuropsychiatric symptoms and overall treatment of patients with dementia. Background and aims Higher intake of fish or n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) has been associated with reduced risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). However, it is unclear whether increased blood levels of n-3 PUFAs are associated with reduced risk of CHD in the Japanese population. Methods The relationship between circulating levels of n-3 PUFAs (eicosapentaenoic acid + docosapentaenoic acid + docosahexaenoic acid) and risk of CHD was examined in a nested case-control study among participants in the Japan Public Health Center (JPHC)-based Study Cohort. Plasma n-3 PUFA phospholipid levels were measured at baseline by gas chromatography in 209 cases with CHD and 418 controls matched for sex, age, date of blood draw, time elapsed since last meal before blood collection, and study location. The CHD cases (n = 209) comprised 168 cases of myocardial infarction and 41 of sudden cardiac death, otherwise classified as 157 non-fatal and 52 fatal coronary events, respectively. Mean duration of follow-up was 13.5 years. Results Multivariate conditional logistic analysis showed no significant association between n-3 PUFAs and risk of total CHD. The odds ratio (OR) for the highest versus lowest quartiles of plasma n-3 PUFAs was 0.79 (95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 0.41–1.51, p for trend = 0.51). Subtype analysis of CHD revealed that the multivariate ORs for the highest versus lowest quartiles for n-3 PUFAs were 0.91 (95% CI: 0.43–1.89, p for trend = 0.90) for myocardial infarction, 0.08 (95% CI: 0.01–0.88, p for trend = 0.04) for sudden cardiac death, 0.89 (95% CI: 0.42–1.89, p for trend = 0.97) for nonfatal coronary events, and 0.12 (95% CI: 0.02–0.75, p for trend = 0.03) for fatal coronary events. Conclusions Plasma n-3 PUFA levels were not associated with risk of total CHD but were inversely associated with risks of sudden cardiac death and fatal coronary events among middle-aged Japanese individuals.

Posttranslational modifications (PTMs) of proteins such as phosphorylation and ubiquitination are crucial for controlling protein stability, localization, and conformation. Genetic information encoded in DNA is transcribed, translated, and increases its complexity by multiple PTMs. Conformational change introduced by PTMs affects interacting partners of each proteins and their downstream signaling; therefore, PTMs are the major level of modulations of total outcome of living cells. Plants are living in harsh environment that requires unremitting physiological modulation to survive, and the plant response to various environment stresses is regulated by PTMs of proteins. This review deals with the novel knowledge of PTM-focused proteomic studies on various life conditions. PTMs are focused that mediate plant-environment interaction such as stress perception, protein homeostasis, control of energy shift, and defense by immune system. Integration of diverse signals on a protein via multiple PTMs is discussed as well, considering current situation where signal integration became an emerging area approached by systems biology into account.

Present experimental methods do not have sufficient resolution to investigate all processes in virus particles at atomistic details. We report the results of molecular dynamics simulations and analyze the connection between the number of ions inside an empty capsid of PCV2 virus and its stability. We compare the crystallographic structures of the capsids with unresolved N-termini and without them in realistic conditions (room temperature and aqueous solution) and show that the structure is preserved. We find that the chloride ions play a key role in the stability of the capsid. A low number of chloride ions results in loss of the native icosahedral symmetry, while an optimal number of chloride ions create a neutralizing layer next to the positively charged inner surface of the capsid. Understanding the dependence of the capsid stability on the distribution of the ions will help clarify the details of the viral life cycle that is ultimately connected to the role of packaged viral genome inside the capsid.

The loss energy density (AC loss) with ripple current is numerically calculated by finite element method for cylindrical and strip superconductors based on Irie–Yamafuji model in which the magnetic field dependence of the critical current density is taken into account for design of DC transmission cable system. It is confirmed that calculated result of the AC loss in the cylindrical superconductor with the ripple current agrees well with theoretical estimation which was reported in the previous work. On the contrary, the AC loss in the strip superconductor with the ripple current is obtained only by numerical calculation. It is found that the AC loss in the strip superconductor of the ripple current becomes larger than that without DC current at small ripple current amplitude, since the penetration depth of magnetic field becomes large. Background and Objective We evaluated an alternative procedure for sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) for breast cancer after approval of the study by the Ethics Committee of Tokyo Medical University Hospital in 2004. We examined the efficacy and safety of SLNB using the photosensitizer talaporfin sodium (Laserphyrin®, Meiji Seika Pharma, Tokoyo, Japan), compared with current methods. Study Design/Patients and Methods The study included 21 breast cancer patients (Japanese women; median age, 54 years; range, 35–75). All patients received a breast cancer operation combined with SLNB between June 2004 and May 2005. Three milliliters of talaporfin solution was locally injected into the subareolar region just before the operation. We attempted to identify a sentinel lymph node (SLN) that exhibited fluorescence and was consistent with a radioisotope (RI) localization technique. Our purpose was to verify the accuracy and validity of the talaporfin fluorescence imaging method after 8 years of application. Results There was no consistent correlation between fluorescence and pathological SLN metastasis, although all four cases of pathological SLN metastasis revealed positive fluorescence. In some cases in which we could not identify SLNs by the RI technique, we could identify SLNs using talaporfin. The method using talaporfin did not adversely affect the patients after the operation, even the chronic renal failure patient. After 8 years, all patients are alive, and none had lymph node recurrence. Side effects were not observed. Conclusion SLNB using the photosensitizer talaporfin sodium in breast cancer patients is considered to be useful as complementary to other current methods. We could evaluate the accuracy and validity of this method 8 years after all of the procedures were performed. The aim of this study was to assess whether the application of a lightweight mesh for mesh plug repair (MPR) for primary inguinal hernia could reduce chronic pain or other symptoms associated with the insertion of the prosthesis. Patients over 20 years of age with a unilateral primary inguinal hernia were eligible to participate in the study. The patients were randomly assigned to a lightweight mesh (LWM) or a heavyweight mesh (HWM) group. All the operations were performed under local anesthesia. The operative details, including the hernia type and the nerves that were identified, and the postoperative complications were recorded. All follow-up and outcome measures were obtained based on a physical examination and a questionnaire regarding pain and other symptoms at 1 week, 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after the surgery in a double-blinded manner. The use of LWM significantly reduced foreign body sensation after 12 months to one-third of the incidence reported for the use of HWM (5.8 vs. 17.9 %; P = 0.013), while no significant differences were found in pain parameters, including the use of pain relief medications, between the groups throughout the study period. This study indicated that the use of LWM in the MPR decreases the incidence of foreign body sensation at 1 year after surgery for primary inguinal hernia. LWM may be preferable to MPR, similar to results described previously for Lichtenstein repair.

Background and study aims: Acute colorectal obstruction (ACO) often accompanies colorectal cancer (CRC) and requires urgent treatment, but achieving elective laparoscopy-assisted colectomy (LAC) is difficult in this setting. The aim of the current study was to assess the clinical outcomes of a transanal tube (Dennis colorectal tube [DCT]) for CRC with ACO, focusing in particular on the impact of the DCT on subsequent elective LAC. Patients and methods: Among 1142 patients who underwent surgery for CRC between January 2007 and December 2011, 92 patients with ACO were identified retrospectively. Of these 92 patients, the DCT procedure was performed in 66 patients who fulfilled the indications for DCT, and these patients were included in the study. Results: All 66 patients presented with complete obstruction. Technical and clinical success rates for DCT were 93.9 % and 86.4 %, respectively. Perforation after DCT occurred in 4.5 % and the mortality rate was 1.5 %. The rate of LAC was 48.5 %, and the rate of primary stoma was 13.6 %. For curative stage II/III CRC with ACO, DCT resulted in a primary stoma rate of 13.6 %, a one-stage surgery rate of 90.9 %, a LAC rate of 50.0 %, and a 3-year survival rate of 73.1 %. For stage II/III CRC cases with clinical success by DCT, the one-stage surgery rate was 97.4 % and the LAC rate was 56.4 %. Conclusions: DCT achieved a high rate of clinical success and enabled safe one-stage surgery and LAC for CRC with ACO. DCT followed by LAC is proposed as a promising non-invasive strategy for CRC with ACO.

The Shinmoe-dake volcano in southwest Japan, which produced its first major eruption in 52 yr on 26 January 2011 but had been quiescent since 1 March, re-erupted on 13 March. It was only two days after the occurrence of the M = 9.0 Tohoku-oki earthquake in eastern Japan. The coincidence of the two events raises the question of whether the earthquake triggered the volcanic activity. As a provisional but rapid assessment of this question, we examined high-resolution strain data at a site located 18 km from Shinmoe-dake. In terms of the Tohoku-oki earthquake, three points can be drawn from the strain data: (1) static strain changes were less than 0.05 × 10−6, which is too small to trigger an eruption; (2) the amplitudes of dynamic strain changes are on the order of 10−6, which may trigger seismicity or volcanic eruption; and (3) strain rates were not accelerated, which indicates no significant change in magma pressure. Comparing these results with reports of other eruptions coincident with seismic events, and considering a scenario in which a seismic event triggered an eruption, we tentatively conclude that the eruption on 13 March was not a triggered event. However, this conclusion may be revised after analyzing seismic data.

Rice overexpressed thaumatin-like protein gene and the proteins from the leaf blades of 2-week-old transgenic rice seedlings were fractionated into cytosolic and membrane fractions, and separated by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and stained with Commassie brilliant blue. Among of 440 detected proteins, 5 proteins were up-regulated and 5 proteins were down-regulated by the overexpression of thaumatin-like protein. In the sense thaumatin-like protein transgenic rice and/or in rice inoculated with Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xo7435), 2-cys peroxiredoxin, thaumatin-like protein and glycine cleavage H protein were up-regulated, while oxygen evolving complex protein 2 was down-regulated. These results suggest that thaumatin-like protein-mediated disease resistance of rice against bacterial blight disease is the results of changes in proteins related to oxidative stress and energy metabolism in addition to changes in proteins related to defence.

Large lead/scintillator sandwich-type photon detectors, sensitive to visible energy depositions of 1 MeV, have been built for the K L 0 → π 0 ν ν ¯ experiment at the KEK 12-GeV proton synchrotron. The front barrel (FB) is composed of 16 modules with a length of 2.75 m, forming the 1.5 m-diameter cylinder. The main barrel (MB) is composed of 32 modules with a length of 5.5 m, forming a 3.5 m-diameter cylinder. Scintillation light is read out through wavelength-shifter (WLS) fibers. In this paper, the design, construction and performance of these detectors together with some R&D results are reported.
